Anambra 2025: APC Gov’ship Candidate, Ukachukwu Vows To End Soludo’s One-Party Rule

Nicholas Ukachukwu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Anambra State, has declared his intent to unseat incumbent Governor Charles Soludo in the upcoming November 8, 2025, election.

Speaking after receiving the party’s flag from President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, Ukachukwu emphasized the strength of his candidacy, stating,

“When I left APGA, I left with all my supporters. That makes APC stronger.”

He expressed confidence in the APC’s readiness to challenge the status quo, asserting,

“I ran on a joint ticket with the current governor. I was a former APGA senatorial candidate. Now we’ve all joined APC, myself, my deputy, and other leaders across the zones.”

Ukachukwu claimed that the APC now has a formidable presence across all senatorial zones in Anambra, adding,

“It means nothing is left of APGA in the state.”

He revealed that over 80 support groups, including members from the Labour Party and the Young Progressives Party, have aligned with the APC in a growing coalition to defeat the incumbent government. Ukachukwu noted,

“People from Labour, YPP, even APGA, are joining us.”

Reflecting on his meeting with President Tinubu, Ukachukwu shared that the president was impressed with the level of preparation and the warm reception he received during his recent visit to Anambra. He added,

“He gave us the charge to bring Anambra to the centre. He was happy with how ready we are. Now it’s time to deliver.”

Addressing internal party unity following the APC governorship primaries in the state, Ukachukwu noted that the party’s National Working Committee, led by its chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, had successfully reconciled nearly all factions.

NAFDAC Warns VeryDarkMan Over Incendiary Remarks On Drug Market Operations

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a stern caution to social media personality VeryDarkMan (VDM) over comments the agency described as inciting and misleading regarding its enforcement activities.

In a statement released Monday and signed by NAFDAC’s Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, the agency criticised the influencer’s viral video, which it said misrepresented recent regulatory actions in Onitsha Bridge Head Market and could potentially violate Nigeria’s Cybercrime Act.

“What this perpetrator has done is that he has openly told his audience to defy the regulatory processes of NAFDAC following the enforcement operation carried out under the Office of the National Security Adviser,” the statement said.

NAFDAC clarified that the operation targeted open drug markets in Idumota, Aba, and Onitsha, where officials uncovered banned, expired, and falsified narcotic drugs valued at over a trillion naira.

The agency noted that the affected warehouses and shops failed to meet essential Good Storage and Distribution Practices, making them unfit for pharmaceutical operations.

“All the warehouses, shops and parking stores in the three Open Drug Markets did not meet the minimum requirements of Good Storage and Distribution Practices,” the agency stated.

Adeyeye further explained that only a few remaining shops are yet to be properly identified, and those contain outrightly banned narcotics, according to NAFDAC’s database.

“The remaining few shops whose owners have refused to come forward for identification are the ones with outrightly banned narcotics according to our database. The cartel, along with their co-conspirators, are the ones creating incitements,” she said.

Reaffirming the agency’s commitment to public health, the DG emphasized the importance of maintaining safety and quality in drug distribution.

“NAFDAC will continue to safeguard the health of the nation. Our duty is to reduce the incidence of untimely deaths caused by fake or substandard medicines,” Adeyeye noted.

While NAFDAC indicated it would leave it to security agencies to determine whether the influencer had broken any laws, the agency made it clear that it would not condone actions intended to incite unrest or weaken its regulatory authority.

Tinubu Overrides Wike, Gives FCT Ground Rent Defaulters 14-Day Grace To Pay

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stepped in to grant a 14-day reprieve to owners of 4,794 properties in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) whose titles were recently revoked over longstanding ground rent debts ranging from 10 to 43 years.

The enforcement, which began on May 26, 2025, affected properties owned by government agencies, companies, and individuals, underlining what the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) described as its “commitment to carrying out its functions without fear or favour.”

However, in a significant policy reversal, “the President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has intervened.”

“Therefore, by Mr. President’s intervention, holders of the affected properties now have 14 days (TWO WEEKS) to settle the outstanding Ground Rents, with associated penalties.”

The penalties vary by location. “For properties in the Central Area, the sum of N5 million will be paid by the defaulters as penalty, in addition to the Ground Rent owed,” the statement read.

“Those in Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse II, and Guzape Districts will pay the sum of N3 million as penalty, in addition to the Ground Rent owed.”

Meanwhile, “Defaulters in Wuse I, Garki I and Garki II will pay N2 million as penalty in addition to the Ground Rent owed.”

The FCT also addressed property buyers who have not formalised ownership.

“All those who purchased properties from other people, but are yet to register their interests by obtaining the mandatory Minister’s Consent and registering their Deeds of Assignment now have 14 days (TWO WEEKS) to do so at the FCT Department of Land Administration.”

Additionally, the Minister of the FCT, Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, has given another 14-day window to all property holders to settle outstanding bills linked to their Right of Occupancy (R-of-O) and Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O).

“Going forward, the Minister has advised property owners in the FCT to ensure that they pay all necessary bills and charges on their properties as at and when due, so as to enable the government to continue to carry out necessary developmental projects for the benefit of the people,” the statement concluded.

2027: APC Will Be Surprised If It Relies On Assumptions – Sowunmi

The Convener of the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), also known as “The Alternative,” Segun Sowunmi, has predicted that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could face unexpected challenges in the 2027 presidential election if it continues to rely on assumptions rather than data-driven strategies.

Speaking in Katsina after a tour of the northern region, Sowunmi questioned the level of support President Bola Tinubu commands in the area.

He said, “I checked the acceptability of President Bola Tinubu in the region, those who boast without research will be shocked. You cannot win by assuming numbers will just be added up.”

He expressed worry over the APC’s overconfidence and issued a fervent plea: “Oh Lord, don’t let Nigeria regress.”

Sowunmi further urged political actors to unite behind a credible, widely accepted candidate, free of bias or narrow interests.

“That is what ‘The Alternative’ is here to do. We will use the platform to promote a candidate of the people’s choice,” he stated.

He acknowledged the grassroots nature of political mobilisation, stressing that building genuine public support requires time and dedication.

He praised supporters for turning out in large numbers and welcoming the movement’s message.

Additionally, the NOMC leader voiced concern about the country’s persistent security challenges and called on Nigerians to seek divine intervention.

He urged, “pray to Allah to prevail over the wickedness of those perpetuating evil.”

Sowunmi’s remarks follow the November 2024 launch of “The Alternative” in Abuja, a political movement aimed at revitalising Nigeria’s democratic process and offering a viable alternative to the current leadership.

Kano Court Sentences Mosque Arsonist To De^th By H^nging

An Upper Shariah Court in Kano State has sentenced Shafiu Abubakar to de^th by h^nging for setting a mosque on fire while worshippers were engaged in early morning prayers in Gadan Village, Gezawa Local Government Area.

The tragic incident occurred on May 15, 2024, claiming the lives of 11 people on the spot, while 12 others succumbed to injuries during treatment at Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital.

Abubakar was arraigned before the court on Monday, where presiding judge Halhatu Huza’i Zakariya found him guilty on all four charges brought against him.

According to the court, “The charges are culpable homicide, attempt to commit homicide, causing grievous injury and mischief by fire, contrary to the provisions of sections 143, 148 and 370 of Shari’a legal code of Kano State 2000.”

In addition to the death sentence, the court imposed further penalties: “The court also ordered 100 and another 50 lashes and a fine of 1500 against the convict.”

The court also ruled on the convict’s property, stating, “It also ordered the forfeiture of his motorcycle to Kano State government, the proceeds of which should be used to repair the damaged mosque.”

Abubakar was initially arraigned by the Kano State Government on May 25, 2024, and pleaded guilty to a three-count charge of culpable homicide in relation to the 11 initial deaths.

However, an amended four-count charge was filed against him on July 4, 2024, following the death of more victims.

The prosecution presented seven witnesses during the trial, including Abdulaziz Yahya, the village head of Gadan, and ASP Abdullahi Sajoh Adamawa, a police officer attached to Gezawa Police Station.

2027: Peter Obi’s Moves Unclear, Labour Party Presidential Ticket Remains Open – Abure Insists

The Labour Party (LP) has stated that its 2023 presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, appears uncertain about his political direction ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement issued on Monday, the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, through the National Publicity Secretary, Obiorah Ifoh, clarified that recent reports suggesting the LP celebrated Obi’s declaration to recontest on its platform were misleading and inaccurate.

“The leadership of the Labour Party (LP) has said that its presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, is confused about his intentions ahead of the 2027 polls,” the statement read.

Obi, while addressing young supporters in a video shared on the party’s WhatsApp platform over the weekend, declared: “I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party.”

However, the party insists that the narrative of celebrating Obi’s decision is far from reality.

“The impression conveyed by the news on celebrating Obi’s declaration was erroneous, inaccurate and did not in any way reflect the position and mood in the party,” Ifoh said.

He stressed that while the LP does not oppose any member running in 2027, the process must follow internal rules.

“First, while we are not opposed to anybody running under the platform of the Labour Party in the 2027 general elections, we need to make it categorically clear that the party has a long standing rule on how its candidates shall emerge and automatic ticket is not one of the routes.”

Referring to past decisions, Ifoh added: “Recall that at the party’s National Convention in 2024, the party had erroneously granted automatic tickets to our former presidential candidate and the only governor of the party.

However, that decision has since been rescinded and reversed after consulting the statute books.”

The party also questioned Obi’s simultaneous involvement in a pro-coalition group.

“Second, His Excellency, Peter Obi, hours after he spoke of his intention to run under the Labour Party, was on Sunday seen in a meeting of a pro-coalition group in Abuja without the permission and consent of the Labour Party leadership.”

“This to us is really confusing and we think that Peter Obi has not come to terms with his intentions for the 2027 presidential race,” Ifoh remarked.

He reaffirmed that the Labour Party will not align with any coalition, saying, “Labour Party would not go into any coalition or merger of any sort ahead of 2027 general elections,” and described Obi’s association with such efforts as “distasteful” and “unacceptable.”

“It is also an affront to the party leadership and we view his position as a total disregard to the party’s right to make decision bidding its affairs,” Ifoh continued.

Concluding the statement, he declared, “We are therefore by this statement letting Nigerians know that the presidency for 2027 is open to anyone who wants to run under the platform of the party.”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to depart Abuja on Tuesday for Lagos to join in marking the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The golden jubilee celebration of the regional body began in Accra last month, and Lagos will now host a significant segment of the commemoration.

“President Tinubu, as the Chairman of ECOWAS, will highlight the economic bloc’s milestones,” Onanuga said in a statement.

Panelists at the NIIA will further discuss the institution’s trajectory and achievements.

General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), the only surviving Head of State who signed the original ECOWAS declaration, is expected to attend all scheduled activities and deliver a keynote speech at the Eko Hotels.

Dr. Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, will present the welcome address at the event.

President Tinubu’s visit to Lagos will also see him commission several key infrastructure projects on Saturday, May 31.

IPI Urges Akwa-Ibom Govt To Reinstate Channels TV Journalists Barred Over Defection Report

The International Press Institute (IPI) has demanded the immediate reinstatement of Channels Television journalists expelled from the Akwa Ibom State Government House, following the broadcast of a clip showing Governor Umo Eno hinting at plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to reports, the Channels TV correspondent and cameraman were barred from covering government activities after the clip aired, sparking condemnation from media rights groups and civil society.

In a statement jointly signed by IPI’s Legal Adviser and Chairman of the Advocacy Committee, Tobi Soniyi, and Ochiaka Ugwu, Secretary of the Advocacy Committee, the institute condemned the action as “reckless.”

“The state government’s reckless action is an alarming development. These journalists are experienced media personnel with a deep knowledge of government activities, and no journalist should be made to face this kind of humiliating treatment simply for doing their job.”

“We will continue to support and encourage impartial reportage no matter the situation,” the IPI stated.

The group further decried the action as an affront to constitutional provisions safeguarding press freedom and free expression.

“We strongly condemn the Akwa Ibom State Government’s action, which is a direct attack on the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression.

“The state government’s action is also a gross violation of SECTION 22 of CHAPTER 2 of the constitution, which provides that ‘The press, radio, television and other agencies of the mass media shall at all times be free to uphold the fundamental objectives contained in this Chapter and uphold the responsibility and accountability of the Government to the people.’”

Expressing surprise at the decision, IPI called out Governor Eno’s perceived contradiction between public image and practice.

“It is especially distressing and disappointing that Governor Umo Eno, considered a media-friendly state executive, could behave in this unacceptable and anti-democratic manner.”

“We hereby remind him that independent journalism, press freedom and unbiased reportage are essential to democracy.

“We call on the governor to immediately reverse the expulsion and save his government from further embarrassment,” the IPI concluded.

Mid-term Scorecard: Enugu Reps Caucus Applauds Gov. Mbah’s Achievements

The Enugu State House of Representatives Caucus has commended Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for his impressive performance over the past two years, describing his development strides as transformative.

In a midterm assessment statement issued on Sunday by the Caucus leader, Hon. Nnolim Nnaji, the federal lawmakers highlighted Mbah’s achievements in key sectors including road infrastructure, security, revitalisation of dormant state-owned enterprises, and completion of previously abandoned projects.

The Caucus expressed admiration for the governor’s efforts, particularly his commitment to agricultural development and education, noting that these investments are crucial to boosting the economy and creating job opportunities.

“We are further satisfied that the state government’s programmes and projects, be they in education, agricultural investments, and road infrastructure, health sector, among others, are being evenly spread across the 260 wards in the state in line with the governor’s inclusive development model,” the statement read.

Citing specific ongoing initiatives, the Caucus pointed to the wide-reaching infrastructure projects taking shape across Enugu.

“The ongoing construction of 260 Smart Green Schools, 260 Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres, the 260 Farm Estates, transport infrastructure, roads, tourism infrastructure, and numerous other foundations being speedily laid are clear signs that the governor’s promise to grow the state’s economy from $4.5 billion to $30 billion in eight years are realisable.”

The lawmakers also hailed the Mbah administration for prioritising both local and foreign investments, crediting the improved security and infrastructure as major enablers for business growth in the state.

“We equally commend the governor’s drive for local investment and foreign direct investment, which are yielding good results because of the security and infrastructure that have been put in place to make Enugu safe and conducive for business,” they said.

They further praised the urban transformation taking place in the capital, noting the extensive construction activity underway throughout the city.

Dangote Group Named Africa’s Most Admired Brand, Enters Brand Africa Hall Of Fame

Dangote Industries Limited, led by prominent Pan-African investor Aliko Dangote, has been recognized as the “Most Admired African Brand” at the 15th annual Brand Africa 100 awards held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia over the weekend.

The company took home three awards and was also inducted into the prestigious Brand Africa Hall of Fame, marking a first for an African firm.

In a statement released Monday, the Group’s communications unit said the awards followed an independent, consumer-led survey conducted across more than 30 African countries.

The Hall of Fame induction acknowledges Dangote’s powerful impact on African consumers and its role in positively shaping Africa’s image.

Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries, also received a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award was presented in recognition of his efforts in driving industrialisation, creating a world-class African brand, and advancing the continent’s economic transformation through a homegrown enterprise.

Other inductees into the inaugural Brand Africa Hall of Fame include MTN, M-Pesa, Ethiopian Airlines, and South Africa, all of which have consistently ranked among Africa’s most admired brands for the past 5 to 15 years and have built sustainable, globally respected identities.

Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief Branding & Communications Officer for Dangote Industries, reacted to the accolades, stating “the honours reflect the unwavering commitment, excellence, and innovation that define the group’s journey.”

He added “they are a testament to the dedication of the company’s outstanding team, partners, and stakeholders, who continue to believe in the mission to drive sustainable development and economic growth across the continent.”

Chiejina also expressed appreciation for the Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed upon Dangote, noting “this accolade celebrates not only his visionary leadership but also his tireless efforts in transforming industries, creating opportunities, and championing African enterprise on the global stage. His legacy is an inspiration to generations of entrepreneurs and leaders across Africa.”

Looking ahead, Chiejina emphasized that the recognition would inspire the company to continue pushing boundaries.

“We reaffirm our commitment to excellence, integrity, and transformative growth as we empower communities and deliver meaningful value across Africa and beyond.”

During the event, Claver Gatete, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa, praised the inductees and Brand Africa laureates for their role in promoting Africa’s progress.

He remarked “I wish to particularly acknowledge MTN, Dangote Group, mPesa and Ethiopian Airlines for consistently maintaining their distinguished positions among the ‘Most Admired African Brands’ category and continuing to set benchmarks in brand leadership, innovation and continental impact.”

He also highlighted the alignment between the Brand Africa initiative and the ECA’s mission to drive inclusive industrialisation, regional integration, and private-sector growth, while calling for more investment in youth-led innovation, value chains, and a Pan-African Creative Innovation Fund.

Despite the positive developments, the 2025 Brand Africa rankings underscored ongoing challenges for African brands.

While belief in Africa rose to 68% from 64% in 2024, only 11% of the Top 100 Most Admired Brands were African, down from 14% the previous year, representing a historic low.

Thebe Ikalafeng, Founder and Chairman of Brand Africa, reflected on the findings:
“It is disappointing to see the sharp drop in African brands, which mirrors the ranking of non-African nations as the most influential in Africa.”

He continued “It’s a wake-up call for Africa—and a barometer of the continent’s lagging industrialisation agenda.”

“It’s not enough for Africans to say they believe in the continent, they must buy made-in-Africa. For that to happen, African brands must invest in R&D, continue to innovate, deliver quality, and use authenticity as a differentiator.”
