Tinubu Meets Makinde, Mutfwang At Aso Rock Amid 2027 Calculations

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday held separate meetings with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The two governors arrived at the State House at different times, with Mutfwang arriving at about 3:00 pm, while Makinde followed around 3:30 pm.

The meetings are taking place against the backdrop of ongoing political realignments as key political actors begin strategic consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Makinde, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, remains one of the few PDP governors who have not defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress despite a wave of defections that has weakened the opposition.

The Oyo State governor is widely believed to harbour presidential ambitions and is said to be positioning himself for the PDP’s presidential ticket in 2027.

Mutfwang, on the other hand, recently defected from the PDP to the APC, joining a growing number of opposition figures aligning with the ruling party.

Thursday’s meeting marked his first known engagement with President Tinubu since his defection.

President Tinubu has in recent months intensified consultations with governors across party lines as political activities ahead of the next general elections gradually gather momentum.

US Judge Bars Government From Searching Devices Seized From Journalists

A United States federal judge has barred government officials from examining electronic devices seized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation from a Washington Post journalist, pending the resolution of ongoing legal proceedings.

The ruling, delivered on Wednesday by US Magistrate Judge William Porter, directed that materials taken from reporter Hannah Natanson must be preserved but not reviewed until the court grants further authorisation.

“The government must preserve but must not review any of the materials that law enforcement seized until the court authorises review by further order,” Judge Porter ruled.

Natanson, who covers the US federal government for The Washington Post, has reported extensively on job cuts in Washington following President Donald Trump’s return to office for a second term.

According to the newspaper, FBI agents seized Natanson’s work laptop during a raid on her Virginia residence on January 14, along with her personal laptop, mobile phone, and watch.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi said the search was linked to an investigation into an alleged leak from the Pentagon, amid tightened media restrictions since Trump assumed office.

Although FBI agents reportedly informed Natanson that she is not a target of the investigation, press freedom advocates have raised concerns that the action could set a dangerous precedent and have a chilling effect on journalism in the United States.

In a statement, The Washington Post condemned the seizure, warning that the confiscation of a reporter’s confidential newsgathering materials undermines free speech and press freedom.

The newspaper said it has asked the court to order the immediate return of all seized items and to bar their use, warning that anything short of that would normalise newsroom raids and legitimise censorship through search warrants.

NSCDC Promotes 147 Officers In Enugu, Charges Them On Discipline, Professionalism

The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Enugu State Command, Dr. Elijah Willie, has charged newly promoted officers of the Corps to uphold professionalism, integrity, and discipline in the discharge of their duties.

Dr. Willie gave the charge on Thursday in Enugu during the decoration ceremony of 147 officers who were promoted to various ranks for the 2025/2026 promotion exercise.

The event took place at the NSCDC Enugu State Command Headquarters.

He congratulated the officers on their elevation, describing the promotions as recognition of their dedication, discipline, and commitment to service.

According to him, promotion in the Corps is not merely a change of rank but a call to higher responsibility and leadership.

“As you wear your new ranks today, I charge you to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and discipline. Lead by example, respect the chain of command, and ensure that your conduct reflects the honour and values of the Corps,” Willie said.

The commandant reminded the officers that their new status comes with increased expectations, urging them to demonstrate renewed zeal, improved performance, and unwavering loyalty in the protection of lives and critical national assets across Enugu State.

He also called on officers and men of the command to remain united, focused, and committed to their collective mandate, expressing confidence that the Corps would continue to strengthen its image and operational effectiveness.

Speaking at the event, the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC Enugu State Command, Pamela Chukwu, who was promoted to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Corps, DSC, expressed gratitude to the management of the Corps.

Chukwu described her elevation as a motivation to do more, noting that promotion is one of the ways the Corps recognises hard work and dedication.

She pledged to live up to expectations and continue to serve with diligence and professionalism.

Impeachment Move Against Fubara Hits The Rocks As Rivers Chief Judge Declines Assembly’s Request

The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi, has declined a request by the Rivers State House of Assembly to constitute a judicial panel to investigate Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, over allegations of gross misconduct.

Justice Amadi based his decision on existing court orders restraining him from receiving, processing, or acting on any request to set up such a panel.

In a letter dated January 20 and addressed to the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, the chief judge disclosed that two separate court orders served on his office on January 16, 2026 expressly barred him from taking steps toward the constitution of an investigative panel.

He noted that the orders remain valid and binding.

The chief judge stressed that constitutionalism and the rule of law demand strict obedience to subsisting court orders, regardless of personal or institutional views about their propriety.

Justice Amadi also referred to judicial precedents, recalling a 2007 case in which the Chief Judge of Kwara State was criticised for disregarding a restraining order before setting up an investigative panel.

That action, he noted, was later nullified by the Court of Appeal.

He further observed that the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly has already lodged an appeal against the court orders at the Court of Appeal, thereby deepening the legal contest surrounding the matter.

According to him, the doctrine of lis pendens requires that parties and institutions maintain the status quo until the appeal is determined.

“The existence of subsisting injunctions and a pending appeal has effectively tied my hands,” Justice Amadi said, adding that he is legally incapacitated from exercising his constitutional responsibility under Section 188(5) of the 1999 Constitution at this time.

The chief judge appealed to lawmakers to acknowledge the legal limitations imposed by the court orders and urged the Assembly to be magnanimous in appreciating the prevailing legal position.

LP Crisis: Abure Rejects Judgment Recognising Otti-Aligned Committee, Heads To Appeal Court

The leadership crisis within the Labour Party further escalated on Wednesday as the faction led by the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, rejected the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja directing the Independent National Electoral Commission to recognise the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee aligned with Abia State Governor, Alex Otti.

Abure, in a statement issued in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, announced plans to challenge the ruling at the Court of Appeal, arguing that the judgment conflicted with the April 2025 decision of the Supreme Court on the party’s leadership dispute.

The Federal High Court, presided over by Justice Peter Lifu, had ruled that Abure’s tenure as national chairman had elapsed and consequently ordered INEC to recognise the caretaker committee headed by Senator Nenadi Usman pending the conduct of the party’s national convention.

Reacting to the ruling, the Abure-led National Working Committee described the decision as a misinterpretation of the Supreme Court’s judgment and an intrusion into the internal affairs of the Labour Party.

Although the party said it was yet to obtain the Certified True Copy of the judgment, it maintained that the decision would be challenged.

“From the information available to us so far, it is clear that the party will appeal the judgment. Our position will become even clearer once we study the Certified True Copy,” the statement said.

The Abure faction alleged that the handling of the case was marred by procedural irregularities, claiming that developments surrounding the assignment of the case raised concerns even before judgment was delivered.

According to the statement, the matter was initially assigned to another judge before it was reassigned under circumstances the party described as questionable, which it said constituted an early warning sign.

The party further alleged that it was denied fair hearing, claiming the court refused to allow it respond to issues raised in a counter-affidavit before adjourning the matter for judgment.

It also accused its opponents of pre-empting the outcome of the case, alleging that celebrations over the ruling began weeks before judgment was delivered.
Questioning the substance of the ruling, the

Abure-led leadership argued that the court’s decision contradicted established judicial precedents and the Supreme Court’s position that courts lack the power to appoint or impose leadership on political parties.

The statement recalled that the Supreme Court had earlier declined jurisdiction in the leadership tussle, holding that such matters were internal affairs of political parties.

“The Supreme Court never declared that our tenure had expired. It simply held that leadership issues within a political party are internal matters beyond the jurisdiction of the courts,” the statement said.

Defending the party’s March 2024 national convention, the leadership insisted that no leadership vacuum existed, noting that the convention was held before the expiration of the executive’s tenure.

It faulted the court’s conclusion that a vacuum had been created, arguing that the validity and legality of the convention were not properly interrogated.

While urging party members to remain calm, the Abure faction said it would exhaust all legal options to reclaim its position, stressing that it would not relinquish leadership under pressure.

On Wednesday, Justice Lifu ordered INEC to recognise the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee pending the conduct of a national convention, holding that Abure’s tenure had elapsed.

The court ruled that the caretaker committee constituted by the party’s National Executive Committee was the only valid authority to act for and represent the Labour Party, relying on what it described as the subsisting position of the Supreme Court.

The dispute followed an expanded stakeholders’ meeting of the Labour Party held in Umuahia, Abia State, hosted by Governor Alex Otti and chaired by the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, where the National Executive Committee resolved to remove Abure as national chairman.

Subsequently, a 29-member caretaker committee was constituted, with Senator Nenadi Usman appointed as chairperson.

Abure later approached the Federal High Court seeking judicial affirmation of his continued stay in office.

In April 2025, the Supreme Court set aside an earlier Court of Appeal judgment that recognised Abure as national chairman, ruling that appellate courts lacked jurisdiction to determine the leadership of a political party.

Dorayi K!llings: Kano Gov Offers House, Hajj, Umrah To Bereaved Father

Governor Yusuf,

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has approved an extensive welfare package for the father of the woman and six children brutally killed in the Chiranci Dorayi area of the state, including a new house, sponsorship for Hajj and Umrah, and full government support.

The governor announced the intervention on Wednesday during a condolence visit to the bereaved family, describing the incident as one of the most heartbreaking tragedies in Kano State in recent times.

Governor Yusuf said the government could not allow the grieving father to face such an overwhelming loss alone, stressing that compassion and responsibility must guide governance in moments of tragedy.

“This is a loss that has shaken the conscience of Kano State. No parent should endure this kind of pain. As a government, we must stand with him and ensure he is supported,” the governor said.

The Dorayi killings had shocked residents on Saturday after a family of seven, comprising a mother and her six children, were murdered in their home, sparking widespread outrage and renewed concerns over domestic violence and security within residential areas.

Following the incident, security agencies launched investigations and arrested three suspects linked to the killings.

In a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the welfare intervention was described as part of the administration’s commitment to justice, compassion, and social protection for victims of violent crimes.

“The governor has approved the provision of a befitting house, comprehensive welfare support, and sponsorship for Hajj and Umrah to enable the bereaved father rebuild his life,” the statement said.

The governor further assured the man of continued government support, including assistance should he decide to remarry, as well as all necessary help to restore his dignity and stability.

On the matter of justice, Yusuf directed the Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to ensure the speedy prosecution of suspects already arrested in connection with the killings.

“Justice must not be delayed. Anyone found guilty will face the full weight of the law, and I will not hesitate to sign the death warrant once the courts conclude their work,” the governor said.

He noted that similar resolve would apply to other major criminal cases in the state, including the murder of Hanifa and the Gezawa arson attack, once suspects are convicted by the courts.

Governor Yusuf also commended the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, and other security agencies for their swift response and collaboration, which led to the arrest of the suspects.

In a gesture of appreciation, the bereaved father donated his personal house to the Kano State Government for the construction of an Islamiyya school to serve the Chiranci community.

The governor prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and for strength and comfort for their family and the people of Kano State.

In a related development, Yusuf also paid condolence visits to the family of the late Dr Bature AbdulAziz, President of the National Patriotic Elders Forum for Peace and Unity, whom he described as a committed patriot and advocate of peace.

He also visited Baba Umar, Executive Secretary of the Kano State Private and Voluntary Schools Board, to commiserate with him over the death of his mother.

Varsity Student Commits Suicide After Losing House Rent To Gambling

A 300-level student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, identified as Kelvin Danlami, has reportedly died by suicide following the loss of money meant for house rent to gambling.

Danlami, a Computer Science undergraduate, was said to have taken his own life on Monday after allegedly mismanaging funds entrusted to him, a development that has thrown the university community into mourning.

Confirming the incident, fellow student Musa Abdullahi, in a condolence message, warned youths against the lure of quick money and the dangers associated with gambling.

“Yesterday, we lost a student from my alma mater who committed suicide after mismanaging money kept for house rent due to gambling,” Abdullahi said.

“This is how gambling cut short the life of a promising 300-level Computer Science student. Young people should avoid anything that promises quick money through the wrong means.”

The Students’ Union Government of the university also expressed deep sorrow over the incident.

In a condolence message signed by its General Secretary, Aliyu Abubakar, the SUG described Danlami’s death as a painful and irreparable loss to the institution.

“The Students’ Union Government received with deep sadness the news of the passing of Kelvin Danlami, a 300-level student of the Department of Computer Science,” the statement read.

“On behalf of the entire student community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, department, and the entire university.”

The union noted that the deceased’s passing had left a deep void within the university community and prayed for strength and comfort for his family and colleagues.

Reacting to the incident, the Niger State Police Command said it had commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.

The command’s spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, said information received indicated that the student was found in his room in the early hours of Monday.

“One of his neighbours raised an alarm after discovering the situation, and he was rushed to the General Hospital in Lapai, where he was confirmed dead,” Abiodun said.

“Police operatives visited the scene, carried out a preliminary investigation, and contacted the family of the deceased. Further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the reason behind the incident.”

NBA Seeks Investigation As Anambra Task Force Brutalises Lawyer In Awka

The Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, Awka Branch, has demanded a thorough investigation into the alleged assault of a lawyer by operatives of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, OCHA, task force at the Eke-Awka Market in Awka, Anambra State.

The association condemned the incident, which reportedly occurred on Monday, describing it as a disturbing display of impunity by operatives of a state-run enforcement agency charged with maintaining environmental sanitation and public order.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Publicity Secretary of the NBA, Awka Branch, Michael Ozojiofor, identified the victim as Barrister Charles Ifeanyi.

He alleged that the lawyer was brutally attacked by members of the task force, including operatives of the Agunaechemba security outfit, following what the association described as a false claim that he obstructed their enforcement exercise.

Ozojiofor said video clips accompanying the statement captured the moment the lawyer was forcefully dragged into the task force vehicle as traders and passers-by watched and recorded the incident.

He added that subsequent images and videos showed visible injuries sustained by the lawyer.

According to him, members of the NBA Human Rights Committee who visited the task force office were informed that the operatives were carrying out an enforcement operation and that the lawyer allegedly challenged their authority.

“He was detained in their cell alongside his brother, who had gone to inquire about his arrest,” Ozojiofor said, adding that the operatives also denied the human rights team access to the detained lawyer and threatened to arrest them as well.

He described the conduct of the operatives as a reflection of long-standing lawlessness and abuse of power against residents, noting that some officers even suggested that the visiting lawyers should be treated in the same manner.

The NBA said it had formally notified the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, as well as the Nigeria Police Force, over what it described as persistent acts of misconduct by the task force.

“The branch condemns this assault in strong terms and will take all necessary steps to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” Ozojiofor stated.

Speaking separately, the assaulted lawyer, Charles Ifeanyi, said the incident occurred between 3 pm and 5 pm at Ezenwa Plaza within the Eke-Awka Market.

He explained that he was at the market when task force operatives began confiscating a trader’s goods.

“As the goods were falling, the trader followed them pleading. Suddenly, one of the officials slapped him,” Ifeanyi said.

“I only asked why the trader was slapped when he did nothing wrong. Immediately, about 15 of them descended on me and started beating me.”

He said he hit his head on the pavement during the assault, after which he was handcuffed, dragged into a vehicle, and his phone seized along with those of individuals who were recording the incident.

Ifeanyi further alleged that operatives of the Agunaechemba security outfit later joined in the assault before he was taken to a detention facility in Awka, where he was held for several hours and released late at night.

“I sustained injuries to my head and body. I have just returned from Amaku Hospital, where I underwent medical examinations. The results are still being awaited,” he said.

The lawyer disclosed that petitions had been submitted to the Commissioner of Police, with copies forwarded to the Commissioner for Environment, who oversees the task force.

Reacting to the development, the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, confirmed that the incident occurred, noting that investigations had been initiated.

“Although it is wrong for anyone to be manhandled, I spoke with the commander, who claimed the lawyer challenged the enforcement team. An investigation will, however, be conducted,” he said.

Efforts to reach the Commissioner for Environment, Felix Odimegwu, were unsuccessful as calls and messages to his phone were not returned as of the time of filing this report.

VIDEO: Enugu Govt Recovers N1.27bn From Sujimoto As EFCC Hands Over Cheques

The Enugu State Government has recovered the sum of N1.27 billion from Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited following investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, into an abandoned contract awarded to the company.

The recovered funds were formally handed over to the state government on Wednesday when the anti-graft agency presented cheques to Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, Secretary to the state government, while assuring that further recoveries were ongoing.

The EFCC said the refund followed its investigation into an unexecuted N5.7 billion contract for the construction of 22 Smart Green Schools across Enugu State, allegedly abandoned by the company after receiving a substantial mobilisation fee.

DAILY GAZETTE recalls that the commission had earlier obtained a court order permitting it to detain the Chief Executive Officer of Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited, Sijibomi Ogundele, in connection with the matter.

According to investigators, Ogundele received 50 percent of the total contract sum, amounting to N5,762,565,475.25, paid by the Enugu State Government in February 2025 to accelerate work across all project sites.

Authorities allege that after collecting the funds, the developer failed to return to the sites, abandoned the projects and ignored several requests for accountability from both the state government and the EFCC.

The EFCC further disclosed that Ogundele was declared wanted on September 5 after repeatedly failing to honour summons issued by the commission.

Before eventually turning himself in, the Sujimoto CEO took to social media, where he defended his actions, claiming the contract was underpriced and that inflation made execution impossible.

In response, the Enugu State Government issued a detailed statement disputing his claims, insisting that the contract terms were clear and accusing the developer of disappearing after receiving the mobilisation payment without delivering commensurate work on any of the sites.

At the handover ceremony, EFCC officials reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to recovering all outstanding public funds linked to the project and ensuring accountability.
