Reps Speaker Bows To Pressure, Withdraws Controversial Bill On Compulsory Voting

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has officially withdrawn the bill proposing to amend the Electoral Act 2022 to make voting mandatory for all eligible Nigerian citizens.

This update was revealed in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Krishi, and shared with Channels Television on Monday.

Tajudeen explained that the decision followed thorough consultations with various stakeholders.

He noted that the bill, which he co-sponsored with Daniel Ago, the representative for Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency, was introduced “with the best of intentions.”

He emphasized, “from the outset, the bill was introduced with the best of intentions, which is to bolster civic engagement and strengthen our democracy by encouraging higher voter turnout.”

Highlighting international examples, Tajudeen pointed out “Compulsory voting has long been practised with notable success in countries such as Australia, Belgium, and Brazil, where it has helped sustain participation rates above 90 per cent, while nations like Argentina and Singapore have also implemented similar measures to foster inclusivity at the ballot box.”

Despite these examples, Tajudeen expressed his preference for encouraging voluntary participation rather than compulsion:

“Nevertheless, the Speaker acknowledges that lawmaking is ultimately about the people it serves and that any reform must respect individual freedoms and public sentiment. Rather than compel participation, he is committed to exploring positive incentives and innovative approaches that will make voting more attractive and accessible to all Nigerians.”

“This withdrawal will allow time for further dialogue on how best to cultivate a culture of voluntary participation that honours both our democratic ideals and the rights of our citizens.”

The bill had already passed the second reading before its withdrawal.

It faced criticism from Nigerians who deemed it unconstitutional. Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Olisa Agbakoba, voiced strong opposition during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, saying “Look at the ridiculous one in the National Assembly about voting being compulsory.”

“If that bill were to pass, I would say, ‘Agbakoba, we will not obey it.’ I’ll plead conscientious objection. I’d rather go to prison for six months than obey it.”

He further questioned the rationale behind the bill.

“Why would the National Assembly want to impose compulsory voting? Why don’t they reverse the question and say, Why are Nigerians not interested? What is the apathy about?”

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, also criticized the bill’s compatibility with constitutional rights.

In a statement titled ‘Compulsory Voting is Not Enough’ issued on May 19, 2025, Falana wrote:
“The said constitutional provisions protect the fundamental rights of the Nigerian people to privacy, freedom of thought and conscience, as well as the freedom to register and vote in national and state elections conducted in Nigeria.”

“However, it is doubtful whether the Speaker and his colleagues have paid sufficient attention to the relevant provisions of the Constitution.”

“Otherwise, they would have realised that the compulsory voting is constitutionally invalid in every material particular on the ground that it is inconsistent with Sections 37, 38, 77(2), 135(5), and 178(5) of the Constitution.”

Drama As Wike’s Men Seal PDP Secretariat, FIRS, Other Buildings Over Ground Rent Arrears

Officials from the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) have sealed off Wadata Plaza, the building that houses the National Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja, due to unpaid ground and tenancy rent.

The action affected other structures as well, including offices of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, disclosed on his Facebook page that the plaza owes N7,603,504.31 in ground rent accumulated over 28 years.

He wrote “On Wadata Plaza being used as PDP National Secretariat, N7,603,504.31 is being owed as 28 years’ Ground Rent.”

The sealing of the PDP secretariat forced the party to relocate its caucus meeting to a different venue.

The FCT administration also sealed other buildings on Monday, including a commercial bank complex, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and NAPTIP offices located in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.

At the FIRS premises, tensions flared between FCTA officials and the agency’s security guards and staff, who initially resisted the sealing.

Eventually, the FCTA officials were allowed access and proceeded with the closure.

Olayinka further revealed that FIRS has failed to pay ground rent for 25 years.

This enforcement comes months after the FCTA lamented losing over N6 billion in revenue due to non-compliance by property owners who have not paid ground rents for more than a decade.

In a statement last week, the FCTA—through Olayinka and the Director of the Department of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima, announced the revocation of 4,794 properties over unpaid ground rent ranging from 10 to 43 years.

The statement read “Ownership of the revoked 4,794 properties in the Central Area, Garki I and II, Wuse I and II, Asokoro, Maitama and Guzape districts, had already reverted to the FCTA, and as from Monday, next week, the government will begin to exercise its rights of ownership on the affected landed properties.”

It added “As usual, this will be done without consideration as to ownership of the affected landed properties. It will be purely in line with extant laws and regulations guiding the process.”

According to the FCTA, these buildings now legally belong to the administration.

Police Detain Woman Over St^bbing Of Co-Wife In Katsina

A dispute between two co-wives turned deadly in Daura town, Katsina State, leading to the arrest of a 25-year-old woman, Rabi’a Labaran, suspected of killing her co-wife, Zainab Lawal, aged 30.

The incident took place late on May 24, 2025, behind Dadi Primary School in the Sabon Gari area, after a domestic disagreement escalated into violence.

According to a statement from the Katsina Police Command spokesman, Abubakar Sadiq, the conflict between the women escalated fatally.

Sadiq explained that a report was made to the Sabon Gari Division by one Nasir Yusuf, the husband, who returned home from the market to find his first wife, Zainab Lawal, lying in a pool of blood, having suffered multiple stab wounds.

He said “upon receipt of the report, the DPO quickly led a team of operatives to the scene and subsequently rushed the victim to the Federal Medical Centre, Daura, for medical attention. But she was pronounced dead by the doctor on duty.”

During investigations, Labaran, aged 23 and residing at the same address, was arrested in connection with the murder.

She confessed to the crime, stating that a misunderstanding with the deceased resulted in a scuffle that ended tragically.

The Katsina State Commissioner of Police, Bello Shehu, appealed to the public to avoid domestic violence and urged them not to take the law into their own hands.

He said “vigilantism only perpetuates harm and undermines the rule of law. Instead, people should seek legal means for redress in cases of disputes.”

Aregbesola Rules Out Alliance For 2026 Osun Governorship Race

Former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has dismissed any possibility of forming an alliance with other groups or individuals ahead of the 2026 governorship election in the state.

Aregbesola made this declaration during a reception hosted in his honor by the Omoluabi Progressives, a political movement he established, on the occasion of his 68th birthday, celebrated in Osogbo on Sunday.

During his address, Aregbesola expressed optimism about his group’s prospects in the next election, stating, “By this time next year, we will all be close to Abere (Osun Governor’s Office). May God make it so.”

Addressing growing speculation about a potential coalition, he clarified the position of his faction.

“So, people are having untrue impression that we will align with anyone (in the governorship poll).
We are not going to align with anyone. We are going to pursue our political interest separately.
No alliance with anyone or group. By the grace of God, this group will win.
We will contest and we will win. The election that will follow that of next year….” he affirmed.

Aregbesola also reflected on the importance of honoring mothers during birthday celebrations, adding,
“Whenever you are celebrating birthday, during the celebration, always remember to pray for your mother.
The pains they endure during childbirth is enormous. So whether alive or late, birthday celebrations should be dedicated to prayers for mothers.”

He went on to express gratitude to the event’s organizers, saying, “I am happy for this honor. I pray for you all, may you continue to succeed in all your endeavors.”

Speaking earlier at the gathering, Moshood Adeoti, who served as Secretary to the State Government under Aregbesola, urged members of the Omoluabi Progressives to stay true to the movement’s founding principles.

Representing Governor Ademola Adeleke at the event, Biyi Odunlade praised Aregbesola’s enduring influence on governance in Osun.

“I celebrate you because you left a good template for good governance in Osun State that can not be faulted by anybody.
Your legacy of service is exemplary and remarkable, one that stands you out among your contemporaries,” he said.

The celebration was well attended by Aregbesola’s political allies from Lagos, members of the Omoluabi Progressives, and former state appointees.

Family Accuses Police Of Extortion, Petitions IGP Over N151m Collected For Son’s Release

IGP Egbetokun

A Nigerian family has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, alleging that operatives of the Nigeria Police Force extorted N151.5 million from them in exchange for the release of their son, Segun Okubajo, who they claim was unlawfully detained.

The petition, filed by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Oke, on behalf of the victim’s father, Mr. Okubajo Kehinde, alleges that Segun, who resides abroad, was abducted by four officers and transported from Lagos to Abuja under force.

“Our client’s son, Segun Okubajo, who had no criminal complaints against him from any source or by any person, was violently arrested on October 9, 2024, by the above-named officers,” the petition stated.

The document further claims that the officers stormed Segun’s residence with “heavy weapons,” disconnected his CCTV systems, seized his phones, and restrained him with leg chains and handcuffs before moving him to the Force CID office in Area 10, Abuja.

According to the family, Segun was targeted by two alleged informants, Oladipo Ibrahim and Shedrach Luka, who are “known informants who specialise in framing up perceived foreign-based Nigerians in collusion with the above-named policemen and others.”

“The duo capitalised on Segun Okubajo’s visit to Nigeria to orchestrate a framed-up, imaginary allegation, without any complainant, with the sole aim of criminally extorting and depriving him of a very huge sum of money,” the petition alleges.

Initially, the officers reportedly demanded a ransom of N1 billion, which was later “negotiated” down to N151.5 million. The family claims they were compelled to raise the money through loans and contributions.

“Our client informed us that upon his son’s arrest, he was later taken to Abuja where the officers initially demanded the sum of N1 billion, but ended up collecting a total sum of N151,500,000.00,” the petition read.

“To save his son’s life, himself and members of the family decided to raise the sum… through loans from their businesses, friends, associates, and their cooperative societies.”

After regaining his freedom, Segun reportedly returned overseas, but the family alleges that threats from the implicated officers have continued.

“The aforementioned police officers have resorted to acts of desperation which include sending threat messages to Segun Okubajo and members of his family against pursuing justice.”

“They also threatened them from seeking justice through any other means or channel, in a desperate bid to cover or obliterate their criminal act,” the petition added.

The family previously submitted a complaint in November 2024 but says there has been no satisfactory response.

They now demand a thorough investigation, the return of the extorted funds, and disciplinary measures against the officers.

“It is not the intention of the instant petition to make public or immediately resort to extensive litigation or drag the presidency, the international community and other local bodies… at this point in time.”

“However, failure to comply shall leave us with no alternatives but to take further steps,” it warns.

The legal team also emphasized that the petition includes “documents, videos and pictures” as evidence.

Meanwhile, when asked if the police leadership had received the petition, Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi responded, “I will find out from the DIG if this has been received.”

Anambra Police Dismantle Bomb Factory At Secessionist Base In Ihiala

A major breakthrough in security efforts was recorded in Anambra State as police operatives uncovered and destroyed a local bomb-making facility in a secessionist hideout located in Isseke, Ihiala Local Government Area.

The operation, conducted on Saturday, was led by a joint security task force made up of the police, the military, and personnel from the Anambra State Vigilante Service.

According to a statement released on Sunday by the state police spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, the hideout had been a formidable base for the secessionist group for over two years, serving as a launchpad for violent activities across the region.

Ikenga stated, “The joint security team comprising the police, military and operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Service on May 24, 2025, extended offensive operations to a criminal hideout at Isseke, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.”

“During the operation, a local bomb factory was destroyed, while assorted locally made improvised explosive devices were recovered and demobilised.”

He further revealed the strategic importance of the site, emphasizing the challenges faced by security operatives over the years.

“The criminal camp is one of the last strongholds of the secessionist group that was impregnable for over two years which the hoodlums used to wreck havoc in the state.”

An explosive buried near the site was triggered during the raid, causing notable damage.

“It is pertinent to report that one of the IEDs buried around the Camp exploded during the onslaught and created a destructive impact on the road.”

“The IED acted as a shield to prevent the Joint Forces from accessing the facility. Meanwhile, no life was lost during the operation,” Ikenga added.

The police spokesperson affirmed that the combined security forces have maintained a strong presence in the area and continue efforts to rid the state of criminal elements.

“The security forces have sustained the operational security dominance and advancement aimed at fully reclaiming the area from the criminals,” he concluded.

Village Head, 13 Others Nabbed For Aiding Bandits

Garba Mohammed, the traditional head of Guiwa village, has been arrested by security operatives for allegedly aiding and sheltering armed bandits operating in the Mashegu area of Niger State.

Thirteen other individuals were also apprehended during the same operation.

According to the Niger State Police Command, the arrests were made on Friday during a joint raid by police and local vigilante groups targeting known criminal hideouts in Guiwa and Telle villages.

The operation is part of an ongoing campaign to clear out bandit strongholds in the region.

Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday.

He said Mohammed was accused of providing support and sanctuary to the criminals.

“On 23rd May, 2025, at about 9am, in continuation of this operation, the team stormed Guiwa and Telle villages based on credible information received, and the Mai-Angwan of Guiwa village Mall,” Abiodun stated.

He further explained the basis for the arrest, citing material evidence found at the scene.

“Garba Mohammed was arrested for screening and aiding banditry activities, using his house as a hideout, with recovery of four motorcycles kept in his custody and ten cattle.”

“Thirteen others were also arrested in different locations within Mashegu LGA for similar reasons,” he added.

The police spokesperson also disclosed that the previous day, May 22nd, security personnel had carried out similar clearance operations in the Mashegu area, specifically targeting kidnappers’ camps within the Magaman-Daji forest.

“In furtherance of clearance operations in Mashegu areas against banditry and other violent crimes, on 22nd May, 2025, police operatives and vigilante members conducted clearance operations in some identified kidnappers’ hideouts in Mashegu LGA such as Magaman-Daji forest and its environs, and in the process, most of the suspected kidnappers fled from the scene and others were believed to have escaped with gunshots injuries,” the statement read.

Abiodun confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of the village head’s involvement, as well as that of the other suspects, in the wider banditry activities plaguing the region.

Presidency Dismisses False Report On Alleged Rejection Of White House Visit

The Nigerian Presidency has refuted a viral document circulating online that claimed President Bola Tinubu turned down an invitation for a working visit to the White House, citing domestic issues and challenges with presidential aircraft.

The statement, widely shared on social media, was branded fake and malicious by the Presidency on Sunday.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, publicly debunked the document through a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

In his reaction, he condemned those behind the disinformation.

“Whoever you are, one day, the law will catch you,” Onanuga warned in a firm post, which included a screenshot of the fabricated document overlaid with the label “FAKE NEWS ALERT.”

The falsified release, appearing to be an official “State House Statement,” falsely claimed that President Tinubu declined a White House invitation, citing “critical domestic priorities” and “logistical constraints, including the unsustainability of presidential aircraft for long-distance travel.”

The bogus statement also falsely bore Onanuga’s name and title, portraying him as its author.

However, Onanuga categorically denied any connection to the release, stressing that it was entirely fabricated.

He clarified that no such invitation or response had been issued by either the Nigerian government or the U.S. administration.

According to the false memo, “the Nigerian government remains committed to fostering strong bilateral relations with the United States and looks forward to future opportunities for collaboration.”

The Presidency has urged the public to disregard the fake release and remain cautious of disinformation spread by what Onanuga described as “disinformation agents, hoax peddlers, fake news propagators, and clickbaiters.”

Uganda Halts Military Cooperation With Germany Over Alleged Subversion

Uganda has suspended its military ties with Germany, citing accusations against the German ambassador of engaging in activities deemed subversive to the state.

Army spokesperson Chris Magezi made the announcement on Sunday via a post on X, stating that all defence collaboration between the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and Germany would cease immediately.

“The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has, with immediate effect, suspended all ongoing defence and military cooperation activities with the Federal Republic of Germany,” Magezi said.

The army’s decision appears to follow an earlier statement issued on Friday, which accused certain European diplomatic missions of backing “negative and traitorous groups” working against the Ugandan government. Among them, German ambassador Mathias Schauer was explicitly named.

Magezi explained that the military cooperation freeze was prompted by intelligence suggesting that Schauer was involved in destabilising actions within Uganda.

“Credible intelligence reports that current German Ambassador to Uganda His Excellency Mathias Schauer is actively engaged in subversive activities in the country,” he stated.

He added that the suspension would continue “until the full resolution of the matter of the Ambassador’s involvement with hostile pseudo-political-military forces operating in the country against the Ugandan government.”

Magezi confirmed the military’s decision to AFP but did not elaborate on the intelligence or specify the nature of the alleged subversive activities.

As of now, the German embassy in Uganda has not issued a public response to the accusations.

This diplomatic fallout comes amid growing criticism from the international community regarding Uganda’s suppression of political opposition, particularly in the lead-up to the country’s presidential election scheduled in seven months.

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of President Yoweri Museveni and widely regarded as his likely successor, has become known for inflammatory social media posts and controversial remarks.

He recently claimed to have abducted and tortured the bodyguard of Uganda’s main opposition leader.

Ugandan media outlets also reported that European envoys, including Ambassador Schauer, held a meeting with President Museveni’s brother in which Schauer allegedly criticised Kainerugaba’s online conduct.

The broader implications of the suspension remain unclear, but the two nations have traditionally maintained a steady diplomatic relationship.

The German embassy previously described bilateral ties with Uganda as being based on “stability and trust.”

Schauer, who has served as Germany’s ambassador to Uganda since 2020, oversees a relationship that includes approximately $335 million in bilateral trade, with Uganda importing goods such as “machinery and chemical products,” according to German embassy figures.
