Palm Sunday: CAN Urges Humility, Love As Christians March Across Globe

As Christians across the globe observed Palm Sunday, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kwara State called on Nigerian leaders to embrace humility in service.

Speaking during a procession in Ilorin, the state capital, CAN Chairman Bishop Sunday Adewole urged leaders to reflect on the values of Jesus Christ, whose triumphant entry into Jerusalem is commemorated on Palm Sunday.

“Jesus rode on a colt to teach us humility and service. As Christians and Nigerians, we must be humble, embrace peace and show love to our neighbours. This is the only way we can build a better society,” Adewole stated.

Thousands of worshippers from different denominations gathered for the peaceful celebration, waving palm fronds and singing “Hosanna.”

The procession, which began around 8:45 am from Saint Barnabas Cathedral in Sabo-Oke, snaked through major roads including Muritala Way, Maraba, Ipata, Taiwo, and Unity Road, before returning to the cathedral for prayers.

Another group commenced their walk from First Baptist Church, Surulere, and merged with the main crowd at Unity Junction, showcasing a strong display of Christian unity.

During the event, Adewole highlighted the need for both Christians and public office holders to live by Christ’s example of selfless service and compassion.

“Jesus Christ riding on a donkey signifies humbleness which all leaders should emulate,” he said.

The CAN State Vice Chairman, Pastor Ademola Popoola, also addressed the crowd, stressing the importance of spiritual reflection during Holy Week.

“Jesus gave His life to redeem us. We must live holy lives and draw nearer to God with humility,” Popoola advised.

Palm Sunday, which ushers in the Holy Week, holds deep significance in Christian tradition, culminating in the Easter celebration.

In Ilorin, the procession moved peacefully from St. Barnabas Sabo-Oke through Kulende, Amilengbe, Opo Malu, Emirs Road, Taiwo Oke, Unity, Challenge, Post Office, and back to St. Barnabas Church.

Governor Zulum Donates House, Scholarship To Assaulted IDP Boy In Viral Video

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has offered a fully furnished home and a comprehensive educational scholarship to Bashir Gaji, a young boy seen being assaulted in a viral video that drew nationwide outrage.

The governor made this announcement on Sunday while receiving the boy at the Government House in Maiduguri.

The video that circulated widely showed one Bukar Modu severely beating Gaji, an internally displaced person (IDP) in Monguno whose father was reportedly killed by Boko Haram.

Acting on the governor’s order, security agents tracked down and arrested Bukar Modu on Saturday night at Umarari in Maiduguri.

Speaking on the incident, Zulum condemned the abuse and stressed that such acts are unacceptable.

“This heinous act is an affront on our values and a betrayal of our duty to protect our children, students and minors who are under our guardianship. We cannot tolerate such actions perpetually repeating itself.”

“I am directing the relevant authorities to move swiftly and ensure that this individual faces the full extent of the law. Our children deserve a safe environment to grow and become meaningful members of society,” he said.

Governor Zulum emphasized his administration’s commitment to child protection and tasked the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development to intensify community education.

He directed them to “devise modalities for increased community awareness programmes to educate families and local traditional teachers and guardians on the proper means of enforcing discipline on children.”

Anambra Man Murders 68 Year-Old Mother Over Money

Police in Anambra State have arrested a 49-year-old man, Nnamdi Anyaji, for allegedly killing his mother, Dorathy Anyaji, during a dispute over proceeds from a cassava business.

The tragic incident occurred in Amudo Village, Ekwulobia, in Aguata Local Government Area.

After the act, Nnamdi reportedly tried to take his own life but was restrained by neighbors who arrived in time to stop him. He was subsequently arrested.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, Anambra State Police spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga said, “Police operatives attached to the Ekwulobia Divisional Police Station on April 11, 2025 by 1.40pm, arrested one Nnamdi Anyaji ‘M’ aged 49 years of Amudo Village, Ekwulobia who attempted to take his own life after killing his mother Mrs Dorathy Anyaji of the same address aged 68 years.”

Ikenga also stated that an axe was recovered at the scene of the crime.

“The operatives also recovered one Axe at the scene. Preliminary information revealed that the squabble started when the suspect accused the deceased of being dishonest about the money realised from a cassava business.”

He added that the suspect is being held in custody and placed under close watch to prevent another suicide attempt.

“Meanwhile, the suspect is in custody and under close monitoring so as not to commit suicide and would be charged to court after the investigation.”

In a separate operation, police raided a drug camp in Umuokpala Village, Orumba North Local Government Area, arresting 12 suspects in connection with illicit drug activities.

According to Ikenga, “The police operatives attached to the Special Anti-Cultism Squad, Enugu-Ukwu in the early hours of April 11, acting on credible information raided a criminal drugs camp at Umuokpala Village in Orumba North LGA, arrested 12 suspects selling and taking hard drugs, recovered some sizeable quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, illicit drugs and other implicating items.”

“The suspects have been handed over to Operatives of Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for necessary action,” he said.

Fresh Leadership Crisis Hits Labour Party, Eyes Turn To INEC

The Labour Party’s prospect in the upcoming November 2025 Anambra State governorship election appear increasingly unstable, following renewed leadership disputes that have emerged in the wake of the Supreme Court judgment.

While many party members had hoped the apex court judgment would bring lasting resolution to the prolonged internal crisis, fresh interpretations of the judgment have triggered new claims to the party’s leadership.

This has reignited tensions and deepened existing divisions.

Sources close to the party told DAILY GAZETTE that influential stakeholders—including the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor Alex Otti—have rallied behind the Senator Esther Nenadi Usman-led Labour Party National Caretaker Committee (LP-NCC).

However, Comrade Julius Abure’s National Working Committee (NWC) remains defiant and insists on continuing its leadership.

Adding another layer of complexity, the party’s Deputy National Chairman (South), Alhaji Lamidi Apapa, has resurfaced, declaring himself the new National Chairman.

He argues that the Supreme Court judgment effectively created a leadership vacuum.

Citing the party’s constitution, Apapa claims that in the event of a chairman’s incapacitation, removal, resignation, or death, the deputy is constitutionally empowered to take over.

This leadership turmoil has left many party supporters—especially those aligned with Chief George Muoghalu—in a state of uncertainty.

Muoghalu, a former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), was declared winner of the governorship primary conducted by the Abure-led faction, polling 573 votes.

However, another faction within the party conducted a separate primary, which produced Jude Umenajiego, a sitting member of the Anambra State House of Assembly representing Onitsha South II, as its candidate. Umenajiego secured 180 votes, while his opponent, John Nwosu, received 69.

With the emergence of two candidates, the focus has now shifted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), where both factions are seeking official recognition.

Reacting to the controversy, Obiora Ifoh, spokesperson for the Abure-led NWC, dismissed the parallel primary as illegitimate.

He stated: “For the benefit of doubt, the Labour Party has since concluded its governorship primary in Anambra State and the name of the successful candidate has already been submitted to the INEC in line with the election guidelines.”

“We are, therefore, disassociating the party from any other or outcome of any primaries as the party has moved on, waiting for the right time to flag off our campaigns.”

Meanwhile, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, the National Secretary of the LP-NCC, condemned the primary that produced Muoghalu, describing it as illegal.

According to him, the Nenadi Usman-led committee would soon provide clarity and direction to party supporters in Anambra.

Soyinka Demands Reversal Of NBC Ban On Eedris Abdulkareem’s Song

Renowned Nigerian writer and Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has called for the immediate reversal of the ban placed on Eedris Abdulkareem’s latest song, describing the move as a threat to artistic freedom and freedom of expression in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) recently prohibited radio and TV stations from airing Abdulkareem’s new release, Tell Your Papa, which takes a critical stance on the country’s economic woes and directly addresses President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi.

The track follows in the footsteps of Abdulkareem’s earlier hit Jaga Jaga, which had taken aim at former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The NBC cited the “objectionable nature” of the song as grounds for its ban, triggering backlash from many Nigerians.

Reacting to the development in a statement issued from New York University, Abu Dhabi, Professor Soyinka condemned the decision as a dangerous return to censorship and political suppression.

“Courtesy of an artist operating in a different genre – the cartoon – who sent me his recent graphic comment on the event, I learnt recently of a return to the culture of censorship with the banning of the product of a music artist, Eedris Abdulkareem,” he stated.

Soyinka, with characteristic irony, went further: “My position is that such a progressive move by the government and its agencies does not go far enough. It is not only the allegedly offensive record that should be banned – the musician himself should be proscribed.”

“Next, PMAN, or whatever musical association of which Abdulkareem is member, should also go under the hammer. Nor should we ignore the cartoonist, Ebun Aleshinloye, who not only etched out his trenchant response to the ban but disseminated it all the way to Abu Dhabi. Let’s simply go the whole hog!”

Even though he admitted to not having heard the song yet, Soyinka stood firmly on principle.

“I have yet to listen to the record, but the principle is inflexibly etched on any democratic template. It cannot be flouted. That, surely is basic.”

He praised the cartoonist Aleshinloye for his satirical response, describing such art as “an easy to apprehend, easy to digest summation of the wisdom of attempting to stifle unpalatable works of art or socio-political commentary.”

“The ban is a boost to the artist’s nest egg, thanks to free governmental promotion. Mr. Abdulkareem must be currently warbling his merry way all the way to the bank. I envy him,” Soyinka quipped.

Expressing frustration at Nigeria’s repeated cycle of censorship and suppression, he said: “We have been through this before, over and over again, ad nauseum. We know where it all ends. It is boring, time-wasting, diversionary but most essential of all, subversive of all seizure of the fundamental right of free expression.”

He also warned that such government behavior encourages abuse of power across various levels of authority.

“It also creates a permissive atmosphere of trickle-down power where governors have been known to pursue social critics across state borders, kidnap and imprison them for long spells, using the judicial machinery of never-ending trials.”

Addressing broader dangers to free expression in Nigeria, he continued: “Oh, bear in mind also theocratic ‘authorities’ that continue to arrogate to themselves the right to arrest and imprison artists and thinkers for their expression of opinion and vision of human existence”.

“The fundamental right of free expression, as already touched upon, is not a closet affair, it is never hidden but echoes as loudly on international fora as in the most obscure hamlet.”

Soyinka concluded with a warning: “Any government that is tolerant only of yes-men and women, which accommodate only praise-singers and dancers to the official beat, has already commenced a downhill slide into the abyss. Whatever regulating body is responsible for this petulant irrationality should be compelled to reverse its misstep.”

The playwright also reacted to recent mob killings in Edo State, where 19 people reportedly lost their lives, comparing the horror to the killing of student Deborah Samuel in Sokoto in 2022.

“It is a sadly opportune moment, but also an enraged one, to join in conveying my commiseration to the families of the latest victims of the lynch mob mentality that is fast overtaking the nation. Edo today, which state next? Nineteen youths in one fell swoop?”

Soyinka condemned the impunity surrounding such incidents.

“Let this latest dent in the national armour not pass as the yet soul searing orgy that ended the life of the young student, Deborah Samuel.

Recall that identified killers were set free to gloat, and paste their photos on the social media as having lit the consuming pyre – this in full daylight glare, in the presence of both citizen voyeurs and security forces. The horror is not in numbers but in the act itself.”

He urged Nigerians not to remain silent: “As long as the culture of impunity is given the sheerest strain of legitimacy in any given cause, such gruesome assaults on our common humanity will continue to prevail, and a reversion to brutish existence become a nation’s stamp of identity.”

“The culprits are in plain sight and so are witnesses. There can be no excuses. My heart goes out to friends, colleagues and families of victims and traumatized survivors of this senseless slaughter. Our thirst for justice must remain unslaked.”

US Court Orders FBI, DEA To Release Records On President Tinubu

A United States District Court in Washington, D.C., has directed key law enforcement bodies — the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) — to release information concerning President Bola Tinubu.

The order was issued by Judge Beryl Howell on Tuesday, following a motion by American activist Aaron Greenspan, who sought a review of a prior decision.

According to the report by Premium Times, Howell dismissed the rationale behind the agencies’ refusal to disclose the documents, stating that shielding the information from the public is “neither logical nor plausible.”

Greenspan had taken legal action against the agencies, accusing them of violating the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) by not releasing documents “relating to purported federal investigations into” Tinubu and another individual, Abiodun Agbele, within the required timeframe.

In 1993, Tinubu was reported to have forfeited $460,000 to the US government after the funds were linked to alleged narcotics trafficking.

This forfeiture resurfaced during the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal when Tinubu’s eligibility for the 2023 presidential election was contested by Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.

The court, however, ruled in Tinubu’s favor and upheld his election.

On Tuesday, Judge Howell ruled partially in support of Greenspan. She determined that the FBI and DEA’s use of the so-called ‘Glomar’ response — refusing to confirm or deny the existence of records — was “improper and must be lifted.”

The judge said the agencies had not justified their claim to such a response under the FOIA framework.

She wrote: “The claim that the Glomar responses were necessary to protect this information from public disclosure is at this point neither logical nor plausible.”

The judge further explained that a FOIA requester may challenge a Glomar response by either questioning the agency’s assertion that acknowledging records would cause harm under a FOIA exemption or by showing that the agency “has ‘officially acknowledged otherwise exempt information through prior disclosure”, thereby forfeiting the exemption.

In Greenspan’s case, Judge Howell noted that he made both arguments. According to her: “The plaintiffs’ argument that (1) DEA has officially confirmed investigations of Agbele’s involvement in the drug trafficking ring, (2) the FBI and DEA have both officially confirmed investigations of Tinubu relating to the drug trafficking ring, (3) any privacy interests implicated by the FOIA requests to the FBI and DEA for records about Tinubu are overcome by the public interest in release of such information, and (4) the CIA has officially acknowledged records responsive to plaintiff’s FOIA request about Tinubu.”

Another Group Of Hunters Arrested In Edo For Possessing Firearms

Four hunters from Kano State have been apprehended in Edo for possessing firearms. The suspects – Yusuf Abdulkarim, Mujaheed Garba, Shittu Idris, and Jamilu Habibu – were arrested at the Americanus Hotel on Osemwenkhae Street after being intercepted at Big Joe Motors in Ramat Park, Orogbeni Quarters, and subsequently handed over to the police.

The Edo State Police Command confirmed the arrest, noting that the suspects were found with guns.

The hunters were captured in Ramat, Ikpoba Hill area of Benin by the Edo State Security Corps, who discovered cutlasses hidden in their bags.

CSP Moses Yamu, the police spokesperson, clarified that the arrested individuals were hunters, not herdsmen, as some social media reports had suggested.

“They were intercepted by a member of the Edo Security Network with three dane guns, six empty cartridges, three half-filled cartridges, four cutlasses, and two daggers,” Yamu explained.

The suspects, who are from Doguwa in Kano State, were reportedly en route to Uvbe Community in the Orhionwon Local Government Area of Edo State.

The police from the Ikpoba Hill Police Station are currently interrogating them.

The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, urged the public to avoid spreading false information that could create unnecessary tension.

This incident follows the tragic killing of 16 hunters from Kano, who were killed in Uromi, Edo State, while traveling for the Sallah holidays.

The killings sparked widespread outrage across the country.
