2027: Kenneth Okonkwo Meets Atiku After Dumping Peter Obi

Former spokesperson of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Organisation, Kenneth Okonkwo, has met with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the last election.

Okonkwo, a well-known Nollywood actor-turned-politician, was previously a strong supporter of Peter Obi, LP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election.

However, in a post on his Instagram account, he explained his meeting with Atiku, describing it as a consultative session on Nigeria’s future.

“It’s a privilege and honour to be invited by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar for a consultative meeting on how best to chart a new course for our beloved country,” Okonkwo wrote.

“The situation in Nigeria today requires the cooperation of every well-meaning Nigerian to ensure that our country is restored to its path of greatness.”

Okonkwo had left the Labour Party in 2024, citing Obi’s failure to build the party into a strong political force.

He accused the LP flagbearer of not providing the leadership needed to transform the party into a credible alternative capable of challenging Nigeria’s “kakistocrats and kleptocrats.”

“After the 2023 general election, Nigerians, including me, had high hopes for the Labour Party. I believed that Peter Obi would seize the momentum and build a solid party of integrity with a strong grassroots base,” Okonkwo stated.

“However, I continued defending him, believing he would privately address the party’s challenges, but to no avail.”

Despite his dissatisfaction with the Labour Party, Okonkwo had earlier ruled out joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) or PDP.

Instead, he emphasized that his next political move would involve consultations and alliances with like-minded individuals.

“With this declaration, I am free to embark on negotiations and consultations to determine the next step in my political journey,” he stated.

“This does not include joining APC or PDP for now, but it does involve consolidating the Labour Party and exploring other options.”

2027: Count Us Out Of Any Coalition, Merger Talks With Any Political Party – Labour Party

The Labour Party (LP) has dismissed any possibility of merging with another political party ahead of the 2027 elections, insisting that such an option is not on the table.

In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, warned the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) against interfering in the party’s affairs, stating that the union has no authority to dictate its direction.

His remarks were in response to the NLC’s recent communique, signed by its President, Joe Ajaero, after the union’s National Executive Council meeting in Yola, Adamawa State.

The NLC had called for a rebranding of the party, suggesting a merger or coalition with like-minded groups to safeguard the interests of Nigerian workers within the LP.

However, Ifoh maintained that while the party remains open to alliances that will strengthen its position, a merger is not being considered.

The Labour Party and NLC have been at odds over party leadership, with the NLC refusing to acknowledge Julius Abure’s re-election as LP’s National Chairman following the party’s convention in Anambra last year.

Peter Obi Attends Chimamanda Adichie’s Book Launch In London

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi joined thousands of literary enthusiasts in London for the launch of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s latest novel, Dream Count.

The event, held over the weekend at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, attracted about 3,000 attendees.

Obi, who arrived in the UK on Sunday, March 2, shared details of his trip, stating that he traveled via Air Peace business class, in line with his usual policy for long-haul flights.

Upon arrival, he proceeded to Cambridge for discussions with development experts, focusing on solutions to Nigeria’s pressing challenges.

Later in the day, he attended Adichie’s book launch, where she engaged in an insightful conversation with journalist and author Elizabeth Day.

Reflecting on the event, Obi described it as more than just a literary gathering, highlighting its significance in showcasing Nigeria’s potential.

He emphasized the importance of investing in education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation—key factors in national development measured by the Human Development Index (HDI).

“Coupled with my earlier discussions on turning around our struggling nation and the exhilarating performance by Chimamanda, I am convinced that with the energy and brilliance of our youth, a collective commitment, and guidance through good governance, the dream of a better Nigeria is within reach,” Obi stated.

He reaffirmed his belief that hope is not lost, concluding with his signature message: “A new Nigeria is possible!”

Gunmen Kidnap Senior Police Officer Along Abuja-Kaduna Highway, Rescued Hours Later

A Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Modestus Ojiebe, was abducted by gunmen along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway near Dei-Dei Police Barracks in Abuja.

However, he was later rescued by security operatives.

Sources revealed that the officer, attached to the Kwara State Police Command, was attacked while trying to fix his broken-down vehicle.

Counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama reported that an ash-colored Mercedes-Benz with four armed men stopped behind him, robbed him and his wife of their phones and ATM cards, and upon discovering his police identity, forced him into their vehicle while leaving his wife and their car behind.

Following the abduction, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Dawaki Division received a distress call and immediately deployed patrol teams to the scene.

Stop-and-search operations were intensified across entry and exit points in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Confirming the development, FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, stated that the officer was successfully rescued later the same night.

The kidnappers, upon sensing the heat from security operatives, abandoned him in Garaku, Nasarawa State, and fled into the bush.

“Upon receiving the distress call, the DPO of Dawaki swiftly mobilized his team and alerted all police checkpoints and key entry points into the FCT. This decisive action led to the officer’s successful rescue and safe reunion with his family,” Adeh said.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, urged FCT residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity through the police emergency line at 08032003913.

NNPC Reduces Petrol Pump Price

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has reduced the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, from N945 to N860 per litre.

The price adjustment follows a recent reduction in the ex-depot price by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which has influenced market rates.

Reports confirmed that some NNPC retail outlets in Lagos have already adjusted their pump prices to reflect the new rate of N860 per litre.

However, as of the time of this report, NNPC has yet to issue an official statement regarding the price reduction.

Reacting to the development, the National Vice President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Hammed Fashola, confirmed the price cut and described it as a positive relief for Nigerians.

“It is true that NNPC is now selling petrol at N860 per litre at its filling stations. Although the price change has not been updated on the portal yet, I was informed that they are working on it,” Fashola stated.

Lagos Assembly Finally Re-Elects Obasa As Speaker

Mudashiru Obasa, representing Agege Constituency I, has been re-elected as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda.

Obasa’s re-election took place on Monday after his nomination by Noheem Adams, a former Majority Leader and representative of Eti-Osa Constituency I.

Shortly after, he took the oath of office, reclaiming the speakership seven weeks after his removal.

Obasa first joined the House in 2007 and served as Speaker from June 2015 until his impeachment in January 2025.

His removal came after over two-thirds of the 40-member House voted him out, citing allegations of misconduct and other offenses.

Following his ousting, Meranda, then his deputy, was elected Speaker, making history as the first female to lead the Lagos Assembly.

However, Obasa consistently challenged his removal, arguing that due process was not followed and that the Assembly complex was militarized during the impeachment.

He also claimed that his removal was orchestrated while he was out of the country.

With Monday’s developments, Obasa has now returned to the position he previously held for nearly a decade.

JUST IN: Drama In Lagos Assembly, Meranda Re-elected As Deputy Speaker

Mojisola Meranda has resigned as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly just seven weeks after assuming the role.

Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency I, announced her resignation on Monday, after which lawmakers re-elected her as the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.

During the session, her colleagues commended her leadership style, noting that she played a key role in maintaining stability within the House.

They also praised her for her humility and for adhering to the directives of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Her resignation followed a reported meeting with top-ranking APC members in Lagos, aimed at resolving the leadership crisis that had engulfed the House.

The crisis began on January 13, 2025, when the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency I, was impeached by more than two-thirds of the 40-member Assembly over allegations of misconduct and other offenses.

Following his removal, Meranda, who was then Deputy Speaker, was elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first female to hold the position in Lagos State.

However, on January 25, Obasa rejected his impeachment, insisting that he remained the Speaker and that due process had not been followed.

He criticized the heavy security presence at the Assembly complex during the impeachment proceedings and argued that the decision was made in his absence while he was out of the country.

Despite Obasa’s objections, 36 lawmakers remained steadfast in their support for Meranda, affirming that his removal was final.

The faceoff escalated on February 17, when security operatives clashed with Assembly staff over access to the chambers.

That same day, 36 lawmakers passed a vote of confidence in Meranda and adjourned proceedings indefinitely.

On February 27, Obasa made a dramatic return to the Assembly complex, accompanied by heavily armed security personnel.

His appearance marked his first visit to the House since his removal in January.

Despite resistance from many lawmakers who remained loyal to Meranda, Obasa maintained that he was still the legitimate Speaker.

Monday’s developments, including Meranda’s resignation and her re-election as Deputy Speaker, appear to be part of a negotiated resolution to the crisis.

However, Obasa’s exact role in the Assembly’s leadership remains unclear.
