Police Officer Threatens Retaliation Against Southerners Over Uromi Killings

A police officer from Kaduna State, Hadaina Hussaini Dan-Taki, has issued a threat of retaliation against southerners living in northern Nigeria following the brutal killings of 16 northerners in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

Dan-Taki’s comments, made on Facebook on Tuesday, were in response to the attack, and he vowed that northerners would take decisive action against southerners.

In a passionate post, he wrote, “I swear to Almighty God, we must do something for you guys, have you forgotten all your brothers that are leaving here in the North? Make my word, after one week you shall see the result.”

The police officer’s remarks attracted immediate backlash, leading him to alter his Facebook profile.

He changed his first name and restricted access to his posts, limiting the visibility of his comments.

One X (formerly Twitter) user, Uche, shared a screenshot of Dan-Taki’s threatening post and tagged Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi, urging action.

The tweet read, “#Princemoye1, take care of this sir.”

Adejobi responded promptly, acknowledging the matter, saying, “Noted for necessary action. Thanks.”

Meanwhile, the investigation into the tragic killing of the 16 northerners continues, with 14 suspects arrested in connection with the crime.

The suspects were transferred to Abuja for further questioning, as confirmed by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo.

The attack took place last Thursday when a group of northern hunters, traveling to Kano for Sallah celebrations, were ambushed by a mob.

Their vehicle was looted, and firearms were discovered before they were killed. The killings sparked outrage across the country, with widespread calls for swift justice.

Governor Okpebholo condemned the attack, calling it “unacceptable” and pledging that those responsible would be brought to justice.

2027: Peter Obi In Talks To Join SDP, Says Former Presidential Candidate

Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, revealed on Sunday that Labour Party’s Peter Obi is in discussions to join the SDP, following in the footsteps of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

Adebayo shared this information during his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

In recent months, Obi’s interactions with opposition figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have sparked speculation about his political allegiance, with many Nigerians questioning whether he is leaving the Labour Party.

However, Obi has consistently reiterated that he remains a member of the Labour Party.

Adebayo, however, asserted on Sunday that he had reliable information indicating that Obi was set to join the SDP.

He stated, “People are joining my party, and we are welcoming them. You can see how active I am in welcoming them.”

“The only little issue we have with some of them is changing the culture where, if you have not been in an environment where rules are taken seriously, some of them have been engaged in ‘Boy Scouts,’ black market operations, but we are dealing with that. But we welcome them into the party.”

The SDP candidate further added, “All these people you have mentioned—El-Rufai, Atiku Abubakar, even former Governor Peter Obi—are coming. A lot of people are coming, and we will welcome them.”

When asked to clarify if Obi was indeed joining the SDP, Adebayo hesitated, but confirmed that he had been reliably informed.

He explained, “Supposedly, until somebody joins, we don’t know. But people have told me, and the Financial Secretary of the SDP has also informed me that they are talking. So we will welcome everybody.”

Adebayo continued, “Surely, when we come in, and we don’t become a tower of Babel; if we come in, follow the rules, and allow one person to emerge transparently, clearly, without cheating, without criminality, the way we did our convention in 2022, people applauded us. No court case, no crisis, no allegations.”

He concluded, “If they can stick to our culture and follow the way we do in the SDP and produce a good alternative to Nigerians, we are going to manifestly defeat the APC and retire President Tinubu to Lagos or wherever he chooses in Nigeria.”

FG Orders Closure Of Waterway Due To Eko Bridge Damage

Works Minister, Umahi,

The Federal Government has ordered the immediate closure of the waterway between Eko Bridge and Carter Bridge following significant damage caused to Eko Bridge by dredging activities.

The Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, made the announcement during an inspection tour of various bridges in Lagos State.

Umahi called on Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to enforce the closure to prevent any further accidents.

“The dredger that hit the pier cap caused the pier to tumble and sink,” the minister explained.

He confirmed that the dredger’s driver or its owner had been arrested, emphasizing that the Federal Government would take decisive action due to the extent of the damage.

“I also observed a concerning amount of dredging near the Third Mainland Bridge, despite the Federal Executive Council’s ban on dredging within a 10-kilometer radius of all bridges in Nigeria, which was imposed four months ago,” Umahi remarked.

“I am shocked that dredging is still taking place.”

The minister stressed that dredging activities near bridges posed a threat to their structural integrity.

Umahi also appealed to the public to avoid parking or loading on bridges, highlighting the need to protect both the lives of Nigerians and the country’s road infrastructure.

Declare State Of Emergency In Plateau, Other Terror-Prone States, Arewa Forum Urges Tinubu

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has called on the Federal Government to declare a state of security emergency in states plagued by terrorism, particularly urging an immediate end to the killings in Plateau State.

In a statement released on Sunday, the ACF emphasized that it was crucial for the Federal Government to restore peace and normalcy in terror-stricken states by declaring a state of security emergency in those regions.

The forum also condemned the recent attacks in Plateau State, which occurred on March 28, 2025, when terror gangs killed numerous individuals, including children.

The group expressed deep sadness over the ongoing violence, stating that the death toll, injuries, and property damage caused by the actions of bandits should not be ignored.

Professor Tukur Muhammad-Baba, National Publicity Secretary of the ACF, stated, “The ACF deeply mourns the dead and unequivocally condemns the attacks. The Forum particularly extends sympathy and condolence to the affected communities, the Government, and the people of Plateau State.”

He added, “We identify with the deep pains of the families of the victims, and we pray for the deceased to rest in peace. We also pray for strength for the surviving victims to bear their losses and for those injured to recover swiftly.”

The ACF reiterated that it is the responsibility of the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) to protect the lives and properties of citizens.

“We wish to draw attention, once again, to the worsening security situation in Arewa communities and across Nigeria,” said Muhammad-Baba.

“The people are in great pain, compounded by severe economic challenges. The killing spree in Plateau must stop immediately, and peace must return to the state.”

In its call for action, the ACF urged the FGN to declare a state of security emergency in vulnerable, banditry-prone communities and to implement early-warning and early-response measures involving local community members.

The forum also called for greater intelligence gathering by security agencies to understand and address the root causes of the recent violence.

Furthermore, the ACF urged the government to take immediate action against the perpetrators of the attacks.

“The FGN should investigate, identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible for the attacks and their enablers,” the statement said. “Families who have lost loved ones should receive compensation, and those injured should be provided relief.”

The ACF also called on both the Federal Government and Plateau State Government to empower community leaders, including clergy, traditional leaders, and civil society organizations, to promote dialogue and cooperation for conflict resolution and reconciliation.

“Citizens must cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information on insurgents and criminals. Members of the National Assembly must do more to hold the FGN and security agencies accountable and demand concrete actions to address the ongoing terror,” the statement added.

While reaffirming its full support for the Federal Government, Plateau State Government, and all national security agencies in their efforts to combat insecurity, the ACF urged all parties involved to intensify their efforts to safeguard the well-being of Nigerians.

Shelve Planned Nationwide Protest – Police Warn Organizers

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a stern caution regarding a planned nationwide protest by a group called the “Take it Back Movement,” which is set to take place on Monday, April 7th, 2025.

This protest coincides with the Federal Government’s declaration of National Police Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the resilience, dedication, and contributions of the officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to national security.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the force expressed its concerns about the timing of the protest, particularly given that National Police Day is meant to honor the police force and its role in maintaining security in the country.

The day is expected to bring together dignitaries from both within Nigeria and internationally, including foreign inspectors-general of police and diplomats.

While the Nigeria Police Force acknowledged the right of citizens to peacefully assemble and protest as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution, the NPF emphasized that the planned protest on the same day as National Police Day was not only ill-timed but could also be perceived as a deliberate attempt to undermine the image and reputation of the police force and tarnish the national celebration.

The NPF further expressed concern that the protest, scheduled to coincide with such an important event, could distract from the positive recognition of the police force’s contributions to national security.

The police also urged that any grievances or demands should be addressed through dialogue and engagement with the appropriate government institutions, rather than through public demonstrations on such a sensitive and symbolic day.

The statement also reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, to continue fulfilling its duties in accordance with the law, while respecting the rights of citizens.

“The Nigeria Police Force hereby advises the organizers to shelve this planned protest as it is ill-timed and mischievous,” the statement read, urging those planning to participate in the protest to consider pursuing peaceful dialogue instead.

The Police affirmed its ongoing commitment to serve and protect the Nigerian people, reinforcing the importance of respect for the rule of law and national unity.

It noted that the police remain dedicated to fulfilling their duties in line with best global practices and the law.

Abure-Led Labour Party Warns Against Planned Invasion Of Party Secretariat

The leadership of the Labour Party has issued a stern warning in response to plans by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to invade the party’s National Secretariat.

According to the national secretary of the party, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the NLC, in collaboration with the illegal Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee (NCC) and the National Transition Committee (NTC), is mobilizing members, hired thugs, and other miscreants to execute the planned invasion starting Monday, April 7, 2025.

The Labour Party claims that the invasion, allegedly funded by the Abia State government and another prominent leader within the party, intends to unlawfully break into the party’s national headquarters, seize sensitive documents, and vandalize party property.

This action, the party says, would not only violate the law but also disrupt the peace of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“This planned invasion is not just reckless, but a desperate attempt by the NLC to undermine the Labour Party,”

He further highlighted the contradiction between the NLC’s actions and its role as a labour union, which, by law, is prohibited from engaging in partisan politics.

Ibrahim pointed to past incidents where miscreants were mobilized to desecrate the party’s headquarters and damage its property.

The Labour Party emphasized that the Supreme Court ruling of April 5, 2025, is clear on the matter.

The judgment, they said, unequivocally mandates political parties to resolve internal leadership issues within their own structures, and no external entity, including the NLC or any caretaker committee, has the authority to interfere in such matters.

The Labour Party’s leadership, under Barrister Julius Abure, who was validly elected in March 2024, remains intact, the statement stressed.

The party made it clear that any attempt to forcibly take over the leadership will be met with strong resistance.

The Party called on security agencies, including the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS), to ensure that such unlawful actions are swiftly stopped.

They further urged that those behind the planned invasion, no matter how influential they might be, should be apprehended and face the full force of the law.

“Any activity that threatens the peace of the FCT must be nipped in the bud.” the statement added.

Tens Of Thousands Protest Across US Against Trump’s ‘Devastation’

Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets in major US cities on Saturday, rallying against President Donald Trump’s controversial policies, marking the largest demonstrations since his return to the White House.

Demonstrators, critical of Trump’s administration, rallied in cities including Washington, New York, Houston, Florida, Colorado, and Los Angeles.

They voiced opposition to policies ranging from government staffing cuts to trade tariffs and what they see as the erosion of civil liberties.

“I am so angry, I’m so mad, all the time, yes. A bunch of privileged, white alleged rapists are controlling our country. It’s not great,” said 43-year-old New York painter Shaina Kesner, who was among the crowd marching through Manhattan.

In Washington, thousands of demonstrators gathered at the National Mall, with many traveling from across the country.

Diane Kolifrath, a 64-year-old bike tour guide from New Hampshire, said, “We have about 100 people who have come down by bus and van from New Hampshire to protest against this outrageous administration (that) is causing us to lose our allies across the world, and causing devastation to people here at home. They’re gutting our government.”

In Los Angeles, a protester dressed as a character from the dystopian novel “The Handmaid’s Tale” waved a large flag reading, “Get out of my uterus,” in reference to Trump’s anti-abortion policies.

A protester in Denver, Colorado, held a placard that read “No king for USA,” symbolizing growing frustrations with Trump’s leadership.

Protests also reached European cities, where demonstrators voiced their opposition to Trump’s policies.

Liz Chamberlin, a dual US-British citizen at a London rally, said, “What’s happening in America is everyone’s problem. It’s economic lunacy… He is going to push us into a global recession.”

In Berlin, Susanne Fest, a 70-year-old retiree, criticized Trump’s actions, saying, “The guy is a lunatic,” and claimed he had created “a constitutional crisis.”

In the US, a coalition of left-leaning groups, including MoveOn and Women’s March, organized “Hands Off” events in more than 1,000 cities and every congressional district.

Many Americans are upset by Trump’s aggressive moves to downsize the government, impose conservative values, and apply intense pressure on foreign countries over issues like borders and trade.

These actions have also led to a decline in stock markets.

“We’re out here to stop the, honestly, fascism,” protester Dominic Santella said in Boston.

“We’re stopping a leader from… jailing his opponents, stopping him from jailing just random people, immigrants.”

The protests also reflected frustration with the Democratic Party, which, despite being in the minority in Congress, has appeared powerless to resist Trump’s agenda.

Representative Jamie Raskin, a Democrat and impeachment manager during Trump’s second impeachment, addressed the crowd at the National Mall, saying, “No moral person wants an economy-crashing dictator who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.”

At the rally, 71-year-old activist Graylan Hagler vowed, “They’ve woken up a sleeping giant, and they haven’t seen nothing yet. We will not sit down, we will not be quiet, and we will not go away.”

Saturday’s protests were mostly peaceful, with a positive atmosphere, particularly in Washington, where a wide range of people, including elderly protesters and young couples with infants, took part.

Organizers had expected 20,000 participants in Washington, but by the afternoon, they acknowledged the turnout was much larger.

The protests come as Trump’s approval rating continues to drop to its lowest point since taking office, according to recent polling. Despite the growing pushback, the White House has dismissed the protests, with Trump stating, “My policies will never change.”

Despite widespread global criticism and growing domestic discontent, Trump remains popular with his base and shows no signs of backing down.

JAMB Extends Direct Entry Registration Deadline

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced an extension to the registration period for the 2025 Direct Entry (DE) examination, surpassing the previously set deadline of Monday, April 7, 2025.

JAMB made the announcement on Sunday through a statement from its spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin.

The registration, which commenced on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, will remain open until further notice, according to the board.

JAMB urged candidates wishing to register to visit any of the Board’s designated Professional Registration Centres (PRCs) starting Monday, and continue until the official closing date is confirmed.

The extension comes amid ongoing investigations into candidates suspected of submitting fraudulent A-Level results during the registration process.

In its statement, JAMB explained that it has put in place measures to detect individuals using such fraudulent credentials.

The board also called on candidates who have previously submitted fake results to voluntarily withdraw, noting that the investigation will now extend to include students who have been admitted with such fraudulent credentials.

BREAKING: Ugwuanyi, Ikpeazu, Shehu Sani Screened For Ambassadorial Appointments

The Federal Government has initiated the screening process for candidates nominated for ambassadorial positions as part of efforts to fill the vacant roles at Nigeria’s 76 embassies and 22 high commissions.

Nominees have been directed to report to the nearest Department of State Services (DSS) offices for security screenings.

In addition to the security checks, some of the nominees have reportedly been asked to provide detailed records of their personal education and work history.

A reliable source informed DAILY GAZETTE  that two former governors from the South-East, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and Okezie Ikpeazu, have already undergone the screening process for the ambassadorial positions.

The source also confirmed that Shehu Sani, a recent addition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and former presidential aide Reno Omokri are among the nominees who have been screened.

Further confirmation came that former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Femi Pedro, and former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, have also completed the screening and have been cleared for their potential diplomatic assignments.

It should be noted that in September 2023, President Bola Tinubu recalled all Nigerian ambassadors, both career and non-career.

After nearly two years of waiting, the presidency in March 2025 announced that replacements for these ambassadors would be named “very soon.”

DAILY GAZETTE previously reported that background checks are being conducted on the nominees, with information from the screenings being shared with relevant government agencies in both the presidency and the legislature.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, explained that the delay in the appointment of new ambassadors was due to financial constraints, while foreign officials and other stakeholders raised concerns about the lack of diplomatic leadership at several foreign missions.

However, with the ongoing screening process, the Federal Government is expected to announce the new diplomats and their respective portfolios shortly.

Atiku’s Son Reacts To Criticism Over Visit To Ribadu’s Brother

Aliyu Atiku Abubakar, the Turaki Adamawa and son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has addressed the controversy surrounding his visit to the Emir of Fufore, Muhammad Sani Ribadu, amid accusations that it was a political endorsement of the newly created emirates in Adamawa.

The visit had sparked criticism among some of the former vice president’s supporters, who interpreted it as a tacit endorsement of the emirates established by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.

Critics claimed the creation of these emirates was intended to reduce the influence of the Lamido Adamawa, Dr. Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha, and argued that Governor Fintiri had not consulted Atiku, who holds the traditional title of Wazirin Adamawa and is the second-highest traditional figure in the state.

The Emir of Fufore is the brother of National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, and both families are connected by marriage, as Aliyu is married to the NSA’s daughter.

Some critics suggested that the visit could be seen as aligning with political interests that conflicted with his father’s, particularly in light of the reported fallout between Atiku and Governor Fintiri.

Commentator Madu Maiha raised concerns, questioning whether the visit was “a betrayal of his father and his emirate, a strategic political manoeuvre for personal gain, or an act of self-diminution to appease influential forces for immediate rewards.”

In response to the backlash, Aliyu clarified the purpose of his visit in a statement posted on social media.

He said, “It has come to my attention that a recent visit I made to the Emir of Fufore has sparked reactions and a wide range of opinions. Some have gone as far as describing the visit as an endorsement of the newly established Fufore Emirate.”

Aliyu further explained: “It is important to note that the new emir is an uncle to my dear wife. My wife continues to stand by me, my siblings, and my extended relatives at all times, including during joyful and unpleasant moments.”

“As her husband, I appreciate and value such acts of kindness and respect. Indeed, I believe such deeds deserve reciprocity. On that note, I see nothing wrong with having respectful and courteous relationships with my in-laws.”

He continued, “There was life before politics, and life is not all about politics. I am grateful to my parents for raising my siblings and I in a manner that recognises this distinction.”

Aliyu also reaffirmed his loyalty to the Lamido Adamawa, saying, “my loyalty to His Royal Highness, Lamido Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha, PhD, is indisputably absolute. His decision to appoint me as the Turaki Adamawa at a record age of 25 is arguably the greatest honour bestowed on me in my life.”

He concluded by saying, “If anyone thinks they can cause friction or disharmony within my family by politicising how we lead our modest lives, they need to take their ill-intentioned criticism and obnoxious attitude elsewhere.”
