FG Opens Applications For 2026 Overseas Scholarships

The Federal Government has opened applications for the 2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund Overseas Scholarship Scheme, offering Nigerian postgraduate students the opportunity to pursue studies abroad.

The announcement was confirmed on Monday through a post on X (formerly Twitter) by the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun.

According to the post, the scholarship programme is targeted at MSc and PhD candidates in disciplines relevant to the oil and gas sector.

A statement published on the PTDF scholarship portal explained that successful applicants will study in selected institutions in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Malaysia.

The scholarship package covers tuition fees, return flight tickets, accommodation, living allowances, health insurance, and bench fees where applicable.

PTDF noted that the 2026 overseas scholarship scheme is designed to provide beneficiaries with access to world-class training, advanced research facilities, and global expertise, while strengthening Nigeria’s indigenous capacity in the oil and gas industry.

For PhD applicants in the United Kingdom, the programme will operate under a split-site arrangement.

This allows scholars to conduct research between the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Kaduna, and designated UK partner universities, including Robert Gordon University, the University of Strathclyde, and the University of Portsmouth.

The agency stressed that the selection process will be highly competitive, with candidates assessed based on academic performance, quality of research proposals, professional body membership, and the relevance of their proposed studies to the oil and gas sector.

MSc applicants are required to possess a minimum of a Second Class Lower degree, have completed the National Youth Service Corps programme, demonstrate computer literacy, and present at least five O’Level credits including English Language and Mathematics.

PhD applicants must also submit a detailed research proposal of no more than five pages, outlining objectives, methodology, and data collection strategies.

PTDF further warned that all applicants must verify their National Identity Number before applying, noting that multiple applications or the submission of false documents will lead to automatic disqualification.

Interested candidates are to submit their applications online via scholarship.ptdf.gov.ng for approved programmes at PTDF partner institutions.

Applications will close on February 27.

Tinubu Orders Investigation Into Killing Of Kano Woman, Six Children

President Bola Tinubu has directed a thorough investigation into the brutal killing of a housewife, Fatima Abubakar, and her six children in the Chiranci community of Kano State.

In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President condemned the attack as barbaric and extended his condolences to the grieving family.

He also praised the police for the swift apprehension of the main suspects and instructed security agencies to ensure a diligent prosecution.

“The President condemned the action as barbaric and condoled with the bereaved family over the tragedy. He commended the police for the rapid arrest of the principal suspects and ordered thorough investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators,” the statement said.

According to earlier reports, the victims, including the 35-year-old mother and her six children, were attacked at their home in Dorayi Chiranci Quarters on Saturday by suspected hoodlums who used dangerous weapons to inflict fatal injuries.

Confirming the incident, Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, said the command received a distress call around 12:10 p.m. on January 17 about the attack on the household of Haruna Bashir.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, promptly deployed a team of officers led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Lawal Mani.

The victims were evacuated to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

CSP Kiyawa added that three principal suspects have been arrested following intelligence-led operations conducted between the night of January 17 and the early hours of January 18, under the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the supervision of CP Bakori.

The President assured Nigerians of the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, emphasizing that acts of violence would not be tolerated.

Court Jails Man For Life For Sexually Assaulting Wife’s Niece

The Special Offences Division of the Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja has convicted and sentenced a 50-year-old artisan, Olumuyiwa Adjoto, to life imprisonment for the defilement and sexual assault of his wife’s six-year-old niece.

Justice Rahman Oshodi sentenced Adjoto for the rest of his life after finding him guilty of a two-count charge of defilement and sexual assault by penetration under Section 137 and 261 of the Lagos State Criminal Law 2015.

The judge, however, acquitted the defendant of indecent treatment and rubbing hands over the victim’s body, for lack of sufficient evidence.

The prosecutor, Babajide Boye, called four witnesses, including the convict’s wife, Olayemi Hunsa, the survivor, the Investigative Police Officer, and a medical doctor, while the convict testified in his own defence.

In his judgement, Justice Oshodi reviewed the testimony of the convict’s wife, Olayemi Hunsa, who stated that the survivor, her younger sister’s granddaughter, stayed with them in Mowo, Badagry, during the Easter holiday in April 2022.

He noted, “On 22 April, Olayemi left the girl at home around 5 a.m. to go to Idumota market.

When she returned home around 5:00 pm, the prosecutrix’sappearance was not cheerful as usual, and the child remained moody throughout dinner.

“After eating, they went outside for some fresh air. As they sat down, Olayemi placed the prosecutrix on her lap, and the child shouted and jumped down, saying, ‘My bum bum.’ When asked what happened, the child said, ‘It is daddy’.”

Olayemi said she carried the prosecutrix inside and asked what the defendant had done to her.

The prosecutrix narrated that when she was writing, the defendant pushed her on the bed, put his hand in her bum bum, then put his ‘thing” and did her ‘like this.’

When she was shouting, he slapped her mouth and told her to keep quiet.

He then used a white cloth to clean her, bathed her, dressed her, and told her to play with Aliya.

After this narration, Olayemi explained that she examined the child with a torchlight and discovered that she had been “dis-virgin.”
Medical examination done a few hours later also revealed the young girl had been “dis-virgined.”

Defending himself, Adjoto claimed an alibi, stating he was at Premium Pension in Agbara and his first wife’s home in Igborosun until after 8 p.m.

He alleged that marital issues with Olayemi over his first wife prompted the false accusations.”

In his judgment, Justice Oshodi held, “Olumuyiwa Adjoto, you have been found guilty of defilement contrary to section 137 of the Criminal Law, Chapter C17, Volume 3, Laws of Lagos State 2015, and sexual assault by penetration contrary to section 261 of the same law. These are grave offences.

“I have considered your remarks urging me to show mercy toward you, as well as the prosecution’s remarks during sentencing.

“The evidence before this court has established that you defiled and sexually assaulted a six-year-old child who was entrusted to your care. You penetrated her vagina and anus, causing her immense physical and psychological trauma.”

“Dr Olubukola Elizabeth Olatunji, a senior registrar at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, testified about the devastating impact of your actions on this child.

“She explained that the immediate effects include fear, difficulty trusting people, social withdrawal, possible urinary incontinence, and declining academic performance.

“The delayed psychological impacts include depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and difficulty maintaining relationships, including marital relationships.

“You have inflicted upon this innocent child wounds that may never fully heal.

“The punishment prescribed by law for the offence of defilement under section 137 of the Criminal Law is life imprisonment.

“The punishment prescribed for sexual assault by penetration under section 261 of the same law is also life imprisonment. These sentences reflect society’s condemnation of such heinous acts against children,” the judge held.

Accordingly, I sentence you as follows:(a) On count one (defilement), you are sentenced to life imprisonment.

“(b) On count two (sexual assault by penetration), you are sentenced to life imprisonment.
(c) Both sentences shall run concurrently.”

“Furthermore, in accordance with sections 33 and 38 of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency Law 2021, I order that your name be entered into the Sex Offenders Register maintained by the Lagos State Government”.

DSS Re-Arrests Ex-AGF Malami Over Fresh Terrorism Financing Allegations

Operatives of the Department of State Services have re-arrested former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, shortly after his release from the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja.

Security sources disclosed that Malami was taken into custody on Monday immediately after perfecting his bail conditions, following fresh allegations bordering on terrorism financing.

According to the sources, DSS operatives intercepted Malami as he exited the correctional facility, weeks after he was granted bail by the Federal High Court.

Officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service confirmed that the former AGF was released after meeting all bail requirements imposed by the court.

However, efforts to obtain official confirmation from the DSS proved unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

Malami’s release followed a ruling delivered on January 7, 2026, by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, granting bail to him, his wife Asabe, and their son in the sum of ₦500 million each.

The court ordered each defendant to produce two sureties with verifiable landed property in Asokoro, Maitama, or Gwarimpa, submit property documents to the court, and file affidavits of means.

They were also directed to surrender their international passports and barred from travelling outside the country without court approval.

Malami and his family members had earlier been remanded at Kuje Prison following their arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on December 29, 2025, over a 16-count charge bordering on money laundering involving about ₦8.7 billion.

The EFCC alleged that the defendants used multiple corporate entities, bank accounts, and high-value real estate transactions to launder proceeds of unlawful activities.

Amid the ongoing legal battle, Malami had accused the Chairman of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, of bias and conflict of interest, calling for his recusal from all matters relating to him.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Mohammed Bello, Malami argued that Olukoyede’s continued involvement was legally and morally indefensible, citing Chapter Nine of the Justice Ayo Salami Judicial Commission of Inquiry Report.

He claimed that as Attorney General, he supervised the establishment of the Salami Commission, where the current EFCC chairman served as secretary, creating what he described as personal and professional conflicts.

However, responding to the allegation, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede dismissed claims of witch-hunting, insisting that the investigation of Malami was neither political nor partisan.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme on January 11, Olukoyede said the probe predated his assumption of office and was being handled strictly in line with professional standards.

“If Nigeria is to move forward, all of us must agree that this fight against corruption must be conducted without partisanship,” he said.

2027: Atiku Warns Supporters Against Attacking Obi, Calls For Opposition Unity

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned opposition supporters against verbal attacks on former Anambra State Governor and ex-presidential candidate, Peter Obi, warning that such conduct weakens opposition unity and undermines Nigeria’s collective interest.

Atiku issued the warning in a post on X on Tuesday amid growing exchanges and recriminations among supporters of key opposition figures.

According to him, insults directed at either himself or Obi only damage the opposition coalition and play into the hands of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

“Anyone who insults Obi or Atiku does not mean well for the leaders, the Coalition ADC and for Nigeria and Nigerians,” Atiku said.

He added that persistent infighting within the opposition only strengthens the APC, which he accused of benefiting from internal divisions among rival political forces.

“The only people who benefit from this kind of civil war are the APC urban bandits who want to maintain the satanic status quo,” the former vice president stated.

Atiku stressed that unity and cooperation among opposition leaders and their supporters remain essential for democratic progress and national development.

His comments followed allegations from some quarters that supporters loyal to him have been unfairly targeting Obi, further deepening cracks within the emerging opposition coalition.

The coalition, operating under the African Democratic Congress platform, has gained traction in recent months following high-profile defections aimed at mounting a strong challenge to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Obi officially joined the ADC in December 2025 after leaving the Labour Party, citing the need for a more formidable opposition structure capable of addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges and governance failures.

Atiku had defected to the party a month earlier, describing the move as part of a broader mission to “rescue Nigeria.”

PDP Crisis: Anyanwu Loses Again As Court Throws Away Fresh Suit

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Tuesday dismissed a fresh suit filed by a factional National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, following his application to withdraw the case.

At the resumed hearing, Anyanwu’s counsel, U. C. Njemanze-Aku, informed the court that the matter had been overtaken by events and no longer required judicial determination.

According to him, continuing with the suit would amount to an abuse of court time, urging the court to allow its withdrawal in the interest of justice.

The leadership dispute over the position of PDP National Secretary began after Anyanwu vacated the office to contest the 2023 Imo State governorship election, which he lost.

His attempt to reclaim the position afterwards triggered internal tensions within the party, leading to the emergence of Sunday Udeh-Okoye as a rival claimant.

On December 20, 2024, the Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu affirmed earlier decisions of the Federal High Court, which removed Anyanwu from office and recognised Udeh-Okoye as the authentic National Secretary of the PDP.

Anyanwu challenged the verdicts at the Supreme Court, which, in March 2025, overturned the decisions of both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal.

Despite the apex court’s ruling, the leadership crisis persisted, with factions continuing to assert control over the PDP national secretariat.

In a bid to enforce the Supreme Court judgment, Anyanwu later instituted a fresh suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The court, in November 2025, granted his application to amend the originating summons but awarded costs of N30,000 against him in favour of each defendant and adjourned the matter to January 20, 2026, for hearing.

However, when the case came up for hearing, Anyanwu opted to withdraw the suit, effectively bringing the prolonged legal battle to an end.

Counsel to the second defendant, Akintayo Balogun, opposed the withdrawal, arguing that the suit should never have been filed and urged the court to dismiss it with costs, demanding one million naira.

Other defence lawyers aligned with the submission, seeking costs ranging from one million to N1.5 million.

Responding, Anyanwu’s counsel maintained that the withdrawal was not a voluntary discontinuation but was compelled by circumstances beyond the plaintiff’s control, urging the court to allow parties to bear their own costs.

In his ruling, the presiding judge dismissed the suit and declined all applications for costs.

“The delay is not attributable to any of the parties. The situation made it so. For this reason, I award no cost,” the judge ruled.

Doctor Remanded After Issuing Fake Medical Report To Help Activist Just Adetoun Evade Arrest

Activist Adetoun,

The Ogun State Government has announced that a medical doctor has been remanded in prison for allegedly issuing a fake medical report to aid social welfare activist Adetoun Onajobi, popularly known as Just Adetoun, in evading police arrest.

The activist herself remains at large, following a six-count charge filed against her by the Ogun State Police Command, the state government confirmed in a statement on its official X page.

The statement was issued on Monday by Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwasina Ogungbade, SAN.

The controversy began after Nigerian-born British boxer Anthony Joshua was involved in a road accident in Ogun State in December 2025.

Just Adetoun released videos claiming that the state lacked emergency ambulance services and accusing Governor Dapo Abiodun of neglecting public welfare.

The Attorney General described these allegations as false, malicious, and misleading, noting that Ogun State operates multiple state-supported ambulance services.

Following the videos, the police invited Onajobi to report for questioning on January 5, 2026, but she failed to appear, claiming illness in subsequent videos while remaining in hiding.

Her lawyer submitted a medical report purportedly confirming her indisposition, but police investigations revealed the document was fraudulent.

“The doctor who issued the report admitted that he never examined, treated, or attended to Adetoun Onajobi,” the statement said.

“He has been arrested, charged, and remanded for issuing a fraudulent medical document and obstructing justice.”

The Attorney General also questioned the credibility of the activist, highlighting previous incidents of misconduct, including bullying a woman in Lagos and unlawfully filming and sharing images of the woman’s underage child online.

The Ogun State Police Command had earlier confirmed that Onajobi was invited following complaints about her online posts criticizing Governor Abiodun, including claims that the state prioritized luxury SUVs for local government chairmen over functional ambulance services.

The government stressed that investigations into the activist’s actions and the fraudulent medical report remain ongoing.

JUST IN: Kano Governor Abba Yusuf Holds Strategic Meeting With President Tinubu At Aso Rock

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf on Monday met with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in what sources say is a politically significant engagement.

Dressed in his signature flowing white babanriga and a red Kwankwasiyya cap, Yusuf was seen heading to the President’s office at 4:13 pm local time.

The meeting comes amid ongoing speculation about Yusuf’s potential defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that has been delayed multiple times since early January.

This marks Yusuf’s first known audience with President Tinubu since returning from Abu Dhabi, where the President attended the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

Sources familiar with the matter said the defection has been stalled over the APC’s reluctance to guarantee Yusuf an automatic gubernatorial ticket for the 2027 elections.

The governor is also reportedly seeking the authority to nominate a minister representing Kano State and to influence the replacement of federal appointees in the state.

Insiders indicate that these demands have put Yusuf at odds with key APC figures, including Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who is reportedly positioning for the 2027 governorship.

In recent days, Yusuf shared a video on his official Facebook account showing him presiding over the first State Executive Council meeting of 2026 at the Kano State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja.

Yusuf’s political mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has publicly condemned the planned defection as a betrayal, warning of consequences if the move proceeds.

Loyalists, including Kwankwaso’s son, Hon. Mustapha Kwankwaso, have reportedly threatened resignation should Yusuf officially join the APC.

Meanwhile, APC chieftain Alhassan Ado Doguwa claimed that President Tinubu had directed a suspension of the party’s ongoing e-registration exercise in Kano until Yusuf formally joins.

Doguwa added that the President intends for Yusuf to be the first to e-register in the state.

In a message on Yusuf’s 63rd birthday on January 5, President Tinubu praised the governor for his infrastructural and grassroots development efforts, noting improvements in roads and education.

Tinubu described Kano as “the bastion of progressive politics in the North,” and commended Yusuf’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of the Talakawas, echoing the legacy of the late Mallam Aminu Kano.

Police Officer Arrested After Killing Colleague At Rivers Supermarket

A tragic incident unfolded in Port Harcourt on Sunday, January 18, 2026, when a Nigerian police officer allegedly shot two of his colleagues during joint duty with military personnel, resulting in the death of one officer.

The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Inspector Victor Okus, who reportedly opened fire on Inspectors Ibrahim Sani and Daniel Dauda at Next Cash and Carry Supermarket in Trans-Amadi.

According to the command, Inspector Sani sustained gunshot wounds to the head and later died at Nopsam Hospital, while Inspector Dauda, shot in the neck, continues to receive medical treatment.

The body of Inspector Sani has been preserved at the Military Hospital mortuary in Port Harcourt for autopsy.

Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police, stated that the suspect will face an orderly room trial and subsequent prosecution in court.

“The Rivers State Police Command is deeply saddened by this tragic and distressing incident and extends heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues, and friends of Inspector Sani,” she said.

The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has directed a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident.

He stressed the importance of firearm safety while on duty and warned that such acts of negligence would not be tolerated.

Preliminary reports suggest that Inspector Okus has been evasive during interrogation, and a senior police source dismissed claims that the shooting was accidental, describing the suspect’s assertion that his rifle accidentally discharged as untrue.

The incident has raised concerns about discipline and firearm handling within the police force, with the command reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and preventing similar tragedies in the future.

Ghanaian Referee Dismisses Bias Claims, Receives Hero’s Welcome

Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea has rejected accusations of bias during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final between Nigeria and Morocco, insisting he officiates strictly according to the laws of the game.

He returned home to a celebratory reception in Accra, DAILY GAZETTE reports.

Laryea was greeted with cheers, drumming, and sustained applause at Kotoka International Airport on Saturday, reflecting widespread support for his performance at the tournament.

The experienced official had come under scrutiny after being appointed to oversee the high-profile semi-final, in which Nigeria lost 4-2 on penalties to host nation Morocco. Some fans and players questioned his impartiality following the defeat.

Speaking to Joy TV, Laryea acknowledged the pressure of officiating at that level but said the appointment itself was recognition of his quality.

“It was a normal feeling. Of course, there is a bit of anxiety because it was my first time officiating a semi-final at AFCON.

I have participated in three AFCONs before, and being chosen for such a game shows confidence in your abilities. You just have to do your best,” he said.

On handling criticism from Nigerian fans and social media, Laryea remained undeterred.

“For me, I just focus on refereeing. I don’t follow what is being said online. I simply apply the laws of the game,” he stated.

Currently Ghana’s top referee, Laryea has been on the FIFA International Referees list since 2014.

He began officiating at age 17 in Ghana’s lower leagues and later progressed to the Ghana Premier League, debuting in a match between Medeama SC and Berekum Chelsea FC.

Since earning his FIFA badge, Laryea has handled several major international assignments, including the 2017 CAF U-17 Cup of Nations in Gabon, the 2018 WAFU Cup of Nations and African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco, the 2020 CHAN in Cameroon, and the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, also in Cameroon.
