Rivers Sole Administrator Slams NBA Over Conference Relocation, Demands N300 Million Refund

The Rivers State Government has voiced its displeasure following the Nigerian Bar Association’s (NBA) decision to move its 2025 Annual General Conference from Port Harcourt to Enugu, calling the reasons provided by the association “misleading, uncharitable, and unbecoming.”

The government is now requesting a refund of ₦300 million already paid to the NBA.

In a statement released on Monday by Hector Igbikiowubo, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the State Administrator, the government acknowledged the NBA’s right to choose a venue but took issue with the insinuation that the current administration was undermining democratic principles.

“The NBA’s statement overlooks the constitutional basis for the current administration in Rivers State.”

“The declaration of a state of emergency was a necessary response to a breakdown of public order and democratic processes,” the government said.

The statement went on to affirm that President Bola Tinubu acted within the limits of his constitutional authority when he imposed the emergency rule in Rivers, describing it as a reaction to the breakdown of democratic governance in the state.

“The Sole Administrator’s mandate is clear: to oversee a transitional period that ensures the return of full democratic governance in line with the Constitution.”

“To suggest that this intervention flouts the rule of law is not only incorrect but ignores the Supreme Court’s rulings that have validated key decisions made during this period,” the statement added.

Referencing legal backing for its position, the government cited the Supreme Court ruling in Suit No. SC/CV/1176/2024 – Rivers State House of Assembly & Others vs. Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) & Nine Others, which declared local government elections held in contravention of the Electoral Act as “unconstitutional, null, and void.”

While defending the ongoing interim leadership, the government emphasized its commitment to democratic restoration, the protection of rights, and adherence to judicial pronouncements.

“It is regrettable that the NBA, as a body of legal minds, would reduce a complex constitutional matter to political sensationalism,” the statement said.

The Rivers government further expressed dismay over what it termed the NBA’s “selective principled stand,” especially in light of the ₦300 million already disbursed for conference hosting arrangements.

“If the NBA truly stands on principle, it should demonstrate the same integrity by promptly returning these funds rather than benefiting from a state it now publicly discredits,” the statement declared.

Concluding, the government encouraged open dialogue and invited the NBA and other stakeholders to support the transitional process.

“The Sole Administrator remains focused on his mandate to stabilize the state and facilitate a smooth return to full constitutional governance. We urge the NBA and other well-meaning Nigerians to support this process in the interest of peace and progress,” the statement concluded.

40 Killed In Renewed Plateau Attack

The wave of violence in Plateau State has continued unabated, as no fewer than 40 people were killed in a fresh attack on the Zike community in Kimakpa, Kwall district of Bassa Local Government Area.

Eyewitnesses say the attack happened in the early hours of Monday, with gunmen storming the village and opening fire indiscriminately on residents who were fleeing after hearing gunshots.

Wakili Tongwe, a Kwall community leader, told Channels Television over the phone that he and a team of vigilantes, alongside some security personnel, were patrolling another community when the incident occurred.

“We were on patrol in a different area when they struck. Before we could return, they had already caused massive damage,” he said.

Security personnel reportedly engaged the assailants and were able to repel them, but not before the attackers had left a trail of bloodshed.

“About thirty-six persons were shot dead instantly, while four others died later,” Tongwe added.

Several other residents sustained gunshot wounds and are receiving treatment at local hospitals.

As at the time of this report, security agencies have not issued a statement regarding the attack.

This latest massacre comes just days after 52 people were killed in attacks on communities in Bokkos Local Government Area of the same state.

Plateau State has long suffered recurring violence, often blamed on tensions between farmers and herders.

However, Governor Caleb Mutfwang believes the scale and pattern of the killings point to something more sinister.

“I can tell you in all honesty that I cannot find any explanation other than genocide sponsored by terrorists. The question is, who are the persons behind the organisers of this terrorism? This is what the security agencies must help us to unravel,” the governor said during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television.

Governor Mutfwang revealed that entire communities have been forcefully taken over by armed groups.

“As I am talking to you, there are not less than 64 communities that have been taken over by bandits on the Plateau between Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, and Riyom local governments,” he said.

“They have been taken over, renamed, and people are living there conveniently on lands they pushed people away to occupy.”

In response to the spate of violence, the Federal Government has pledged to act decisively.

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has “ordered the immediate and comprehensive deployment of police tactical assets to the affected areas of the state”.

Two Killed, 23 Others Injured In Ebonyi Auto Crash

A tragic accident on Sunday at Uduma junction in the Uburu community, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, claimed the lives of a nine-month-old baby and a female adult, leaving 23 others injured.

Eyewitnesses reported that the bus, carrying about 25 passengers including children, lost control while speeding around a sharp bend and collided with another vehicle.

The impact caused the bus to somersault three times, resulting in multiple injuries.

Residents of the area quickly responded, rushing the victims to the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH), Uburu.

Both the infant and the adult woman were declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

In a statement released Monday, DUFUTH Public Relations Officer, Agwụ Nwogo, disclosed that the victims were Ebonyi indigenes residing in Imo State.

They were returning to their base after attending a burial in Okporike, Abakaliki, when the crash occurred.

Nwogo stated that the hospital promptly activated its emergency response system to manage the situation.

“Two were confirmed dead on arrival, while 23 others sustained serious injuries, ranging from crushed hand injuries, fractures, lacerations and severe traumatic brain injuries,” he said.

He added that “as of today, 18 patients, including the driver, are receiving treatment at DUFUTH’s Accident and Emergency department, Surgery Ward, and Intensive Care Unit.”

According to him, “Four patients with minor injuries were stabilized and discharged after receiving treatment.”

However, he noted that an 11-month-old child remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit due to severe traumatic brain injury.

The child is currently on artificial respiration as her condition remains life-threatening.

The hospital expressed deep sorrow over the loss and assured the public that the medical team is doing all within its power to provide optimal care for the injured.

“We Don’t Want Fubara Again, His Suspension Constitutional” – Rivers Women Rally In Support Of Emergency Rule

Tensions surrounding the political crisis in Rivers State deepened on Monday as a coalition of women’s groups took to the streets of Port Harcourt, voicing their support for the state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu.

Dressed in white, the demonstrators marched from Garrison Flyover to the Isaac Boro Park, holding placards bearing messages like “State of Emergency is Constitutional” and “We Don’t Want Fubara.”

Leading the march was Ifeyinwa Aguma, a former Rivers State Commissioner for Social Welfare and a known supporter of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The women endorsed Ibok-Ette Ibas, appointed by Tinubu to administer the state, and urged him to “continue his good work in the state.”

This latest protest follows a separate demonstration held last week by women who backed the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

President Tinubu had announced the emergency rule in March, citing prolonged political instability and referencing “security reports” after two pipeline explosions in the state. According to Tinubu, the action was “inevitably compelling.”

“By this declaration,” Tinubu said, “the Governor of Rivers State, Mr Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the House of Assembly of Rivers State are hereby suspended for an initial period of six months.”

He assigned Ibas to oversee the state’s administration while the crisis is being addressed. The move has triggered heated debate nationwide.

On Monday, the protesting women echoed the president’s justification, describing the measure as grounded in constitutional authority.

However, the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which counts Fubara among its ranks, has pushed back.

Governors from the party have rejected the emergency rule and are currently challenging it in court.

Systemic Dismantling Of Democratic Structures In Rivers Condemnable – HURIWA

Administrator Ibas,

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has voiced strong disapproval over recent actions taken by the interim administrator of Rivers State, retired Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas, accusing him of orchestrating a systematic dismantling of democratic institutions in the state.

In a statement released by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA criticized the administrator for reportedly removing Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s official portraits from public buildings—a move they interpret as a sign of disdain for democratic norms.

“We in HURIWA and about 36 other registered non-governmental organisations reject the unconstitutional overreach and the systematic power grab effort by someone who proudly told us that he served Nigeria for 40 years and was unblemished before he left the military as the nation’s naval chief,” Onwubiko said.

He further urged Ibas to reconsider his role in the unfolding political scenario, appealing to him to uphold his legacy rather than allow it to be tarnished.

“We are, by this media advisory, asking Ibas to preserve his good name and reputation by rejecting his current politically charged assignment that is completely against the spirit, the principle and the essence of the grundnorm. We urge him to stop being used to destroy democracy in Rivers state,” he added.

HURIWA also condemned what it described as a disregard for the judiciary, accusing Ibas of defying an existing order from the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt that prohibits him from appointing unelected council administrators.

“HURIWA strongly condemns this illegal occupant of the position of the administrator of Rivers State who has demonstrated that he is so power hungry and is out for systematic power grab.”

“We condemn, as reprehensible, despicable and unconstitutional, the decision by the sole administrator to make fresh appointments into the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission even when there are electoral commissioners and chairman whose tenure hasn’t elapsed,” the statement read.

In response to the criticisms, Ibas reaffirmed his commitment to neutrality in the state’s political crisis.

Speaking during a meeting with youth leaders and other stakeholders, led by Rivers State Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Nwisabari Bani, the administrator emphasized his dedication to the rule of law.

“It is important to restate my impartial stand on the political crisis that has plagued our State,” Ibas said.

“I remain committed to upholding the law and ensuring that all individuals, irrespective of their political affiliations, have a voice in the future of Rivers State. My administration will continue to focus on the collective good of our people.”

Police Arrest Street-hop Artist, Portable Over Alleged Threats, Defamation

The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of popular street-hop artist, Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, popularly known as Portable, over alleged threats, defamation, and character assassination targeted at Fuji legend, Akorede Babatunde Okunola, widely known as Saheed Osupa.

Portable was picked up by police officers around 7:25 p.m on Saturday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and subsequently transferred to Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, where the case is being handled.

In an official statement signed by the Command’s spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the police said: “Police detectives of Kwara Command have taken lawful steps in line with due process to investigate the allegations.”

According to the police, the arrest followed a petition filed by Saheed Osupa accusing Portable of threatening his life, engaging in criminal defamation, and using abusive language that could incite public disorder.

“Before his arrest, Portable allegedly threatened the life of Saheed Osupa, criminally defamed him, acted in a conduct likely to cause a breach of peace and resorted to the use of abusive and insulting words,” the statement read.

Ejire-Adeyemi further explained that the authorities followed due legal procedure, weighing the evidence submitted alongside the petition and securing a magistrate court-issued warrant to apprehend the singer.

“The Kwara Police spokesperson revealed that Osupa had petitioned the police against Portable, and they swung into action by weighing the allegations, viewing pieces of evidence to support the claim, and securing a valid arrest warrant from a Magistrate Court sitting in Ilorin.”

Upon his arrival in Ilorin, police took Portable’s statement in the presence of legal representatives from both sides.

“Upon his arrival, the suspect’s statement was taken in the presence of legal representatives from both parties. He is currently in custody and arrangements are being made to charge him to court without delay,” Ejire-Adeyemi added.

This incident marks another run-in with the law for Portable in 2025.

Earlier in the year, he was arrested and later granted a N2 million bail following an altercation involving government officials.

At the time, he claimed he was mentally unwell.

2027: ADP Confirms Coalition Talks To Unseat Tinubu, Uzodimma Shrugs Off Alliance

Amid mounting conversations about potential opposition alliances, the Action Democratic Party (ADP) has openly acknowledged efforts to collaborate with other political parties to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC) administration ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking during the launch of three books in Abuja—Tax Tithe in Tight Economy, Optimising VAT for Business Growth and Economic Development, and Murky Waters of Politics—ADP National Chairman, Yabagi Sani, confirmed the discussions.

The books were authored by the party’s national treasurer, Dr. Okey Ude.

Though Sani did not name specific figures involved, he emphasized that the ADP is keen on “ensuring the emergence of leaders that would turn around the fortunes of the country in the 2027 poll.”

He stated, “Yes, collaboration is the thing that gets things done. Even in business, it is not about domination; it is about collaboration. So, we will collaborate with those that we know share in our ideology, in our approaches because this country needs good leadership.”

He added, “So, our party is for good leadership because that is what the country deserves. This country is a promise of greatness, and you have to get great leaders.”

“The great leaders cannot come the way we are going. We must begin to change the system of recruitment of leadership, which means the process of conducting elections have to be changed.”

Dr. Ude, who also served as ADP’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, echoed similar sentiments, stressing Nigeria’s potential for global relevance if led properly.

However, Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Hope Uzodimma, dismissed the opposition’s strategy, describing it as inconsequential. Addressing journalists at a media parley in Lagos, Uzodimma said the APC was unfazed by any coalition attempt.

He argued, “What is a coalition? We are practising partisan democracy, not coalition democracy. Partisan democracy requires belonging to a political party to contest elections. When your party is no longer viable and you seek political oxygen, you must first leave the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) before discussing alliances.”

He continued, “I began by stating that you don’t change a winning team. We have seen where we were, where we are, and where we are headed. Ultimately, Nigerians will decide our fate. But that decision is years away. As a government, we still have over two years remaining in our term.”

On the State of Emergency declared in Rivers State, Uzodimma defended President Tinubu’s move, saying it was necessary to prevent the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara by the state legislature.

“The President, as Chief Security Officer, acted to quell tensions in Rivers. Had the House of Assembly impeached Governor Fubara, it would have set a dangerous precedent. It may be him today, another tomorrow. As a Christian, I believe leadership is divine. It is God who ordains,” he said.

He further explained the broader national interest in supporting the emergency declaration, especially in the context of crude oil production and security.

“When pipelines were bombed, we had to prioritise safeguarding production. As chairman of the National Economic Council’s subcommittee on crude oil theft, our efforts have been on how to boost output, and any actions threatening our quotas must be condemned,” Uzodimma said.

Obi Visits Plateau, Condoles With Victims Of Bokkos Killings, Donates N7.5m

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, paid a condolence visit to Plateau State on Sunday in the wake of the recent killings in Bokkos Local Government Area.

In a statement shared on Monday via his official X account, Obi narrated his journey from Abuja to Jos, the Plateau State capital, to commiserate with Governor Caleb Mutfwang and the people of the state.

“Yesterday, I travelled from Abuja to Jos, Plateau State, to condole with and show solidarity with Governor Caleb Mutfwang and the people of Plateau State over the recent senseless killings in the Bokkos area of the state,” he said.

Following his stop in Jos, Obi proceeded to Bokkos, where he met with victims of the attacks, including displaced children and other members of the affected communities.

He decried the level of destruction he witnessed and emphasized the injustice of such violence in a country not officially at war.

“What has happened in these communities is very saddening and utterly unacceptable. Nigerians should not be killed or forced to flee their homes when we are not at war. Every life is precious, and no Nigerian, regardless of where they live, should have to live in fear or uncertainty,” he stated.

Expressing his condolences, Obi added, “My deepest condolences go to the families and communities who have suffered tragic losses. No words can truly capture the pain and devastation that such senseless violence brings.”

He also highlighted the ongoing efforts by the Obidient Movement to support the victims. According to him, the group had previously provided a borehole to supply clean water to the internally displaced persons (IDP) camp and the host community.

“Earlier, the Obidient Movement had built a borehole to provide clean water for the IDP camp and the community, and we continued the support yesterday with the sum of 7.5 million naira to help in providing facilities for the displaced children, provide continuous education and on going needs of those affected,” Obi said.

In his message of hope and solidarity, he called for leadership rooted in compassion and accountability.

“Now, more than ever, leadership and compassion are essential. I stand in solidarity with Plateau State and remain committed to supporting all efforts toward peace, justice, and healing,” he said.

“May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace, and may the people find strength, comfort, and unity as they rebuild their lives,” Obi concluded.

FG Commits N777bn To Complete Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road

The Federal Government has announced a fresh commitment of N777 billion for the completion of the long-delayed Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano highway project.

The disclosure was made on Sunday by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, during the flag-off ceremony for section two of the project.

According to Umahi, the 700-kilometre road, which has faced numerous setbacks and cost escalations since it was awarded in 2018, is now set for completion with a renewed timeline and new contractors.

“The company is trusted and has the competence to do the work. The concrete road has commenced; I have seen the quality and have no regret in recommending them to do this work. And we had sections one, two, and three. Section one is in Abuja, Nigeria, and Section three is in Kano.”

“Substantially, the Kano section between Zaria and Kano has been completed by Julius Berger. And so the entire road, 350 kilometres, was the 240 kilometres completed by Julius Berger,” Umahi explained.

Originally awarded to Julius Berger at a cost below N155.7 billion and scheduled for completion within 36 months, the road project’s budget eventually soared to over N600 billion. Despite this, less than half of the road had been delivered over six years.

The contract was later terminated as the government insisted on paying only N740 billion of the contractor’s revised N1.5 trillion valuation.

In the latest phase, Umahi revealed that Infiouest Construction Company has been assigned to handle section two of the project at N525 billion, with a 14-month completion target.

He also announced that sections one and three, totaling 118 kilometres, have been awarded for N252 billion, with 30 percent already disbursed to the contractor.

“The president is not only completing this 280. He has also added about 11 kilometres at the Kano section of the road to take the road to the Aminu Kano International Airport. And that work is going on now. Together with the remaining section in Kano State,” Umahi added.

He further stated, “The entire road – the president also directed that there should be solar lights throughout. And so today, the President has awarded the completion of sections 1 and 3, a total of 118 kilometres for a total sum of N252bn.”

Praising Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State for his role in pushing for the project, Umahi said, “You have gotten close to a trillion to complete this road; you are a very smart governor; I know the president trusts you in his heart, so you have to give me the magic so that I will tell the governors of the South-East to adopt your style.”

“This 700 kilometres of roads will be completed under you, courtesy of our dear president. Not only will it be completed, but it will be completed in concrete reinforced pavements,” he added.

Umahi also applauded the governor’s inclusive governance approach and security collaboration with the National Security Adviser (NSA), stating that “residents sleep with two eyes closed.”

Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the event, Governor Uba Sani highlighted the economic and social significance of the road, calling it a “vital artery for the people of Northern Nigeria.”

“We are here to commence the reconstruction of one of the most important roads in Nigeria. The Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road is a vital artery for the people of Northern Nigeria,” he said.

Reflecting on his advocacy as a senator, Sani said, “I must point out here that it has been a long struggle pulling off today’s event. As a senator representing Kaduna Central in the 9th Senate, I mobilised other federal legislators and key stakeholders to pile ceaseless pressure on the federal government to complete this important road.”

“We even organised a town hall meeting to collate and synthesise the views of stakeholders and ramp up pressure for action to be taken on the vital project.”

The governor lauded President Tinubu’s focus on infrastructure, saying, “Let me state here without fear of contradiction that in words and action, President Tinubu has demonstrated commitment to addressing the infrastructural deficits in the Northern region of Nigeria.”

He stressed that the road project would not only improve security but also drive economic growth and job creation.

“It will also bolster security in the surrounding areas, ushering in a new wave of positive change for our people. As we embark on the reconstruction of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Federal Road, it is important to highlight that both direct and indirect jobs will be created, providing a tremendous boost to our local economies.”

“I urge all communities that will benefit from this road project to extend their full cooperation to the contractors. Your collaboration is essential for the swift and successful completion of this vital infrastructure,” he concluded.

The flag-off ceremony was attended by prominent figures including former Kaduna State Governor Ramadan Yero, and former Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, among others.

Adeleke Orders Police To Halt Illegal Taxation By Reinstated APC Council Chairmen

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has instructed the Commissioner of Police to urgently put an end to what he described as the illegal imposition of taxes by recently reinstated local government chairmen under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The directive, issued on Sunday, follows reports of unauthorized tax collection and alleged forgery of official council documents by the APC-affiliated chairmen, particularly in Boripe Local Council.

According to a statement released by the governor’s spokesperson, Rasheed Olawale, Adeleke emphasized that these actions threaten peace and order at the grassroots.

He said the commissioner should invite the implicated chairmen for questioning over their roles in the use of fake documents to collect revenue unlawfully from market operators.

“This should stop forthwith,” the statement read, quoting Adeleke’s stern warning.

“Is this the reason for illegal occupation of council secretariats? Is this all about extorting the people and imposing pain and suffering on them?” the governor asked.

He added that the activities not only violate legal provisions but also undermine the judicial process, especially given that the APC has an active appeal regarding the removal of its chairmen.

“This development is capable of jeopardising the sustenance of law and order at the grassroots level,” the statement noted.

Governor Adeleke also directed his Special Adviser on Security to coordinate with the police chief to enforce the new order.

He expressed dismay at what he called “the brazen imposition of hardship and pains on the people through illegal revenue and tax collections.”
