How Abba Kyari Helped Me Survive Kuje’s ‘VIP’ Prison – Binance’s Gambaryan

Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance Holdings executive facing charges of money laundering and currency speculation in Nigeria, has shared details of his eight-month detention and the role former Deputy Police Commissioner, Abba Kyari played in his survival.

In an interview with Wired, Gambaryan recounted his experience in the VIP wing of Kuje Prison and the harsh conditions he endured while awaiting trial.

On April 8, 2024, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Binance Holdings Ltd and Gambaryan before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja, alleging tax evasion, currency speculation, and money laundering totaling $34.4 million.

As his legal battle dragged on, Gambaryan described his time in Kuje, a facility notorious for housing high-profile inmates, including accused Boko Haram terrorists.

He was placed in the high-security segregation wing—a section reserved for high-risk and VIP prisoners who could afford special treatment.

His 6-by-10-foot cell had a toilet, a metal bed frame, and what he described as a “glorified blanket” for a mattress. A single window, covered with metal bars, let in some light.

“Aside from the bed, this was actually an upgrade from the EFCC dungeon: He had sunlight and outside air—albeit polluted by a trash fire a couple hundred yards away—and a view of trees that swarmed with bats every evening,” Wired reported.

On his first night in Kuje, he recalled feeling relieved despite the circumstances.

“As bad as it was, I thought I was in heaven,” Gambaryan said.

Inside the VIP wing, he was surrounded by powerful inmates, including a cousin of Nigeria’s vice president, an alleged fraudster awaiting U.S extradition, and Abba Kyari, who is himself under indictment in the U.S. for alleged corruption.

He noted that Kyari commanded respect in the prison, with other inmates working for him and even guards deferring to him.

Kyari’s wife regularly brought home-cooked meals for both inmates and guards.

Gambaryan developed a liking for a Northern Nigerian dumpling Kyari’s wife made, and she would prepare extra portions for him.

In return, he shared takeout meals from Kilimanjaro, a fast-food restaurant, with Kyari, who particularly enjoyed its Scotch eggs.

He also credited his VIP prison neighbor with teaching him the unwritten rules of survival—how to obtain a phone, avoid conflicts with prison staff, and stay out of danger.

Despite widespread corruption in the prison system, Gambaryan maintained that he never paid a bribe.

“He was my Red,” Gambaryan said, referencing Morgan Freeman’s character in The Shawshank Redemption. “He was instrumental to my survival.”

His situation worsened on May 17, his 40th birthday, when his bail was officially denied. That evening, his lawyers sent a cake, paid for by Binance, which he shared with fellow inmates and guards.

Wired reported that every night, Gambaryan was locked in his cell as early as 7 p.m.—sometimes even earlier than other inmates—under constant surveillance by guards following orders from the national security adviser.

To stay active, he did pull-ups on the ledge of an entryway to the segregation wing’s courtyard.

However, the presence of cockroaches, geckos, and even small beige scorpions in his cell meant he had to shake out his shoes before putting them on.

In May 2024, he fell ill during a meeting with his lawyers. Initially believing it was food poisoning, he later learned it was malaria after a blood test administered by guards.

He recalled that the guards asked him for cash to buy IV fluids and antimalarial injections. They hung the IV bag from a nail on the wall of his cell as they treated him.

Over time, he struggled with psychological stress, waking up from dreams of freedom only to realize he was still trapped in his tiny cell. Eventually, even “his dreams, too, were of prison.”

In October 2024, Justice Emeka Nwite ordered his release after the EFCC withdrew its charges against him.

Reflecting on his ordeal, Gambaryan expressed a strong desire for justice.

“I guess it did make me angrier? It made me want to get vengeance against those that did this.”

“I wanted justice. And I still do.”

I’m Being Forced To Go On Exile, El-Rufai Cries Out

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has alleged that certain political forces are attempting to force him into self-imposed exile through intimidation and threats of arrest.

El-Rufai made this claim in response to a post on X (formerly Twitter), where a user alleged that plans were underway to arrest him upon his return to Nigeria based on what he described as “concocted allegations.”

A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), El-Rufai accused unnamed political figures of attempting to use the judicial system to silence him.

“They freaked out when we challenged the legality of the premeditated defamation, and went to every length to compromise the judicial process, and this is continuing at the Court of Appeal,” El-Rufai stated on X on Tuesday.

He further alleged that threats and intimidation have been sent to him through his friends, family, and political associates in an attempt to force him into exile.

However, he vowed to resist such pressures.

“They have sent such similar messages of intimidation and threats through many of my friends, family and political associates because they want me to go on self-imposed exile. I will not.”

El-Rufai emphasized that rather than fleeing the country, he had actually put his academic and language-learning plans on hold to spend more time in Nigeria than ever before.

“Silence is no longer golden. Inaction has never been an option.”

He recalled his previous encounters with government authorities, noting that arrests, detention, and political persecution are not new to him.

“The arrest, detention and torture of perceived political enemies are nothing new in human affairs. I have been arrested and detained thrice in the past for expressing my views of previous governments.”

Despite the threats, El-Rufai revealed his firm intention to return to Nigeria in time for the launch of former President Ibrahim Babangida’s memoirs on February 20, 2025.

“There is always a morning after the arrest or detention or torture, and political life continues. As for death, it is when Allah destines it, and it is ultimately the date of every human.”

Sending a direct message to those he believes are behind the attempts to remove him from the political scene, he declared:

“For the attention of the pathetic characters that don’t sleep well whenever I am in Nigeria, take notice that I intend to return in time for the launch of Pres IBB’s memoirs, in sha Allah, scheduled for 20th February.”

Katsina Pays Islamic Scholar N4m Monthly To Pray Against Terrorism

The Musawa Local Government Area of Katsina State has enlisted 75 Islamic scholars to offer prayers for divine intervention in tackling terrorism and related security threats in the region.

The Executive Chairman of the local government, Dr. Habib Abdulkadir, revealed this in an interview with journalists.

Musawa, like several other council areas in Katsina, has been grappling with banditry, terrorism, kidnappings, and cattle rustling.

Over the years, these activities have claimed hundreds of lives and led to the abduction of thousands for ransom.

Other affected councils include Matazu, Jibia, Safana, Batsari, Batagrawa, Faskari, Kankara, Malumfashi, Funtua, and Bakori, among others.

Although security operations have reduced attacks in some areas, communities close to forest reserves remain vulnerable to weekly assaults.

According to Abdulkadir, the Islamic scholars were drawn from various religious sects and are expected to continue supplications for lasting peace in the council and the state at large.

He disclosed that the government spends over N4 million monthly to fund the prayers and as an allowance for the scholars.

With the prayers, peace is gradually returning to some of the communities affected by insecurity in the area. Many people can now sleep with their eyes closed,” Abdulkadir stated.

The chairman further commended both the Federal and State Governments for their ongoing efforts in combating terrorism, assuring that the local government would remain committed to ensuring peace and security in the region.

NUC Increases Private University Application Fees By Over 400%

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has significantly increased the fees required to establish private universities, raising application costs by over 400 percent in a move aimed at strengthening regulation and aligning with evolving educational standards.

In a statement on Monday, NUC Executive Secretary, Abdullahi Ribadu, announced that the price of an application form has been raised from ₦1 million to ₦5 million, while the processing fee has jumped from ₦5 million to ₦25 million.

The commission also directed that applicants who had previously purchased the form at the old rate but had not yet paid the processing fee must now comply with the updated ₦25 million charge within 30 working days or risk forfeiting their applications.

Additionally, the NUC declared a one-year suspension, starting February 10, 2025, on inactive applications and new submissions for private universities, including private open universities.

“The Commission hereby imposes a moratorium for a period of one year on inactive applications for the establishment of new private universities to enable a comprehensive review of such pending applications,” Ribadu stated.

The suspension affects applications that have been inactive for more than two years, as well as those that have only submitted letters of intent under Step 1 of the 14-step approval process.

Despite the moratorium, Ribadu assured that the commission would continue to process active applications and recommend qualified proposals to the Federal Executive Council for approval.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Commission will continue to process pending active applications and make appropriate recommendations to the Federal Executive Council for approval,” he added.

Just In: Enugu Labour Party In Turmoil, State Chairman Suspended

The Enugu State chapter of the Labour Party is facing a major internal crisis as the State Working Committee and local government chairmen have suspended the state party chairman, Barr. Casmir Agbo.

The suspension follows a vote of no confidence passed against him by the party leaders, citing allegations of misconduct and poor leadership.

In a communique released at the end of their meeting in Enugu, party leaders accused Agbo of insubordination, attacks on the party’s national leader, alleged bribery, and the unlawful replacement of elected party leaders without due process.

Signed by 14 out of the 17 local government chairmen, zonal chairmen, and other party executives, the communique also announced the appointment of Chief Kingsley Chideraa Ugwu to lead the party in an acting capacity until a congress is held.

“The Enugu State Labour Party has taken a significant step in holding its leadership accountable by passing a vote of no confidence in the State Labour Party Chairman, Barr. Casmir Uchenna Agbo. This unanimous decision taken by the State Working Committee and Local Government Party Chairmen reflects the party’s commitment to upholding its values and principles.”

Listing the reasons for Agbo’s suspension, the communique stated:

  1. “Serious concerns regarding Barr. Casmir’s handling of recent activities or failure to uphold the party’s mission and values.”
  2. “The organization’s members have lost confidence in Casmir’s ability to effectively guide the party forward.”
  3. “Insubordination, acerbic, vitriolic attacks, and abuse of the personality of our national leader, Mr. Gregory Peter Obi.”
  4. “Non-recognition and sidelining of the party’s elected members and other stakeholders.”
  5. “It’s established that Barr. Casmir Uchenna Agbo runs the party like his private enterprise by taking unilateral decisions.”
  6. “It’s on record that Barr. Casmir Uchenna Agbo demanded and took bribes from our party candidates during the recently concluded local government elections.”
  7. “It’s also on record that Barr. Casmir Uchenna Agbo removed and replaced party executives at the ward, local government, and state levels without recourse to the party’s constitution and with scant regard for the opinions of party stakeholders.”

The party leaders emphasized that the decision to suspend Agbo was taken “with a heavy heart, but we believe it is necessary to ensure the party’s continued success and integrity.”

They assured members that efforts would be made to reposition the party and maintain its core values.

“We will now begin the process of selecting a new chairman who shares our vision and values in an acting capacity. The party remains committed to its mission and values and is confident that this decision will ultimately strengthen, rejig, and recalibrate the party. We appreciate the support of our members and stakeholders during this transition period.”

The communique further stated: “It’s on the strength of the foregoing developments that we recommend that Barr. Casmir Uchenna Agbo be suspended forthwith. Drawing strength from the above recommendation by the State and Local Government Executives, the motion for his suspension was moved by Hon. Chinweuba Ngwu of Enugu South and dutifully seconded by Mazi Augustine Umezuluike (Mason) of Ezeagu Local Government Area.”

As a result, Chief Kingsley Chideraa Ugwu was appointed as acting chairman until the party conducts a congress to elect a new leadership. “The motion for the nomination of the acting chairman was moved by Hon. Chinweuba Ngwu and seconded by Mazi Augustine Umezuluike.”

Another PDP Rep Member Quits Party, Joins APC

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered yet another defection in the House of Representatives as Amos Gwamna Magaji, representing Jaba/Zango Kataf Federal Constituency of Kaduna State, officially joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Announcing his decision, Magaji cited the persistent crisis within the PDP at both national and local levels as the reason for his departure.

Magaji, who serves as the Chairman of the House Committee on Health Care Services, is a two-time member of the House and the Chairman of the Kaduna caucus.

He also holds the position of Deputy Chairman of the House Special Ad-hoc Committee on the Restructuring of Government Agencies and Commissions, tasked with reviewing the recommendations of the Stephen Oronsaye report.

Throughout his legislative career, Magaji has been part of several committees, including those on Defense, Reformation Institutions, Rules & Business, Christian Pilgrimage, Police Affairs, and FCT Area Councils.

Additionally, he represents Kaduna State in the House Committee on Constitution Review.

Magaji’s defection marks the third time a PDP lawmaker has crossed over to the APC since the inauguration of the 10th Assembly, following the footsteps of Chris Nkwonta and Eriatheke Ibori-Suenu.

However, his move has not gone unchallenged. The Minority Leader of the House, Kingsley Chinda, objected to the defection and urged the Speaker to declare Magaji’s seat vacant.

Citing Section 68(1g) of the Constitution, Chinda argued, “Members of the House are lawmakers, not lawbreakers. While the law allows any member to leave the party on whose platform he was elected, it also spells out the consequences associated with such action, which includes losing his seat.”

He insisted that Magaji had not fulfilled the constitutional requirements for defection and should therefore forfeit his position in the House.

Labour Party As Presently Constituted Is Not Ready For 2027 – Kenneth Okonkwo Dumps Party

Former spokesperson for the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council, Kenneth Okonkwo, has announced his resignation from the party, citing internal leadership crises and lack of preparedness for the 2027 general elections.

Okonkwo made this known in a press statement he personally signed on Tuesday, expressing disappointment over the party’s current state.

He stated, “My entrance to politics is for good governance, and I will continue to work for it to ensure that Nigeria becomes a great country of incorruptible men. This aim can no longer be realised within Labour Party as presently constituted.”

Declaring that the party is “non-existent” in its present form, he added, “Since the party is non-existent as presently constituted, I am constrained to resign my membership of the party.”

To his supporters, Okonkwo assured continued loyalty, saying, “To all Nigerians of goodwill who supported us when we needed them most, I pledge my continued loyalty to the Nigerian people in all I will decide to do in my political future.”

The Nollywood veteran also revealed his openness to joining another political platform, stating, “This resignation takes effect from the 25th of February, 2025, which marks the second anniversary of the presidential election of 2023, after which I will be at liberty to join other well-meaning and like-minded Nigerians in charting a great future of good governance for this great country blessed by God.”

Okonkwo blamed the party’s woes on leadership struggles, noting that the tenure of its executives had long expired, while the caretaker committee meant to restore order had been stalled by endless legal battles.

He took a swipe at LP’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, accusing him of prioritizing personal interests over the survival of the party.

“The former National Chairman of Labour Party, Julius Abure, and his former National Working Committee, having conducted no national convention known to law, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the courts having held that the issue of the leadership of a political party is the internal affair of a political party for which the courts do not have the jurisdiction to entertain, there’s no effective leadership of Labour Party at the national level.”

He further explained that the Senator Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee, which was set up by the National Executive Council (NEC) to organize congresses and a convention within six months, was hindered from functioning due to legal roadblocks allegedly created by Abure and his allies.

“Unfortunately, Abure and his colleagues, with the collaboration of outside forces, expectedly, being political jobbers, launched unnecessary legal challenges against this Caretaker Committee that have inhibited it from functioning. It’s more than six months after the inauguration of the committee, and the committee has not even taken off, leading many to conclude that the objective of these politicians of bread and butter with their outside collaborators is to bog down the serious members of Labour Party with frivolous and unnecessary litigation till the 2027 election is over.”

Okonkwo questioned why the party’s leadership had not fought to reclaim seats lost through defections but was instead focused on legal battles to maintain control.

“Isn’t it curious that a national executive of a political party whose elected members are defecting every day to other parties, and who can not wage legal battles to recover these seats for their party, is waging ferocious legal battles to maintain their destructive, choking hold on the party?” he asserted.

PDP Crisis Deepens As Abia State Chapter Suspends BOT Chairman, Wabara Over Anti-Party Activities

The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended its Board of Trustees (BOT) Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, over alleged anti-party activities.

State PDP Chairman, Abraham Amah, announced the decision during a State Executive Committee (SEC) meeting in Umuahia on Tuesday.

He stated that Wabara’s suspension was linked to his endorsement of Governor Alex Otti for a second term, just five months into Otti’s administration in October 2023.

Amah stressed the party’s commitment to maintaining discipline and loyalty among its members, saying, “True leadership and progress require a dedicated and loyal team and not a crowd. The PDP needs individuals who understand the sacrifices necessary to reposition the party for electoral success and for the transformation of Abia State.”

He cited a memo from the party’s State Treasurer, Chizurum Kalu, calling for Wabara’s suspension due to statements deemed detrimental to the party’s interests.

The memo, he explained, accused Wabara of actions that violated the PDP Constitution, specifically Chapter 10, Article 58(c) and (f), which prohibit conduct that brings the party into disrepute.

“In moving a motion that was seconded by the State Organising Secretary, Obinna Okey, the State Treasurer requested that the BOT chairman be debarred from holding any party office and as well, suspended as the BOT chairman,” Amah said.

He called for a renewed focus on strengthening the party, urging members to actively contribute to its growth.

“If you are in this party, be ready to stand for it, work for it, and defend it. We do not need passengers, we need partners in progress,” he stated.

The PDP chairman further explained that the SEC invoked Articles 57(1), (2), (3), 58(1)(b) & (f), and 59(1) of the party’s Constitution (2017 as amended) to suspend Wabara for one month and bar him from holding any party office.

He added, “Article 58(1) and Article 59(1) of the PDP Constitution (2017 as amended) empower the State Executive Committee (SEC) to discipline any member of the Party, who commits any offence(s) provided by the Party’s Constitution, irrespective of the member’s status.”

Amah noted that despite several demands for Wabara to clarify or refute the statement attributed to him, he failed to respond.

“Our attention was drawn to a statement credited to Senator Adolphus Wabara, sometime in October and circulated on social media platforms and national dailies, wherein the said Senator threw caution to the wind and in a brazen display of sabotage to the Party, unilaterally endorsed the Labour Party Governor of Abia State, Gov Alex Chioma Otti, for a second term in office, barely five months after the inauguration and thereby, brought the party to disrepute, hatred and contempt,” he stated.

To ensure due process, the party has set up a seven-member disciplinary committee to investigate Wabara’s actions. The committee will operate within the party’s established disciplinary framework.

The PDP leadership urged members to reaffirm their commitment to the party’s objectives, emphasizing the need to reclaim its influence in Abia State politics.

He emphasized that BUK does not award honorary degrees indiscriminately but strictly recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to humanity and the educational sector.

“BUK does not give an honorary degree on the basis of selling it but strictly based on the contribution of such personalities to humanity and to the educational sector,” he explained.

He highlighted the contributions of Colonel Sani Bello, a former governor of Kano State, who played a significant role in the socio-economic development of the state.

Additionally, he noted that Alhaji A. A. Rano has provided financial assistance to many students by paying their registration fees and continues to support them with N60,000 in financial aid.

He further revealed that no fewer than 7,000 people receive salaries from A A Rano, which aligns with the university’s criteria for awarding him the honorary degree.

The convocation promises to be a momentous occasion, celebrating academic excellence and recognizing individuals who have significantly impacted society.
