Orji Kalu Urges President Tinubu To Dismiss ‘Some’ Ministers, Security Chiefs

Senator Orji Kalu, representing Abia North, has called on President Bola Tinubu to remove certain ministers and security chiefs from their positions, citing their inefficiency and insufficient contributions to Nigeria’s progress.

During a guest appearance on Politics Today, a programme broadcast on Channels Television on Monday, Kalu shared his assessment of the federal cabinet.

“Some people working with President Tinubu should be relieved of their duties. Some of them should go, both from the security sector and among the ministers,”
he said.

A former Governor of Abia State, Kalu advised the President to take decisive actions to realign his administration with the expectations of Nigerians.

“President Tinubu must be courageous enough to sack some of these ministers. If he takes my advice, most of these ministers, I’ve appraised them and talked to him privately,  most of them should go, and that is the truth,”
he added.

He also emphasized that changes were needed among the security chiefs for Nigeria to overcome its current difficulties.

“If he takes my advice, some of the security chiefs will also go. There is no sentiment about redeeming Nigeria if we really want to relieve Nigeria,” Kalu remarked.

President Tinubu appointed 45 ministers when he assumed office on 29 May 2023, marking the largest cabinet since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. This move sparked various reactions and concerns.

In October 2024, a significant cabinet reshuffle took place.

Five ministers were dismissed, seven new ministers appointed, and ten others reassigned to different ministries.

The reshuffle affected critical sectors such as education, tourism, women’s affairs, youth development, and housing.

Notable changes included renaming the Ministry of Niger Delta Development to the Ministry of Regional Development, dissolving the Ministry of Sports, and merging the ministries of tourism and arts and culture.

Since the removal of the fuel subsidy in 2023, Nigerians have been grappling with rising fuel prices and increased living costs, alongside economic reforms that have resulted in short-term difficulties.

On the economic situation, Kalu acknowledged the ongoing reforms but noted that many Nigerians have yet to feel their positive effects.

“The macro side is coming, but the other downsides are not coming very well. Nigerians in the lower area are still suffering. They have not started having the benefit of the changes President Tinubu is making,”
he observed.

He cautioned that while reforms are in progress, the benefits will take time to materialize, and ongoing insecurity continues to impede economic recovery.

“The changes are trickling down, it’s going to take another one to two years for the changes to come. And what is causing it is because insurgencies and the problems all over Nigeria are still making people not go to the farm. Some people working with Tinubu should be relieved of their duties,”

Kalu concluded.

Okorocha Denies Defection Rumours, Reaffirms Loyalty To APC

Former Imo State Governor and Senator Rochas Okorocha has dismissed rumours suggesting he plans to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) for another political party.

In a statement released on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Sam Onwuemeodo, Okorocha categorically rejected the speculation and reassured his supporters of his unwavering allegiance to the ruling party.

The statement also urged his followers to disregard recent reports alleging that the APC is “desperate to hijack power,” calling such claims the work of political adversaries intent on sowing discord within the party.

“Okorocha would never describe a party that has been in government since 2015, and still counting, as ‘desperate to hijack power.’ What power again?” the statement said.

Okorocha was described as a “bonafide, committed member of the APC” who never made the statement currently circulating in the media.

“Okorocha remains a bonafide, committed member of the APC. He never made the statement being circulated by those envious of his political journey,”
the statement added.

Highlighting his dedication to the party, Okorocha stressed that he took a political risk by joining the APC during its formation in 2015, becoming the only sitting governor from the South-East to do so, despite the party’s limited support in the region at that time.

Ondo Deputy Speaker Resigns, Majority Leader Steps Down

The Deputy Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Abayomi Akinruntan, has officially resigned from his position, citing the need to align with the conventional arrangement of elective offices in the state.

The resignation letter of Akinruntan, who represents Ilaje Constituency 1 and is the son of the Olugbo of Ugbo Kingdom, Oba Fredrick Akinruntan, was read on the floor of the Assembly by the Clerk, Benjamin Jayeiola. The lawmaker was absent during plenary.

Akinruntan, who was elected Deputy Speaker in June 2023, served in the role until his resignation. His resignation letter stated:

“I hereby tender my resignation from the office of the Deputy Speaker effective from today, 2nd June, 2025. Recall the House was inaugurated in June 2023, and I was unanimously elected as Deputy Speaker by members as stipulated in our standing order.”

“My resignation is borne out of the need to align with the conventional arrangement in power sharing of elective positions in the state. I want to appreciate all members and staff for their contributions and support.”

Following this development, Ololade Gbegude, the lawmaker representing Okitipupa Constituency 2, was nominated by Oluwatoyin Japheth (Akoko North East Constituency) and seconded by Chris Ayebusiwa (Okitipupa Constituency 1) as the new Deputy Speaker.

The nomination was uncontested, and Gbegude was sworn in, pledging to perform his duties with due diligence.

In a similar vein, the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, stepped down from his position. Olatunji Oshati, the lawmaker representing Ose Constituency, was announced as the new Majority Leader.

Additionally, Muritala Sulaiman (Akoko South East) was appointed Chief Whip, and Fabiyi Olatunji (Odigbo Constituency 1) became the Whip of the Assembly.

The Speaker, Olamide Oladiji, praised the former deputy speaker and majority leader for the maturity displayed during the smooth and peaceful transition.

“The same thing goes for the former majority leader. He has been a stabiliser in the House and also a good and dependable ally,”
Oladiji said.

It was gathered that the reshuffling of the principal officers’ positions was necessary to balance the unwritten elective political arrangements in Ondo State.

Notably, Akinruntan and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa hail from the same Ilaje Local Council Area, while Ogunmolasuyi, the outgoing Majority Leader, is from Owo Local Council Area, the same as Deputy Governor Olayide Adelami.

Tension In Enugu Community As Gunmen Reportedly Kidnap Eight Travellers

A wave of tension has engulfed a community in Enugu State following the abduction of at least eight travellers by unknown gunmen at Obioma community, situated along the Udi-Oji River road in Udi Local Government Area.

The kidnapping reportedly took place on Sunday, and as of Tuesday morning, the victims’ whereabouts remain unknown.

Community sources revealed that the incident came to light late Sunday evening when the vehicles the victims were using were found abandoned on the road, their doors left wide open, ignitions still on, and engines running.

“We are no longer safe travelling on the road within the state. They (criminals) have chased our people out of their farms and now they cannot move within their neighbourhood. We are in trouble and government appears overwhelmed with constantly maintaining silence in the face of these security challenges,” one source lamented.

“Abduction in Enugu State occurs on daily basis but you hardly hear it. The police hardly react to any inquiry unless they get clearance from the Government House.”

“People are being killed on daily basis in their farms by herdsmen and so many have been kidnapped with no hope of their returning back despite ransom payments” the source added.

A local security vigilante shared a video clip of the scene, showing some of the abandoned vehicles, including a Toyota Sienna with registration number Abuja RBC-96 HS and a Mercedes Jeep bearing registration Abuja RSH 40 BL.

The video was captioned “Urgent security issue at UDI axis. If you could identify the owners of these vehicles, kindly reach their family members.”

This recent kidnapping follows an operation by the Enugu State Police Command that successfully rescued 21 kidnapping victims across the state on May 24.

The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, announced the rescue and said that one suspected kidnapper was neutralised during the operation.

“One of the operations was carried out on May 23, 2025, by operatives from Okpuje Division, working with Neighbourhood Watch, Forest Guards, and local hunters. Eight kidnapped victims were rescued unhurt after a gunfight with the suspects,” the Commissioner stated.

He further assured that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and recover more items connected to the gang.

While search efforts continue for the kidnappers of the eight travellers abducted at Obioma community, the state police command has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.

Attempts to reach the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, for comments on the abduction were unsuccessful, as he did not answer calls or respond to text messages.

2027: Shehu Sani Endorses Tinubu, Faults Northern Leaders For Regional Underdevelopment

Former senator and human rights advocate Shehu Sani has thrown his support behind President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, while sharply criticising previous Northern leaders for failing to drive progress in the region.

Speaking to journalists at his Kaduna home, Sani emphasized that the North had wielded significant political power in recent years but failed to use that advantage to develop the region meaningfully.

He accused some former Northern officeholders of stoking resentment against Tinubu for their own gain.

“For those of us from this part (North) of the country, we appreciate the progress made so far by this present government,” Sani said.

“And for those of them who had the opportunity to do better and they failed, we tell them that it is better they apologize for the wrong they have done to the people of the North.”

He warned the Northern populace against being manipulated by such politicians, stressing the importance of unity and continued support for the current administration.

“They should not be incited against the President who had supported our own for eight years in power,” he said. “I have heard a lot of comments and remarks that are linked to tribal sentiments.”

Sani cited recent political history, noting that the North-West has produced two presidents since 1999, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Muhammadu Buhari.

He highlighted that the South-West had consistently backed Northern candidates and should now be allowed to complete its own presidential tenure.

“So it is only logical that we allow the South to complete their eight years in power for the peace, unity, and for the survival of our democracy,” he stated.

“And even if there should be another presidential candidate from the opposition, that candidate should be from the Southwest because that is equity, justice, and that is fairness.”

He accused certain unnamed Northern politicians of self-interest, arguing that their criticism of the Tinubu administration stems from exclusion rather than genuine concern for the region.

“Such elements are crying foul for no reason other than that they have been excluded from government,” he said.

“Their grievances are about their own personal interests and not about the people, not about the North, not about the masses, not about insecurity and governance.”

Reflecting on the security situation under the previous administration, Sani pointed out that despite Northern dominance in key security positions, there was little headway in tackling terrorism and banditry.

“Under the last administration, all the security apparatuses are of Northern extraction,” he recalled.

“They never stopped terrorism in the North, they never stopped banditry in Northwest, they never stopped killings in Benue State, in Plateau, and most parts of North Central states. We need to be very factual about it.”

He also highlighted the substantial representation of Northerners in President Tinubu’s cabinet, mentioning key roles like the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Health, Defense, Transport, Environment, Agriculture, and the Chief of Defense Staff.

“For us in the Northern part of the country, we are very much glad, particularly the people from Kaduna State,” he said.

Acknowledging that insecurity still poses challenges, Sani noted that conditions have improved under the current administration, especially in parts of Kaduna.

“Bandits are still killing people, they are kidnapping people in Katsina State, they are still doing that in Zamfara State,” he admitted.

“But if we are going to compare it to where we are coming from, I think things are better.”

He cited the now-safer Birnin Gwari road, which had previously seen relentless attacks.

“Banditry happened every hour, not every day for eight years along Birnin Gwari road. Now people can travel day and night,” he said.

“When last did you hear an attack since the attack on Kuriga school? When last did you hear an attack on any school in the state?”

Sani also pointed to recent federal investments in Kaduna State, including a new medical centre, a federal university in Southern Kaduna, and increased funding for the Kaduna–Abuja highway.

“We have seen many things that were brought in, and we only demand more,” he added.

“But my message is also to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that more should be done in terms of addressing challenges in the Northern part of Nigeria, and critics should be listened to, and where there is lies, it should be responded to. And this country will be great if there is development in all parts of Nigeria.”

Enugu Electricity Commission Orders MainPower To Refund Over 20,000 Customers For Wrongful Billing

The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has ordered MainPower Electricity Distribution Company to refund over 20,000 customers who were wrongfully billed for electricity in April 2025.

This directive was issued in a public notice released on Monday, following multiple complaints from customers about inflated electricity bills.

“Pursuant to Section 35 of the Enugu State Electricity Law 2023 and other extant rules, this is to inform customers in Enugu State that the Commission has issued an Order to MainPower to refund the affected customers the overbilled units for energy consumed in April 2025,” the EERC notice reads.

According to the Commission, the list of affected customers has been published on its official website: www.eerc.en.gov.ng/order. Customers who are not refunded by the end of the stipulated period are advised to contact the Commission.

The order, signed by EERC Chairman, Chijioke Okonkwo and Commissioner for Market Operations, Reuben Okoye, mandates that MainPower complete all refunds by the July 2025 billing cycle at the latest.

“MainPower shall refund the over-bill to the affected customers within the June 2025 billing cycle, but not later than the July 2025 billing cycle.”

“Where MainPower fails or neglects to comply with this Order, the Commission shall invoke its powers under section 32 (5) of the Enugu State Electricity Law 2023, which authorises the Commission to impose a fine not exceeding Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500,000.00) for each day that MainPower may be in default of compliance with this Order,” the order concluded.

EERC began tracking MainPower’s estimated billing system in October 2024, after it took over full regulatory control in Enugu State from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

It cited a pattern of non-compliance and failure to address issues flagged in letters dated 16th December 2024, 14th January, 4th April, and 6th May 2025.

“The Commission, in its letter to MainPower dated 6th May 2025 called MainPower’s attention to the suspiciously striking similarity between MainPower’s estimated billing reports in February and March 2025; and gave MainPower 14 days from the date of receipt of the letter to provide an explanation, if any.”

“The 14 days given to MainPower to respond to the Commission’s letter dated 6th May 2025, expired on 23rd May 2025 without any response from MainPower.”

Following a review of the April 2025 billing report, the Commission said violations of billing caps worsened from 24 percent in February and March to 34 percent in April.

“The Commission recently reviewed MainPower’s April 2025 estimated report, and observed that the degree of violation of the caps on estimated billing by MainPower had further deteriorated,” EERC stated.

It concluded that MainPower had deliberately breached the terms of its interim licence and committed to enforcing strict compliance moving forward.

Court Stops Ex-Minister Frank Nweke Jnr, Others From Ostracizing Enugu Community, Orders Public Apology, Imposes N5m Damages

A Federal High Court in Enugu has issued a restraining order against former Minister of Information, Chief Frank Nweke Jnr, and two others from the Ishi-Ozalla community in Nkanu West Local Government Area, Enugu State.

The court barred them from further excommunicating or ostracizing Mr. Christian Uzochukwu and his Edeaniagu village.

As part of its ruling, the court also ordered the respondents to pay ₦5 million in general damages for their previous actions against Uzochukwu and his village.

The case stemmed from a 2023 suit (Suit No: FHC/EN/CS/40/2023) filed by Mr. Uzochukwu, who alleged that he and his people were unjustly labeled non-indigenes and subjected to various forms of social and cultural exclusion.

According to the court documents, the excommunication and ostracization were reportedly carried out based on claims that the applicants were not originally from the Ishi-Ozalla community.

In the suit, Uzochukwu accused Sir Willy Chukwuani, Christopher Nwanyanwu, and Chief Frank Nweke Jnr of orchestrating and inciting discrimination against him and his entire village.

He detailed several alleged abuses, stating the respondents subjected them to:

“Continuous shaming, beating, taunting, scornfully jeering at, booing and embarrassment, the tagging and or branding of the applicant and his entire Edeaniagu Village as non-indigenes and or outcasts, slaves, descendants of slaves and non-free born, serfs, strangers and resident non-indigenes of Ishi-Ozalla.”

Uzochukwu maintained that these actions amounted to:

“An infraction of the applicant’s right of dignity to his human person and freedom from discrimination as enshrined in Sections 34 and 46 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as Amended) and Articles 5, 6 and 12 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.”

Delivering judgment on May 21, 2025, Justice M.G. Umar ruled in Uzochukwu’s favor, declaring that the respondents’ conduct was a breach of constitutional and human rights protections.

The court specifically ruled:

“That a declaration is further made that the excommunication and ostracization of the applicant and his entire Edeaniagu village by the respondents is an infringement of the applicant’s right of freedom from discrimination as enshrined in Section 46 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as Amended) and Articles 5, 6 and 12 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.”

Justice Umar further awarded damages and mandated a public apology:

“That the sum of ₦5,000,000.00 (Five Million Naira only) being amount for general and exemplary damages suffered by the applicant as a result of excommunication and ostracization of the applicant and his entire Edeaniagu village by the respondents.

“That the Respondents shall write to the applicant a public apology in a national daily.”

Additionally, the court issued an injunction:

“Restraining the respondents either by themselves, agents, privies, servants or anybody whatsoever from further executing the excommunication and ostracization of the applicant and his entire Edeaniagu village.”

It was also recalled that the original ostracization in 2021 had significant implications, including the disqualification of Prince Don Sylvester Chinedu Nweke, the preferred traditional ruler candidate from Edeaniagu, from contesting in the Ishi-Ozalla Igweship election.

12 Trafficked Children Rescued In Abia, Two Suspects Arrested – Police

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the rescue of 12 trafficked children from an illegal and unregistered motherless babies’ home operating out of a residential apartment on Ikot Ekpene Road, Aba, Abia State.

In a statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi, the police revealed that two suspects were arrested in connection with the illicit operation.

“Upon intervention, the operatives discovered twelve (12) children, ranging in age from six months to fourteen years, housed in the premises,” Adejobi said.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the children originated from various villages in the Arochukwu area.”

“The rescued minors have been safely handed over to the Abia State Ministry of Women Affairs for proper care.

“The suspects are currently under interrogation and will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigations.”

In a separate development, the police in Kogi State intercepted a vehicle suspected of being linked to criminal activity.

According to Adejobi, officers from the state police command pursued a green Sharon vehicle that had sped through a checkpoint without stopping.

“The team engaged the bus in a hot pursuit, and the driver, upon realising he was being trailed, abandoned the bus and fled into a nearby bush,” he explained.

Following a swift search of the vehicle, police discovered a significant cache of firearms and ammunition.

“A swift cordon and search was conducted on the spot, leading to the recovery of a substantial cache of arms and ammunition, which included 5 AK-47 rifles, 8 AK-47 magazines, 283 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, 62 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition, and 2 rounds of 7.62x59mm ammunition.”

Initial findings point to a potential link between the abandoned vehicle and a recent armed robbery incident.

“Efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspect are in progress, while initial intelligence suggests a possible connection to a recent armed robbery at a fuel station in Kabba, which is currently under investigation,” the statement read.
