US State Of Georgia Confers Honorary Citizenship On Nnamdi Kanu

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been awarded honorary citizenship by the State of Georgia in the United States.

Kanu, who is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Correctional Facility following his conviction on terrorism-related charges by the Nigerian government, was honoured through an official proclamation issued by the Georgia Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger.

The proclamation, dated January 16, 2026, declared Kanu an “Honorary Georgia Citizen” and also recognised him as a Goodwill Ambassador of the state.

The document was formally received on Kanu’s behalf by a former Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa, Uche Ajulu, during a presentation in Georgia on Friday.

The proclamation states, “I, Brad Raffensperger, Secretary of State of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim Nnamdi Okwu Kanu as an Honorary Georgia Citizen.

“May this Outstanding Citizen be accorded every courtesy as a Goodwill Ambassador from Georgia in his travels to other states, to nations beyond the borders of the United States of America, or wherever he may hereafter travel or reside. Thank you for your service to our state.

“In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of my office, at the State Capitol, in the City of Atlanta, this 16th day of January, A.D. 2026.”

‘Obi Or Nothing’ Campaign Could Threaten Our Chances In 2027 – ADC Warns

The African Democratic Congress has warned that rigid loyalty to individual presidential aspirants, particularly the “Obi or nothing” stance, could weaken the party’s chances in the 2027 general election.

Speaking during the ADC Coalition Hours held virtually on Saturday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bola Abdullahi, cautioned supporters against divisive campaigning, urging them to rally behind the party rather than any single aspirant.

Abdullahi said such inflexible attitudes risk undermining unity within the opposition coalition that adopted the ADC as its platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Since emerging as the coalition vehicle in July 2025, the party has been working to strengthen its national structures under the leadership of former Senate President David Mark as National Chairman and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary.

Several high-profile politicians have since declared interest in the ADC presidential ticket, including former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi.

More aspirants are also expected to join the race in the coming weeks.

The growing field has triggered debates among supporters over zoning and ticket allocation, with some Obi supporters advocating a southern ticket, while others aligned with Atiku have pushed for an open contest.

Abdullahi disclosed that he had engaged key coalition figures, including Atiku, Obi, Amaechi and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, to stress the need for unity and collective focus.

According to him, all party leaders agree that winning the election should take priority over individual ambitions.

He also addressed concerns about the timing of the 2027 election, noting that while early elections might benefit the opposition due to public dissatisfaction with the current administration, the party would prefer more time to heal divisions that could arise from its primaries.

Abdullahi warned that supporters promoting a “must-be-my-candidate” mindset were inadvertently working in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

He said securing the party’s ticket alone was meaningless without broad-based support across regions, adding that divisive rhetoric could alienate potential allies and voters.

The ADC spokesperson assured that the party would intensify efforts to promote cohesion and ensure its leaders speak with one voice ahead of the elections.

He stressed that all aspirants were qualified and that attacking individuals or regions would only weaken the party’s prospects, insisting that unity remained the key to electoral victory in 2027.

Nigerian Nurse Stripped Of Licence In Australia Over Sleeping On Duty

A Nigerian-born nurse, Chimzuruoke Okembunachi, has lost her nursing licence in Australia after a tribunal found that she repeatedly slept during night shifts at an aged care facility, exposing elderly residents to serious risk.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, the New South Wales Civil and Administrative Tribunal on January 20 ruled that Okembunachi’s conduct amounted to professional misconduct, leading to the cancellation of her nursing registration.

The 25-year-old began working at Hardi Aged Care in Guildford, western Sydney, in February 2024 but was suspended and later resigned barely a month into the role.

Tribunal findings revealed that between March 13 and 27, Okembunachi was the only registered nurse on duty during night shifts, overseeing between three and four assistants-in-nursing and approximately 100 residents.

On six separate nights, she failed to carry out her responsibilities after falling asleep while on duty.

As a result, three patients reportedly missed prescribed doses of morphine.

On one occasion, an assistant-in-nursing turned on the nurses’ station light to wake her, but she allegedly switched it off shortly after and returned to sleep.

The tribunal also heard that on March 15, she instructed an assistant to administer Panadol to a patient, despite the assistant lacking authorisation to do so.

Her conduct was reported by two nurses on March 27.

The following day, she received an email notifying her of her suspension and inviting her to a meeting.

However, she resigned shortly afterwards and declined to attend the meeting.

Born in Nigeria, Okembunachi relocated to Australia in 2018.

She earned a Bachelor of Nursing Science in 2021 and was studying medicine at Western Sydney University while working at the aged care facility.

During the proceedings, she admitted her failings, stating that working night shifts during the week compromised patient safety and that she should not have accepted the role.

While the tribunal acknowledged her remorse, it ruled that deregistration was necessary, noting that her actions had the potential to endanger patients’ lives.

She will be barred from reapplying for registration for at least nine months.

Although she has not returned to nursing, she continues her medical studies with support from her family and a Centrelink student allowance.

Brother Demands Justice As Man Allegedly Kills Fiancée Days To Wedding In Anambra

The family of 35-year-old Ogechukwu has demanded justice following her alleged murder by her fiancé, just days before their planned traditional wedding in Anambra State.

Speaking with DAILY GAZETTE, her elder brother, Chinonso Mmadubugwu, said the incident has left the family traumatised and struggling to understand how a man they trusted could allegedly take her life.

According to him, Ogechukwu had gone out on the evening of December 8, 2025, after her fiancé, identified as Chibuike Valentine Anaikpe, complained of severe illness.

She reportedly told her mother she was going to assist him and possibly take him to the hospital the following morning.

By the next day, efforts to reach Ogechukwu and her fiancé proved unsuccessful.

Concerned family members checked the man’s residence, where they later found Ogechukwu’s lifeless body on the bed.

Her phone and one of the suspect’s phones were recovered at the scene, along with a handwritten note allegedly left behind by the suspect.

The brother said the family immediately alerted the police, who confirmed her death at a general hospital before depositing her body in a mortuary.

He disclosed that the suspect fled after the incident but was later arrested in Ughelli, Delta State, and transferred to the Anambra State Criminal Investigation Department.

According to him, the suspect has confessed to the killing, though the motive remains unclear.

“There is every tendency that she was drugged before she was murdered,” he said, adding that a post-mortem examination had been conducted, with laboratory results expected from Lagos to determine further details.

The family described Ogechukwu as a compassionate woman who went out of love to care for someone she trusted, only to be betrayed.

“The person she wanted to save is the same person who murdered her,” her brother lamented.

He noted that wedding preparations were already underway, with both families informed and traditional attire already purchased ahead of the ceremony scheduled for December or January.

Ogechukwu has since been buried, leaving behind a four-year-old daughter. Her family says they are relying on the justice system to ensure accountability.

“I cannot defend a murderer,” her brother said.

“Let the law take its course. All we want is the truth and justice for my sister.”

Schools To Open Mondays As Anambra Govt Cracks Down On Sit-At-Home Defaulters

The Anambra State Government has issued an Executive Order abolishing the practice of closing schools on Mondays over sit-at-home directives.

Staff who fail to comply risk losing 20 per cent of their salary or, in extreme cases, the full salary for the day.

The directive was communicated in a letter dated January 22, 2026, signed by Loveline Mgbemena, Board Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Board.

The letter instructs all permanent board members, local government officers, zonal directors, and departmental heads to ensure the order is communicated and adhered to by all staff.

The decision follows the state Executive Council retreat held on January 21, 2026, presided over by Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.

The letter, titled “Executive Order on Termination of Monday Sit-At-Home in Anambra State,” states:

“Sequel to the state exco retreat held on January 21, 2026 presided by the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, I am directed to inform you that the state government has directed and also decided that the protracted Monday sit-at-home in Anambra State has been abolished with immediate effect.

“By this directive, any staff, both tutorial and non-tutorial, that fails to attend school or office on Monday will either receive 20 per cent of his/her salary or forfeit it entirely.”

“You are to bring the content of this letter to the notice of all staff under you and ensure adequate compliance. Please be properly guided as the above is the executive decision of the state government.”

The sit-at-home policy was originally declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on August 9, 2021, demanding the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The directive instructed schools, markets, and motor parks to remain closed on Mondays.

While IPOB leadership has formally abolished the policy, many residents continued to observe it due to fear of attacks.

NBA Disowns Appointment Of Pension Thief Maina As Garki Branch Patron, Orders Disciplinary Action

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has officially dissociated itself from the appointment of convicted pension fraudster Abdulrasheed Maina as Patron of its Garki branch in Abuja, calling the action “reprehensible” and a “mockery of the legal profession and the fight against corruption.”

According to a statement issued by NBA President Mazi Osigwe on Friday, disciplinary proceedings will commence against the Garki Branch Chairman, Anthony Ojo, who authorised Maina’s appointment.

“The purported appointment not only paints the legal profession and the NBA in a bad light but also makes a mockery of the government’s fight against corruption, as well as the association’s motto of promoting the rule of law,” Mr Osigwe said.

“The Bar fails in her duties to the society and the cause of justice when it condones, encourages, and or fails to take definite actions to eliminate corruption and corrupt practices.”

At the event, Mr Maina called for an intensified investigation into former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

“What the government has seen so far may only be a fraction. My speciality is the recovery of public funds. We can recover more. There must be accountability, transparency, and the rule of law. Malami should be properly prosecuted and investigated again because he has not been properly investigated,” Mr Maina said.

He claimed that powerful persons in the former administration orchestrated his corruption saga and denied wrongdoing, insisting that Mr Malami and other top forces in the Buhari administration were after him.

Mr Maina, a former chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, was appointed in 2010 by the Goodluck Jonathan administration to reform the pension system and eliminate ghost workers.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) later charged him in FHC/ABJ/CR/256/2019 with using fictitious names and accounts to siphon pension funds through relatives and accomplices.

Three of his siblings testified against him in court, revealing how Mr Maina fraudulently used their information to open accounts for his company, Common Input Property and Investment Ltd. Nigerian banks, including UBA and Fidelity Bank Plc, were reported to have acted as conduits for the stolen funds.

After fleeing Nigeria in 2013, he was arrested and extradited in 2019.

In November 2021, Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court sentenced him to eight years’ imprisonment for laundering N2 billion in pension funds.

“The facts of this case are sordid, immoral, and morbid. The facts portray the moral decadence in Nigeria,” Justice Abang noted.

The Court of Appeal later affirmed the conviction and handed a 14-year jail term to Mr Maina’s son, Faisal, for related offences.
Recent Release from Prison

Though the exact date is unclear, Mr Maina quietly completed his prison term in February 2025.

Thursday’s NBA event marked one of his first public appearances since his release.

Recounting his time as a fugitive, he claimed, “I was flown out of the country on a government aircraft for medical care, but officials turned around and arrested me in the Niger Republic for jumping bail.”

The NBA has ordered Mr Ojo to immediately withdraw Maina’s appointment and stop issuing statements on his behalf or on pending court cases.

“While the NBA respects Mr Maina’s right to exhaust his right to appeal against the conviction, the Bar will not under any guise comment on such an appeal or be seen to try to sway public opinion in his favour,” the statement said.

Mr Osigwe added, “The association would not lend its platform, name, or institutional credibility to influence public opinion or judicial proceedings in respect of cases that are sub judice or take steps that may be perceived as laundering the image of any person convicted of criminal offences.”

He described such acts as “a grave violation of professional ethics and a direct affront to the rule of law.”

The NBA president stressed that integrity, accountability, respect for the judicial process, and public confidence in the legal profession are foundational values.

He warned that any conduct undermining these principles would attract decisive institutional response.

“The NBA views this conduct as a serious breach of professional responsibility and institutional discipline. Accordingly, disciplinary proceedings will be commenced against the Chairman of the NBA Garki Branch for actions inconsistent with the Constitution of the NBA, the Rules of Professional Conduct, and the core values of the legal profession.”

Kwankwaso Says He’s ‘Not For Sale’, Rallies Supporters After Gov Yusuf’s Exit From NNPP

Kwankwaso Says He’s ‘Not For sale’, Rallies Supporters After Governor Yusuf Left NNPP
Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, national leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, has dismissed speculation that he could abandon his political ideology following the resignation of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the New Nigeria Peoples Party.

Speaking to supporters at his residence in Kano, Kwankwaso declared that he was “not for sale,” insisting that his political engagement was driven by principles and commitment to the welfare of ordinary Nigerians rather than personal gain.

He cautioned party members, particularly youths, against the lure of money politics, urging them to remain steadfast in defending the ideals of the Kwankwasiyya Movement despite recent defections.

Governor Yusuf’s exit from the NNPP has sparked a wave of resignations within the party’s state structure, with reports indicating that several aides, local government chairmen, and lawmakers have followed suit.

In response to the unfolding developments, Kwankwaso held meetings with Kwankwasiyya groups across the state to reassure loyalists and outline strategies aimed at preserving the party’s grassroots base.

The NNPP leadership has condemned Yusuf’s resignation, describing it as a betrayal of the mandate freely given by Kano voters and the longstanding loyalty of the party’s supporters.

The party also rejected claims that internal crises necessitated the governor’s decision, arguing that such narratives were unfounded.

Kwankwaso used the occasion to call for early mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing the need to consolidate party structures, strengthen internal cohesion, and prepare effectively for future political contests.

Greenland, Denmark Set Aside Troubled History To Face Down Trump

Greenland and Denmark have temporarily set aside decades of unresolved historical grievances to present a united front against renewed pressure from United States President Donald Trump over the strategic Arctic territory.

The vast island, ruled by Denmark as an autonomous territory but home to strong pro-independence sentiments, has found common cause with Copenhagen amid Washington’s renewed interest in its strategic and security significance.

Greenland’s major political parties, which all support independence in principle but differ on the pace and method, formed a coalition government in March 2025 largely in response to Trump’s repeated expressions of interest in taking control of the island.

Only the Naleraq party, which advocates a rapid path to independence, remained outside the coalition.

Last week, Greenland’s leaders firmly rejected Trump’s bid, reiterating that the island was not for sale.

Although Trump later said he had reached a framework agreement on Arctic security with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Greenland and Denmark stressed that decisions concerning the territory rest solely with them.

At the height of the diplomatic standoff, Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, declared that if forced to choose between the United States and Denmark, Greenland would stand with Denmark.

According to Ulrik Pram Gad of the Danish Institute for International Studies, Trump’s pressure has pushed most of Greenland’s political spectrum to shelve immediate independence preparations in favour of collective resistance.

He said broader European backing had eased long-standing tensions with Denmark, making the relationship feel less restrictive in the face of external pressure.

Over the past month, Greenland and Denmark have coordinated diplomatic engagements, appearing jointly in Washington and Brussels to reinforce their shared position.

Greenland’s Foreign Minister, Vivian Motzfeldt, and Denmark’s Foreign Minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, met senior US officials in Washington before holding further talks with NATO leaders in Brussels.

Despite the current unity, analysts note that the relationship is shaped by a painful colonial legacy.

Greenland was a Danish colony for more than three centuries before becoming an autonomous territory in 1979, with expanded self-rule granted in 2009.

Historians and researchers point to a series of injustices, including forced assimilation policies, the removal of Inuit children from their families in the 1950s, and decades-long birth control programmes that saw thousands of Greenlandic women fitted with contraceptive devices without consent.

Denmark has formally apologised for some of these actions and begun compensation processes, but the scars remain.

Experts say the renewed focus on Greenland’s strategic value has, for now, pushed these unresolved issues into the background.

“There is a broad sense that the immediate challenge is external,” said Astrid Andersen, a specialist in Danish-Greenlandic relations.

“For the moment, the common opponent is Trump, and that has created a fragile but significant unity.”

Impeachment: Take Over Rivers Assembly, APC Leaders Urge National Assembly

Leaders of the All Progressives Congress have called on the National Assembly to assume the legislative functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly, citing what they described as a worsening constitutional crisis in the state.

The call followed renewed attempts by the Rivers Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, which APC leaders said were politically motivated and amounted to an abuse of legislative powers.

The crisis deepened last Friday when the Assembly wrote to the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi, requesting the constitution of a seven-member panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against the governor and his deputy.

However, the Chief Judge declined the request on Thursday, citing subsisting court orders restraining him from taking further action.

Despite the development, the Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, maintained that the impeachment process should continue, describing it as the only path to resolving the political impasse in the state.

Reacting, the APC Leaders Forum said the House had lost public trust and credibility, accusing it of repeatedly abusing its constitutional mandate.

In a statement jointly signed by the forum’s National Leader, Ibrahim Danjuma, National Secretary, Akpan Ekpeyong, alongside civil society leaders Ifeanyi Okorie, Maryann Douglas, and Collins Akpofure, the group warned that democracy in Rivers State was under serious threat.

The forum described the allegations against Governor Fubara as unsubstantiated, insisting that the impeachment move lacked both legal and factual basis.

It urged the national leadership of the APC and the National Assembly to intervene to safeguard democratic governance in the state.

The group also accused 27 lawmakers allegedly loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike of diverting state resources for personal and political interests.

It further called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene decisively, arguing that extraordinary measures were necessary to prevent a breakdown of constitutional order.

Meanwhile, the High Court of the Oyigbo Division in Port Harcourt adjourned indefinitely the suit filed by Governor Fubara and his deputy challenging the impeachment process.

The presiding judge, Justice Fiberesima, adjourned the matter sine die following confirmation that two separate appeals had been filed before the Court of Appeal.

In a related development, the Rivers State chapter of the APC, led by Chief Emeka Beke, commended the presidency for recognising Governor Fubara as the leader of the party in the state.

The party’s Publicity Secretary, Dalington Nwauju, said President Tinubu’s position aligned with the party’s national convention, which recognises sitting governors as state party leaders.

The Rivers APC also called on Governor Fubara to convene an urgent stakeholders’ meeting to address lingering internal divisions.

The party reiterated its demand for the resignation of the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, over comments on the impeachment process and urged the National Working Committee to conduct fresh congresses at ward, local government, and state levels.

The APC in Rivers State is currently divided into two factions, led by Emeka Beke and Tony Okocha, respectively.

FG Orders Free Meter Installation Nationwide, Warns DisCos Against Extortion

The Federal Government has banned electricity distribution companies and their agents from charging consumers for meter installation, warning that any official or installer found demanding payment will face prosecution.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, issued the directive on Thursday during an inspection of newly imported smart meters at APM Terminals, Apapa, Lagos.

He said the meters, procured under the World Bank–funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme, must be distributed and installed at no cost to electricity consumers.

Adelabu described the collection of money for meter installation as illegal, stressing that neither DisCo officials nor third-party installers were permitted to request payment from customers under any guise.

According to the minister, the Federal Government has imported about 500,000 smart meters in the latest batch, adding to nearly one million meters already received out of the 1.43 million units earmarked for the first phase of the programme.

He said close to 150,000 meters had already been installed nationwide.

He explained that the DISREP initiative would deliver about 3.4 million meters in two phases, noting that the goal was to close Nigeria’s metering gap and improve transparency, billing accuracy, and revenue collection in the power sector.

Adelabu expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of metering but said the government was determined to ensure that every household, business, and institution was fully metered within the next few years.

He warned that any form of extortion during meter installation would attract sanctions, adding that the government would actively monitor the process.

He said regulatory agencies, including the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and state electricity regulators, would receive and act on complaints from consumers.

The minister also disclosed plans to establish customer complaint desks and a register for unmetered customers to accelerate deployment, noting that clean and reliable customer data was essential to the success of the programme.

He emphasised that the meters would be distributed to all categories of electricity consumers, regardless of service band, describing the current banding system as temporary.

On concerns about enforcement, the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises, Ayo Gbeleyi, said the bureau was coordinating the implementation of the programme and monitoring compliance by all 11 electricity distribution companies.

Gbeleyi said the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission would soon issue fresh guidelines to ensure unhindered access for meter installations, adding that the meters were configured specifically for each DisCo and fitted with anti-theft technology.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Mojec, Mojisola Abdul, urged consumers not to pay any money for meters, insisting that installations under the programme were genuinely free.

She disclosed that about 150,000 meters had already been installed and announced plans for mobile registration to fast-track deployment.

Adelabu acknowledged public scepticism arising from past experiences but assured Nigerians that the current programme differed from previous initiatives, citing sufficient meter availability and the elimination of payment requirements.

He added that the Tinubu administration was addressing a long-standing liquidity challenge in the power sector and vowed that offenders involved in extortion would be prosecuted and publicly named as a deterrent.

Nigeria currently has over five million electricity customers under estimated billing.
