Gunmen Attack Another Abuja Estate, Abduct Businessman

Gunmen struck once again in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), targeting Grow Homes Estate in the Chikakore area of Kubwa during the early hours of Monday. The incident marks yet another in a string of attacks in the area this year.

The latest raid occurred barely 48 hours after armed men invaded Efab Global Estate in the Idu district, also suspected to be the work of robbers.

Chikakore, situated approximately 30km from central Abuja within the Bwari Area Council, has become a hotspot for violent crimes in 2025.

Back in January, about 20 kidnappers invaded a home in the area, abducting five people, including a senior member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) who was later killed in captivity.

In Monday’s attack, a businessman and a housewife were taken during an operation that lasted nearly an hour.

However, the woman was reportedly freed not long after the abduction, when she pleaded with her captors, saying she couldn’t continue the journey. She was dropped outside the community as the group headed for the bush.

A family member of the abducted businessman, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, described the break-in:
“The gunmen, on arrival, removed the barbed wire placed on the house’s fence, before jumping into the compound, and opening its main entrance. Thereafter, they accessed the bungalow after smashing a window attached to it, to meet the man along with his family members. They left with him immediately.”

Attempts to speak directly to the businessman’s wife were unsuccessful.

Overcome with emotion and surrounded by concerned neighbors, she was reportedly screaming as others tried to comfort her and coax her into having breakfast.

Reports confirmed that the gunmen broke into three compounds during their assault.

A resident from one of those homes, who narrowly avoided capture, shared his experience.

“Initially, they headed toward the house where they abducted a woman, whom they later released on their way to the bush. So, from the woman’s home, they came to our compound, but before they arrived, I quickly took cover along with my brother at separate locations.”

“I was able to have a glance at their movements throughout the operation from the place where I took cover. They initially cut the security wire attached to the house’s fence, and forced its gate open.”

The resident continued, describing how the intruders attempted to enter through the main door but eventually smashed a window instead.

“They wanted to enter through the main door attached to the bungalow, but when they realised that it was not going to be opened easily, they went toward one of the windows, and broke the attached burglary. They tried to locate us but didn’t succeed.”

A security guard stationed at the estate responded to the attack by firing gunshots from a concealed position, but this only intensified the situation.

“As the operation was ongoing, one of the security guards attached to the estate moved down to our site, from the estate main entrance, where their office is located.”

“He fired some gunshots from afar, where he took cover. But instead of the gunmen fleeing from our area, they moved toward his direction, firing gunshots in retaliation.”

“The security guard had tactically withdrawn immediately. It was the police van’s siren that arrived about an hour into the operation that caused the attackers to end their operation and leave with the two victims, a businessman and the released housewife,” he said.

This marks the third reported attack on the estate, which remains under development.

In prior incidents, 24 people were kidnapped, and one was confirmed killed.

Residents revealed that the attackers had previously entered through a fence around the phase 4 section of the estate.

After hunters were deployed to secure that area, the assailants began breaching the estate through a section near the railway line connecting Abuja and Kaduna.

In the aftermath of the latest assault, ongoing construction projects and block-making businesses inside the estate have been put on hold.

Workers were seen gathered in groups, discussing the night’s events. Police units from Byazhin and Kubwa have since been making visits to the area.

The FCT Police Command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident in a statement.

“The FCT Police Command, on Monday, 26th May 2025, at about 1am, received a distress call from police officers stationed in front of Grow Homes Estate, Kuchibuyi village in Byazhin, reporting an attack by armed assailants and requesting reinforcement.”

She further explained how officers responded:
“Upon swift deployment to the scene, it was discovered that the armed attackers had breached the estate through the rear perimeter fence and forcefully abducted two victims.”

“The responding police officers exchanged gunfire with the attackers for about 40 minutes and rescued one of the victims, identified as Chinyere Joe. Unfortunately, the attackers escaped with the second victim.”

Adeh confirmed that security operations are ongoing:

“The command’s Anti-Kidnapping unit, in collaboration with the army and other security operatives, has since launched an operation to track down the fleeing suspects and ensure the safe rescue of the remaining abducted victim.”

May 27: Enugu Council Boss, Hon. Ogbodo Celebrates Children, Pledges Continued Investment In Education, Welfare

As Nigeria marks the 2025 Children’s Day, the Chairman of Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu state, Hon. John Ogbodo, has joined millions of others across the nation in celebrating children, describing them as the “priceless treasures and future leaders of our great nation.”

In a statement released on Tuesday, Hon. Ogbodo commended the resilience, intelligence, and potential of Nigerian children, particularly those in Nkanu West LGA, stressing that the council under his leadership remains fully committed to investing in their education, health, and overall well-being.

“Our children are our tomorrow. They deserve the best we can offer, from quality education to safe environments where they can dream, learn, and grow without fear,” he said.

He noted that in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision, his administration has made the welfare of children a top priority, with several ongoing projects including the construction of smart schools, provision of free learning materials, scholarships for indigent pupils, and healthcare outreach programs in schools.

“Through our Smart School initiative and free school meal programme, we are not only improving education but also ensuring that no child is left behind regardless of their background. Every child in Nkanu West must have access to quality education,” he added.

Hon. Ogbodo used the occasion to also encourage parents, guardians, and teachers to continue playing positive roles in shaping the character and future of the younger generation, reminding them that the responsibility of nation-building begins at home and in the classroom.

He also took time to visit selected primary schools in the council area, where he interacted with pupils, distributed educational materials, and promised to scale up child-focused interventions in the coming months.

“On this special day, I reaffirm my administration’s commitment to protecting the rights of every child in Nkanu West. We are building a future where children are safe, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential,” Hon. Ogbodo said.

Children’s Day: Tinubu Unveils Bold Reforms, Declares War On Bullying, Abuse (FULL TEXT)

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of Nigerian children, declaring them as the “pride and future of our great nation” in an address to mark the 2025 International Children’s Day.

Speaking on Tuesday, the President, in a statement he personally signed, highlighted the urgent need for collective action to tackle bullying, violence, and neglect affecting millions of children across the country.

With up to 65 per cent of school-age children in Nigeria reportedly experiencing some form of bullying, Tinubu unveiled a series of bold initiatives to strengthen child protection frameworks, promote safe learning environments, and ensure that no Nigerian child is left behind.

In his message which aligned with this year’s theme, “Stand Up, Speak Up: Building a Bullying-Free Generation,” the President called on families, schools, communities, and the government to work together in building a safer, more nurturing Nigeria for the next generation

Here is the full text: PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU’S MESSAGE ON THE OCCASION OF THE 2025 NATIONAL CHILDREN’S DAY, TUESDAY, 27TH MAY 2025

1. My Dear Children, the pride and future of our great nation, I join you to celebrate the 2025 National Children’s Day with immense pride and profound joy. On this special day, let me reaffirm our commitment to nurturing and protecting you as Nigeria’s future leaders, innovators, and changemakers.

2. Across every school, community, and home in Nigeria today, you are the most precious part of our national fabric, the heartbeat of our nation’s future, and the custodians of tomorrow’s promise, innovation, and leadership. I therefore reaffirm today our constitutional, moral, and intergenerational duty and commitment to safeguard every Nigerian child, protect his rights, and nurture his dreams.

3. This year’s theme, “Stand Up, Speak Up: Building a Bullying-Free Generation,” could not have been more timely as it speaks directly to the culture we are building. A culture where every child feels safe, respected, and heard, both in physical spaces and digital communities. Just to be clear, violence, bullying, and neglect have no place in the Nigeria of today.

4. Globally, more than 1 in 3 children experience bullying regularly. In Nigeria, studies estimate that up to 65% of school-age children have experienced some form of physical, psychological, or social aggression. This is unacceptable. A child who learns in fear cannot learn well. A child who grows in fear cannot grow right.

5. My fellow Nigerians and our dear children, we prioritise child protection under the Renewed Hope Agenda. This includes the full implementation of Nigeria’s National Plan of Action on Ending Violence Against Children (2024–2030), which I recently launched. The plan provides a comprehensive roadmap to prevent abuse, prosecute perpetrators, and support victims, backed by robust financing and multi-sectoral coordination.

6. We are further taking decisive steps to prevent, detect, and respond to all forms of violence against children. As a government, we have initiated a comprehensive review of the Child Rights Act (2003) and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (2015) to expand the scope of protection, strengthen their provisions, close implementation gaps, and ensure nationwide enforcement. We are also leveraging the Cybercrime Act, which is in full force, to protect children from cyberbullying, exploitation, and abuse.

7. I am pleased to note that 36 states have domesticated the Child Rights Act, thus reflecting our collective resolve to protect and provide for the welfare of children. However, laws alone will not be sufficient to protect our children. We require a holistic approach where parents, teachers, caregivers, faith leaders, lawmakers, and citizens must take ownership.

8. We are investing in other focused national systems for child protection, such as the Child Protection Information Management System (CPIMS), which is being scaled up to track and respond to cases in real-time. The Ministry of Women’s Affairs is strengthening community-based child protection mechanisms, training frontline responders, and leading nationwide awareness campaigns to end harmful traditional practices.

9. Additionally, and in alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda, we are committed to implementing proactive measures to strengthen existing efforts to support families and communities, including developing a robust institutional framework focused exclusively on Child Protection and Development. This will ensure greater accountability in safeguarding the rights and well-being of every Nigerian child.

10. We have introduced a National Policy on Safety, Security, and Violence-Free Schools and developed Guidelines for School Administrators, among several other measures. We embed social-emotional learning and child safeguarding into teacher training. Through the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children, we create inclusive pathways for every child to learn, thrive, and succeed, regardless of background.

11. In the care economy, we are expanding access to primary healthcare and upscaling dedicated Mother and Child Hospitals and healthcare systems across all six geopolitical zones, offering integrated maternal and child services. We are working collaboratively with subnational governments to ensure the establishment of similar facilities across the States.

12. We believe every child has the right to grow up in a loving and protective environment. To ensure that children who are unable to remain in their biological homes are given the care and protection they deserve, the Federal Ministry of Women’s Affairs has developed the National Guidelines for Alternative Care for Children. These guidelines would complement the recently launched National Plan of Action on Ending Violence Against Children (EVAC) and strengthen our child protection systems.

13. Through the Nutrition 774 programme and our School Feeding Scheme, we work assiduously to improve child health and cognitive development. The Nutrition 774 project aims to ensure no child in Nigeria goes hungry. Through this project, we are reaching every community, guaranteeing that children receive the necessary nutrition to thrive in their academic pursuits, creative endeavours, and overall health. A well-nourished child is well-equipped and ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.

14. To institutionalise our commitment, the Federal Ministry of Women’s Affairs has recently established a dedicated Department of Nutrition to strengthen policy coherence, programme delivery, and coordination around child and maternal nutrition.

15. We are investing in social protection tools such as the Universal Child Grant and finalising a national Child Wellbeing Index to measure progress, track gaps, and hold ourselves accountable.

16. Our children’s safety cannot be solely anchored on government policies but on community vigilance. This is why I am launching a nationwide “See Something, Say Something, Do Something” campaign today, encouraging every Nigerian to become a child protection champion.

17. To our beloved children: you matter. Your dreams matter. Your voices matter. No one has the right to hurt, silence, or diminish you. If you are bullied or harmed, speak up—you will be heard and protected.

18. I call on all partners, stakeholders, and duty-bearers to sustain and deepen our collective efforts. We must embed child rights in all our budgets, plans, and policies.

19. I commend states taking bold steps for our children’s welfare and urge those yet to act: now is the time. Our children are not just statistics—they are the heart of our nation.

20. Let today mark a renewed movement to build a Nigeria where no child suffers in silence, no child is left behind, and every child grows in dignity, peace, and love.

21. Congratulations to all our children. May your laughter echo across this land as a symbol of Renewed Hope and a prosperous future. Long live Nigerian children. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Mid-Term: ENSIEC Congratulates Gov. Mbah, Applauds Unprecedented LG Developmental Strides

The Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) has lauded Governor Peter Mbah for what it describes as “unprecedented” developmental achievements across Local Government Areas (LGAs) and rural communities in Enugu State.

In a statement released on Tuesday in Enugu, the Chairman of ENSIEC, Prof. Christian Ngwu, extended heartfelt congratulations to Governor Mbah ahead of his second anniversary in office, which comes up on May 29.

The statement, titled “Gov. Mbah’s Disruptive Transformation as Copied by LGA Leadership”, highlights the governor’s landmark initiatives, especially in deepening grassroots governance and empowering rural communities.

Ngwu commended the governor for strengthening local governance since September 2024 by ensuring the independence of ENSIEC and refraining from interfering in local council election processes.

He said this move has allowed LGAs to experience true governance.

According to him, “The governor remains an objective and impactful administrator, who has provided patriotic and unrelenting service to the state, which the council areas and rural people had immensely experienced, benefitted from and enjoyed.”

He emphasized the significance of Mbah’s bottom-up approach, noting that it has transformed the socio-economic landscape of rural communities.

“Gov. Mbah’s unique bottom-up approach to governance has brought the rural people to the front burner and lifted the fortunes of the state indigenes even for those living in rural council areas, where elected Chairmen and Councilors are superintendenting,” Ngwu said.

He highlighted the administration’s investment in security infrastructure, stating: “The governor has invested heavily in security by procuring 150 vehicles fitted with 360 degree surveillance cameras, fully equipped with communication gadgets; placing surveillance cameras and search lights in the whole Enugu, and building a security Command and Control Centre.”

Ngwu also pointed to massive infrastructure improvements: “Constructing and reconstruction of virtually all roads within Enugu metropolis and hundreds of new access roads outside the metropolis, thus making for ease of movement and opening up rural areas, local farming communities and local economic businesses.”

On social services, he sand “In education, healthcare and agriculture; everyone can spot the ongoing 260 Smart Schools; 260 Smart School Farms; 260 Smart Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres and 260 Smart Farm Estates springing up in the 260 political wards, which are in council areas.”

The ENSIEC chairman also praised the governor’s agricultural vision, citing efforts to equip rural communities with farm machinery and inputs.

“Ngwu noted that the governor’s vision of acquiring 1,000 farm tractors; and distributing lots of farm inputs and seedlings was meant to turn agrarian communities into huge commercial agriculture and Agro-industrialisation centres with promises of hundreds of direct jobs.”

He added that the governor’s model is being replicated by LGA chairmen across the state.

“Today, all the 17 chairmen of the council areas in the state have copied the massive road construction trajectory of the state governor, constructing numerous asphalted roads and other earth roads to further open up rural areas,” Ngwu said.

He further stated: “The chairmen are constructing roads to the ongoing smart schools, smart type-2 PHCs and smart farm estates; providing scholarships; empowerment; tech training, bore holes, electricity transformers and energizing neighbourhoods, villages and communities within council areas.”

According to him, these local initiatives have, within just nine months of the council chairmen assuming office, brought significant benefits to the people.

“These moves within a period of nine months of the chairmen’s assumption of office have brought employment, democratic dividends, relief, and renewed hope of better days ahead for our council areas and millions of our people residing in them,” he said.

Concluding, Prof. Ngwu expressed ENSIEC’s appreciation and best wishes to the governor.

“On behalf of the commission, we heartily rejoice with Your Excellency in your two years of impactful leadership, developmental vision and trajectory that have given the state a positive outlook.

“On this auspicious anniversary, we appreciate God for Your Excellency’s vision for the state especially for millions of residents and citizens of Enugu State, which is marked by amazing grace and remarkable accomplishments.

“Indeed, OUR TOMORROW IS HERE.”

FG Begins Payment Of N35,000 Wage Award Arrears To Federal Workers

The Federal Government has started disbursing the long-promised N35,000 wage award arrears to its employees, marking a significant step in its efforts to alleviate the financial burden on public servants amid ongoing economic difficulties.

This development was confirmed in a statement released on Monday in Abuja by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF), signed by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Bawa Mokwa.

According to the statement, several federal workers have already received the initial installment, while others are expected to be credited in the coming days.

The total arrears, amounting to N175,000 per worker, are being paid in five monthly installments of N35,000 each.

Addressing recent speculation in some media reports, the OAGF clarified claims that the N35,000 wage award had been omitted from the 2025 federal budget.

The office firmly denied any such omission, stating: “There was no press briefing by the Accountant General on the matter of wage award. Any report quoting him as excluding the N35,000 from the 2025 budget is entirely false.”

The OAGF reassured workers that the government remains committed to fulfilling its pledge to public sector employees.

It confirmed that “all outstanding arrears of the wage award would be settled in line with the government’s assurance to organised labour and public service employees.”

The wage award was initially introduced as a palliative by the Federal Government to ease the effects of fuel subsidy removal and other economic reforms.

It is designed to serve as a temporary measure while negotiations for a new national minimum wage continue.

Following months of pressure from labour unions and advocacy groups, the commencement of payment has been widely welcomed.

It is expected to bring some financial relief to federal workers who have been struggling with inflation and the rising cost of living.

The OAGF urged federal workers who are yet to receive their payment to remain patient, stating that “the payroll system is actively processing all outstanding entitlements.”

The Kaduna-based cleric revealed the incident in a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Monday, May 26, 2025.

He stated that although he had secured a visa for the pilgrimage, he was refused entry into Medina, where he was scheduled to begin his Hajj rites.
