Edo Governor Announces Death Penalty For Kidnappers

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has announced that those convicted of kidnapping in the state will face the death penalty by hanging.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting in Uromi, Okpebholo affirmed his willingness to sign the death warrants of kidnappers found guilty by the courts.

He made this statement in an interactive session with leaders and members of the Arewa community in Esan land.

In a major move to curb kidnapping, the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) had recently passed a bill amending the Kidnapping Prohibition Amendment Law (and Related Matters 2013).

This new bill prescribes the death penalty for kidnappers and also mandates the confiscation and demolition of properties used in the commission of kidnapping.

“I take the issue of insecurity seriously and will not bend the rules but apply them strictly. The new law in the State permits us to demolish their properties and confiscate their lands,” Governor Okpebholo declared.

“We will bring kidnappers to the public and execute them to show our seriousness in line with the laws already passed by the Edo House of Assembly. I will not be afraid to sign it.”

The governor also emphasized his administration’s commitment to ending insecurity and violence in the state.

“We will not tolerate insecurity, killing, and kidnapping anymore,” he added.

Okpebholo called for public collaboration to enhance security efforts, stating that “security is the business of all and not for security agencies alone.”

He also outlined plans to employ vigilante teams, offering them salaries, unlike in previous years when they worked without compensation.

These vigilantes will receive training to work alongside security agencies to tackle crime and handle criminals effectively.

“It is time to start profiling people from other States who claim to be from the North and ensure they don’t spoil your name. Those destroying farmland, causing problems are not even from Nigeria,” the governor said.

Earlier, Alhaji Bawa Umar, Chairman of the Arewa community in Edo Central, expressed gratitude to the governor and the Onojie of Uromi for the peace that has been restored in the region.

The Kogi State Commissioner of Police (CP), Miller Dantawaye, has confirmed that an attack occurred on the family residence of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan in Obeiba Community, Okehi Local Government Area, Kogi State.

In a statement from Lokoja, the CP stated that, as of now, no arrest has been made.

“The command has been fully briefed on the unfortunate and criminal incident by the Okehi LGA Divisional Police Officer.

So far, no arrest has been made. Investigation into the incident has begun, and we shall get to the root of it. We will deal with those criminal elements that carried out the attack,” Dantawaye said.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, on her part, revealed on Thursday that the attackers mistakenly believed she was in town and targeted her family house on Tuesday night.

“During the attack, security operatives and community members responded promptly and chased them off. No one was hurt. A report on the incident was quickly made at the police area command of the LGA,” she said.

However, a statement from Akpoti-Uduaghan’s media team described the attack as a deliberate attempt to silence the senator, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District.

“We urge the Inspector-General of Police to immediately reinstate her security details for safety, considering this heinous attack. We condemn the brazen attack on Sen. Akpoti-Uduaghan’s family house in Obeiba-Ihima, Kogi on Tuesday, April 15. We call on the public to remain calm.”

Three Arrested As Police Raid IPOB Hideout In Imo

The Imo State Police Command has arrested three individuals suspected to be affiliated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) following a raid on a terror hideout in Okigwe Local Government Area.

Henry Okoye, spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, confirmed the arrests and the recovery of critical items during a press briefing at the command’s headquarters in Owerri on Friday.

“The successful raid marks a notable step in the ongoing efforts to maintain law and order and address security concerns in Okigwe LGA and the wider Imo State,” Okoye said.

The operation, which took place in the early hours of Thursday, was conducted by the command’s tactical teams in collaboration with local vigilante groups, based on credible intelligence.

“On sighting the operatives, the suspects opened fire, resulting in a gun battle during which three suspects were arrested, namely: Onyekaba Ikenna Innocent (21), Ugwu Ikenna (31), and Ofor Kasarachi (37), while two others escaped into the surrounding bushes,” Okoye explained.

The raid also led to the seizure of significant weapons and materials allegedly linked to terrorist activities.

“Items recovered from the scene include one AK-47 rifle, two pump-action shotguns, 18 live cartridges, mobile phones, laptops, and N10.3 million in cash,” Okoye confirmed.

“The recovered cash, based on preliminary investigations, is believed to have been contributed by IPOB members to finance acts of terrorism.”

Okoye reiterated the commitment of the Imo State Police under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, to continuing the crackdown on criminal elements that threaten public safety in the state.

“The command remains committed to sustaining the ongoing crackdown on criminal elements threatening public safety in Imo State,” Okoye concluded.

Wike: I Wanted Fubara Removed, But Tinubu Saved Him With State Of Emergency

Governor Fubara,

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that he had pushed for the complete removal of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, but President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency ultimately prevented that from happening.

Wike made this revelation during a media chat held in Abuja on Friday.

He expressed disapproval of the emergency declaration but admitted that it effectively rescued the embattled governor from being ousted.

“As a politician, I am not happy about the state of emergency in Rivers State,” Wike said.

“I wanted the outright removal of Governor Fubara. The president, by declaring a state of emergency, saved Fubara.”

President Tinubu had declared the emergency on March 18, 2025, suspending the governor, his deputy, and the state legislature, and installing Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as sole administrator.

Wike, who has been at the heart of the prolonged political tensions in Rivers, emphasized that Fubara’s situation had already deteriorated to an irredeemable point before Tinubu’s intervention.

“The governor was gone. He was gone, yes… so when people say the president did this, I say they should be praising him,” Wike stated.

“Every morning, they should go to the president and ask, ‘Can we wash your feet for saving us?’”

He also noted that while he is open to reconciliation, he believes that the suspended governor is being misled by his inner circle.

According to Wike, “Fubara’s advisers keep telling him not to embrace peace.”

I Made Diri Governor Of Bayelsa, Will Forgive Fubara In One Condition – Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyesom Wike, has asserted that he played a pivotal role in the emergence of Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, insisting that the governor cannot refute his influence in that process.

Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja on Friday, Wike recounted his contribution to Diri’s political rise and also commented on his strained relationship with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his former ally and political protégé.

“Like the governor of Bayelsa, I played a fundamental role; he can’t deny it,” Wike stated during the interview.

He went further to suggest that reconciliation with Fubara is possible, but only if approached with honesty and remorse.

“In sincerity, if anybody comes, it must be in sincerity. The best opportunity was when the President intervened,” he said.

According to Wike, two state governors have approached him in recent times to help mediate the dispute between him and Fubara.

“Two governors came to me, and I said, ‘Look, I am here for peace. What does he want?’ and they said, ‘Look, we will do everything,’” he explained.

Wike also reiterated his support for the state of emergency declared in Rivers by President Bola Tinubu, a move that suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the state assembly, and led to the appointment of a sole administrator.

“As a politician, I am not happy with the declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State. I wanted the outright removal of the governor. But for the interest of the state, the president did the right thing to prevent anarchy in the state,” Wike said.

He emphasized that the governor had already lost political footing before the federal intervention.

“The matter is in court, but people must say the truth. The governor was gone. It is not my place to make it good for the governor. As a politician, my business is not to make him comfortable, and that is why there is a power plane,” he concluded.

Coalition Talks Not Genuine, PDP Unprepared For 2027 – Wike

Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed ongoing discussions about forming a political coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu, describing them as insincere and self-serving.

Speaking in Abuja during a media chat on Friday, Wike accused those promoting the coalition of ignoring internal issues within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s leading opposition party.

“Those who are looking for a coalition are for selfish interests, the likes of Atiku and other people, which coalition, with whom?” he asked.

He criticized party leaders for prioritizing personal ambition over efforts to strengthen the party.

“Why not come in to repair your party? Everybody wants to become president of the country, nobody wants to say, look, let me build our party so that at the end of the day, our party will be in a formidable position as an opposition party to take over power.

“You don’t do that, the only thing you want to do is let me find a way; how I will be the one, and if that does not happen, then it’s to your tent, oh Israel,” Wike added.

This comes as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai are reportedly at the forefront of a coalition plan aimed at unseating President Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

However, Wike insisted the coalition push lacks substance and warned that the PDP risks repeating the same errors that contributed to its loss in 2023.

“You make the mistake yesterday, you want to repeat the same mistake today, tomorrow you make the same mistake, and then you come out to say you were rigged out, who rigged you out? You’ve already rigged yourself by causing crisis,” he stated.

The minister went further to say that the PDP is currently not in shape to contest the 2027 polls.

“The PDP is not ready for the 2027 election. It is very obvious. For instance, I have an examination and I am going to class to read. Indeed, am I reading? Am I studying? You don’t need to deceive anybody that you are reading. You are only trying to read so that people will see that you have carried your bag to class,” he explained.

“That is the situation of the PDP. So, they cannot say for sure that they are ready for 2027. Power struggle cannot help the party,” Wike concluded.

Rivers: Rep Committee Delays Meeting With Sole Administrator

The scheduled interactive session between the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee on Rivers State and the state’s Sole Administrator, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, has been postponed.

The meeting, initially set for Thursday, was aimed at thoroughly examining the administrator’s activities following the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers by President Bola Tinubu.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the committee had earlier extended an invitation to Ibas for this comprehensive engagement.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, House Spokesperson Hon. Akin Rotimi announced the indefinite postponement of the session, explaining that the decision followed a formal request made by the sole administrator.

“In the spirit of transparent and effective oversight, the committee will promptly inform the public once the rescheduled date is confirmed,” Rotimi stated.

The House had earlier constituted a 21-member ad-hoc committee, chaired by Rep. Julius Ihonvbere, tasked with supervising the implementation of emergency rule in the state..

Legal Definition Of Woman Based On Biological Sex – UK Supreme Court Rules

In a landmark ruling, the UK Supreme Court has decided that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex, affirming that the term “woman” under the Equality Act 2010 refers specifically to those born female.

While the ruling has sparked strong reactions from both sides of the gender debate, the Court clarified that transgender individuals remain protected under the law from discrimination based on gender reassignment.

The case, which involved a challenge against the Scottish government’s Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) provisions, centered on whether individuals with a GRC should be entitled to sex-based legal protections.

For Women Scotland, a campaign group advocating for the rights of women born female, argued that such protections should only apply to those assigned female at birth.

The Scottish government, on the other hand, contended that individuals with a GRC should be included in sex-based protections.

Lord Hodge, delivering the ruling, emphasized that while the legal definition of “woman” is grounded in biological sex, the law continues to safeguard the rights of transgender individuals.

He cautioned against interpreting the judgment as a victory for one group over another, highlighting the importance of ensuring fairness for all parties involved.

The ruling has significant implications for how sex-based rights are applied across Scotland, England, and Wales.

It follows a heated political debate in Scotland, where the Scottish Parliament had passed a Gender Recognition Bill to make it easier for individuals to change their legal gender.

However, the UK government blocked the bill, arguing that it would undermine equality laws across Britain, leading to the Supreme Court challenge.

While some campaigners celebrated the decision, the ruling has also sparked concerns within the transgender community.

Scottish Trans, a charity supporting transgender rights, urged people not to panic, emphasizing that transgender people remain protected from discrimination in their gender identity.

Meanwhile, For Women Scotland expressed gratitude for the decision, framing it as a long-awaited win in their ongoing legal battle.

The Scottish government has indicated that it will work with Westminster to fully understand the implications of the ruling and its potential impact on future policies related to gender recognition.

Tinubu Remains At Work Overseas – Presidency Replies Atiku, Obi

Amid mounting insecurity and intensifying criticism from opposition figures, the Presidency has issued a defense of President Bola Tinubu’s extended stay overseas, dismissing accusations that he is neglecting his duties.

The statement emphasized that the president continues to actively govern, despite his near two-week absence.

The President is expected to return after the Easter holidays.

Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, clarified that the president, who had recently traveled from Paris to London, remains engaged in national governance and is in “constant communication with key government officials.”

He also noted that the President has issued directives to security chiefs to address emerging threats in parts of Nigeria, including those in Benue and Plateau states, where the escalation of killings has drawn concern from opposition leaders.

Both Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, who were rivals to Tinubu in the 2023 presidential race, have criticized the President’s prolonged absence and called for his immediate return.

In response, Onanuga assured the public that the President’s absence is temporary and within the two-week timeframe communicated earlier.

“The President left Paris for London at the weekend and has maintained constant communication with key government officials, overseeing critical national matters, including directives to security chiefs to address emerging threats in some parts of the country,” he said.

He added that the President will resume duties at Aso Villa after the Easter break, emphasizing that the administration continues to function effectively.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, expressed appreciation for the Northern Traditional Rulers’ stand against the increasing insecurity in the country.

During the 7th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council in Maiduguri, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, alongside other regional traditional leaders, condemned the persistent killings and violence in the region, highlighting the need for stronger action from both politicians and security forces.

Obi praised the rulers’ courage and their collective stance, stating on his X account: “I would like to sincerely thank the Northern Traditional Rulers for their courageous and timely emergency declaration of the security situation in the region. I cannot agree less with them that ‘Enough is Enough’ regarding the persistent killings and insecurity plaguing our nation.”

He emphasized the importance of working closely with traditional leaders to find lasting solutions to the security issues facing the country.

“The stance of the Northern Traditional Rulers serves as a clarion call to all stakeholders. We must unite, irrespective of political affiliations, to implement lasting solutions that address the root causes of our nation’s challenges,” Obi urged.

Additionally, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) called for a renewed collective effort to tackle insecurity.

In a statement issued during the Easter season, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, CAN’s chairman, highlighted the urgency of addressing the violence, particularly in Plateau and Benue states.

He called for a new strategic approach to security, trauma-healing initiatives, and compensation for victims of violence.

Despite these growing concerns, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, reassured Nigerians that the military remains dedicated to combating terrorism and other security threats.

While acknowledging the recent surge in terrorist attacks, especially in Borno State, Musa reaffirmed the military’s resolve, urging troops to remain focused on their mission.

“The CDS noted that although there was a notable increase in the tempo of attacks, that would not diminish the military efforts in combating the scourge,” a statement from the Defence Headquarters said.

Musa also paid tribute to the fallen military personnel and expressed gratitude for their sacrifices in defending the country.

Teen Who Stood In Front Of Obi’s Convoy Freed After Months In Kirikiri Prison

After months of detention at the Kirikiri correctional facility, 17-year-old Alabi Quadri, who gained attention for standing in front of Peter Obi’s convoy during the 2023 presidential election, has been released.

His freedom came after a legal review from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Dr Babajide Martins, who cleared him of the armed robbery charges that led to his arrest.

Magistrate Adetola Olorunfemi of the Apapa Magistrate’s Court discharged Quadri on Wednesday after the DPP’s legal advice confirmed that there was no credible evidence to support the allegations.

The case against him was officially dismissed.

Quadri was arrested in January under controversial circumstances.

He was allegedly abducted by two self-proclaimed area boys, Lege and Baba Waris, near his home in the Amukoko area of Lagos.

They reportedly handed him over to the police at the Amukoko Divisional Police Headquarters, also known as Pako Police Station.

According to his family, Quadri was returning home from work when he was forcefully taken.

His legal team and relatives assert that the arrest stemmed from resentment among local area boys who were upset because Quadri had not shared the financial gifts he received after going viral during the election season.

Despite being underage, police officials misrepresented Quadri’s age, claiming he was 18, and charged him alongside four adult suspects with no clear connection to him.

These charges included involvement in an armed robbery incident on January 22, 2025.

Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, had earlier defended the arrest, citing testimonies from local residents and victims who identified Quadri as one of the individuals involved in the robbery and disturbance.

However, Quadri’s lawyer, Mr Inibehe Effiong, rejected the charges as unfounded.

In a statement titled “Nigeria has happened to Alabi Quadri,” Effiong condemned the abuse of police authority and the wrongful detention of his client.

Effiong also described difficulties in obtaining the case files and court records from the Apapa Magistrate’s Court, prompting him and Quadri’s family to visit Kirikiri prison, where they learned about the circumstances surrounding the detention.

Effiong explained, “It emerged from the visit that Alabi’s journey to prison began when some self-acclaimed area boys, feeling entitled to a share of the unexpected fortune that came his way as a result of that viral video, started threatening him.”

He added that the Baale (local leader) of the community allegedly pressured the family to appease the area boys by buying a cow and food for them.

The lawyer accused the police of complicity in a conspiracy, stating that they falsely linked Quadri to four unrelated adult suspects and fabricated his age as 18.

He described the arrest as part of a wider scheme to exploit the teenager.

Effiong’s public advocacy, along with support from prison reform advocate Hassana Nurudeen of Ray of Hope Prison Outreach, prompted swift legal action to secure Quadri’s release.

Now free, Effiong is demanding N100 million in compensation from the Nigeria Police Force and an official public apology.

He also called for disciplinary actions against those responsible for the wrongful arrest, particularly the Divisional Police Officer of Amukoko Division and the Investigating Police Officer, Inspector Odigbe Samuel.

“If the above three remedial demands are not fully complied with immediately, we shall initiate legal actions to seek redress,” Effiong warned.

In his statement, Effiong criticized the systemic failures within Nigeria’s justice and policing systems.

“There are many Quadris languishing in detention centres across Nigeria because of the unbridled criminality, lawlessness, and lack of accountability in the Police institution and the weakness of the justice system,” he said.
