Father, Stepmother Arrested As Seven-Year-Old Loses Both Legs To Domestic Abuse

A disturbing case of domestic violence in Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State has left a seven-year-old boy, Abubakar Sani, permanently disabled after enduring severe abuse from his father and stepmother.

According to the Kaduna State Ministry of Human Services and Social Development, the boy’s father, Sani Tanimi Maishago, allegedly tied his legs and poured boiling water on them in punishment for stealing biscuits.

The horrific act caused critical injuries that led to the amputation of both legs below the knees.

Doctors at the Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, where the child was rushed for emergency care, said the procedure was necessary to save his life.

“The amputation has resulted in a permanent disability,” said the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Dr Abdulkadir Musa.

“But the child could be fitted with artificial limbs in the future.”

In addition to the physical abuse, the ministry revealed that the young boy had been locked up for over 20 days without proper nutrition.

Speaking at the hospital where she visited the victim, the Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, Hajiya Salisu, expressed profound sadness.

“This is a heartbreaking case,” she said. “The child was subjected to inhumane treatment by those meant to protect him.”

The commissioner confirmed that both the father and the stepmother have been arrested and are currently in police custody.

“They will be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations,” she assured.

She also emphasized the state government’s resolve to fully implement the Child Protection Law.

“Kaduna will not tolerate child abuse, domestic violence, or rape in any form,” Salisu stated.

Dr Musa, while addressing journalists, urged parents to adopt non-violent methods in child discipline.

“We call on parents to exercise patience and restraint when correcting their children,” he said.

“Violent discipline can lead to irreversible consequences.”

Rep Accuses Security Agencies Of Complicity In Plateau Killings, HURIWA Urges Tinubu’s Impeachment

A member of the House of Representatives, Daniel Asama, has alleged that security operatives are fully aware of the identities and hideouts of those responsible for the ongoing wave of attacks in Plateau State, which he described as a form of genocide.

Asama, who represents Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency, made the allegation during an appearance on Channels Television on Thursday.

He lamented the scale of violence that has claimed over 100 lives in the past two weeks and accused security forces of inaction.

“The security agencies know where these attacks have been coming from. They know the direction. The people in the community can show them the routes,” Asama said.

“I don’t believe for a moment that security operatives are unaware of the attackers’ locations. If they engage the locals, they will get the information they need.”

The lawmaker described the attacks as deliberate and targeted, aimed at displacing communities in what he believes is an orchestrated effort at land grabbing.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), led by Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, has commiserated with Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang over the recurring violence in the state.

In a condolence message delivered yesterday, the NGF expressed deep sorrow over the bloodshed and called for an immediate end to the carnage.

“There can’t be any meaningful development in a state of violence. The cycle of violence must stop,” Abdulrazaq said, while urging security operatives to rise to the occasion and defend citizens.

Governor Mutfwang, in response, appreciated the governors’ solidarity, noting that the entire state was grieving.

“This recent happening took us by surprise, but we will not relent,” he said.

“We will not allow these attacks to derail our administration’s commitment to peace and justice.”

The Kwara governor also urged community leaders and influencers to rally around efforts to foster unity and sustainable peace.

“We call on leaders and influencers across all communities and sectors in Plateau to join the governor in the task of uniting the people and restoring sustainable peace. Leaders should come together to speak strongly against violence of any kind.”

“We urge the good people of Plateau to resolve all differences through dialogue, fair negotiations, mutual respect, and perspective taking,” Abdulrazaq said.

In a separate reaction, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has demanded that the National Assembly initiate impeachment proceedings against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his administration’s failure to end the killings in Plateau, Benue, and other parts of the country.

HURIWA warned that it might be compelled to escalate the matter to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague if the situation persists.

“The Nigerian Constitution, in clear terms, stated that ‘the primary duty of government is to ensure the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government,’” the group said.

“The President has all the powers to quell any insurgency in any part of the country, but such has not been enforced.”

HURIWA also called on Tinubu to deploy the full weight of his constitutional authority to bring what it described as genocidal violence to an immediate end.

Traditional Priestess, Seven Others Reportedly Kidnapped In Enugu As Abductors Demand N15 Million Ransom

Eight persons, including a traditional priestess and four farmers, have been reportedly abducted by suspected kidnappers in Ohebe Orba, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

DAILY GAZETTE gathered that the incident occurred on Wednesday night, April 16, 2025.

The priestess, along with three other worshippers, was said to be heading to a nearby river for rituals when they were intercepted and taken away by the gunmen.

The kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N50 million but later reduced their demand to N15 million after contacting the families of the victims.

Confirming the worsening security situation, Senator Okey Ezea, who represents Enugu North Senatorial District, said: “Kidnappers and Fulani herdsmen have taken over Enugu North Senatorial Zone including Nsukka.”

The latest incident comes just a day after 15 abducted individuals were released from captivity at the Ibagwa Agu farm settlement in Nsukka Local Government Area.

They were freed on Thursday, April 17, 2025.

This development follows a similar case reported on April 12, when 13 individuals, including Maurice Osmond, his son, and another child, were kidnapped in the Ibagwa Agu community, also in Nsukka LGA.

The kidnappers reportedly demanded N10 million ransom for each victim.

While the Enugu State Police Command has made recent strides in combating kidnapping, including a raid in October 2024 where two suspected kidnappers were neutralized and a victim rescued, the frequency of abductions remains alarming.

Easter: Enugu Police Commissioner Greets Residents, Assures Enhanced Security

The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mr. Mamman Giwa, has extended warm Easter greetings to the residents of the state and reassured them of the police command’s unwavering commitment to safety throughout the festive period and beyond.

In a goodwill message issued on his behalf by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, Giwa congratulated Christians in Enugu for joining their counterparts around the world to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

He emphasized the importance of strategic deployment of the command’s operational and intelligence assets to ensure public safety across the state.

Giwa has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and heads of tactical and operational units to mobilize and coordinate their resources for maximum effect.

According to him, “supervisory and superior officers would be held liable for any lapses in their areas of responsibility.”

He further stated: “The command extends warm Easter wishes to all Christians in the state; we want all to celebrate in reverence of Jesus Christ, who is the reason for the season.

“Easter is a time of love, sacrifice and renewed faith. I call on residents to embrace peace, compassion and goodwill during the celebrations.

“The command wishes Enugu State residents a peaceful celebration.”

Why I Deleted Old Posts Criticising Peter Obi – BudgIT Founder

Peter Obi,

Seun Onigbinde, co-founder of BudgIT, has responded to social media scrutiny over the deletion of his old tweets that criticised former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Some of the now-deleted posts, dating as far back as 2015, resurfaced recently, with critics sharing screenshots and questioning his apparent shift in stance after later endorsing Obi’s presidential run.

However, Onigbinde maintained that he doesn’t owe anyone an explanation for editing or removing his past statements.

“To those suggesting I’ve been deleting tweets, I simply say this: I don’t owe you that explanation, nor do I have the time or interest to engage in such distractions,” he stated.

He attributed the deletion to the increasingly toxic atmosphere on social media, especially Twitter (now X), where he said nuanced discussions are often lost in black-and-white thinking.
“Sadly, the nature of discourse on social media—especially Twitter (X)—often swings in a binary fashion: ‘you’re either with us or against us.’ But it doesn’t have to be that way.”

Onigbinde revealed that the rising tide of personal attacks pushed him to restrict access to his account:
“I decided to protect my tweets following a coordinated wave of falsehoods, personal insults, and even curses directed at me.”

Addressing the notion that he may be trying to hide or revise his opinions, he clarified:
“If I find a tweet that lacks context or no longer serves clarity, I’m happy to remove it. That doesn’t change my lifelong commitment to public accountability—a principle I believe remains one of the strongest levers for a better society.”

Onigbinde also expressed concern about the evolution of X into a hostile environment dominated by misinformation and aggressive engagement:
“X has sadly become a poisoned well, where anonymity, monetized virality, and troll farms work together to tear down honest voices and raise toxicity.”

In a broader message to Nigerian youth, he encouraged critical thinking and respect for diverse viewpoints.

“My hope for younger Nigerians is to resist the harmful stereotypes that shrink their worldview and undermine their potential. I have been shaped by friendships and support from people across faiths, races, and genders.”

He concluded with a firm stance on setting digital boundaries:
“If you don’t follow my work in BudgIT, Tracka, or Ogbomoso but choose to show up with vile commentary, chances are you’ve already been muted or blocked. These are not acts of malice—they’re simply boundaries.”

UK Far-right Figurehead Loses Appeal Against 18-Month Jail Sentence

British far-right figure, Tommy Robinson has failed in his attempt to overturn an 18-month prison sentence, as the UK Court of Appeal rejected his arguments on health grounds.

Robinson, known for his anti-Muslim rhetoric and for helping ignite last year’s anti-immigration riots, had appealed the sentence through his legal team, claiming that the conditions of his confinement were worsening his mental health.

His lawyers argued that his time in solitary confinement was exacerbating his ADHD and a previous bout of complex PTSD.

“He is being kept safe, but being safe is making him ill,” said his lawyer, Alisdair Williamson, during last week’s hearing in London.

However, in a written decision released on Wednesday, three judges of the Court of Appeal dismissed the new medical evidence, stating that it “fell far short of the standard for a successful criminal appeal.”

Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, is currently serving time for contempt of court—a civil offence.

The charge stemmed from his defiance of a court order which barred him from repeating libellous claims about a Syrian refugee who later won a lawsuit against him.

Despite concerns about his safety, Robinson is being held in isolation at a prison in central England due to intelligence suggesting he could be attacked by fellow inmates.

Government lawyers representing the Solicitor General urged the court to maintain the original verdict, calling it “impeccable” and arguing that there were “no grounds for altering the sentence.”

Robinson, who founded the now-disbanded English Defence League in 2009, has built a large online audience by promoting anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim views.

His rhetoric has been linked to unrest, including violent riots in England and Northern Ireland in mid-2024, where protesters were heard chanting his name.

Those riots were triggered by false social media claims involving a Muslim asylum seeker.

In February 2025, thousands of his supporters rallied in London demanding his release.

The protest drew the attention of US billionaire Elon Musk, who voiced support for Robinson on his platform, X.

While Robinson portrays himself as a champion of free speech, his history includes multiple criminal convictions, including for assault.

He has also previously served time for contempt of court—an offence that, although not criminal, carries serious legal consequences.

The appeal ruling cements Robinson’s continued incarceration, despite his team’s insistence that his health is deteriorating behind bars.

No Court Order Asking Rivers Administrator To Vacate Office – Judiciary Clarifies

The Rivers State High Court has denied reports suggesting that Governor Siminalayi Fubara obtained a court order compelling a sole administrator to leave Government House.

The news, which surfaced via an online platform, had claimed that Justice Boma Diepriye ruled the appointment of the sole administrator as “illegal, null, and void.”

However, the judiciary has since clarified that this information is both misleading and inaccurate.

According to a statement released by the Chief Registrar of the Rivers State High Court, David Ihua-Maduenyi, the judge cited in the report—Justice Boma Diepriye—appears to have been confused with Justice Boma Diepiri, who is indeed a judge of the State High Court, not the Federal High Court as implied.

“In view of the above, I wish to state as follows: Hon. Justice Boma Diepiri is not a Judge of the Federal High Court but a Judge of the Rivers State High Court, and is on Easter Vacation, which commenced on Monday, 14th April, 2025,” he stated.

He further clarified the current judicial schedule: “For the period of the Easter Vacation, only the vacation Judge is sitting; and Hon. Justice Boma Diepiri is not the Vacation Judge.”

The judiciary emphasized that no such order has been issued by any State High Court regarding the matter raised in the online publication.

“No State High Court gave any order(s) relating to or concerning the subject matter as captioned in the online news,” Ihua-Maduenyi stressed.

He expressed concern over the actions of some online media outlets:
“It is regrettable that some bloggers and online news reporters have traded professionalism on the altar of pecuniary gains they seek to derive from traffic on their social media handles and web pages.”

The judiciary urged the public and media to verify any judicial-related claims before going to press:
“Henceforth, the Judiciary enjoins the general public to seek clarification on any news report concerning the Court and officials of the Court before publication.”

Sultan Of Sokoto Labels Social Media A ‘Terrorist Organisation’

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has described social media as a terrorist organisation, calling on security agencies to confront its growing influence and disruptive potential.

Speaking during the 7th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council held behind closed doors in Maiduguri, Borno State, the monarch expressed strong disapproval of the negative role social media plays in spreading falsehoods and inciting unrest.

He declared, “Social media is one terrorist organisation. Somebody can sit in the comfort of their home and formulate stories, and you will consider that it is true.

Social media is a terrorist organisation that we must deal with. Security agencies must deal with this terrorist organisation called social media.”

The Sultan also addressed the continuing violence in Plateau and other parts of the country, strongly condemning the loss of innocent lives and urging swift action from political leaders and law enforcement.

“Our coming together as traditional rulers in the North, I believe, we have more than 86 in the North. We will speak with one voice to say ‘enough is enough’ of this senseless killing of innocent people across the North and the country.

“We have released so many statements of condemnation, but how many times do we need to condemn these killings before our political leaders and security agencies stop or reduce the insecurity in the country to the barest minimum?

“We, the traditional rulers, feel bad and saddened when our people are killed by people we don’t know. It’s high time we worked harder, talked to ourselves and in a closed-door meeting, discuss it.”

“We shall advise our political leaders, they are at the helm of affairs and we will work with them,” he said.

Kano Lawmaker Warns Northern Hunters Against Travelling South With Weapons

A member of the House of Representatives from Kano State, Alhassan Kabiru Rirum, has issued a warning to local hunters from his constituency, urging them to desist from traveling to southern Nigeria with dangerous weapons.

Rirum, who represents Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya Federal Constituency, expressed concern that transporting such weapons could provoke unrest.

He made the remarks on Thursday during a condolence visit to the families of 16 hunters killed in Uromi, Edo State.

The former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly visited Torankawa village in Bunkure Local Government Area to commiserate with the bereaved and emphasized that such movement of hunters is outdated and potentially dangerous.

According to him, “The present-day Nigeria requires people doing businesses or traditions that would not create any suspicion that might result in uncertainties.”

Rirum, a member of the Aniebonam-led faction of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), donated N5 million to support the grieving families.

He also pledged to sponsor a bill in the National Assembly to address the safety concerns surrounding local hunters and their interaction with host communities.

He stated, “Carrying dangerous Weapons and moving around with them from one end to another in this sensitive period of Insecurity in the land will surely send a bad signal and result in causing chaos, therefore, our hunters should henceforth stop it.”

Rirum recounted a recent incident involving hunters from his hometown, saying, “Just recently, over 30 of my Rano Hometown Hunters were apprehended in Ondo State, I had to personally go and see the Governor and show every evidence that they are not Criminals before he worked out for their release.”

He added, “If those people in Ondo who arrested our Rano Hunters were as senseless as those of Uromi, what do you think would have happened? The story would have been different by now.”

Also commenting on the matter, factional NNPP Chairman in Kano, Senator Masaud Jibrin Eldoguwa, said he was deeply affected by the incident but hoped it would serve as a lesson.

Eldoguwa said plans were underway to commence construction on a promised school, aimed at giving hope to the children of the slain hunters.

“The aim was to give the children of those killed hope that they are not neglected,” he said.

Meanwhile, Edo State Governor Monday Akpoholo had earlier visited the bereaved families three weeks ago, accompanied by top members of his cabinet.

He vowed that justice would be served and those behind the killings would be brought to book.

In a related move, the Kano State Government has set up a fact-finding delegation headed by Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.

The team is tasked with visiting Edo State to negotiate compensation for the victims’ families.

Ekiti Nursing Student’s Admission Withdrawn After Protesting Hostel Fee Hike

The College of Nursing Sciences (CONS), under the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) in Ado-Ekiti, has officially withdrawn the admission of Seluwa Oluwaseun Vincent, a 300-level student who was earlier suspended indefinitely for protesting against the increase in hostel accommodation fees.

Vincent, who was suspended in January 2025, received a withdrawal letter dated April 7, 2025, signed by the acting registrar of the college, Abe L.O.

The letter accused him of engaging in further misconduct during his suspension.

Vincent’s suspension was based on allegations including the “blatant refusal” to vacate an old hostel off-campus and verbally abusing the Student Affairs Officer (SAO).

The letter of suspension, dated January 3, 2025, was signed by the acting provost, Dr. Awe O. O.

Vincent, however, refuted the accusations in an interview with DAILY GAZETTE, claiming he was being targeted for challenging a hike in hostel fees from N100,000 to N280,000.

He alleged that the SAO, Mrs. Adaramola Bukola Ayodele, was “deliberately victimising him.”

Vincent further alleged that Ayodele defamed him by referring to him as mentally unstable.

“She blackmailed me before the school management and the disciplinary committee, defaming me and calling me a psychiatric patient and a ‘mad’ person,” he said.

In the withdrawal letter, the college cited Vincent’s continued misconduct, stating he had breached Section 5.6 of the 2023 Student’s Information Handbook (page 16), which emphasizes the need for students to “respect constituted authority.”

The letter stated, “It is on record that the Management of the College of Nursing Sciences, Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti placed you on indefinite suspension from the College via our correspondence reference number: CONS/EKSUTH/92/30 dated 3rd January, 2025, following cases of gross indiscipline established against you within the College.”

“Despite the above, and upon due investigation, it was gathered that you went ahead to commit another act of indiscipline while undergoing punishment for the aforementioned.”

“These continuous acts of yours contravene the rules and regulations contained in Section 5.6 of the Student’s Information Handbook, 2023 Edition (Pg. 16), of the College of Nursing Sciences, Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti that ‘every student must respect constituted authority’.”

“Consequently, and following due consideration, please be informed that you are hereby withdrawn from the College of Nursing Sciences, Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti with immediate effect for gross misconduct and violation of your Matriculation Oath.”

After his suspension, Vincent petitioned the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, requesting urgent intervention. In the petition, he accused the college of mistreatment, stating he had received threats of expulsion and withdrawal of admission.

The petition alleged ongoing intimidation from the SAO, stating that Vincent, who previously served as the Students’ Union Government Public Relations Officer, had faced “persistent bullying, public humiliation, and multiple threats.”

Vincent also said that “these actions are backed by the College’s Provost, Mrs. Olabisi Awe.”

SaharaReporters confirmed that parents of students at the college also rejected the hostel fee hike during a virtual meeting on April 6.

They appreciated the intervention of the House of Assembly but described the new fees as unjustified, especially given the poor condition of the hostels.

During the meeting, the parents expressed concern about “health and safety hazards,” pointing out that rooms measuring 6×8 feet were overcrowded with four students and that four gas cylinders were used in a kitchen with an asbestos roof.

They also criticized the harassment of students who reported unsafe hostel conditions, saying the management had shown “disregard for students’ welfare and safety.”

Students, too, voiced out against the SAO, accusing her of sustained bullying, verbal abuse, and rights violations.

According to their joint statement, the SAO had physically assaulted students, with some saying they had been “slapped or bullied.”

They also said she had invaded their privacy by demanding access to mobile phones and private messages without legal basis.

Despite the mounting complaints, students lamented that “their pleas had been ignored by authorities within and outside the institution.”

A separate report revealed that the N800 million hostel facility, recently inaugurated by Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, was already showing signs of poor construction, as parts of the building leak heavily when it rains.
