ECOWAS Silent As Ultimatum To Niger Junta Expires

The one week deadline that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) handed the military coupists has elapsed.

Last week, the regional body gave the junta seven days to reinstate ousted President Mohamed Bazoum and restore democratic order.

While Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani-led junta has remained defiant, ECOWAS spearheaded by Nigeria also remains silent as to what should be its next line of action.

Stakeholders have cautioned President Bola Tinubu to tread softly in the use of force against Nigeria’s neighboring Niger.

In his efforts as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Tinubu sent a high-powered delegation to broker peace with Tchiani, this week, but it was deadlock.

Also, the Senate did not approve the letter the President wrote, to seek its consent in mobilising and deploying Nigerian soldiers to Niger.

However, the position of the West is clear on Niger crisis, as the United States, France, and Germany, all backed Tinubu-chaired West African regional bloc to use force.

These European countries have not only evacuated their nationals in Niger, they also partially or completely suspended financial to the country.

As the world awaits what will be the next move of ECOWAS, the United States currently has some 1,000 soldiers stationed in the country, Germany has a continent of roughly 100 troops on the ground, according to some European media.

The situation in Niger reflects that of Mali, which also saw foreign soldiers ordered out of the country after a military coup in 2021.

Neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso — which saw a military coup in 2022 — have both pledged their support to Niger’s should ECOWAS make good on its threat of military intervention.

Meanwhile, Nigeria has the clout to fight Niger economically, as it has closed border and cut power supply, and more sanctions could be taken as days go by with all efforts to return the country to democracy.

PDP Carpets APC Over Ganduje’s Emergence As National Chairman

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has berated the All Progressives Congress (APC) for choosing the “ethically challenged” former Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, as its National Chairman.

PDP in a statement in Abuja on Thursday said the choice of Ganduje by the APC as its National Chairman, in spite of the alleged corruption and bribery allegations against him in the public domain confirms that the APC is a “cesspit of corruption and a haven for thieves, bribe takers and treasury looters.”

Advertorial

The statement signed by Hon. Debo Ologunagba, National Publicity Secretary of the party disclosed that by appointing Ganduje, “notoriously referred to as “Gandola” by Nigerians over the infamous video of him stuffing his gown with US Dollar notes as bribe allegedly from a contractor, while serving as Governor of Kano State, further validates that the APC is a putrid Party of embezzlers and charlatans.

“It also underscores APC’s impunity and insensitivity to the demands of honesty, integrity and moral rectitude required of public office holders.”

“The PDP invites Nigerians to note that only last month, a forensic analysis by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) confirmed that the content of the 2017 “Gandollar” viral video was not doctored.

“It speaks volume of the APC under Senator Bola Tinubu that Ganduje, who should ordinarily be under prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged bribery is rather crowned and rewarded with the position of the APC National Chairman.”

The party also describes the assertion by Ganduje that he will “hit the ground running” to ensure the victory of his Party in the forthcoming governorship elections in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa as a pathetic day-dreaming.

“The PDP also reminds Ganduje of how he was humiliated by Nigerians and failed woefully as Co-Chairman of APC National Campaign Council for the July 2022 Osun State Governorship election, which was overwhelmingly won by the PDP. Indeed, a worse crushing defeat awaits Ganduje and his Party, the APC, in the November 11, 2023 Governorship elections in Bayelsa, Kogi and Imo States,” the PDP said.

Arewa Cautions Against Military Action In Niger

Arewa leader, Alhaji Musa Saidu has advised against military action against Niger Republic, saying it will worsen challenges of poverty in the northern part of Nigeria.

According to him, banditry had done so much damage to the economy of the north , adding that if they used the area as a base for military operation against Niger republic it would further deepen hardship in the north.

Advertorial

Continuing, he enjoined the Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja to endeavour to tackle the security challenges posed by banditry in Sokoto, Zamfara ,Nasarawa, Borno, Kaduna , Sambisa before any movement of troops to Niger republic.

Saidu also urged President Bola Tinubu and other presidents in the Economic Community of West Africa States, ECOWAS , not to be hasty in ordering military action in Niger republic, advising Nigeria specifically that even though it will be a decision of ECOWAS, the burden of funding will fall on the federal government as the giant of Africa.

‘President Tinubu should not move against advice. Nobody should use the north as a base for war. The Chief of army staff still has much to do internally, he is yet t to crush the bandits in Kaduna, communities in Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Sambisa so that our people can go to farm, walk peacefully on our roads.

“Banditry has cut off marriage tiers among several communities in the north. There are some villages you can’t go, the villagers tell you not to come else you will be kidnapped. Most influential northerners cant go to the village for fear of bandits .Our poverty in the north is so much.

“Tinubu is a good man. He should be careful. His enemies should not mislead him. For now let us consolidate our internal security.

“Businesses, farming have all collapsed in the north because of banditry and some persons are talking of war that may affect Sokoto, Kano, Katsina and kebbi. These are likely the base for military operation.

“Kebbi students are still in the custody of kidnappers, some Chibok girls are still with the bandits

“We know the implications when military enters a place. I am a son of a soldier.”

He also appealed to the Nigeria government to consider it that Niger republic is predominantly a poor country, adding that the government should not take actions that will worsen the poverty situation.

” Disconnecting Niger from power is like an action targeted at the poor because the soldiers can have alternative source of light”

Sit-At-Home Ban: Stop Chasing Shadows, Your Aggressive Approach Is Escalating Tensions – IPOB Slams Gov. Mbah

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has advised Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State to cease the militarization of the region aimed at ending the suspended sit-at-home order.

The pro-Biafra group criticized the governor’s aggressive approach, which they argue is escalating tensions and causing unnecessary harm.

IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, issued a press release on Thursday stating, “The utilization of security forces to harass, intimidate, and humiliate our people in Enugu State is unacceptable.”

He accused Mbah of chasing shadows instead of focusing on good governance, alleging that his tactics have led to the deaths of over five innocent people within a month of his governorship.

IPOB contrasted Mbah’s approach with that of his predecessor, Dr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who they claim managed the situation strategically without escalating tensions.

“Governor Peter Mbah should know that those advising him to use excessive force to stop the sit-at-home are setting him up against the people,” Emma Powerful noted.

Advertorial

The group also suggested that while they have suspended the sit-at-home order in solidarity with their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu Kanu, the governor’s use of force is compelling residents to voluntarily observe the order.

“Most Biafrans are not observing Monday sit-at-home because of Simon Ekpa. Biafran’s solidarity is with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” Emma Powerful affirmed.

The IPOB spokesperson further advised Mbah to learn from other states and stop ‘suffering’ the people of Enugu State.

He urged the governor to focus on other pressing governance challenges and allow the sit-at-home order to ‘die’ a natural death.

Comrade Emma Powerful issued a warning against the revival of the defunct Monday sit-at-home order.

He accused Nigeria’s security agencies of enforcing this non-existent order with the intention of dismantling IPOB.

He cautioned, “Some people will be afraid to go about their normal business with the military siege of the State going by the antecedents of the military who have a penchant for abductions, humiliation, and murder of innocent Biafran civilians.”

Tinubu Soft Pedals, Sends High-Powered Delegation To Dialogue With Niger Junta

The Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has dispatched a delegation to Niger Republic with a mandate to expeditiously resolve the current political impasse in the country.

This comes amid the 7-day deadline to restore ousted President Mohamed Bazoum and the threat to use military option to force out the junta.

Advertorial

In a statement on Friday, Ajuri Ngelale, Presidential spokesman, said Tinubu’s reaction was in line with the resolution reached at the end of the extraordinary summit of the ECOWAS held last weekend in Abuja.

The delegation, headed by former Nigerian Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd), left for Niamey on Thursday following a briefing by President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

The former Nigerian Head of State is joined in the delegation by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III and the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Omar Alieu Touray.

The President has also sent a separate delegation led by Ambassador Babagana Kingibe to engage with the leaders of Libya and Algeria on the Niger crisis.

Briefing the two delegations, President Tinubu charged them to engage all stakeholders robustly with a view to doing whatever it takes to ensure a conclusive and amicable resolution of the situation in Niger for the purposes of African peace and development rather than a move to adopt the geopolitical positions of other nations.

“We don’t want to hold brief for anybody. Our concern is democracy and the peace of the region,” the President said.

Speaking after the meeting, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd) said the delegation would meet the coup leaders in Niger to present the demands of the ECOWAS leadership.

Both leaders of the two missions expressed optimism on the outcome of the assignments.
