Mia Love, First Black Republican Woman In Congress Dies At 49

Mia Love, a trailblazing conservative and the first Black Republican woman elected to Congress, has passed away at the age of 49 following a battle with brain cancer, her family announced on Sunday.

Love, the daughter of Haitian immigrants, represented Utah’s 4th Congressional District from 2015 to 2019.

She made history as a prominent voice in Washington, advocating for conservative principles and breaking barriers in the political landscape.

Her family shared the news on her X account, stating that she passed away peacefully at her home in Saratoga Springs.

“With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully,” the statement read. “We are thankful for the many good wishes, prayers, and condolences.”

Love had been receiving treatment at Duke University’s brain tumor center, but earlier this month, her daughter revealed that she had stopped responding to immunotherapy.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox paid tribute to Love, calling her a “true friend” and praising her “legacy of service” that inspired many.

During her time in Congress, Love championed issues such as limited government, fiscal responsibility, and immigration reform.

Although she lost her re-election bid in 2018, she remained active in political discourse, serving as a commentator and speaker.

ABC News reports that Love began her political career in 2003 when she was elected to the city council in Saratoga Springs, a rapidly growing community about 30 miles south of Salt Lake City.

She later became the city’s mayor.

In 2012, she ran for a seat in the U.S. House but narrowly lost to Democratic incumbent Jim Matheson.

However, she made a successful bid in 2014, defeating first-time candidate Doug Owens by about 7,500 votes.

Although Love did not center her campaigns around her racial identity, she acknowledged the historic significance of her 2014 victory.

She noted that her win challenged skeptics who doubted that a Black, Republican, Mormon woman could secure a congressional seat in predominantly white Utah.

At one point, Love was considered a rising star within the GOP.

However, she distanced herself from Donald Trump, who was unpopular among many Utah voters during his 2016 presidential run.

That year, when a 2005 recording surfaced of Trump making lewd comments about women, Love skipped the Republican National Convention and announced she would not vote for him.

Instead, she endorsed Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who later dropped out of the race.

During her 2018 reelection campaign, Love sought to distance herself from Trump on trade and immigration while supporting Republican tax policies.

Despite Republicans significantly outnumbering Democrats in her district, she lost by fewer than 700 votes to Democrat Ben McAdams, the former mayor of Salt Lake City.

The morning after her defeat, Trump publicly criticized Love and other Republicans who had not fully embraced him.

“Mia Love gave me no love, and she lost,” he said. “Too bad. Sorry about that, Mia.”

Following her loss, Love transitioned to political commentary, working as an analyst for CNN and serving as a fellow at the University of Sydney.

After Trump’s election, Love expressed acceptance of the outcome.

“Yes, Trump says a lot of inconsiderate things that are unfortunate and impossible to defend. However, his policies have a high probability of benefiting all Americans,” she wrote in a social media post.

Seyi Tinubu’s Food Distribution In Northern Nigeria Is Degrading, An Affront To Our Legacies – Former Jigawa Governor Blows Hot

Former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido has strongly criticized Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, for his recent visit to northern Nigeria, where he distributed food to residents.

Lamido described the gesture as a humiliation and an insult to the people of the region.

Speaking in Hausa in a video, Lamido denounced the act as degrading and politically motivated.

You will hear people saying that Arewa is known for bravery and integrity, yet Tinubu is going to Sokoto and Kano, distributing cooked rice to our people,” he said.

This is total humiliation. Is this how to govern or promote good governance? What Tinubu is doing to the northern people is an insult.”

He further questioned the implications of such actions on the legacy of the region’s past leaders.

Is this what we have been subjected to? This is the height of humiliation, and they know it. Arewa, which produced great leaders like Aminu Kano, Sardauna (Sir Ahmadu Bello), Tafawa Balewa, and many other prominent figures, is now being reduced to a region where people are only given cooked rice.”

Lamido urged northern Nigerians to take a stand against what he perceives as an act of disrespect.

However, it is up to us to unite and resist this humiliation or fold our hands and allow an outsider to come to our region and belittle us.”

“It is time to stand for what is right. If we stay on the right track in this country, no one can ever defeat us,” he added.

Seyi Tinubu recently visited several northern states, including Niger, where he distributed food packages during the Ramadan fasting period.

The items, such as Danwake—a local dish made from bean flour—were packed in plastic bags featuring images of both President Tinubu and Seyi Tinubu.

However, the initiative was met with strong backlash.

Many in the northern communities viewed the gesture as an attempt to gain political favor amid the region’s economic difficulties.

Critics argued that offering basic street food items during Ramadan, especially with personalized branding, was both insensitive and exploitative.

No Agreement Between North And South On 2027 Presidency – Galadima

Buba Galadima, a key figure in the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and a close associate of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has dismissed claims of any agreement between the North and South regarding the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking in an interview on Sunday, Galadima emphasized that opposition parties should focus on ensuring credible elections rather than debating the regional backgrounds of presidential candidates.

“I don’t discuss the North and I don’t discuss the South when I speak on democracy. Okay. If Tinubu is finishing and has done well, and Nigerians decide to vote for Seyi Tinubu, I have no grudge, provided that there is a free and fair election,” he stated.

“I have no grudge because that is democracy. Opposition should be more concerned about credible election, than this North and South thing.”

Addressing rumors of a pre-existing arrangement between the regions, he declared, “And anybody who tells you there is any understanding or agreement between the North and South, tell him he’s a liar. And he doesn’t understand what democracy is. He doesn’t understand what politics is. As far as I am concerned, I am talking about democracy, I am not talking about North and South.”

His remarks come shortly after a major political development where the 2023 presidential candidates from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, the Labour Party (LP)’s Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, announced the formation of a coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

Pope Francis Discharged From Hospital After Five Weeks

Pope Francis was released from the hospital on Sunday after spending more than five weeks receiving treatment for pneumonia.

He waved to cheering crowds and expressed gratitude for their support.

Appearing frail, the pope sat in a wheelchair on one of the hospital balconies, greeting hundreds of well-wishers who had gathered to see him.

This marked his first public appearance since February 14, when he was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital due to breathing difficulties and a respiratory illness that later developed into pneumonia.

“Thank you, everyone,” Francis said in a weak voice into a microphone, waving gently to the crowd. Occasionally, he lifted a hand to wave in the air or gave a thumbs-up gesture.

Noticing a particular individual in the crowd, he remarked with a small smile, “I can see that woman with yellow flowers, well done,” drawing laughter from the gathering.

The pope remained on the balcony for about two minutes before being discharged. He left the hospital in a car, waving from the closed window as he passed by journalists.

Observers noted that he was wearing a cannula, a plastic tube in his nostrils delivering oxygen.

Bishop Larry James Kulick from Pennsylvania, USA, shared his thoughts with AFP: “Seeing Francis just filled me and I think many of the people who are here with a great sense of joy. It was just a wonderful opportunity to see him, and I think he responded so much to the people’s prayers and to all of the chanting. I hope it lifted his spirits—I think it did.”

Similarly, Domenico Papisca Marra, a 69-year-old Catholic from Reggio Calabria in southern Italy, said he rushed to the hospital upon hearing that Francis would be making an appearance.

“I am really happy to have seen him… I am really in love with Pope Francis,” he said.

After leaving the hospital in a white Fiat 500 L, Francis was driven past the Vatican to Santa Maria Maggiore, a church in Rome where he traditionally prays before and after trips.

He was later seen arriving back at the Vatican.

This was the fourth and longest hospital stay for the pope since his election in 2013.

Having had part of one lung removed as a young man, Francis lost weight during his hospitalization and now faces a recovery period of at least two months.

His prolonged illness has fueled speculation about whether he might consider stepping down, similar to his predecessor, Benedict XVI.

During his hospital stay, Francis experienced repeated respiratory crises, requiring bronchoscopies to clear his lungs and a blood transfusion.

The seriousness of his condition was highlighted when, on March 6, an audio recording was released in which the pope’s voice sounded weak and breathless as he thanked those praying for him.

Although he managed to carry out some work from the hospital, doctors have advised him against engaging in public interactions too soon.

“Further progress will take place at his home, because a hospital—even if this seems strange—is the worst place to recover since it’s where you can contract more infections,” said Dr. Sergio Alfieri on Saturday.

Alfieri added, “During the convalescence period, he will not be able to take on his usual daily appointments.”

The restrictions may prove challenging for Francis, who has always maintained a busy schedule and enjoys close interaction with his followers.

There are also questions about who will preside over the religious events leading up to Easter, the most significant period in the Christian calendar.

However, Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin dismissed any speculation about the pope resigning, stating, “No, no, no. Absolutely not.”

At the most critical stages of his illness, Francis spent several weeks on assisted breathing, using nasal tubes and an oxygen mask.

His doctors revealed that he faced two “very critical” moments where his life was at risk, though he remained conscious.

He was only declared out of danger after a full month of treatment at Gemelli Hospital.

Due to the pneumonia, Francis will need physiotherapy to regain full use of his voice. “When you suffer bilateral pneumonia, your lungs are damaged, and your respiratory muscles are also strained,” Dr. Alfieri explained.

“It takes time for the voice to get back to normal.”

2027: PDP Gives Condition For Supporting Atiku, Peter Obi, El-Rufai

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is yet to officially state its position on the coalition being formed by key opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections.

However, DAILY GAZETTE has learned that the party may consider joining the alliance on one condition: that it does not lose its distinct identity in the process.

Having ruled Nigeria for 16 years before being unseated by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015, the PDP remains a major force in opposition politics.

Last week, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, confirmed his participation in a coalition aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu and the APC in 2027.

Atiku’s statement was in response to an earlier call by former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, who urged opposition leaders to unite against the APC.

El-Rufai made this call while announcing his decision to leave the APC for the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

During a press conference organized by opposition leaders to discuss the President’s controversial declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, Atiku was asked whether the emerging coalition would be the primary opposition platform against the APC in 2027. He responded unequivocally, saying, “Yes.”

Sources within the PDP have indicated that the party expects Atiku to clarify his position soon. A National Executive Committee (NEC) member, speaking anonymously, stated, “We expect him to shed more light on his decision as we proceed. For now, he is still a high-ranking member of our party, the PDP.”

“We have been following his public statements and engagements, and he hasn’t announced to anyone that he is leaving or has left our party.”

“Yes, he left the party on two previous occasions over the past two decades—first to join Tinubu’s Action Congress (AC) to contest the 2007 presidential election, and then in 2013 or thereabouts to join others in forming the All Progressives Congress (APC).”

“Note, however, that on each of these occasions, he returned to the PDP. Now, whether he is planning to leave to join others or he wants others to come join us to beat the APC rigging machine in 2027, only he can explain.

“For now, from my interactions with members of his team, one thing is clear: this time around, Atiku’s move is a strategic step towards unifying opposition forces against the ruling APC.

“His announcement of the formation of a coalition signals a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, as opposition leaders seek to present a united front against the current administration.

“The proposed coalition is expected to bring together key political parties and stakeholders, including prominent figures like Mr Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

“It’s worth noting that Atiku’s decision might not be universally accepted within the PDP, as some members may have different opinions on the best strategy to challenge the APC in 2027.

“Nevertheless, Atiku’s move demonstrates his commitment to opposing the current administration and his willingness to work with other opposition parties to achieve this goal.”

While Atiku’s move is being debated, PDP leaders insist that the party’s identity must remain intact.

A former governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, made this clear when he dismissed El-Rufai’s call to join the SDP.

Lamido said, “The party we formed, the PDP, is the one that gave birth to El-Rufai. You’re not enough to make us leave the PDP.

“He (El-Rufai) once said that there are no elders in Nigerian politics, but now he is calling on us to join him in the SDP.”

Questioning El-Rufai’s motivation, Lamido further stated, “Leadership is done with patience and vision, and doing things for the peace of the followers and the country as a whole.”

He reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, asserting that the party had not done anything to warrant him leaving for another.

His stance was echoed by Chief Bode George, another founding member of the PDP, who has repeatedly stated his commitment to remaining in the party.

Why Postgraduate Students Are Ineligible For FG’s Student Loan – NELFUND

President Tinubu,

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has disclosed that over 271,000 Nigerian students in tertiary institutions have benefited from the Federal Government’s Student Loan program since its launch in May 2024.

It also clarified the eligibility criteria, explaining why postgraduate students are currently not qualified to apply for the scheme.

Speaking on TVC’s Breakfast Saturday, NELFUND’s Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr, provided insights into the progress of the initiative.

According to him, as of Saturday, March 22, approximately 438,000 out of 521,000 registered students have submitted their applications for the loan.

His words: “Nigerian students are reacting extremely positively to the initiative. And as more disbursements happen, they are becoming more trusting. One of the interesting things going on at the moment is that President Bola Tinubu is restoring trust in the government. The students are receiving it well. We are transparent about what we are doing.

“In total, till date we have about 271,000 Nigerian students who have either had their fees paid or their fees plus upkeep. The way the President has set this up and the way he has insisted that this must work is that you don’t need to know anybody to access this loan. And that’s what we are doing. No connections, no long leg, no man-know-man. We are not going to allow it to happen. The President wants us to completely democratize education.”

While no repayments have been received yet, Sawyerr assured that the Fund is working on a structured repayment system to ensure efficiency.

Addressing the exclusion of postgraduate students, he explained that the scheme is primarily designed to support those pursuing their first degree.

However, he suggested that postgraduate students may be included in the future.

“Post-graduate students can’t apply for this loan. We have a lot of people in this country who are just trying to get on the first rung of the ladder as far as tertiary education is concerned. The funds we have are focused on those people who are looking for their first opportunity.

“I congratulate those who have graduated who are doing their Master’s or PhDs, it’s fantastic. At some point in the future, we will be able to fund them. Today, we are looking for those who need us most. They are the people we want to support.

“We do have plans for them (post-graduate students) but they are not our priority currently. Our priority currently are those who are leaving secondary school and dropping out because they can’t afford to go to university. That’s our focus. We want to stop people from exiting the system post-secondary school. We also want to stop people from dropping out 200 Level, 300 Level, 400 Level because of lack of money. That’s our focus for now. Let’s rescue these guys first. We will get to those who are a little bit better endowed educationally.”

2027 Presidency: Northern Elders Met, We’re Following Atiku’s Lead – APC Chieftain

Former House of Representatives member for Kazaure/Roni/Gwiwa/Yankashi Constituency, Gudaji Kazaure, has explained that his recent visit to Atiku Abubakar was in support of the former vice president’s efforts to address Nigeria’s challenges.

According to Naija News, Kazaure, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Jigawa State, revealed that his visit followed a meeting held by Northern elders to discuss the country’s situation.

Speaking on Saturday after his visit to Atiku, Kazaure, alongside other Northern politicians, expressed concern over the abandonment of the electorate by many elected officials.

He also criticized the current administration’s approach to fighting corruption, stating that the government had failed to deliver on its promises.

Explaining his position, Kazaure said, “I visited our father, Atiku Abubakar. I visited him because of the Nigerian problem we are facing now. Politically, all the Northern elders and leaders, we gathered and had a meeting before meeting him. So that let all our politicians come together to find a lasting solution. Because most of our elected people, they abandoned us, they abandoned all what we are trying to make this country great.”

“Many of our problems that we already talked about or we reviewed in the previous administration, none of it was executed. We have nobody in this country that will say we didn’t expose corruption, we didn’t talk about corruption. And this government promised to continue investigating what will be in the future. And up to now, not enough. Nobody invited me, nobody called me, nobody knew whether I am existing or not.”

“So that is why we cooperate to call all our patriotic politicians to come and join one way. And we are here waiting for the instruction of the Northern Nigeria and the Nigerian in general, those who are patriotic and looking for a Nigerian progress. We are ready to follow wherever they carry us. We are ready to go. We don’t care which any party.”

“We are here for the main project of how to save the country. So wherever our elders carry us, we are ready to follow them. This is the reason I visited my father to come and do greeting to him. And he received me with respect, like as a son, and I am grateful for what he said, because he is not thinking for himself.”

“He is thinking for Nigerian people. And whoever thinks for Nigerian people, he is the person that we are supposed to put him on the front. Because Nigerian people first. Nigerian people second. Nigerian people third. And we are ready to serve the country in one way or the other. So this journey of all our political elders, we are ready for them to show us where we are going to. And we are ready to follow, inshallah (sic).”

Just In: Police Summon Nigerian Senator Over Alleged Russian KGB Infiltration Of National Assembly

Senator Sunday Karimi has been summoned by the Nigeria Police Force for questioning following a report alleging that Russia’s KGB (Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti), the former Soviet security agency, has infiltrated the National Assembly, raising concerns about Nigeria’s democratic stability.

Karimi is expected to cooperate with the investigation and disclose details regarding the report’s origin and sources.

The controversy began when the senator allegedly shared a report titled “KGB Agent Group Warns Senate: A Call for Vigilance Amidst Threats to Democracy” on the official WhatsApp group of the 10th Senate on February 23, 2025.

The report, first published by The Reporters, an online media outlet, sparked immediate debate within the National Assembly.

Senator Natasha H. Akpoti-Uduaghan, currently under suspension, petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), raising alarm over the report’s implications for national security.

In her petition, dated March 5, 2025, Akpoti-Uduaghan warned about the seriousness of the claim, stating that “No nation can afford to ignore the presence of such a group within its legislative body.”

She emphasized that an immediate investigation was necessary to address the potential threat.

The petition further specified that Karimi shared the report in the Senate’s WhatsApp group at 4:08 AM Singapore time (8:08 PM Nigerian time) on February 23, 2025, while Akpoti-Uduaghan was in Singapore.

Given the weight of the allegations, the police have moved swiftly.

Karimi has been ordered to appear for questioning at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on March 24, 2025.

His invitation letter, dated March 17, 2025, was signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Akin Fakorede, Head of the IGP Monitoring Unit.

With Reference No: CR:3000/IGP.SEC/MU/OPS.T1/ABJ/VOL.115/281, the letter is titled: “Re: Petition for the investigation of a publication titled ‘KGB Agent group warns Senate: A call for vigilance amidst threats to democracy.’”

The letter further states: “This office is investigating the above-mentioned case reported to the Inspector General of Police, in which your name featured prominently. You are kindly requested to interview the undersigned through CSP. Sunny Amison on 24th March, 2025, to shed more light on the allegations.”

Explosion Hits NLNG Facility In Rivers Days After Sole Administrator Took Office

An explosion has been confirmed at the Soku oil facility operated by the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited in Akuku Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.

However, the exact cause of the explosion remains unclear, with possibilities ranging from equipment failure to sabotage or an attack on the facility.

The incident comes amid the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, following the alleged impeachment notice to suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara by the State Assembly.

In the past week, multiple reports of explosions at various oil facilities across the state have surfaced.

While some of these reports were accurate, others turned out to be false.

For instance, a viral video claiming that suspected militants bombed two Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) flow stations at Cawthorne Channel was debunked.

It was later confirmed that the video was an old clip from an explosion that occurred on February 19, 2025, at Cawthorne Channel 1 in Iloamatoru, Bonny, which resulted in three fatalities.

However, reports of explosions in Bodo Community in Ogoniland and Ogba/Egbema Ndoni Local Government Area were confirmed to be true.

In a nationwide broadcast on March 18, President Bola Tinubu declared a six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, citing the recent explosions as part of the justification for taking action to protect critical oil infrastructure.

Confirming the explosion in Soku, the Executive Director of Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria), Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, stated that the incident was accompanied by fireballs.

However, the leadership of the Soku Kingdom has dismissed reports circulating on social media that fire engulfed the Soku gas plant.

The General Secretary of Soku Kingdom, Mr. Witness Alasia, clarified the situation, explaining that while a fire outbreak occurred on a gas pipeline along the Soku-Abua-Rumuji right of way, the Soku gas plant remains intact and fully operational.

Part of his statement reads: “On behalf of the leadership of the Soku Kingdom, I write to debunk the falsehood escalating on all social media that there was an explosion in the Soku Gas Plant. It is disheartening and worrisome that people will mischievously misinform the public with a baseless and untrue story.”

“The public should disregard this unguided and untrue report. We use this medium to inform the public that Soku and her satellite communities are safe and calm. Regards.”
