El-Zakzaky Opposes Military Action In Niger Crises

Leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, has joined Nigerians to ask President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to go ahead with military action against the Niger junta.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) under Tinubu’s leadership had given the junta seven days to reinstate President Mohammed Bazoum or risk sanctions, including military action.

Advertorial

But while addressing a group of Qur’an reciters during a visit to his Abuja residence at the weekend, El-Zakzaky said the bond between Nigeria and Niger Republic had gone beyond neighborhood, emphasizing that the affinity is that of brotherhood.

He said Nigeria ought to ponder on fraternal relations it has had with both the state and people of Niger.

El-Zakzaky said: “Borno territory was partitioned into four parts, Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, and Niger. Most of the territory was part of Borno. Furthermore, if you look at the territory of the Shehu Usman empire, from Borno up to Sokoto, each city was partitioned into two. If you look at the territory of Hadejia, some part of it was annexed to Niger. A part of Gumel’s territory is part of Niger. If you cross the border of Maigatari, you are still part of Gumel’s territory but were ceded to Niger. A part of Kazaure is also part of Niger.

“This is the same fate that befell Daura. A large part of Daura also became part of Niger. Katsina was also partitioned into two parts: Katsina Maradi and Nigeria’s Katsina. They are all partitioned. Moreover, the Gobir Empire was also partitioned between Niger and Nigeria. The hometown of Shehu Usman Danfodio, Marata, is located in Niger.”

“The cultural ties that Niger and Nigeria share are closer than people imagine. We are twin brothers, sharing the same roots and values. I hope this is clear.”

“They are our brothers, since the hometown of our founding father is located in their country. It is unimaginable that we would one day end up fighting against each other. It is shocking that these ruthless people want to use this country to attack our brothers, just to engage in fratricidal genocide, right?

“I heard that some Nigeriens claimed that Nigeria would attack them. I suggest that you perish the thought. Even if the threat of the invasion appears genuine, May Allah forbid this, we are not the ones attacking you. It was the handiwork of another power behind the scene in collaboration with the president who is going to attack you, but not Nigerians. We are not being consulted, we do not support it, and there is no way we can kill one another. Therefore, it is not Nigeria that is going to attack, it is other foreign powers who want to use Nigeria to do so. They are used to this.

“They once did it after the Islamic Revolution in Iran when they used Saddam Hussein to invade Iran. The war lasted for 8 years whereas the people of Iran and Iraq are one people. The cultural ties they share are so strong that a senior position in Iran is being fielded by an Iraqi. Ayatollah Sahrudi who is the Chief Judge of Iran, hailed from Iraq. He is the highest-ranking judge in Iran. You would see a lot of positions being fielded by Iraqis and nobody raises an eyebrow over the issue simply because they see each other as one.”

Senator Okey Ezea Makes Case For Victims Of Nsukka Market Inferno

Senator representing Enugu North Senatorial District, Barr. Okey Ezea has asked the federal government to quickly intervene with relief materials to the victims of Afor-Opi market Inferno.

Afor-Opi market in Nsukka local government area of Enugu state, located along the old 9th mile- Makurdi road, was recently gutted by fire allegedly caused by a truck carrying inflammable products.

Advertorial

The Inferno which destroyed hundreds of shops and goods worth millions of Naira in the market was caused by a truck while dodging some bad portions on the road and fell in front of the market; spilled its inflammable contents which thereafter ignited fire that wreaked the havoc.

The Chairman Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions said that the accident was avoidable and would have been avoided had the 9th-Mile-Obollo Afor-Makurdi expressway, which hitherto provided veritable bypass to motorists commuting the Eastern Corridor, been motorable.

Senator Ezea had recently called for the urgent repair of the 9th Mile-Obollo–Makurdi expressway which is currently in a dilapidated state.

According to Ezea, “The fallen truck would not have had any need to ply the Old Opi-9th Mile Road, had the 9th Mile-Obollo Afor–Makurdi Expressway been in a state of repair. It’s regretable that the road has for many years been abandoned by successive governments despite repeated appeals to the federal government for urgent intervention on the road.”

While noting the untold hardships his constituents and other users of the road suffer on account of its impassable state, Senator Ezea appealed to the Federal Government for immediate repair and reconstruction of the 9th Mile-Obollo-Afor-Makurdi expressway road to ease the sufferings of both commuters and motorists who ply the road.

The Senator further appealed to both the Federal and State emergency management agencies to quickly respond to the plight of the victims of the inferno through urgent deployment of relief materials as well as assistance in the rebuilding and reconstruction of the affected shops.

“I enjoin the government, at both national and state levels, to show empathy by ensuring that adequate compensations are paid to the fire victims to assuage their losses in this critical period of national economic instability.

“We thank God for zero casualty recorded in the conflagration, but I sympathize with those who sustained various degrees of injury while trying to put out the raging fire,” Ezea said.

ICPC Begins Probe Of Former Attorney General, Malami

The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) has stated that it is investigating allegations of corruption and abuse of office against former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, over allegations of corruption and abuse of office.

The ICPC stated this in a memo dated July 19, 2023, signed by H.S. Folaranmi, for the chairman.

Advertorial

The ICPC in a response to a petition filed by Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre), a Nigeria-based non-governmental organisation, said in its memo,

“I am directed to acknowledge the receipt of your petition on the above subject and to inform you that necessary action is being taken on the matter.”

In the HEDA petition dated, July 10, the civic organisation through its chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, had written,

“This petition is submitted to bring to your attention and demand investigation into allegations of corruption and abuse of office against the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami (SAN). We are perturbed by lack of investigation or report of any by the anti-corruption agencies of several reports of corrupt practices and abuse of office levelled against the person and revered position occupied by Mr Malami, being the number one law officer of the country.

“Some of these allegations as conveyed in the media reports and documentary evidence go to the root of breakdown of law and order and total disregard for the rule of law while Mr. Malami served as Justice Minister. These allegations serve as a slap in the face of the anti-corruption agencies and Nigerian people. The failure to respond to many of these allegations presents the agencies before the ordinary citizen as toothless anti-corruption bodies and further emboldens affected public officer.

“Below are but a few of several corruption allegations against Mr. Abubakar Malami; On the 2nd day of May 2022, it was widely reported by various news outlets that the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice; Abubakar Malami SAN distributed 30 car gifts worth over N1,000,000,000:00 (One Billion Naira) to his supporters in Kebbi State. The car gifts included 14 Mercedes Benz, 8 Prado SUVs, 4 Toyota Hilux and 4 Lexus LX. Beneficiaries of the car gifts as reported by PremiumTimes were social media influencers, executive members of Mr Malami’s foundation and women support groups.

“Two, illegal auctioning of sea vessels holding crude oil seized by the Federal Government, violating Section 31(2) and (4) of the EFCC Act 2004 and assuming the role conferred on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as reported by The Cable Newspaper on the 13th July, 2020. The AGF also authorized the sale of these vessels by companies under EFCC prosecution for similar offence of illegal bunkering and this action was admitted by the AGF through his Media Assistant pleading presumption of innocence on the part of the accused, in a case being prosecuted by the Federal Government through the EFCC.

“Three, Ordering the stoppage of investigation of a multi-billion Naira fraud involving Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NISRAL); by a letter ordering the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), the State Security Service (SSS) and the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to all stop investigating the financial misappropriation in NIRSAL, allegedly describing the investigations as an “unhealthy competition” and “sheer waste of government resources”.

“Four, alleged duplicity of payment of $16.9 million fees to two friends as new lawyers for the recovery of the loot traced to a former Nigerian Head of State, Sanni Abacha, after a Swiss lawyer, Enrico Monfrini, hired and fully paid by the previous government, to help in the recovery had completed his brief as reported by PremiumTimes on the 10th of April, 2018.

“It was alleged that Mr. Malami undertook the action with the intention for a kickback from the deal. allegedly seeking the withdrawal of the cases against Bello Adoke, Diezani Alison-Madueke, Abubakar Aliyu and others involved in the Malabu scandal through his letters to former President Buhari on the ground of lack of significant evidence to prove allegations of sharp practices against prominent players in OPL 245 oil deal. As reported by Premium Times on the 18th of February, 2018.

“Reinstatement of Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT) into the Federal Civil Service under a controversial circumstances defying due process, and indicating compromise of Malami by Maina after his dismissal in 2013 for corruption and declared wanted by EFCC as reported by Daily Trust Newspaper of April 3rd 2018. This was after Malami admitted before Senate adhoc Committee that he met with Maina in Dubai, at a time when Maina was wanted by the EFCC for over N2billion corruption.

“On 18th November, 2018, Mr Malami, through a lawyer from his office, Mr Pius Akuta, appeared before a Lagos State High Court to withdraw a case of fraud filed by EFCC against one Dr. John Abebe, a businessman and younger brother to late Stella Obasanjo, but the illegal move was resisted before justice Dada of the Lagos State High Court, on the ground that the AGF has no constitutional power to take over a case filed in the Lagos State High Court, under the fiat of the State Attorney General. This was a clear case of abuse of power that must have been informed by compromise of the AGF office under Mr. Malami.

“Mr. Malami allowed the breach of Covid-19 protocol and regulations at his son’s wedding thereby putting the lives of Nigerians at risk. Please note that in Ghana, a minister resigned from his position because he breached the country’s Covid-19 protocols. This action was a clear abuse of office as the serving Attorney General and Minister of Justice at the time of the action.

Mr Malami also displayed his unpretentious hatred for the fight against corruption by writing a letter dated 16th December, 2016 to withdraw the case of fraud filed against Mr Godsday Orubebe, the former Minister of Niger Delta, filed by your Commission in a case involving over N1.97billion, on the ground that, in his opinion, there was no basis for filing the charges. We demand your review of Mr. Malami’s involvement and action in this case for appropriate action on both Mr. Malami and the suspect.”

“We strongly believe that the above allegations are too serious to be ignored or allowed to go without investigation and by this petition, we demand thorough, immediate, and urgent investigation of the term of former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, the veracity or otherwise of these allegations is essential for the sanity of the public office and image of the country.

“We believe in the prevalence and sanctity of the rule of law, and due process which is why we are forwarding this petition to your office for diligent investigation and timeous action to restore the sanctity of the core mandate of your commission at the verge of collapse as a result of the alleged abuse of power and office by public office holders.”

FG Withdraws Contempt Charge against NLC, TUC

Federal Government has withdrawn the contempt charge against Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, and their leaders four days before the expiration of the ultimatum by NLC to the government to withdraw the contempt summons or face indefinite nationwide strike.

Advertorial

In a letter to Messrs Falana & Falana’ Chambers, Counsel, to NLC, Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mrs B.E. Jeddy-Agba, said “The attention of the Federal Ministry of Justice has been drawn to the Communiqué issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, on August 3, 2023, wherein NLC announced the suspension of its nationwide protests and criticised the contempt summons issued by the National Industrial Court (“Court”), amongst other issues.

“Kindly recall the exchange of correspondence between the Ministry and your Office on the need for compliance with the extant court orders, restraining industrial action of any kind on the part of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress. The position of the Ministry was informed by the need to safeguard the integrity of the court and prevent avoidable service disruption or damages to public facilities.

“However, despite these exchanges/interventions, the labour unions on 2nd August 2023 proceeded with the industrial action through public protests which led to disruption of work and the eventual pulling down of the gate of the National Assembly. The foregoing prompted the Ministry to initiate contempt proceedings by filing Form 48 on the same 2nd August 2023 in accordance with Section 72 of the Sheriffs and Civil Process Act and Order 9 Rule 13 of the Judgment (Enforcement) Rules. It is trite that issuance of Form 48 is just the starting point in contempt proceedings which will only crystalize upon the issuance of Form 49 and the consequential committal order.

“Upon the intervention of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the decision of the labour unions to call off their industrial action after meetings with the President and leadership of the National Assembly, this Ministry did not proceed further with the contempt proceedings, which would have required the issuance of Form 49 within two days of the issuance of Form 48. “It is self-evident that the non-issuance of Form 49 as of 4th August 2023, renders the contempt proceedings inchoate.

“You may therefore wish to advise or guide the labour unions on the practice and procedure of contempt proceedings, particularly to the effect that the issues or concerns raised by NLC in its communiqué on the proceedings have been overtaken by events.”

Female Soldier Guns Down Captain In Adamawa

A female soldier enforcing the curfew imposed by Adamawa government has killed a senior colleague at a checkpoint in Yola, the state capital.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri had imposed the curfew after hoodlums broke into government warehouse and looted several items, including palliatives meant to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy.

Advertorial

Sources told our correspondent that the female soldier simply identified as Lance Corporal Nkiru shot a captain who tried to intervene in her altercation with civilians at Fire Service Round About in the state capital.

Security sources told Daily Gazette that the female soldier had insisted that motorists retuning home during the curfew hours must turn back.

Some of them had identified themselves as workers on essential duty but she stood her ground.

“Some people stopped at the check point explained themselves as workers on essential duties but the female soldier insisted they must turn back. A captain came forward to intervene. Unfortunately she had already cocked her rifle, so she just fired and killed him accidentally,” a security officer said.

The victim was said to have been rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yola, where he was confirmed dead while the suspect was instantly arrested and whisked away by soldiers.

Our reporter learnt that the female soldier has been severally accused of harassing civilians, cocking her rifle at the slightest provocation.

When our correspondent visited the headquarters of 23 Armoured Brigade Yola for confirmation, the Commander, Brigadier General Muhammad Gambo, sent a message that journalists must seek appointment in writing before he could speak to them.

Mali, Burkina Faso To Send Delegation To Niger Over Coup Crisis

Mali and Burkina Faso will send a joint delegation to Niamey, the capital of Niger, on Monday in a show of solidarity amidst a coup crisis, the Malian army said.

“Burkina Faso and Mali are sending a delegation to Niamey to show the solidarity of the two countries with the brotherly people of Niger,” the army tweeted.

Advertorial

The transitional governments of Burkina Faso and Mali, which were established after the military took power by force in 2020 and 2022 in the two countries, also declared their support for the Nigerien soldiers who overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum.

The two countries also warned that any military intervention in Niger would be considered a declaration of war against them and would lead to the withdrawal of Burkina Faso and Mali from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

ECOWAS, a regional political and economic union of 15 countries located in West Africa, has threatened to restore order in Niger by force. (NAN)
