Simon Ekpa’s Terrorism Trial Commences In Finland

Simon Ekpa, a Finnish politician and separatist leader affiliated with a faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), appeared before the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland on Friday as his terrorism trial officially commenced.

The Finnish authorities arrested Ekpa in November 2024 over allegations linked to terror-related activities, including inciting violence and financing terrorism.

Prosecutors claim Ekpa used social media to promote violence and destabilise the South-East region of Nigeria in pursuit of his pro-Biafra separatist agenda.

“We have a great deal of evidence regarding this individual’s online activity and communications,” stated Finnish state prosecutor Sampsa Hakala, who is pushing for a six-year prison sentence.

According to prosecutors, the charges fall under Finnish anti-terrorism laws.

During interrogation, Ekpa rejected the allegations, including claims that he facilitated the procurement of weapons for Biafran groups.

Ekpa is also a prominent figure in the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), which acknowledged his court appearance with a symbolic action.

The group declared a two-day lockdown across Nigeria’s South-East to honour Ekpa and protest his detention.

“We confirm that these two days are significant in the lives of all Biafrans living at home and abroad.”

“Our Prime Minister Simon Ekpa has been detained by the Finnish government since November 2024; imperatively, he will appear in Finnish court on May 29 and so Biafrans should honour him as a hero of our time who has sacrificed his life for Biafra,” the BRGIE stated.

Enugu Will Outperform Gateway Games In National Sports Festival – Sports Commissioner

Governor Mbah

Lloyd Ike Ekweremadu, Enugu State’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports, has pledged that the Coal City Games will elevate the standards of the National Sports Festival as Enugu prepares to take over from Ogun State, the hosts of the 22nd edition, DAILY GAZETTE reports.

The 22nd National Sports Festival, known as Gateway Games 2024, concluded with a closing ceremony at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta on Thursday, where the hosting rights were officially handed over to Enugu State.

Speaking to journalists ahead of the ceremony, Ekweremadu acknowledged the outstanding work done by Ogun State in organizing the festival.

“Ogun State has done a fantastic job in putting the Nigerian sports sector in good light, showcasing what Nigeria is capable of when it comes to organisation and meeting international standards,” he said.

“As far as Enugu State hosting the 23rd edition of the National Sports Festival is concerned, we are getting ready.

“We have been here and we have taken this opportunity to look at what Ogun State has done.

“It’s been smooth sailing in all ramifications. They’ve done a great job and we have taken this opportunity to study how it is done and we can assure you that you should expect a better sports festival in Enugu State.”

The commissioner emphasized that the state government has already begun preparations for a spectacular festival, including the ceremonies.

“If you know anything about the Governor of Enugu State, it should be that he is a man of excellence. We will be more than ready when the time comes to host Nigeria.

“The goal is to outdo what Ogun State has done. The opening ceremony was beautiful and we aim to beat it. Indeed, any state hosting the subsequent National Sports Festival should aim to outdo the last one.”

Ekweremadu also highlighted that visitors, including athletes and officials, will have the opportunity to experience Enugu’s rich tourist and cultural offerings.

“There are lots of tourist attractions with a lot of cultural displays that the people will enjoy when they come.”

Delta State finished as champions of the 2024 National Sports Festival, clinching their fifth consecutive and ninth overall title with 109 gold, 75 silver, and 87 bronze medals.

2026: INEC Announces Dates For Ekiti, Osun Governorship Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the dates for the upcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states, scheduled for Saturday, July 20, and Saturday, August 8, 2026, respectively.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony of six newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners recently confirmed by the National Assembly.

Yakubu also revealed that the commission is finalising arrangements for bye-elections to fill vacant seats in both the National and State Houses of Assembly.

According to the timetable, the Ekiti governorship election will take place on June 20, 2026. Party primaries are slated to hold between October 20 and November 10, 2025.

Political parties must upload their nomination forms by 6pm on December 22, 2025.

The final list of candidates will be published on January 18, 2026, with campaigns beginning on January 21 and ending 24 hours before the election.

He said, “In line with the requirements of the law, the commission is under legal obligation to publish the notices for major elections not later than 360 days before the date fixed for the election.

“In compliance with the law, the commission has approved the timetable and schedule of activities for the Ekiti and Osun State governorship elections.”

“The last governorship elections in the two states were held in June and July 2022. The four-year tenure of the governors will end next year.”

“For Ekiti State, the election will be held on Saturday, 20th June 2026.”

“However, party primaries will start on 20th October 2025 and end on 10th November 2025 to enable Political Parties to upload their nomination forms to the dedicated portal which automatically shuts down by 6.00pm on 22nd December 2025, i.e. not later than 180 days before the election.”

“The final list of candidates will be published on 18th January 2026 while campaign in public by political parties will commence on 21st January 2026 and end 24 hours before election day.”

In Osun State, the governorship election is set for August 8, 2026. Party primaries are scheduled between November 24 and December 15, 2025, with the nomination portal closing at 6pm on February 9, 2026.

The final list of candidates will be released on March 9, 2026, and political campaigns will run from March 11 until the day before the election.

Yakubu explained, “In the case of Osun State, the election will be held on Saturday, 8th August 2026. Party primaries will start on 24th November 2025 and end on 15th December 2025.”

“The portal for the upload of nomination forms by political parties closes at 6.00pm on 9th February 2026, i.e. not later than 180 days before the election.”

“The final list of candidates will be published on 9th March 2026, while campaign in public by political parties will commence on 11th March 2026 and end 24 hours before election day.”

Yakubu stated that the detailed timetable for both elections has already been uploaded to INEC’s website and social media channels for public access and to guide political parties.

Some Resident Electoral Commissioners have also been redeployed across the country. The redeployed RECs include Sa’ad Idris to Gombe; Johnson Sinikiem to Cross River; Feyijimi Ibiyemi to Ogun; Mukhtar Gajiram to Taraba; Chukwuemeka Ibeziako to Abia; and Umar Garba to Sokoto.

Yakubu explained that the redeployment was necessary to support the commission’s work ahead of upcoming elections.

The INEC chairman added, “With the swearing-in of six RECs today, all vacancies have been filled in the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory. It is therefore appropriate to start by congratulating the new RECs that have just taken the oath of office.”

“The conduct of elections is not only a huge responsibility but also a sacred duty. As RECs, you are the representatives of the commission in the various states to which you will be deployed shortly. The work of the commission is, to say the least, very challenging.”

“Together, all six of you have cumulative experience in election administration or the management of public affairs to justify the confidence reposed in you to serve in the high office of REC.”

While the affected RECs have already been notified administratively, the full list of their new postings will be published shortly on INEC’s official website and social media platforms.

He emphasised that the redeployment of RECs is a routine administrative exercise and may occur again as circumstances require.

The INEC chairman urged the RECs, “As you assume or resume duty, I urge you to focus on your responsibilities. Let me make it clear from the outset that you must at all times be guided by the electoral legal framework, the code of conduct for RECs as well as the regulations and guidelines governing the commission’s operations.”

“Above all, you must always act in good conscience. Do not betray your oath of office. In the best tradition of the Commission, you must engage with stakeholders through regular consultative meetings and must not be impervious to genuine criticisms.”

“You must never act independently or think that you can act in violation of the law, regulations and guidelines or defy the commission without consequences. We will hold you accountable for your actions and inactions. We will not hesitate to deal with acts of defiance, indiscretion or transgression on the part of any Resident Electoral Commissioner.”

He also addressed growing concerns from the public regarding the delay in conducting pending by-elections and the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration nationwide.

According to him, the number of pending by-elections has now risen to 17.

He assured Nigerians that preparations for both the CVR and by-elections are nearing completion and that full details will be announced soon.

“The commission is aware of the concern expressed by many Nigerians about the pending bye-elections and the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration nationwide. The number of bye-elections has now risen to 17.”

“We are aware of the urgency to commence the CVR, particularly in view of the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State. We want to assure Nigerians that we are finalising our preparations for both activities, the details of which will soon be made public,” he concluded.

He was attempting to flee the country on a motorcycle when apprehended.

His arrest followed credible intelligence linking him to the abduction, kidnapping, and alleged ritual killing of a 13-year-old girl in Isiagu Community, Enugu State.

The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued by the Service Public Relations Officer, ACI AS Akinlabi, on Thursday.

According to the NIS, Obieze’s identity was confirmed through a National Identity Management Commission enrollment slip found in his possession.

He also reportedly confessed to the crimes during initial questioning.

‘It’s Time To Turn The Page,’ Says Suspended Rivers Governor, Fubara

As he marked his second year in office, suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara delivered a heartfelt message to the people of the state, calling for peace, unity, and reconciliation amid ongoing political tensions.

In his May 29 anniversary address, Fubara expressed gratitude to the citizens of Rivers State for their continued support during what he described as a turbulent yet progressive tenure.

“Your support has emboldened me to press on and not to retreat, but to work harder to foster peace, reconciliation, and forgiveness,” he said.

According to the governor, the people’s backing has been his source of courage and strength as he continues efforts to deliver on his administration’s promise of transformative development.

“These are essential to restoring normalcy and delivering transformational infrastructure, impactful programmes, and life-changing services across the State.”

Reflecting on his journey since his inauguration on May 29, 2023, Fubara described the moment as one of sober reflection and renewed determination.

He acknowledged the political challenges that have defined parts of his tenure, admitting they may have slowed progress but not derailed the mission.

“Despite the turbulence, I have remained steadfast and focused, guided by the oath I took and the solemn promise I made to always put Rivers State first.”

He listed progress made in healthcare, education, infrastructure, youth empowerment, and gender inclusion as evidence of what he called “modest but significant” achievements under his leadership.

“While we have faced daunting political challenges that have, at times, slowed our pace, these two years have not been without meaningful progress,” Fubara said.

“I am proud of the visible milestones we have achieved, modest but significant strides in healthcare, education, infrastructure, youth empowerment, human capital development, and the inclusion of women in governance.”

He thanked Rivers citizens for their sacrifices and contributions, promising to double efforts to consolidate gains in peace, security, and socio-economic growth.

“These achievements would not have been possible without your unwavering support and hope in the brighter future we all envision for Rivers State.”

“For your sacrifices, contributions, and the roles you’ve played in your respective capacities, I say a heartfelt thank you.”

Fubara used the anniversary to reach out directly to political opponents and stakeholders, urging them to set aside their grievances for the greater good of the state.

“To those still carrying the weight of our recent political struggles, I appeal to you—let us turn the page, come together, and focus on our shared goal of progress and unity. The time to rebuild and rise is now,” he said.

Looking ahead, Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to making difficult decisions in the interest of the people, promising that every action taken by his government will be guided by the best interest of Rivers State.

“We are at a crucial point in our journey, where difficult decisions must be made. Be assured that every step we take will be guided by your best interests and the enduring good of Rivers State.”

He closed with a message of hope and partnership, pledging to work alongside all Rivers citizens in building a future-oriented, unified state.

“As we reflect on the lessons of the past two years, I am hopeful for what lies ahead. I look forward to working hand in hand with all of you to build a State we can all be proud of: a RIVERS STATE that stands as a model for the rest of Nigeria.”

“Thank you once again for the opportunity to serve. God bless Rivers State.”

Nnamdi Kanu Received ‘Presidential Treatment’ In Custody, DSS Operative Tells Court

A Department of State Services (DSS) operative testified before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday that detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu was treated with “presidential” care while in custody, contradicting his claims of coercion.

At the resumed session of his alleged terrorism trial, the DSS operative, identified as Mr CCC, the third prosecution witness, dismissed accusations that threats of solitary confinement were used to force Kanu into making statements during interrogation sessions in 2015.

“Mr CCC stated that Kanu was given presidential treatment,” the report noted, “and expressed shock at the allegations of using any form of force to get him to make certain statements including calling Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari unprintable names, and also alleging that Senator Rochas Okorocha ‘Islamised’ his people.”

Kanu had alleged that a DSS operative, referred to as Mr Brown, threatened him with solitary confinement in a “dungeon” if he refused to cooperate.

However, the DSS witness disputed this, stating:

“The names of the officers who took part in the interview are James, Ibrahim, and Collins, with no Mr Brown among them.”

The court also admitted into evidence three videos during the hearing. One of the videos reportedly shows Kanu inspecting a radio transmitter that was allegedly smuggled into the country.

These videos were presented to support the prosecution’s claim that Kanu made his statements voluntarily.

The statements in question were made at the DSS headquarters on October 23, 24, and November 4, 2015, and also include video recordings of oral statements from October 21 and 23, 2015.

Kanu is said to have made some of these statements during an interview with Sahara Reporters, a U.S.-based online media outlet.

“These are statements he allegedly made when he granted an interview with a US-based online medium known as Sahara Reporters. It was during the same interview that, according to the witness, Kanu used the term ‘Zoo’ to refer to Nigeria.”

In the courtroom, Justice James Omotosho ordered a trial-within-trial to assess whether the defendant’s statements were made under duress or voluntarily.

“It is law that whenever an issue of involuntariness is raised, the Evidence Act and the law requires that an order for trial within trial be made to determine whether a statement was taken under duress or otherwise,” Justice Omotosho said.

“Establishing duress will therefore make the statement in contention inadmissible.”

Justice Omotosho further clarified that the court will also decide whether the absence of Kanu’s legal team at certain points in the proceedings impacts the credibility of his claims.

In one of the video clips played in court, the IPOB leader allegedly confirmed his role in the separatist movement.

“In the three footage played in court by the prosecution to prove that Nnamdi Kanu made his statements voluntarily, the Biafra nation agitator admitted to being the founder and director of Radio Biafra.”

“In one of the footage, Kanu claimed that the Biafra cause enjoyed funding across the globe from all those who believe in the ideals of the secessionist agenda.”

“He claimed the group has representatives in over 80 countries.”

During the trial-within-trial, Kanu also took the witness stand to give his version of events. He told the court he had been physically assaulted during his arrest.

“The defendant claimed, in his testimony, that he was struck by a DSS operative when he was picked up in Lagos in 2015. But the same operative later apologised on their way to the airport to Abuja.”

Following the day’s proceedings, Justice Omotosho adjourned the matter to Thursday, May 29, 2025, for continuation of the trial and a ruling on the admissibility of the contested statements.

Ghost Town In Umuahia As Residents Observe Biafra Day Sit-at-Home

On Friday, Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, came to a standstill as residents observed a sit-at-home order in commemoration of Biafra Day, a solemn occasion to honour those who died in the Biafran conflict.

The normally vibrant city took on a quiet, somber tone, with its streets completely deserted and commercial activity grinding to a halt.

The action followed a directive by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who annually call for a stay-at-home protest to mark the day.

Shops, markets, and motor parks across the city were shut.

Banks remained closed, forcing residents to rely on whatever cash they had on hand.

Both public and private schools were also shut down, leaving classrooms empty for the day.

Despite the lockdown, the atmosphere remained calm.

There were no reports of clashes or confrontations between security operatives and members of the public, and no uniformed personnel were visibly patrolling the streets.

In some neighborhoods, a few youths made use of the open roads to play football, while others gathered in front of their homes, quietly discussing current affairs and recent national developments.

Biafra Day continues to hold deep emotional and political significance in southeastern Nigeria, especially in cities like Umuahia where memories of the civil war remain etched in the collective consciousness.

Friday’s peaceful observance reflected the continued resonance of that history in the state.

Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment To Security, Anti-Corruption On Second Anniversary

On the second anniversary of his administration, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged renewed efforts to tackle insecurity, reduce corruption, and implement reforms aimed at stabilizing the Nigerian economy and uplifting citizens.

Addressing the nation on Wednesday morning, Tinubu acknowledged the widespread concerns over rising insecurity but assured Nigerians that his administration is working diligently to address the situation.

He emphasized that security operatives will be fully equipped to combat terrorism and banditry across the country.

“We do not take your patience for granted. I must restate that the only alternative to the reforms our administration initiated was a fiscal crisis that would have bred runaway inflation, external debt default, crippling fuel shortages, a plunging Naira, and an economy in a free-fall,” Tinubu stated.

Reaffirming the goals of his Renewed Hope Agenda, the president said the administration’s mission includes tackling economic instability, enhancing national security, combating corruption, reforming governance, and alleviating poverty.

“Under our Renewed Hope Agenda, our administration pledged to tackle economic instability, improve security nationwide, reduce corruption, reform governance, and lift our people out of poverty,” Tinubu reiterated.

On economic matters, the president admitted the difficulties families have endured as a result of ongoing reforms, but stressed that these policies are essential for long-term stability and prosperity.

The president also noted progress in the agricultural and energy sectors.

He pointed to declining prices of staple foods like rice and a recovery in oil and gas operations, stating that rig counts have surged by over 400% in 2025 compared to 2021.

He added that the sector has attracted more than $8 billion in new investments this year alone.

“We have stabilised our economy and are now better positioned for growth and prepared to withstand global shocks,” he said.

Tinubu concluded his address by expressing appreciation for the support and patience of Nigerians, underscoring that the administration remains focused on delivering its vision for a stronger and more united country.

He said, “Our administration has implemented several reforms to restore and reinvigorate the national economy and strengthen its social fabric as a strong and united country.”

The president also expressed gratitude to citizens, saying, “We do not take your patience for granted.”

‘It Is Unconstitutional’, US Court Blocks Trump Tariffs

A United States federal court has halted the implementation of most of former President Donald Trump’s broad tariffs, delivering a legal setback to his efforts to reshape global trade through aggressive import levies.

Markets responded positively on Thursday, with major indexes climbing after the decision by the Court of International Trade, which ruled that Trump had overstepped his presidential authority.

“President Trump pledged to put America first, and the administration is committed to using every lever of executive power to address this crisis and restore American greatness,” said Trump spokesman Kush Desai, reacting to the ruling.

The court’s decision marks a significant challenge to Trump’s trade strategy, which relied heavily on tariffs to pressure foreign governments into renegotiating trade agreements.

Since returning to office in January, Trump has used national emergency powers to justify sweeping duties on imports from countries including China, Mexico, and Canada, arguing the trade imbalance and drug influx pose serious threats.

“The question in the two cases before the court is whether the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 (“IEEPA”) delegates these powers to the president in the form of authority to impose unlimited tariffs on goods from nearly every country in the world,” the three-judge panel wrote in its unsigned opinion.

“The court does not read IEEPA to confer such unbounded authority and sets aside the challenged tariffs imposed thereunder.”

According to court documents, the ruling determined that interpreting the IEEPA as granting “unlimited tariff authority is unconstitutional.”

The law allows the president to act during emergencies to combat “an unusual and extraordinary threat,” but the panel ruled that Trump’s actions fell outside those bounds.

The court gave the White House 10 days to begin the process of unwinding the tariffs.

The ruling came from two lawsuits, one filed by businesses, and another by a coalition of state governments, arguing that Trump had infringed on Congress’s constitutional authority over trade and spending.

The White House immediately filed an appeal, with top Trump ally Stephen Miller denouncing the ruling online as a “judicial coup” and claiming the courts were “out of control.”

“Unelected judges” have no right to weigh in on Trump’s handling of trade issues, the administration insisted.

Despite the legal setback, Trump has maintained that his tariff policies are already paying off.

He unveiled the sweeping new tariffs on April 2, setting a baseline rate of 10 percent, with much higher rates for targeted countries and sectors, including steep penalties on Chinese and European goods.

Earlier disruptions caused by the rollout were temporarily eased after Trump suspended some of the tariffs and introduced a 90-day delay on others to allow for negotiations.

Markets rebounded in response to the ruling. Asian stocks rallied, while U.S. and European markets showed early gains.

Japan’s chief trade negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, said Tokyo would review the court’s decision as it headed into another round of talks in Washington.

“Trump’s declaration of a bogus national emergency to justify his global trade war was an absurd and unlawful use of IEEPA,” said Rep.

Gregory W. Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
“These tariffs are an illegal abuse of executive power.”

The Justice Department, defending Trump’s policies, argued that courts had limited oversight over presidential actions under the IEEPA, a claim that drew criticism from constitutional scholars and lawmakers who say the administration is encroaching on the authority of the legislative and judicial branches.

Trump, meanwhile, continues to frame his strategy as beneficial to Americans, citing early wins in trade talks with Britain and China.

However, economic analysts caution that the tariffs could backfire by raising consumer prices, fueling inflation, and prompting the Federal Reserve to maintain high interest rates, potentially slowing economic growth.
