Kwankwaso Welcomes Solidarity Delegation From Nasarawa LG Residents In Kano

Former Kano State Governor and leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has received a solidarity visit from residents of Nasarawa Local Government Area at his residence in Kano.

Kwankwaso disclosed the visit in a message shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, where he expressed appreciation to the delegation for standing by him despite recent political developments in the state.

According to the former governor, the visit reflected the courage and determination of his supporters, whom he said remained committed to the collective progress and welfare of the people rather than personal interests.

He noted that the delegation’s support was anchored on their belief in the ideals of the Kwankwasiyya movement, which he described as a philosophy built on grassroots mobilisation and social justice across northern Nigeria.

Kwankwaso, a central figure in Kano’s political landscape, assured his supporters that their resolve remained strong, adding that the movement would continue to advance its core principles.

He expressed confidence that the struggle would ultimately succeed, attributing the anticipated victory to divine grace and the will of the people.

DAILY GAZETTE reports that Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, along with 21 members of the State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen, recently resigned from the NNPP amid unresolved leadership disputes and ongoing legal challenges within the party.

The Phoenix Of The East: Gov Mbah And The Reawakening Of Akanu Ibiam International Airport

When late president Yaradua approved Enugu airport to become an international airport, expectations were high.

The South East region looked forward to a modernized and standard built aviation hub that will drive trade and economic development for the South East sub region.

Despite best efforts the Akanu Ibiam International Airport has not fully taken off. Sabotage and stunted growth became its full name.

Activities slowed down some days. International flights only left once weekly.

Major international Airlines due to poor infrastructure refused to use Enugu international airport.

The people of South East have not seen the airport become a proper functional international entry and exit point.

Compared with other International Airports in the six geopolitical zone Enugu’s international airport remains uncompleted, plagued by poor infrastructure and periodic closure for runway repairs leaving the airport and the people of the South East shortchanged.

Travellers suffered during periods of closure.

The people have had the airport closed several times because of its deplorable runway.

A vast majority of the airport infrastructure remains uncompleted.

There is zero cargo terminal. 15 years after president Jonathan on October 19 2010 approved through the federal executive council for the upgrade of the airport facility and despite the intervention by late president Buhari in building the runway and recently the government of Tinubu ordered repairs on the runway the airport has not delivered optimal service to the people of South East and West Africa subregion.

Poor funding and institutional weakness left the airport having a form of godliness and denying its power thereof.

Despite being a region known for its business prowess, never ending business activities and trade visibility; the south east transportation hub has not benefitted from the international status of the Airport.

Importers and exporters have no infrastructure backbone to aid their trade and economic activities.

They have no option than to operate from Lagos making South East lose billions in regional and international trade deals and job losses. Spare parts trade alone is worth over 200M dollars monthly and is lost to the non availability of a cargo terminal.

The collaboration between the federal government and Enugu state government under the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah who is implementing an infrastructure re engineering of Enugu through the establishment of Enugu Air and expansion of transportation hub in the state has cleared the path for Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA) to rise from despair.

Enugu now has the supporting infrastructure to protect the regional asset and AIIA is the asset of the eastern heartland and must be protected at all costs.

The private and public partnership PPP which is a globally accepted model which will now transfer the financial burden of the infrastructure upgrade to Aero Alliance to completely turn around the international airport while federal and state government retain supervisory control is a step in the right direction.

The government has made sure no worker lost his or her job.

The symbiotic relationship between the Enugu state government and the federal government is proof that connecting to the centre and being on the table of national discussion is a master stroke.

The willingness of the federal government to get Enugu international airport viable and productive is lucid and must be commended.

The concession agreement signed between federal government, Enugu State government and Aero alliance will lead to the complete building of a new cargo terminal that will allow bigger aircrafts both for trade and passenger planes to use Enugu international airport thereby opening up the South East and Enugu state in particular to increased business activities and more job opportunities for our people in spare parts, pharmaceuticals, ICT, etc. It’s an endless possibility.

Enugu and South East businesses especially manufacturers in spare parts, pharmaceutical and other businesses will celebrate this concession as it will make business easier for them allowing local content and integration of our people in the import and export value chain.

The Enugu State government, ICRC (Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission) and the ministry of Aviation and Aerospace development have opened up a new business vista for Ndi Enugu and South East thus ending over 15 years of poor infrastructure and perpetual scaffolding condition of Akanu Ibiam International Airport.

The days and months ahead is laced with possibilities of a new cargo terminal, no more arbitrary closure of the Enugu State International Airport, improved user experience and attraction of over 10 million visitors annually to Enugu.

A safer regional aviation hub that will be attractive to Airline operators and businesses all over the world is in the offing.
Enugu and South East is ready for business.
Tomorrow is indeed here.

Nigeria To Adopt Islamic Finance Standards For Financial Reporting

The Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria has announced plans to integrate global Islamic finance standards into the Nigerian Financial Reporting Framework as part of efforts to strengthen regulatory clarity and investor confidence.

The Executive Secretary of the council, Dr Rabiu Olowo, disclosed this in Abuja, noting that the move is designed to position Nigeria as a major hub for Islamic finance in Africa while ensuring transparency and accountability in non-interest financial reporting.

Olowo explained that the initiative follows the council’s decision last year to adopt the standards of the Accounting and Auditing Organisation for Islamic Financial Institutions for Islamic and non-interest financial institutions operating in the country.

According to him, Islamic finance operates on principles that differ significantly from conventional finance, particularly in areas such as interest prohibition, risk-sharing, asset-backed financing and ethical investments.

“These differences make it important for us to coordinate closely with stakeholders to effectively integrate the standards and innovations of Islamic finance institutions,” he said.

Olowo added that the proposed framework would ensure that financial reports accurately reflect the substance of non-interest transactions, including governance structures and disclosure requirements.

“Adopting the AAOIFI standards will enhance transparency, accountability, comparability and consistency in financial reporting across Nigeria’s non-interest finance sector, while strengthening market discipline and boosting investor confidence,” he stated.

He also noted that Islamic finance has continued to gain global acceptance beyond traditional markets, citing the issuance of Sukuk and other non-interest instruments in countries such as the United Kingdom.

The FRC boss clarified that the adoption of the standards is not intended to disrupt existing financial operations but to improve clarity, credibility and regulatory certainty for institutions offering non-interest financial products.

Speaking on the initiative, Dr Basheer Oshodi of the Non-Interest Finance Institutions of Nigeria said the move is aimed at deliberately building Islamic finance and establishing clear operational guidelines.

“More importantly, we won’t disrupt the financial reporting framework. We will enhance it and give it more potency, so that by the first quarter of this year, implementation should begin,” he said.

I Married My Husband Four Months After We Met – Nigeria’s First Female Professor, Ogunsheye, At 99

Nigeria’s first female professor and renowned librarian, Prof. Adetowun Ogunsheye, has reflected on her life journey, academic career, family, faith and marriage, revealing that she married her husband just four months after meeting him.

Speaking in an interview, the 99-year-old scholar described her childhood as fulfilling and deeply influenced by parents who valued education for both boys and girls.

“I had an exciting childhood. I enjoyed every bit of it. My parents were educated and valued education. My father wanted both male and female children to be educated,” she said.

Ogunsheye, the eldest of seven children, recalled travelling widely with her parents, describing the exposure as an education in itself.

She also credited her father’s strong support for girls’ education as pivotal to her development.

Reflecting on her time at Queen’s College, Yaba, Lagos, she described the learning environment as stimulating, with passionate expatriate teachers who left lasting impressions.

“Mathematics was my favourite subject. Once I saw anything, it stayed with me. I was a visual person,” she recalled.

She explained that her academic path took her from the University College, Ibadan, to Cambridge University, where she studied geography, before later earning a master’s degree in library science in the United States.

“I realised that librarians were the keepers of records. That understanding shaped my decision. The important thing is not the library building itself, but the records of civilisation,” she said.

Although her father hoped she would study law or medicine, Ogunsheye said her choices were guided by personal interest rather than parental pressure.

“I was interested in landforms, geology and making maps. I even set up the map division at the university,” she said.

Recalling the moment she became Nigeria’s first female professor, Ogunsheye said the achievement filled her with gratitude rather than pride.

“I was elated. It was not by power, but by the gifts God gave me and diligence,” she said.

On gender challenges, she noted that while women were often expected to take secondary roles, she did not experience discrimination that hindered her career.

“I managed my home very well and my career too. Women should not fight their natural gifts,” she added.

She attributed her success largely to strong family support, especially from her father, who ensured she was never diminished or sidelined.

Addressing the decline in reading culture, Ogunsheye blamed digital distractions but stressed that reading remains essential regardless of format.

“You still have to read. Whether it is digital or printed, if you don’t read, you can’t acquire knowledge,” she said, urging parents to read to their children from an early age.

On mentorship, she explained that formal mentorship was rare in her time, as life itself served as the teacher through observation, responsibility and shared experiences.

Speaking about her marriage, the nonagenarian revealed that it was brief but decisive courtship.

“I met him through a friend, and we got married within four months. It was divine intervention,” she said, describing her late husband, Ayo Ogunsheye, as a respected educationist and author.

Looking back, she said she has no regrets.
“I am fulfilled. I have many records. I thank God for my life,” she said.

At 99, Ogunsheye said she still values staying informed, listening to the news daily, and drawing strength from her faith.

“My Christian background, education and information about life have kept me hale and hearty,” she said.

TUC, NLC Give Health Ministry 14-Day Deadline Over Stalled CONHESS Review

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Ministry of Health over the prolonged delay in implementing the reviewed Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS).

The unions said the ultimatum followed the government’s failure to act on the report of the Technical Committee on CONHESS adjustment, which was submitted in 2021.

In a joint statement released on Saturday in Abuja, and signed by TUC Secretary General, Nuhu Toro, and NLC Acting General Secretary, Benson Upah, the labour centres demanded the immediate implementation of the committee’s recommendations.

According to the unions, the committee, chaired by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, was constituted to address salary distortions within the health sector.

“Health workers have waited long enough for over five years. The Ministry must act without further delay,” the statement read.

“Failure to implement the CONHESS report is a direct affront to organised labour and the hardworking health professionals who sustain the nation.”

The unions described the continued delay as a deliberate injustice against health workers, noting that it reflected bad faith and institutional disregard for organised labour.

They recalled that adjustments to the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) were implemented promptly, contrasting this with the prolonged neglect of CONHESS.

According to them, the selective implementation of salary structures exposes government insincerity and discrimination within the health sector.

The labour bodies also cited repeated engagements with the Ministry of Health, which they said had yielded no tangible response.

They warned that failure to comply with the ultimatum would result in nationwide industrial action.

“We have exercised restraint for years, but our patience has run out. The Ministry must act now,” the statement said.

“Should the government fail to implement the CONHESS report within the stipulated period, organised labour will mobilise all Nigerian workers for coordinated industrial action.”

They added that the planned action could include mass protests, picketing of health facilities and withdrawal of services nationwide.

“TUC and NLC therefore place all affiliates, including state councils and the FCT, on red alert for mobilisation,” the statement added, urging the government to avert an avoidable crisis by complying within the 14-day window.

Kano Govt Warns Supporters Against Attacking Kwankwaso Amid Political Tensions

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso,

The Kano State Government has warned supporters of Governor Abba Yusuf to refrain from making inflammatory statements or directing insults at the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, cautioning that such actions could attract disciplinary measures.

The warning was issued on Saturday by the Director General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano, Bature Tofa, during the distribution of motorcycles to residents at the Open Space Theatre within the Government House.

Bature stressed that the government would not tolerate acts of indiscipline or disrespect towards Kwankwaso, whom he described as a key political figure whose contributions to Kano politics remain significant, regardless of prevailing political developments.

“We will not accept indiscipline or insults against the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Anybody who engages in such behaviour will face the consequences. We will not accept it,” he said.

He urged supporters of the governor to conduct themselves with restraint and maturity, particularly in the face of heightened political tension following recent political realignments in the state.

According to him, the Yusuf administration is committed to maintaining peace and unity among its supporters, emphasising that political disagreements must not degenerate into personal attacks or abusive conduct.

Bature further reminded party members that discipline and respect for leadership within the political structure were essential for stability and effective governance.

The warning comes amid reactions trailing Governor Yusuf’s recent resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, a move that has sparked debates within the Kwankwasiyya movement and among Kano residents.

DAILY GAZETTE had earlier reported that Kwankwaso reaffirmed his commitment to his political ideals, insisting that he would not trade his principles for personal benefit.

Speaking to party supporters at his residence in Kano shortly after the governor’s resignation on Friday, Kwankwaso said his political journey had always been focused on the emancipation of ordinary Nigerians.

“I’m not for sale. Our political convictions keep me grounded. If I were in it for personal gain, I would have taken the easy route and you would be looking for me elsewhere, not in this place,” he said.

He added that the Kwankwasiyya Movement had endured over the years because it was driven by shared values rather than material rewards.

“Our shared vision is what keeps me going. If I were motivated by greed, I would have taken the money and run, and you would not be here showing your support,” he stated.

Anambra Revenue Service Nabs Four For Illegal Levy Collection In Onitsha

The Anambra Internal Revenue Service has arrested four individuals for allegedly engaging in illegal revenue collection from tricycle operators in Onitsha.

The suspects — Ikenna Udoji, Kosi Iwobi, Chidera Ogbogu and Monday — were apprehended opposite the Army Gate while collecting amounts ranging from N1,000 to N1,200 from commercial tricycle riders.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, the Special Squad Commander of the AIRS, Nathan Obikwelu, said the suspects have been charged to court for violating Anambra State laws prohibiting unauthorised revenue collection from transport operators.

Obikwelu said the arrests were in line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s directive to end illegal cash collections across the state.

According to him, the suspects were picked up during a coordinated operation following intelligence reports that they had been extorting residents, transport operators and investors along the Ogbaru and Head Bridge corridors under the guise of collecting levies.

“The agency recorded another major breakthrough with the arrest of four notorious illegal collectors operating across Ogbaru and the Head Bridge axis,” Obikwelu said.

He added that the AIRS would continue to clamp down on individuals or groups engaged in illegal revenue collection to protect citizens and investors in the state.

Recall that on January 20, the state government, through the Special Anti-Touting Squad, arrested six other illegal revenue collectors around the River Niger bridges and communities in Ogbaru Local Government Area following similar complaints from residents.

The Managing Director of the Special Anti-Touting Squad, Monday Nwokoye, said the arrests were based on tip-offs and intelligence reports, stressing that the government would not tolerate any form of extortion or illegal levies in Anambra State.

Otti Promises Global Push For Akwete Fabric As Political Heavyweights Defect To Labour Party

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has pledged to expand and commercialise the production of the traditional Akwete cloth produced by the Ndoki people of Ukwa East Local Government Area, describing it as a cultural asset with strong global potential.

The governor gave the assurance on Saturday at his country home in Nvosi, Isialangwa South LGA, while receiving a delegation from Ukwa East led by the council mayor, Pastor Chibunna Akara.

Otti said his administration would partner with stakeholders in the area to scale up production and make the fabric more accessible.

“We will work with you to expand the production of Akwete cloth to commercialise it,” he said.

Appreciating the delegation for presenting him with the fabric, the governor disclosed that the cloth had already been promoted internationally through initiatives driven by his wife’s office, including exhibitions outside Africa and at the United Nations General Assembly.

“She went with a lot of the cloths to showcase it to the world,” Otti said, adding that former Minister of Education, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, had also helped promote the fabric by wearing it at international events.

According to the governor, the aim is to support the Ndoki people by making the cloth widely available and affordable through commercial production.

“We must commercialise it, bring the price down and make it available to the people,” he said.

Speaking on governance and infrastructure, Otti stressed that leadership was about improving the welfare of the people.

He revealed that his administration had approved the construction of a general hospital in Ukwa East after discovering that the entire local government area lacked one.

He said an Ndoki indigene donated land for the project and assured that the contractor had been given until the end of the year to deliver a modern health facility for the area.

“I think the most important thing is that we belong to one political party called Abia State, and everything we do is to promote the welfare and happiness of our people,” the governor added.

Earlier, the Mayor of Ukwa East LGA, Lewis Obianyi, informed the governor that several political figures had defected from opposition parties to the ruling Labour Party in the state.

Among the defectors are Hon Paul Taribo, Deputy Majority Leader of the 7th Abia State House of Assembly; Chief Bright Benson, former YPP House of Representatives candidate; Lady Chinedu Brown, a two-time former Commissioner for Women Affairs; Hon Hyacint Iheanacho, PDP ward chairmen leader in Ukwa East; Prof Kamalu of the University of Port Harcourt; and retired Superintendent of Police, Barrister Ben Ogbonna.

Others include women leaders, former political appointees, and community stakeholders from the area.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, welcomed the new members, describing their defection as a positive development for the ruling party.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Paul Taribo said he joined the Labour Party because of the governor’s performance.

“It is obvious that Otti is doing well, hence the need to support him,” he said.

Gov Yusuf Drops Kwankwaso Ally, Appoints Ex-Ganduje Adviser After NNPP Exit

Barely 24 hours after resigning from the New Nigerian Peoples Party, Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has dismissed his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Sunusi Surajo, and appointed a former aide to ex-APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as his replacement.

Surajo, a former chairman of Madobi Local Government Council and a known loyalist of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, was relieved of his duties on Friday.

He has been replaced by a former political adviser to Ganduje, signalling a significant shift in the governor’s political alignment.

Although no official reason was given for the dismissal, the development was confirmed in a social media post by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa.

Political observers view the move as part of a broader realignment within the Kano State Government following Yusuf’s decision to quit the NNPP amid internal party crises.

In his resignation letter addressed to the chairman of his Diso-Chiranchi Ward in Gwale Local Government Area, the governor cited persistent internal conflicts, legal battles and weakening cohesion within the NNPP as reasons for his departure.

The governor’s exit has triggered a wave of defections, with 44 local government chairmen, 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly and eight federal lawmakers pledging loyalty to Yusuf and indicating readiness to move with him to the ruling party.

However, the development has fractured the Kwankwasiyya political movement, with cabinet members and key appointees split over loyalty to the governor or Kwankwaso.

A source told DAILY GAZETTE that the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, has chosen to remain aligned with Kwankwaso and may not follow Yusuf to his new political platform.

Efforts to reach the deputy governor’s spokesperson for confirmation were unsuccessful, but Gwarzo has reportedly been absent from three consecutive official engagements at Government House and has been seen attending meetings at Kwankwaso’s residence.

Several commissioners are also yet to announce their exit from the NNPP, including those in charge of Science and Technology, Special Duties, Sports, Internal Security, Humanitarian Affairs and Women Affairs.

Meanwhile, Kwankwaso has urged his supporters to brace for an intense political contest ahead of 2027, warning them against abandoning the Kwankwasiyya ideology for financial inducements.

Speaking at his Miller Road residence in Kano, the former governor appealed for loyalty and perseverance, stressing that the struggle for political change requires sacrifice and resilience.
