SDP Disowns Alliance For Transformation Mandate, Labels Group As Unauthorized

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has distanced itself from the group known as the Alliance for Transformation Mandate (ATM), declaring that the group does not represent the party and is not recognized by its national leadership.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, condemned the group’s recent “World Press Conference,” where ATM members referred to themselves as “footsoldiers” of the SDP.

“The attention of the national leadership of our great party, the SDP, has been drawn to a ‘World Press Conference’ by a group named Alliance for Transformation Mandate (ATM), which described its members as ‘footsoldiers’ for the Social Democratic Party,” Aiyenigba said in the statement.

He clarified that the group is “obviously sponsored” and “assembled to serve the personal interests of its backers.”

The SDP, Aiyenigba stressed, does not recognize the group, and any statements made by ATM should be regarded as “null and void.”

Aiyenigba also reminded the public that only the National Chairman and National Publicity Secretary are authorized to represent the SDP in official matters.

He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to democratic values, discipline, and structure, highlighting its strong support for its 2023 presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo.

“The national leadership and the generality of SDP members recognize Prince Adewole Adebayo as the best candidate in the last presidential election.”

“He has excellently represented the ideology of the party during and after the 2023 elections. There is no conflict between the party and Prince Adebayo. In fact, we express a vote of confidence in his capacity and leadership,” Aiyenigba stated.

Concluding the statement, Aiyenigba urged the public to disregard any claims made by ATM, describing the group as “fictitious and unauthorized.”

“The national leadership emphatically declares the ‘ATM’ as an unknown group to the party and urges Nigerians to be rightly guided,” Aiyenigba added.

AI Video: Action Collective Raises Alarm Over Smear Campaign Against Senator Natasha

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has become the latest target of an alleged smear campaign involving artificial intelligence-generated content, according to a public alert issued by the Action Collective.

In a statement released on Friday and signed by its National Coordinator, Mr. Teddy Onyejuwe, the group raised the alarm over a circulating video that it claims falsely depicts the senator.

The organization emphasized that the video is fabricated and should not be trusted, urging the public to seek information only from verified and official sources.

“We call on Nigerians to remain vigilant and not to fall for deceptive content designed to damage reputations,” the statement read.

Mr. Onyejuwe described the campaign as politically orchestrated and intended to mislead citizens by leveraging digital manipulation technologies.

He noted that such tactics are designed to erode public trust and tarnish the image of respected individuals.

The Action Collective further condemned those allegedly behind the disinformation efforts and warned against the manipulation of digital spaces for political gain.

It encouraged the public to scrutinize the origins and authenticity of digital content before believing or sharing it.

Referencing earlier reports and online discourse, the group drew attention to concerns about the exploitation of NGOs and digital platforms in spreading misleading narratives.

Still, it called for fairness and responsibility in the handling of such sensitive matters.

The group also appealed to the media, regulators, and civil society groups to step up efforts in combating digital misinformation, especially those produced using artificial intelligence.

“This is a coordinated attempt by some political interests to undermine a respected public servant. We urge Nigerians to verify their sources and remain cautious of misinformation that could negatively impact lives and reputations,” Onyejuwe concluded.

40 Lawmakers, Two Governors Set To Leave PDP

The Nigeria Lawmakers Opposition Coalition has raised alarm over the state of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), revealing that 40 legislators and two sitting governors are set to defect due to what they describe as a deepening crisis and loss of direction within the party.

Speaking during a press briefing in his hometown of Akokwa on Friday, the coalition’s spokesperson, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, condemned the current leadership of the PDP, suggesting that its founding fathers would be disheartened by the party’s present trajectory.

“For two years, the leaders of this party have failed to find a solution to its internal crisis because they are actively undermining the very platform that made them,” Ugochinyere declared.

He demanded the immediate removal of the Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum; PDP’s 2023 Imo State governorship candidate, Senator Samuel Anyanwu; and the expulsion of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

He further called for a substantive chairman to be appointed from the North Central zone, insisting that such a move is critical to salvaging the party.

Turning to Damagum’s remarks that relied on divine guidance in party matters, Ugochinyere criticized what he called selective spiritual rhetoric.

“Where was God when you allowed the North Central to be sidelined in appointing an acting chairman? Where was God when you supported APC defectors in court? Or when party structures were handed to APC members? And yet you speak of faith in God?” he queried.

Ugochinyere also lashed out at Wike’s continued presence in the PDP despite his alliance with the ruling APC, questioning why the party leadership tolerates his ongoing activities.

Beyond party politics, the lawmaker used the occasion to draw national attention to the escalating erosion problems plaguing his Ideato constituency in Imo State.

While expressing appreciation for ongoing efforts, he also highlighted critical areas in need of urgent government intervention.

“I thank the federal and state governments for their commitment, but in other parts of my constituency, especially the Umuechi-Urualla axis, the erosion is out of control.”

“It’s threatening St. Jude’s Catholic Church, the king’s palace, and federal infrastructure. The situation is dire,” Ugochinyere cautioned.

He lamented the failure of a previous World Bank-funded erosion project valued at N9 billion, blaming the previous state administration for mismanaging the funds and leaving the work incomplete.

Appealing to relevant authorities, he said, “Please intervene and save our people from being cut off by this devastating erosion menace.”

2025 UTME: JAMB Arrests 27 Impersonators, Delists 4 CBT Centres

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has confirmed the arrest of 27 impersonators during the ongoing 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), handing them over to the Nigeria Police for immediate prosecution.

In a statement released Friday night by JAMB’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, the board also announced the delisting of four Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres for failing to meet the “stringent technical standards” required for conducting the UTME.

The affected centres are:

  • Adventure Associate, Behind Sheshe Supermarket, Off Hadejia Road, Kano, Kano State
  • Saadatu Rimi College of Education, Zaria Road, Naibawa, Kano, Kano State
  • Penta M & F Technical Services Ltd, Centre 2, 96km Sokoto-Jega Road, Tambuwal
  • Penta M & F Technical Services Ltd, Centre 1, 96km Sokoto-Jega Road, Tambuwal

“While JAMB commends the 883 centres that have demonstrated exceptional performance, it unequivocally warns that any centre which failed the ethical or technical standards, regardless of ownership, will be blacklisted,” the board said.

The statement further advised candidates affected by the delisting of centres to immediately reprint their examination notification slips to obtain updated information about their new venues and exam schedules.

“Candidates who were previously scheduled to take their exams at the delisted centres are urged to urgently reprint their examination notification slips to access their new centres and rescheduled dates.”

“We regret any inconvenience this may cause, but we will not tolerate excuses by candidates who fail to reprint their slip to get their new schedules,” it emphasized.

As of April 25, 2025, JAMB disclosed that over 900,000 candidates out of the 2,083,600 registered have successfully completed the UTME.

In a related development, the board addressed concerns over alleged discrimination against hijab-wearing candidates at Caleb University CBT centre.

“JAMB said it has been alerted to the unauthorized restrictions imposed on candidates wearing hijabs in its Caleb University Centre, and swift action has been taken to address this unilateral decision, which has been categorically condemned by the Vice-Chancellor of the university.”

“This misguided action was the result of an overzealous security officer. We extend our sincere apologies to the affected candidates and commend the leadership of both the centre and the university for their prompt intervention, which ensured that no candidate suffered undue disadvantage,” JAMB concluded.

Former Enugu Labour Party Candidate Dumps Party After Edeoga’s Departure, Moves Structure To PDP

Labour Party House of Assembly candidate for Igboetiti East Constituency in the 2023 general elections in Enugu State, Hon. Johncross Enyivigbo, has officially announced his resignation from the Labour Party and subsequent defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Addressing teeming supporters and PDP leaders at his Ukehe Ward 2 in Igboetiti on Friday, Enyivigbo cited the recent departure of the Labour Party’s governorship candidate, Hon. Chijioke Edeoga, as a key factor influencing his decision.

According to him, internal wrangling and a perceived lack of direction within the Labour Party following Edeoga’s exit had left many loyal members disillusioned.

“After deep reflection and consultations with my political base, I have decided to move to the PDP, a party with a clearer structure, tested leadership, and a more realistic approach to governance in Enugu State,” Enyivigbo declared.

He also confirmed that his political structure in Igboetiti West, including coordinators and grassroots mobilizers, have joined him in the move.

“Politics is about people and progress. Our people deserve representation anchored on experience, stability, and proven development frameworks. The PDP provides that platform,” he added.

While expressing gratitude to the Labour Party for the opportunity to serve as its candidate, Enyivigbo stated that the journey forward requires alignment with a party that resonates more with his political ideals and aspirations for his constituency.

Welcoming him to the party, the former Labour Party governorship candidate in Enugu State, Barr. Chijioke Edeoga, described Enyivigbo’s move as a commendable step, noting that the PDP under Governor Peter Mbah is well-positioned to deliver good governance in the state.

Also speaking, the PDP chairman in Igboetiti Local Government Area described Enyivigbo’s return as a “homecoming,” emphasizing that the party remains open to all progressive-minded individuals willing to contribute to the development of Enugu State.

In attendance at the event were the Ward Chairman of PDP in Ukehe Ward 2, the Igboetiti Local Government PDP Chairman, the State Organizing Secretary of the PDP, the Zonal Chairman of the party, and representatives of the Council Chairman, among other party faithful.

SDP Aspirant Urges Abuja Workers To Vote Out Council Chairmen Opposed To N70,000 Minimum Wage

Obinna Simon, the comedian-turned-politician popularly known as MC Tagwaye, has called on teachers and workers in Abuja’s Area Councils to hold their chairmen accountable by voting against those who fail to implement the N70,000 minimum wage.

This call comes in response to Thursday’s protest in Abuja, where workers and teachers took to the streets over unpaid entitlements.

DAILY GAZETTE reports that the demonstrators expressed deep frustration over the economic pressures they face amidst stagnant wages.

Addressing the situation in a statement on Friday, Simon emphasized the harsh realities workers endure under current inflationary trends.

“The current economic hardship, coupled with high inflation rates, makes it impossible for workers earning less than N70,000 to survive,” he said.

Drawing from personal experience, Simon noted that he had spent eight years teaching in Nigerian schools, giving him insight into the everyday struggles of educators, particularly in public institutions.

“A hungry teacher can’t impact knowledge on our children and students,” he stated.

“How can we expect our educators to deliver quality education when they’re struggling to put food on the table? It’s unacceptable that some teachers in the FCT earn less than N40,000 per month. We must prioritise the welfare of our teachers and workers.”

Simon expressed strong solidarity with the protesting workers and emphasized the urgent need for leadership that puts citizens’ welfare first.

“We must stand with our teachers and workers who are struggling to make ends meet,” he declared.

“It’s time for us to demand better from our leaders and use our voter cards to effect the change we desire.”

“Let’s elect leaders who will prioritise the welfare of our educators and workers, and ensure they receive a living wage that reflects the current economic reality.”

Benue In Grief As Fresh Attack Claims 7 Lives, 3 Kidnapped

A fresh wave of violence swept through Benue State on Thursday night, leaving seven people dead and three others abducted in Agbo Vengav Udam, a community in Gwer West Local Government Area.

According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers stormed the area around 7pm, opening fire indiscriminately and sparking chaos among residents.

One source said the assailants approached through a border village in Otukpo before launching their assault on Agbo.

“They came through a border village in Otukpo and entered Agbo while shooting sporadically. Seven people were killed instantly, and they abducted three others,” a local resident told Daily Trust.

Tragically, one of the victims was a baby, while the child’s mother was among those kidnapped, another witness disclosed.

Five bodies were deposited at the morgue in Naka, while the remaining two victims were laid to rest by their families immediately.

The unrelenting attacks have left many residents fleeing the area out of fear of another strike.

However, efforts to reach Gwer West council chairman, Victor Ormin, were unsuccessful as calls and messages went unanswered.

Similar attempts to contact Benue Police spokesperson, CSP Catherine Anene, also yielded no response.

The Thursday night assault follows an earlier incident the same day in which unidentified gunmen hijacked two commercial vehicles and abducted 19 passengers within the same local government.

Data compiled from various attacks throughout April reveal a chilling death toll of at least 113 across seven local government areas in Benue.

However, locals believe the actual figure could be higher due to underreporting in remote communities.

The deadliest of these attacks occurred in the Sankera region, where 83 people were killed within five days across Katsina-Ala, Logo, and Ukum LGAs, starting from Thursday, April 17.

Other incidents included:

  • The April 15 attack in Otobi-Akpa, Otukpo LGA, which left 13 dead.
  • A separate incident on April 4 in which three were killed in a bus attack, bringing Otukpo’s total to 16.
  • On April 9, three people were killed in Mbasombo, Gwer East.
  • Gwer West suffered attacks on April 9 and April 24, with two and seven fatalities respectively.
  • Two people were also killed in Guma LGA on April 22.

Responding to the deteriorating security situation, Governor Hyacinth Alia reiterated the urgent need for federal intervention while hosting the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, in Makurdi.

“I used the occasion to speak the truth: Benue is under siege. Our communities are grieving. Our lands are soaked in tears.”

“Our farmers, the backbone of Nigeria’s food security, are being driven from their ancestral homes,” Governor Alia declared on his verified Facebook page.

“I once again appealed to the Federal Government for urgent and increased support to end this bloodshed. We cannot, and will not, normalise this evil,” he stated.

Governor Alia added that the President’s message, delivered by the NSA, was one of solidarity.

“The NSA delivered the President’s message: that Benue is not alone,” he wrote, adding, “the President and his entire cabinet were 100 percent with the state in this trying moment.”

He continued: “This is real evil… We will fight to ensure these murderers are defeated. Benue is number one in food production, and we must protect that legacy.”

Reflecting on the visit, the governor emphasized the need for decisive action: “The visit gave us hope, but more importantly, it demands action. And I will not rest until peace is restored to every inch of Benue soil. We will continue to defend our people, our land, and our right to live without fear.”

Boko Haram Regrouping In Lake Chad, Mandara Hills – Gov. Zulum Raises Alarm

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has raised fresh concerns over the regrouping of Boko Haram insurgents in the Tumbus region of Lake Chad and the Mandara hills within Sambisa forest.

Zulum voiced his concerns in Maiduguri on Friday during a courtesy visit by the Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar, alongside the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and other top military officials.

While commending the military for its ongoing efforts in the fight against insurgency in Borno and across the Northeast, Zulum admitted that recent developments suggest a resurgence of terrorist activity.

“What we are facing now is, we do military exercises/operations, after sometimes we disengage. The Boko Haram and ISWAP members will again come and take over those areas that were hitherto regained,” he said.

The governor drew attention to the unchecked activities of insurgents in the Tumbus waterways of Lake Chad, noting the absence of consistent military operations in those areas.

“There was never a time since the insurgency started that operations were conducted on the shores of the Tumbus in the lake Chad water. And, it has been a breeding ground for the insurgents. They can get money, livelihoods and everything in that water,” he said.

He stressed the importance of targeting the waterways, which serve as hubs for insurgents across different regions.

“So there is a need for us to see how military operations should be conducted in the waterway because all the terrorists that are operating in the northwest, North Central, northeast will return to the Sahel and Tumbus in the lake Chad for their livelihoods. This is something that needs to be done,” he added.

Zulum highlighted a lack of adequate manpower as a key challenge in securing areas such as the Timbuktu triangle, Tumbus, Mandara hills, and Nigeria’s porous borders with Sahelian nations.

“Manpower is very essential, while I was aware of the constraints of the Nigerian army, because right now you are everywhere in Nigeria. The Northeast, Northwest and North Central as well as southern Nigeria. I’m aware of your limitations,” he stated.

He differentiated between various groups operating in the region, saying, “But still considering the northeastern region, the Nigerian army should look into the possibility of sending more trained manpower.”

“There is a difference between Boko Haram ISWAP, and bandits. ISWAP and Boko Haram are terrorists getting support internationally, and looking at our porous borders remain infiltrated through the Sahel, which is our major problem.”

According to him, national security depends on securing the Sahel region.

“If the Sahel is not secured, Nigeria will never be secured. So there is a need for us to fortify the security situation in the Sahel with a view to ending the crisis in the entire nation. So we need manpower, and in terms of military operations, the operation should be a continuous exercise,” Zulum emphasized.

He called for enhanced military support, including tracked tanks and MRAPs.

“I believe these are some of the things that the MNJTF, the theater commander and military formations will request from you people,” he said.

Zulum also highlighted the need for stronger air force capacity.

“Then, in terms of the air force, we need air support. I know the kind of constraints you face accessing fighter helicopters and others, but attack helicopters are very important in these areas, and drones are also very important,” he said.

He cited a recent incident in Wulgo involving drone-assisted attacks by insurgents.

“The last attack that happened in Wulgo, carried out by ISWAP and Boko Haram, a confirmed statement said it was carried out with the support of armed drones. They hit the MNJTF with drones.”

In response, Zulum urged for new technologies to counter drone threats.

“This is the time for the Nigerian military to rise again and procure sophisticated drones and anti-drones equipment so that we get rid of these problems.”

He further advised a dual approach to combat the insurgency.

“While you are working towards kinetic measures, you should consider the non kinetic approach, which is very important. Borno State has within the last three years received more 300,000 repentant Boko Haram, and not all of them are fighters. Some of them are farmers,” he added.

Zulum expressed confidence that security in the state would improve and pledged his continued support.

“I also want to use this opportunity to commend the federal government of Nigeria, and the service chiefs for all the support they are rendering to the good people of Borno State.”

“Let me use this opportunity to commend the theatre commander as well as his GOC 7div and sector 3 for their continued support to ending the insurgency,” he concluded.

In his remarks, Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar assured that the Federal Government is committed to bolstering military operations in the region.

“This powerful team from the defence sector is here, the Chief of Defence Staff himself, the two commanders, both outgoing and incoming, and representatives of all the service chiefs,” he said.

He continued, “We are here this afternoon, Your Excellency, to engage our team here and find out what their requirements are, so as to stop the new trend of insecurity we have been seeing in Borno State and the North-east.”

The minister stated that President Tinubu has mandated them to meet all operational needs.

“The President has given us the directive to make sure we provide everything required to stop this ugly tide,” he said.

He acknowledged the relative peace previously enjoyed in the state and promised to work with the governor’s insights.

“We are here to engage you and the state on what advice and guidance you might have for the Armed Forces. We believe your suggestions and ideas will help us further strengthen our strategies and tactics on how to end the insecurity,” Badaru concluded.

2027: Tinubu Administration Is The Real Enemy, Next Election Will Not Be About Party – Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the 2027 general elections will not be a typical clash between political parties, but rather a confrontation between the Nigerian people and a government that, in his words, has “plunged the nation into untold suffering.”

Atiku was responding to recent political defections, including that of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa—his running mate in the 2023 presidential election—from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reacting on his verified Facebook page, Atiku made it clear he holds no ill will over the defections.

Let me be unequivocal: freedom of association and expression are not optional in a democracy — they are fundamental rights. Alongside these stand the pillars of a just and functional democratic society: the people, the rule of law, credible elections, and accountability. Undermine any of these, and democracy itself begins to crumble.”

He added that his views have been widely sought since the political realignments began.

I have been overwhelmed with inquiries from concerned Nigerians, all eager to understand my position on the latest political shifts, particularly the defection of some PDP members to the ruling party.”

According to Atiku, what’s unfolding is more than just inter-party dynamics.

The coming political battle is not APC versus PDP, or LP versus APC. It is Nigerians versus an administration that has plunged the nation into untold suffering. The economy is in freefall. Inflation is choking the masses. Jobs are vanishing. Youth restiveness is surging to terrifying levels. Nigerians are not just tired — they are angry, and rightfully so.”

On his recent visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari, which sparked criticism in some quarters, Atiku defended his action, referencing historical political consultations.

Some have resorted to insults because I visited former President Muhammadu Buhari. Let’s not rewrite history: Buhari is not only a former leader but a significant statesman in the Nigerian political landscape. During the 2013 opposition merger, the leaders of the time consulted widely — including visits to Obasanjo and Babangida. So why is it now sacrilegious for me and other leaders to visit Buhari in Kaduna?”

He continued “If you truly believe in freedom of association, then you must respect the rights of all political actors to engage, regardless of party lines. When PDP leaders are busy sipping tea and brokering power deals with President Tinubu, it’s called strategic alliance. But the moment I greet Peter Obi, el-Rufai, or visit Buhari, it becomes a national emergency. Hypocrisy and the politics of selective outrage have never been this fashionable!”

Positioning himself as a leader open to coalition-building, Atiku emphasized the need for unity against what he called government incompetence.

This moment is about collective survival. The real enemy is not one another — it is the Tinubu administration’s abysmal failure. We must reject every attempt to distract us with ethnic, regional, or religious sentiments. These are tools of manipulation, designed to divide and conquer, used by those with nothing else to offer.”

He concluded with a sharp critique of the current administration’s leadership:

The Tinubu administration has no achievements to stand on, no credible record to defend. Its only strategy is chaos and division, because that’s the last refuge of the incompetent. And make no mistake— an incompetent captain does not only wreck his ship; he endangers the lives of everyone on board.”

Begin Drug Tests With Politicians First – NANS Slams NDLEA

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to include political office holders and candidates in its proposed mandatory drug testing initiative.

This call comes as the NDLEA, led by Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), has suggested drug integrity tests for various groups such as corps members and prospective couples to combat substance abuse.

During a courtesy visit to the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja, Marwa reiterated that the tests are meant to be preventive, not punitive, aimed at early detection and treatment for those who test positive to prevent addiction and other health issues.

However, NANS has raised concerns about the selectivity of the initiative. In a statement on Thursday, the association’s Vice President for Inter-Campus and Gender Affairs, Akinbodunse Felicia, praised the NDLEA’s efforts but stressed that the drug tests should not target only young Nigerians.

She emphasized that those seeking elective positions and those already holding public offices should also be subject to the same drug integrity tests.

“The proposed drug test is a commendable step, but it must not target only young Nigerians,” Akinbodunse stated.

“If we are to build a drug-free society, then the spotlight must also shine on those in power — those who make and enforce the laws.”

She further called for legislation that would institutionalize mandatory drug testing for political candidates and office holders, reinforcing that leaders should be held to higher standards.

“We applaud the NDLEA’s proactive approach to tackling drug abuse through early detection. However, promoting a drug-free society requires consistency and fairness,” she added.

Akinbodunse highlighted the troubling history of some political figures being linked to drug-related misconduct and argued that if young Nigerians are required to undergo drug tests before entering service or marriage, politicians should face similar scrutiny.

She urged the NDLEA to collaborate with the National Assembly to ensure the passage of a law that mandates drug testing for political figures.

“A clean and drug-free leadership will inspire public confidence and demonstrate that no one is above accountability,” Akinbodunse concluded.

NANS reaffirmed its commitment to supporting any legitimate efforts to combat substance abuse, but emphasized that such policies must be fair and inclusive, covering all sectors and social classes equally.
