Cross River Govt To Review Safety Protocols At Obudu Ranch After Death Of Seven Enugu Seminarians

In the wake of a fatal crash involving seminarians from the Enugu Catholic Diocese, the Cross River State government has announced plans to reassess and strengthen safety measures at the Obudu Ranch Resort.

Governor Bassey Otu made this known on Sunday through a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Nsa Gill.

The tragic incident occurred on Saturday near the Ikwette community bottom hill and involved a vehicle carrying thirteen passengers.

Preliminary findings suggest that brake failure may have caused the crash, which claimed four lives and left nine others injured.

Emergency responders, including troops from the Nigerian Army stationed at the ranch, were quick to arrive at the scene and render assistance.

“Details of the victims are still being gathered. They were seminarians travelling in a bus owned by the Enugu Catholic Diocese,” the governor said.

According to the statement, the group had just concluded a tour of the ranch and was being led by a reverend father when the crash occurred just outside the main premises of the resort.

“The state government is contacting the victims’ families to offer support and necessary assistance during this difficult period,” Otu said.

He called on tourists and travelers to exercise caution while visiting the resort, emphasizing the need for well-maintained vehicles and strict adherence to safety protocols.

Otu further urged the public and media to “respect the privacy and show compassion to the victims’ families as they cope with their loss.”

Dismiss PDP Governors’ Suit Challenging Rivers Emergency Rule, Impose N1bn Fine On Plaintiffs For Wasting Court’s Time – NASS Tells Supreme Court

The National Assembly has urged the Supreme Court to throw out a legal challenge brought by 11 governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the alleged plan to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State.

In its preliminary objection, the National Assembly argued that the suit was “procedurally flawed and lacked merit.”

It asked the court to dismiss the case on grounds that it lacked jurisdiction and requested that N1 billion be awarded against the plaintiffs as damages for filing what it called “a frivolous and speculative suit.”

The objection stressed that due process was not followed. “With the objection amongst others submitted, due process of instituting the action in the suit was not followed by the plaintiffs before taking this step against the second defendants,” the NASS noted.

It pointed out that the plaintiffs failed to serve the statutorily required three-month pre-action notice to the Clerk of the National Assembly, as mandated under Section 21 of the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act, 2017.

According to the legislation, “a person who has a cause of action against a Legislative House shall serve a three months’ notice to the office of the Clerk of the Legislative House disclosing the cause of action and reliefs sought.”

The Assembly also argued that the governors failed to obtain resolutions from their respective State Houses of Assembly, which is a key requirement for approaching the Supreme Court under its original jurisdiction, as provided for in the Supreme Court (Original Jurisdiction) Act, 2002.

Responding to alleged threats raised in the plaintiffs’ filing, which referenced a statement made by the Attorney-General during a press briefing, the National Assembly asserted that it had no involvement.

“Considering the affidavit in support and the threats alleged, which did not come from the second defendant, there is no cause of action against it,” the Assembly said.

“This is a suit relating to an alleged threatened declaration or proclamation of a state of emergency in the plaintiffs’ states by the Honourable Attorney General and Minister of Justice.”

“This is allegedly a result of the statement of the first defendant in a press briefing held March 19, 2025, wherein he is said to have stated that after Rivers State, ‘…it can be anybody’s turn tomorrow….’ None of the alleged threat or statement is alluded to the second defendant or any of its officers.”

The 11 PDP governors, representing Adamawa, Enugu, Osun, Oyo, Bauchi, Akwa Ibom, Plateau, Delta, Taraba, Zamfara, and Bayelsa, had filed the suit to question whether the President has the constitutional authority to dissolve a democratically elected state institution and appoint unelected officials under the guise of a state of emergency.

But the National Assembly argued further that the plaintiffs were improperly trying to use the court to interfere with how it exercises its constitutional duties, particularly in relation to the use of voice votes to approve states of emergency under Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution.

Describing the suit as “speculative and an abuse of court process,” the Assembly added.

“The second defendant/applicant, having observed the several deficiencies in the suit of the plaintiffs which go contrary to the provisions of the laws and the jurisdiction of the court, raises an objection and submits that the 11 states (plaintiffs) approached the court wrongly and in abuse of court process.”

The objection, backed by six legal grounds, claimed the plaintiffs lacked both a cause of action and the legal standing (locus standi) to bring the suit.

Supporting the objection, Godswill Onyegbu, a legal officer in the National Assembly’s Directorate of Legal Services, deposed in an affidavit that the plaintiffs had not followed due process.

He argued: “The plaintiffs did not obtain the required resolutions from the Houses of Assembly in their respective states to authorise the suit under the Supreme Court’s original jurisdiction.”

“There is no cause of action against the second defendant, as no threat emanated from the second defendant’s office.”

He further stated: “The plaintiffs lacked the locus standi to institute this suit as none of the plaintiffs had shown that it has suffered anything far and above any other persons or people of Rivers State.”

“There are no disputes involving questions of law or fact upon which the existence or extent of a legal right depends between the parties. The plaintiffs have not established any legal rights against the second defendant to warrant equitable relief such as a perpetual injunction,” Onyegbu said.

Calling on the court to strike out the suit entirely, he added: “That the plaintiffs’ states’ houses of assembly did not pass any resolution by a simple majority of the members present and sitting at the time of the resolution authorising the plaintiffs to institute this action.”

“That the plaintiffs have not established any legal rights against the second defendant to enjoy the equitable remedy of perpetual injunction. That it is in the best interest of justice for the court to dismiss or strike out this suit against the second defendant with a cost of N1 billion only, jointly and severally against the plaintiffs.”

Group Urges South-East Governors To Harness Agricultural And Tourism Potentials For Economic Growth

The Ndigbo Unity Forum (NUF), a prominent pan-Igbo socio-cultural group, has called on governors of the South-East to urgently tap into the region’s vast agricultural and tourism potentials, which it says can drive economic development and create massive job opportunities.

This appeal was contained in a joint statement issued in Enugu on Monday by the group’s President, Chief Augustine Chukwudum, and Secretary-General, Mr. Tony Igbokwe.

The statement emphasized the need for state governments in the region to begin serious work and develop a comprehensive blueprint that would unlock the long-neglected agricultural and tourism assets of the South-East.

“The agriculture and tourism sectors can transform the region to Holland of Africa. Holland as a country harnessed its agricultural and tourism sectors; thereby making the country a great economic power in Europe today,” the group stated.

According to NUF, the South-East has continued to lose over $150 billion annually due to underdevelopment in both sectors, losses that could have been prevented if these potentials were properly harnessed.

The group added that such development would also help to significantly reduce crime rates.

It also cited the missed opportunity in palm oil production: “Malaysia came to South-East before Nigerian independent and picked up palm seedlings (palm fronts), went to their country, planted, nurtured and researched into it. Today, Malaysia generates over $20 billion (USA dollars) yearly from palm oil and its derivatives.

“While South-East where the Malaysia palm seedlings came from today is importing palm oil. What we have in excess previously has left us; thus, showing how negligence we are as a people and government,” it added.

The group decried the neglect of vast fertile lands and rich tourist attractions in the region, blaming it in part on over-dependence on monthly federal allocations.

“The zone had the best untapped tourism sites as well as fertile and arable land but neglected these great sectors because of monthly allocation that comes from Abuja,” the statement read.

“Tourism sites and potentials are very much abound that can attract more than 10 million tourists yearly to the region.

“It is evident that if our governors pay attention to these sectors mentioned, more than 75 per cent of our people will be engaged; thereby, making the region an investment and job hub in the country,” it said.

The group urged the governors to partner with the private sector and create a conducive environment for investors willing to commit funds into the agriculture and tourism value chains.

“South-East governors should leverage on private sector investors to push these two goldmine sectors waiting to be tapped, and create enable environment for the investors who will invest heavily in these sectors.

“The governors should put the region in the world tourism calendar as this will go a long way in positioning the zone as the best tourism destination in the world as the South-East has so much rich culture and tourist sites waiting to be tapped,” the statement concluded.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Monday announced the release of the results for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), revealing a significant number of low scores among candidates.

According to data provided by the examination body, out of the total 1,955,069 candidates who took part in the nationwide assessment, more than 1.5 million scored below the 200 mark.

The official statement released by JAMB disclosed that only 420,415 candidates managed to score above 200, a result threshold often considered a baseline for competitive admission into tertiary institutions.

Further breakdown of the results shows that 4,756 candidates earned scores above 320, while 7,658 candidates fell within the 300–319 score bracket.

The Board also provided insight into the performance of young test-takers.

“40,247 underage candidates were permitted to demonstrate their exceptional abilities,” JAMB stated, indicating a continued effort to accommodate gifted learners.

However, the success rate among this group remained modest.

“Only 467 of these candidates (1.16%) achieved scores that meet the threshold for exceptional ability as defined for the UTME, with their performance in the subsequent three stages still pending,” the Board added.

This year’s outcome raises concerns about the level of preparedness among students and the persistent issues affecting educational standards across the country.

UN Judge Jailed In UK For Enslaving Ugandan Woman

A prominent Ugandan judge and former United Nations judicial officer, Lydia Mugambe, has been sentenced to six years and four months in prison by a UK court after being found guilty of forcing a young Ugandan woman into domestic servitude.

The 50-year-old was convicted in March at Oxford Crown Court on multiple charges, including conspiracy to breach UK immigration law, facilitating travel for exploitation, forced labor, and conspiracy to intimidate a witness.

During her time pursuing a PhD in law at the University of Oxford, Mugambe exploited her high status and took advantage of the victim’s vulnerable position, prosecutors said.

The court heard that Mugambe prevented the woman from gaining lawful employment and instead compelled her to work as a maid and childcare provider under coercive conditions.

Presiding Judge Foxton described it as a “very sad case,” acknowledging Mugambe’s prior reputation and accomplishments in the field of human rights.

However, he condemned her lack of remorse, noting that she attempted to blame the victim entirely.

“She showed absolutely no remorse,” Foxton said, and added that Mugambe’s actions were a “most egregious” abuse of power.

As part of the sentence, a restraining order was issued prohibiting Mugambe from contacting the victim, directly or indirectly.

In a statement read by prosecutor Caroline Haughey KC, the victim spoke of enduring “almost constant fear” due to Mugambe’s influential position in Uganda.

The young woman, whose identity remains protected, expressed fear of returning to Uganda, stating she may never see her mother again.

Haughey explained that Mugambe had manipulated the victim’s lack of knowledge of UK labor laws and misled her about the reasons for her travel to Britain.

The court also heard that the woman has now been granted asylum in the UK, having demonstrated a well-founded fear of persecution.

Defence counsel Paul Raudnitz KC appealed to the court to consider Mugambe’s “glittering legal career” and noted the support she had received since her conviction.

He confirmed that Mugambe had resigned from her UN judicial position following the verdict.

Before sentencing, a small group of supporters gathered outside the court holding signs and chanting “Justice for Lydia Mugambe.”

Mugambe had been appointed to the United Nations judicial roster in May 2023, three months after police first intervened at her residence in Oxfordshire.

INEC Under Pressure Not To Register TNN As Political Party

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is reportedly facing mounting pressure not to register Team New Nigeria (TNN) as a political party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Despite fixing February 21, 2026, for elections into the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory, the commission has yet to announce a date for the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).

TNN, in a statement issued in Kaduna yesterday by its spokesperson, Dr. Mohammed Shaibu, claimed that high-level political interests are trying to block its registration due to the party’s rising popularity across Nigeria.

He noted that the association had applied for registration since 2024.

According to Shaibu, “The application for registration has been submitted to INEC and was acknowledged since May 27, 2024.”

However, he expressed disappointment that INEC has not made further progress.

“INEC only wrote an acknowledgment letter promising to notify us when the registration portal would be opened for submission of application and documentation,” he said.

He added: “All efforts made to remind the INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, of the intendment of the Constitution and the Electoral Act, has proven abortive.”

“Despite the passage of the 90 days threshold, the period within which the Commission’s Guidelines mandatorily required him to respond to such letter of intent.”

Shaibu further questioned the delay: “For how long should we wait to get registered? Our presence is all over the country and we have limited time to deliver our manifestos to the electorate.”

He also stated that the INEC Chairman is allegedly resisting pressure from “high quarters” not to approve TNN’s registration.

“There is no doubt that INEC is under tremendous pressure, from both the card-carrying All Progressives Congress (APC) members in its employ and their collaborators who are mortally afraid of the TNN, and who will want the electoral body to commence, right now, the process of rigging the 2027 election in their favour.”

He appealed to INEC to uphold its neutrality and respect the law.

“But we urge INEC not to compromise its neutrality and integrity by acting contrary to the law.”

“We remind the commission that Nigerians are keenly watching how it will handle this TNN issue, and whatever it does will determine whether or not Nigerians can count on it to organise a credible election in 2027,” the statement concluded.

In the meantime, TNN has called on its supporters nationwide to remain calm and patient as the matter unfolds.

Meanwhile, in response to a viral social media message claiming that the CVR, including the transfer and replacement of lost Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs), would resume on May 27, 2025, INEC dismissed the claim as false.

Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, clarified yesterday: “In line with its tradition, the commission will publicly announce the date for the resumption of the CVR at the appropriate time, the full details of which will also be shared via our official social media platforms.”

Israel Vows Retaliation Against Yemen’s Huthi Rebels After Missile Strike On Airport

Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu has promised strong retaliation against Yemen’s Huthi rebels and their Iranian allies following a rare missile strike that hit the vicinity of Ben Gurion Airport, injuring six and temporarily halting air travel.

The missile, launched from Yemen, struck near Terminal 3 of Israel’s main international airport on Sunday morning, just hours before Israel’s military announced the mobilization of “tens of thousands” of reservists to intensify its ongoing war in Gaza against Hamas.

An Israeli military spokesperson confirmed to AFP that it was “the first time” a missile had directly impacted inside the airport perimeter.

A police video showed a large crater near the control tower, though no airport infrastructure was damaged.

Netanyahu, in a video message posted on Telegram, declared, “It will not happen in one bang, but there will be many bangs,” and assured that Israel had acted against the Huthis before and “will act in the future.”

He later posted on X, saying Israel would also respond to Iran “at a time and place of our choosing.”

The strike caused panic among travelers.

An AFP journalist at the scene described hearing a “loud bang” at around 9:35 am, adding that the “reverberation was very strong.” Passengers were quickly directed to shelters, including bunkers.

Magen David Adom emergency services confirmed at least six people sustained light to moderate injuries.

One witness said, “It is crazy to say but since October 7 we are used to this,” referencing the Hamas attacks that sparked the current Gaza conflict.

Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, issued a stern warning: “Anyone who hits us, we will hit them seven times stronger.”

The Huthis claimed responsibility, stating they used a “hypersonic ballistic missile” to target the airport.

The group, which controls much of Yemen, has previously launched drones and missiles at Israeli and Red Sea targets, claiming solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

Israel’s Air Force attributed the failure to intercept the missile to a “technical issue” in the interceptor’s targeting mechanism rather than its detection systems.

The attack prompted flight suspensions from several airlines, including Air France, ITA Airways, and Lufthansa Group carriers.

An incoming Air India flight was diverted to Abu Dhabi.

Despite the chaos, flights resumed later on Sunday with Israeli aviation authorities confirming that Ben Gurion Airport was “open and operational.”

Central Israel’s police chief Yair Hezroni emphasized the impact, saying, “You can see the area just behind us: a crater was formed here, several dozen metres wide and several dozen metres deep.”

In response, Israel’s security cabinet convened for emergency deliberations.

Military Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir later confirmed plans to escalate operations in Gaza

“This week we are issuing tens of thousands of orders to our reservists to intensify and expand our operation in Gaza.”

He added, the army would target Hamas infrastructure “both on the surface and underground.”
