FCTA Demolishes Lugbe Building Materials Market

Officials of the FCT Administration (FCTA) have demolished the Lugbe Building Materials Market in Abuja.

The market, which houses businesses for the thriving building industry in the FCT, sits under electricity transmission lines and on a road corridor for the Ring Road 3 project, which officials said necessitated the demolition.

Advertorial

The FCTA conducted the demolition with a combined security outfit to destroy the stalls built in shafts which the marketers said had been in existence for the past 20 years.

The marketers claimed the demolition caught them off guard, even though they were informed.

When City & Crime visited the place, marketers were seen trying to save their wares from the bulldozers brought to destroy the market.

A drizzle during the exercise did not deter the officials from leveling the market.

The Chairman of Sand Suppliers in the market, who simply identified himself as Abdulrahman, said he was shocked by the total demolition of the market as the information they had was that it would only affect those under the electricity transmission lines.

Abdulrahman noted that transactions of over N2bn were conducted in the market daily, with more than 2,000 persons conducting trade to feed their families.

He said, “We were aware of the demolition, but they did not give us the appropriate time to prepare to pack our goods. We have been conducting our trade in the area for 20 years without any trouble with authorities, but what they told us from different meetings we had was that the demolition won’t affect those not close to the transmission lines.

“That was why we were not prepared to pack our loads. Even when they brought the bulldozers yesterday, we were relaxed, but unfortunately, they destroyed millions of goods just to clear the place.”

Another trader, Michael Obi, said the authorities had informed them of the demolition two months ago but that most traders did not pack out due to the state of the area assigned to them.

Obi said the market provided as an alternative was in Sabon Lugbe but lacked an access road to heavy trucks which brought goods they ordered.

While stating that the demolition was bad timing, he said the traders and residents would suffer from the demolition as the market contributed a huge revenue for everyone.

Speaking at the site, FCTA’s Director, Department of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima, said the exercise was to clean the city from illegal structures and shanties.

He said the market area was a road corridor that led to Gwarinpa and other parts of the city.

It was further learnt that the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has given a contract for the energisation of the transmission lines that pass through the market, hence that the market had to be removed before the contractors moved to the site.

Again, Islamic Scholars Reject El-Rufai As Ministerial Nominee

The Coalition of Quranic Memorisers and Reciters has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to swear in former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai as minister in the interest of justice, fairness, peace and stability of the country.

The Director of Education Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi Foundation who addressed journalists in Bauchi on behalf of the clerics, Sheikh Sidi Aliyu Sise, asked Tinubu to tread with caution and not to swear in unjust politicians with questionable character.

Advertorial

He said the nomination of El-Rufai and his screening by the National Assembly was injustice to Qur’anic memorisers and reciters.

The cleric said, “Now the ball is in the court of Mr President, as Nigerian leader, he should look in to the country with the eyes of Justice, he should look in to the plight of the oppressed, not to succumb to pressure to swear in El-rufa’i a man who oppressed Almajirai under his leadership when he was a governor.”

“We demand for justice as a result of injustice, harassment, trauma, and difficulties encountered by our disciples, teachers and many Qur’anic Scholars, when he evacuated our innocent pupils from the House of Maulana Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi in Kaduna to unknown destination,

“We want to know our offence, that is why we demand for justice from the federal Government because swearing in Elr-ufa’i as minister, we will take it that you are in support of the injustice we suffered in his hand when he was a Governor of Kaduna.

“Now that El-Rufa’i is out of office, we demand for justice rather than for the government to contemplate making him a minister. Any government that prides itself on carrying all along with justice and fairness should not be seen to patronise the likes of the former governor of Kaduna State. We hope that President Tinubu will come out clean on the El-Rufai issue, by ensuring justice to the people he oppressed when he was a Governor, at that time he had immunity and we don’t want to heat the tension in the interest of peace considering the large followers of Maulana Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi,” he added

‘Fake News’ – Fashola Denies Writing Judgement For Presidential Election Tribunal

Babatunde Fashola, former minister of works and housing, has denied drafting judgement for the presidential election petition tribunal (PEPT).

Jackson Ude, a Twitter user, had alleged that Fashola and some lawyers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were writing a judgement the ruling party intends to hand over to the judges.

Advertorial

However, in a statement on Sunday, Hakeem Bello, Fashola’s special adviser on media, said the allegation is “baseless and defamatory”.

He described those behind the allegations as “agents of destabilisation”.

“Fashola expressed his disappointment with the spread of this false information on social media platforms and has called on security agencies to take action against those responsible for spreading fake news,” the statement reads.

“In response to the allegation, Fashola clarified that he has been away from Abuja for an extended period of time, rendering the claims entirely unfounded.

“The former minister believes that these allegations may be part of a wider campaign to undermine the judiciary by those who seek to manipulate the institution for their own gain.

“He emphasises the importance of unmasking the perpetrators and their sponsors and ensuring that they face the appropriate legal consequences.”

The former minister said he has initiated the process of filing formal petitions against the offensive tweets and online reports with the management of X (formerly known as Twitter) and the National Communications Commission (NCC).

He urged the relevant security agencies to treat the matter with “utmost seriousness, as it strikes at the heart of judicial independence”.

He also asked Nigerians to disregard the false allegations and urged them to report any individuals “involved in spreading such dangerous fabrications to the relevant security agencies”.

Last Tuesday, the tribunal reserved judgment on the petition filed by Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), against President Bola Tinubu.

Atiku is challenging the outcome of the February 25 election and praying the court to nullify Tinubu’s victory.

The tribunal also reserved judgment in the suit filed by Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), against Tinubu’s election.

Ketu: Policeman Involved In Accident, Not Mobbed – Lagos PPRO Clarifies

The Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, has refuted the viral video claiming that a police officer shot a man in the Ketu area of the state on Monday.

The Police spokesman disclosed this while reacting to report, via his Twitter handle, that one of the officers of the Command shot a man simply identified as Yusuf in the Ketu area.

Advertorial

Meanwhile, the controversy emerged when a video surfaced, showing a man with a bloodied hand being placed in a commercial bus after sustaining an injury after being allegedly shot by a police officer.

However, the officer in question was seen on the ground, with the onlookers claiming that he was assaulted by an angry mob while attempting to flee the scene after allegedly shooting the bloodied man.

Dismissing the claims, the Lagos PPRO said none of the people involved in the video was shot, adding that they were both victims of a road accident.

He said, “It often amazes me how ‘journalists’ will jettison fact-checking and conveniently adopt lock, stock, and barrel the sensational version of events narrated by passersby who themselves did not witness an event from the beginning.

“This was a road accident that occurred when a BRT bus hit a minibus that had been stopped by the police for illegally using the BRT lane.

“The person with the bloodied hand was not shot at all, let alone by the police. The person on the floor is a policeman, but was not beaten to stupor by anyone. They both were victims of the same accident.

“They have been rescued and are currently stable. Beating to stupor takes more than a second. How come there is no video/picture of the beating while it lasted?,” Hundeyin stated.

Abia Govt Announces Plan To Partner Hungarian Firm In Setting Up Manufacturing Plant

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has given the go ahead for the state to enter into discussion with a Hungarian company, Ortoprofil, to set up a manufacturing plant in the state.

This was the outcome of a meeting between senior officials of the Abia State Government, led by the Governor and top officials of the Hungarian Government, led by Mr. Gabor Kruss, Deputy Ambassador Embassy of Hungary, Nigeria, at the weekend.

Advertorial

Ortoprofil is a Hungarian medical Service Provider with its own affiliate manufacturing custom-made, high quality limb prostheses (lower limb and upper limb prosthesis ranging from aesthetics to body-powered applications), electronic and mechanic wheelchairs and orthopedic/therapeutic shoes, insoles for flat-foot and diabetic foot.

The Hungarian delegation, who was received by Governor Otti in Isialangwa, came with various propositions in different sectors they expressed interest to collaborate and partner with the Abia State Government, ranging from Energy, Health, Education, Agriculture, Sports, provision of portable drinking water among others.

After presentations by Ambassador Kruss and Judith Beres, Economic Counselor Embassy of Hungary, Nigeria, the Abia Government team, which included commissioners for Trade, Commerce and Industry, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu; Education, Prof Uche Eme-Uche; and Health, Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo, deliberated on the different options after which decision was made to go with Ortoprofil.

“The first time we met, we talked about cooperation in the area of healthcare development. I know that you spent over a million dollars retrofitting St. Charles Hospital in Anambra. We will be very interested in that kind of cooperation.

“The Ortoprofil manufacturing plant has been approved. The details will be worked out. I will direct the Commissioner for Trade, Commerce and Industry to liaise with the Commissioner for Lands, who is not here right now, so that we can provide the half hectare of land for them anywhere they choose,” Dr. Otti said, while voicing his seal of approval.

He continued, “That would be some form of partnership. We would provide the land without asking for payment for it, that will be our contribution. From what is stated here, they have 1.5 million dollars to invest. I’m actually looking at a company that will produce prosthetics for upper and lower limbs. I believe they can also produce a whole lot of things including shoes or raw materials.

“For us there are two important things, the production that is happening here and creation of jobs for our people. The production increases our GDP and hopefully our Internally Generated Revenue.”

Governor Otti said the government would also be looking at opportunities in the area of education.

According to him, “The area of scholarship is also something we want to take advantage of. We have a lot of our young people with various initiatives, they are inventors and very innovative in thinking even if they didn’t go to proper school. We will encourage them to go to school. They are better inventors when they go to school.”

However, the Governor described the rest of the discussions as bordering on “profit and loss”, adding that the government would have to put them on the table for proper Scrutiny.

No Plot To Impeach My Deputy – Gov. Obaseki Reacts

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, Monday, stated that there is no plan to impeach his deputy, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu.

The governor, however, noted that the move by Shaibu seeking a court order to stop his purported impeachment is preemptive ahead of his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Advertorial

This is as leaders of Edo North Senatorial District, the senatorial zone of the Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, distanced themselves from his governorship ambition, warning the deputy governor against fueling the crisis in the State.

The governor, while briefing journalists in Benin City during a visit by the Edo North leaders, said the deputy governor has been actively engaging with senior actors both at the national and state level of the APC, negotiating his way into their party, adding that he is at the verge of finalizing moves to defect to the APC.

He said, “Let me put it on record that I am not aware of any plot or any scheme to impeach the Deputy Governor Comrade Philip Shaibu. I have also checked and there was no such plan.

“So, the Court action taken, for me, is a thing of shock and disappointment. I am trying to reflect on the move made by somebody that I have given a broad latitude to do his work as deputy governor. So, for him to take this kind of action is shocking.”

He noted, “It’s clear what has happened in the last few weeks. It is a preemptive move for him to conclude what he has started. Those of you from Akoko-Edo can recall that when we were discussing the issue of your local government chairman and that of Owan, there was a lot of resistance from you on the candidates he wanted to impose on you. I listened to your entreaties and thought that what you were recommending was fair. How can he be recommending the son of an APC leader in that local government? You resisted and I saw reason and acceded to your request.

“The next day, I saw on social media that he was in Abuja robbing minds with the opposition party. I have heard for months now that he has been in closed consultation with friends from another party because he was not sure that you, the leaders of PDP, will give him the ticket as governor in 2024.”

The governor noted, “I must State here that Philip Shaibu has never had the courtesy to discuss his ambition with me. The last time we spoke of my successor after the House of Assembly election, I did say that we should be patient and that our task is to try and finish well and conclude all our projects we started. It’s only when we do this right that we will have the support of the people for my successor.

“I believe that this action by him is a preemptive move to get a court order, keep his ticket and move to another party. I think it’s unfair for our party. We don’t need this sort of crisis. I have been getting calls all over the world and it’s rather sad that somebody who is part of an administration will do this to the administration because of his personal ambition.”

He further stated, “I am not angry but naturally I should be disappointed. I understand what is going on. I thank you for your solidarity. We should not be distracted but consolidate and unite our party and bring all on board. As we start our local government campaigns tomorrow, I urge you to join me so that we can build a PDP that will continue to dominate the politics of Edo State as we must finish well so our people will continue to give us the mandate. Edo will continue to be great as our collective efforts will drive our future as no one man can be bigger than all of us.”

Leader of the group and former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), Alhaji Kabiru Ajoto said, “We are here to amplify the voice of the majority of the people from the six local government areas in Edo North as we have all taken our position to stand with the Governor of Edo State in the ongoing crisis which is really uncalled for.

“What is happening now is really unfortunate as the people of Edo North have met severally over a week thinking of what to do over the face-off between Governor Obaseki and Shaibu. We sent a powerful delegation to the deputy Governor to make peace with his boss but were surprised that he turned it down. We reached out to him but he turned the offer for peace down.

“Taking the governor to Court is most unfortunate and we can’t keep quiet but to speak out over the development. The Deputy Governor decided not to work closely with Mr. Governor because of personal ambition to become governor of Edo State.”
