Beyond The Present: Reimagining Governance Through Enugu Smart City

Cities, like people, are remembered not only for what they were but for what they dared to become. Most renowned cities of the world today didn’t just happen. No. They are pure products of vision, audacity, and timing.

Enugu, once defined by coal and colonial rail lines is now negotiating a new identity; identity shaped not by what lies beneath the soil, but by what rises from imagination, planning, and governance that refuses to be trapped in the present.

To speak of Enugu Smart City is not merely to speak of buildings, roads, or digital gadgets.

It is to speak of a philosophy of leadership—a belief that governance must outrun today’s problems and arrive early at tomorrow’s possibilities. It is governance that understands that the future does not wait for permissions.

Across the world, cities that dared to think ahead rewrote their destinies. Dubai was once little more than sand, sea, and trading posts. It did not stumble into greatness by accident.

It was deliberately imagined. Leaders there asked uncomfortable questions long before others did: What happens when oil fades? What kind of city attracts the world? How do you govern a future before it arrives? And so Dubai was drawn first in vision, then on paper, and finally in steel, glass, and data.

Roads came with purpose, technology with intent, governance with coordination. The city did not grow; it was designed.

Singapore followed a similar path. So did Seoul and many other cities of the world where entire cities were planned before the first family moved in. These places teach one lesson clearly: great cities are not accidents; they are decisions carefully taken.

Today, Enugu is making such a decision.
Governor Mbah appears to understand a truth many leaders miss: that leadership, in most cases, is not about managing decay, but about orchestrating renewal.

It is this same gap in knowledge that has led some people into questioning the need for smart green schools when the governor would have easily renovated the existing school blocks.

The governor understands the difference between repairing a house and designing a home.

His approach to governance does not wait for crisis before acting. It anticipates pressures that come with modernity, urban congestion, youth unemployment, digital disruption, and tries to provide answers for them ahead of time.

The idea of a Smart City, as embraced by Enugu, is not the shallow idea of installing cameras and calling it modern.

It is a deeper rethinking of how a city breathes, learns, and secures itself. It is the understanding that a city is a living organism and that intelligence must flow through it like blood.

The New Enugu City project focuses on creating a modern, tech-driven urban center with features like 24/7 dedicated power, central sewage, high-speed internet, piped gas, and integrated transport (monorail, CNG buses).

Key zones include an innovation hub (Innovation Park) and commercial/corporate areas (Vitality Bay), with plans for artificial lakes, green spaces, smart schools, advanced healthcare, and a world-class conference center, aiming to equal global cities by offering a “plug-and-play” environment.

This city is not being squeezed out of old mistakes. It is being laid out afresh: roads aligned with logic, utilities buried with foresight, digital infrastructure embedded from the start. Water, power, data, transport, and waste management are all planned as part of a single conversation, not as scattered interventions.

Again, what makes Enugu’s smart city vision compelling is not just the physical blueprint but the human intention behind it.

A city can not be smart if its people are left behind. Governor Mbah understands that the idea of intelligence begins in classrooms before it appears in control rooms. This provides the justification for the smart green schools project in Enugu.

These are schools where children are to be introduced early to digital tools, creative thinking, and problem-solving.

Where energy comes from the sun, not generators. Where learning is not frozen in the past, but aligned with the future. Where children are prepared for life in a smart city—the Enugu Smart City.

Of course, the road ahead is not without shadows. Smart cities demand maintenance, discipline, and constant learning. But progress has never been the absence of challenge; it has always been the courage to face it early.

In this sense, Enugu’s smart city project is less about competing with Dubai but an expression of the understanding that governance, when bold, can translate abstract ideas into concrete realities.

2027: Tinubu Considers Bishop Kukah, Dogara, Gen. Musa, Gov. Mutfwang As Running Mate

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is reportedly considering four prominent northern Christian figures as potential running mates for the 2027 presidential election, according to multiple political sources.

Names widely discussed include former Speaker of the House, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, Defence Minister Lt-Gen. Christopher Musa (retd), Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, and Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Most Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah.

Reports suggest Tinubu’s inner circle is reviewing these options to achieve a balance of religion and geography, with all four candidates hailing from predominantly Christian northern states.

Analysts note that, under the 1999 Constitution, the APC standard-bearer retains the freedom to choose a running mate from any part of Nigeria.

The speculation follows criticism of the Muslim–Muslim ticket adopted by Tinubu in the 2023 elections, which drew scrutiny domestically and internationally, including from U.S. officials advocating for more inclusive governance.

Christian associations, civil society organisations, and community groups have highlighted insecurity in northern Christian communities, arguing that broader political representation could strengthen national unity.

Northern Muslim groups, however, maintain that insecurity affects all communities in the region, citing Boko Haram and ISWAP attacks, banditry, and mass kidnappings as evidence of a universal crisis.

Political analysts are now asking which of the four figures—Dogara, Musa, Mutfwang, or Kukah—could best serve as a unifying force capable of fostering national peace and prosperity.

Observers stress that, beyond religious and ethnic considerations, Nigeria’s next leadership must prioritize stability, economic growth, and equitable treatment of citizens across all six geopolitical zones.

Senegal Shock Hosts Morocco After Extra-Time Drama To Win Second AFCON Crown

Senegal claimed their second Africa Cup of Nations title after edging hosts Morocco 1–0 in extra time in a tense final decided by Pape Gueye’s stunning strike in Rabat.

The match, played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, was overshadowed by controversy and ugly scenes following a late penalty award to Morocco deep into stoppage time.

Brahim Diaz had the chance to secure the title for the hosts but his chipped penalty was comfortably saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy after a prolonged delay caused by VAR checks and heated protests.

The penalty, awarded after a challenge on Diaz by El Hadji Malick Diouf, sparked fury among Senegal players and supporters.

Tempers flared in the stands, with some away fans attempting to force their way onto the pitch before security restored order.

Senegal had earlier thought they had taken the lead when Ismaila Sarr scored from a rebound in added time, but the goal was ruled out for a foul, further heightening tensions.

After surviving the penalty scare, Senegal grew in confidence and struck decisively in the fourth minute of extra time.

Sadio Mane initiated the move by winning possession in midfield before releasing Idrissa Gana Gueye, who found Pape Gueye surging forward.

The Villarreal midfielder shrugged off Achraf Hakimi and rifled a superb shot into the top corner beyond Yassine Bounou.

Morocco pushed hard for an equaliser, with Nayef Aguerd hitting the crossbar in extra time, but the breakthrough never came.

The hosts were left heartbroken as their dream of lifting the trophy on home soil and ending a 50-year wait for a second AFCON title faded away.

Senegal nearly doubled their lead late on, but Cherif Ndiaye missed a clear chance. Still, the Lions of Teranga held firm to secure victory.

The triumph marks Senegal’s second AFCON title in three editions, following their penalty shoot-out win over Egypt in 2022.

Remarkably, Gueye’s goal was the first Senegal have ever scored in an AFCON final after failing to find the net in their previous appearances in the decider.

Senegal now turn their attention to the World Cup in the United States later this year, while questions remain over the disturbances that marred the final and the organisation of the event in Rabat.

2027: Tinubu Faces Serious Plot Ahead Of Re-Election – Ohanaeze Leader

A chieftain of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, has warned President Bola Tinubu not to underestimate what he described as an emerging nationwide conspiracy aimed at stopping his re-election bid in 2027.

Isiguzoro, who is the Deputy President-General of the Igbo socio-cultural organisation, said opposition forces were already exploring strategic alliances to challenge the President, stressing that the next general election would be fiercely contested.

Speaking in an interview, he said the 2027 election would be determined more by political strategy and timely decisions than by the advantages of incumbency.

According to him, growing dissatisfaction among political, economic and regional blocs across the country was creating fertile ground for opposition realignments, which could pose a serious threat to Tinubu’s second-term ambition if not addressed early.

“President Tinubu must not underestimate the conspiracy against him. The 2027 election will be won through strategy, courage and decisive political action,” Isiguzoro said.

He added that the President’s political survival would depend on his ability to anticipate and neutralise these emerging alliances before they crystallise into a formidable electoral force.

Isiguzoro identified some of the forces working against the President as northern elites, Middle Belt leaders, disaffected business interests, and retired military and political power brokers, urging Tinubu to act decisively to counter their influence.

The Ohanaeze chieftain also called on the President to consider granting a pardon to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, describing it as a strategic move that could help stabilise the South-East ahead of the 2027 polls.

He suggested that timing such a pardon to coincide with a significant national date, such as June 12 or October 1, could help reduce secessionist tensions in the region and deny the opposition a potent mobilisation tool.

Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress has also intensified its criticism of the Tinubu administration, with the party insisting that removing the President from office is central to resolving Nigeria’s governance challenges.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi said the opposition’s priority was to end Tinubu’s tenure, alleging that the country had been “hijacked” under the current administration.

Abdullahi also raised concerns over alleged legislative manipulation, controversial tax laws and the reported payment of $9 million to foreign lobbyists, questioning the transparency of the process and accusing the government of undermining democratic norms.

My Successor In 2031 Will Be Better Than Me, Says Governor Otti

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has expressed confidence that whoever succeeds him in 2031 will perform even better, noting that his administration is laying a strong and irreversible foundation for the state’s development.

The governor stated this on Sunday during a reception service organised in his honour by the Assemblies of God Church, Okaiuga–Nkwoegwu, in Umuahia North Local Government Area.

Otti said his administration was still in its early years, stressing that the period ahead would witness aggressive and sustained development across the state.

He added that the longstanding challenges that hindered Abia’s growth had been overcome.

According to him, Abia has entered a new phase of progress that cannot be reversed, insisting that those expecting a return to the old order are “dreaming.”

“We have just started. We are not even three years old yet. By the time we are done in 2031, the results will speak for themselves. This is the season for the aggressive development of Abia State, and the curse that held us down has been broken,” Otti said.

He added that his confidence in the future of the state was rooted in his belief that power ultimately belongs to God, noting that divine timing plays a critical role in leadership and governance.

Responding to requests by the church for support, the governor announced that a Hummer bus for evangelism would be delivered within the week, courtesy of Prince Arthur Eze.

He also directed his Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, to engage with church leaders on the allocation of land for a proposed prayer camp.

Otti thanked churches across the state for their support and prayers, while expressing appreciation to the Assemblies of God Church for the reception organised in his honour.

Earlier, the District Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church, Jerusalem District, Rev. Dr Kenneth Ogbudu, described Governor Otti as a transformational leader whose emergence had marked a clear departure from past administrations in Abia State.

He said the governor’s leadership had introduced governance driven by competence, transparency and accountability, citing the reconstruction of long-abandoned roads, improved fiscal discipline and the regular payment of salaries and pensions as key achievements.

According to Ogbudu, the administration’s reforms have restored public confidence, revived economic activities and repositioned Abia State as an attractive destination for investment.

The reception was attended by the wife of the governor, Mrs Priscilla Otti; the member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Hon. Obi Aguocha; the Deputy Speaker and other members of the Abia State House of Assembly; the Chief of Staff; commissioners, special advisers, senior government officials and other dignitaries.

Support Group Disowns Atiku’s Son, Expels Him Over APC Defection

The Atiku Haske Organisation has disowned and expelled Abba Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, following his defection to the All Progressives Congress and his directive that members of the group should join him in the ruling party.

The group said Abba lacked the authority to determine its political direction, insisting that he was neither its founder nor a financier of its activities.

Abba had, after announcing his defection to the APC on Thursday, instructed coordinators and members of his political structure to defect en masse and mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He also called for the renaming of the group to the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation.

However, reacting in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, the initiator and convener of the Atiku Haske Organisation, Mai Nagge Bakari, said Abba was only an invited member and had no legal or moral standing to issue directives on behalf of the organisation.

Bakari stated that Abba neither contributed financially to the group nor held its registration documents, stressing that the organisation was founded independently of him.

According to the statement, the group had collectively resolved to move from the Peoples Democratic Party to the African Democratic Congress and had no intention of defecting to any other party.

Describing Abba’s action as a violation of the group’s resolutions, values and principles, Bakari announced his immediate expulsion from the organisation, declaring his directive to defect to the APC “null and void.”

The group reaffirmed its loyalty to Atiku Abubakar, describing him as the candidate best suited to advance its objectives, and warned Abba to stop identifying himself as a member.

Abba Atiku was received into the APC on Thursday at the National Assembly complex in Abuja by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, and other party leaders from the North-East.

He pledged support for President Tinubu’s second-term bid and announced the renaming of his political structure to align with the President’s 2027 re-election campaign.

Enugu Police Arrest Four ‘One-Chance’ Robbery Suspects, Intensify Manhunt For Others

CP Giwa,

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested four suspected members of a notorious “one-chance” robbery syndicate operating within Abakpa-Nike and other parts of Enugu metropolis.

Operatives attached to the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Squad arrested the suspects on January 10, 2026, at about 9:00 a.m., while they were allegedly prowling for unsuspecting victims with a tricycle, which was recovered during the operation.

A statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, identified the suspects as Ndubuisi Achioko, 62; Nnaji Okeh, 55; Nwobodo Dennis, 57; and Chinedu Idam, 36, all residents of Abakpa-Nike, Enugu.

According to the police, the suspects confessed during interrogation to being members of a larger “one-chance” robbery syndicate operating mainly from the Abakpa-Nike axis of the state.

The suspects have since been arraigned before a competent court and remanded in Correctional Custody, while police have intensified efforts to identify, track and arrest other fleeing members of the syndicate.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to rid the state of “one-chance” robbery and other criminal activities.

He urged residents to remain vigilant, law-abiding and proactive by promptly reporting suspicious movements and criminal activities to the nearest police station or through established police emergency channels.

Ekiti 2026: PDP Heads To Appeal Court, Insists Oluyede Remains Candidate

The Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State has appealed the judgment of the Federal High Court that nullified its governorship primary election which produced Dr Wole Oluyede as its candidate for the June 20, 2026 governorship poll.

The party said it had approached the Court of Appeal to overturn the ruling and had also filed an application for a stay of execution, insisting that Oluyede remains its duly nominated candidate pending the outcome of the appeal.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday in Ado Ekiti by the Director of Media and Communication of the Ekiti PDP Governorship Campaign Council, Sanya Atofarati.

According to Atofarati, the notice of appeal and the stay application effectively preserve the status quo, stressing that the judgment does not invalidate Oluyede’s candidacy until a superior court decides otherwise.

He maintained that Oluyede emerged from a valid primary election that was properly conducted and monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Atofarati said the party was undeterred by ongoing litigation and political pressure, adding that the PDP remained focused on reclaiming power from the All Progressives Congress in the 2026 election.

He accused the APC of attempting to exploit the court ruling to destabilise the opposition, noting that the situation had instead strengthened the PDP’s resolve and highlighted what he described as the failures of the ruling party in Ekiti State.

According to him, pensioners are owed arrears, major roads are in poor condition, the education sector has deteriorated, businesses are burdened by multiple taxation and public infrastructure has suffered neglect.

Atofarati also alleged that the APC-led administration was unpopular, even within its own ranks, accusing it of suppressing internal dissent by avoiding credible primary elections.

He stressed that the PDP had not withdrawn recognition of Oluyede as its governorship candidate and would only do so if compelled by the final decision of a superior court.

The party further alleged that the omission of Oluyede’s name from INEC’s provisional list of candidates was a deliberate attempt to unlawfully exclude the PDP from the ballot, adding that it had already taken legal steps to compel the electoral body to act in line with the law.

The PDP urged its members and supporters to remain united and intensify grassroots mobilisation, including active participation in the ongoing INEC voter registration exercise ahead of the election.

It will be recalled that the Federal High Court last week nullified the PDP governorship primaries held on November 8, 2025, following a suit filed by one of the aspirants, Funso Ayeni, and ordered the conduct of a fresh primary election.

FG Slams Criminal Charges On Ozekhome Over Alleged Forgery In UK Property Dispute

The Federal Government has filed criminal charges against Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome, over alleged forgery and use of false documents linked to a disputed property in the United Kingdom.

Ozekhome, 68, is being prosecuted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, according to court documents obtained on Sunday.

The three-count charge was filed on Friday before a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja on behalf of the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi.

The charges were instituted by the ICPC’s Head of High Profile Prosecution Department, Osuobeni Akponimisingha, alongside Assistant Chief Legal Officer, Ngozi Onwuka.

According to the charge sheet, the senior lawyer is accused of knowingly presenting forged documents, including a Nigerian passport, to support a claim of ownership of a property located at 79 Randall Avenue, London NW2 7SX, during proceedings before the London First-Tier Tribunal.

The alleged offences were said to have been committed in August 2021, partly in London and partly in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of the FCT High Court.

In the first count, Ozekhome is accused of directly receiving the London property, allegedly given to him by one Shani Tali, in a transaction the prosecution claims constitutes a felony under the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.

The second count alleges that he made a false Nigerian passport bearing the name of Shani Tali with the intent to use it to support his claim of ownership of the London property, contrary to provisions of the Penal Code applicable in the FCT.

The third count accuses him of dishonestly using the allegedly forged passport as a genuine document to advance the property claim, despite having reason to believe it was false.

The Federal Government has listed several witnesses it intends to call at trial, including ICPC investigators and a representative of the Nigerian Immigration Service.

Documents expected to be tendered include the judgment of the London First-Tier Tribunal, extra-judicial statements, official correspondence and passport data relating to Shani Tali.

The case is yet to be assigned a hearing date, while Ozekhome has not made any official public comment on the charges as of the time of filing this report.

The charges arise from a long-running property dispute in the United Kingdom involving Ozekhome and the late former minister, Jeremiah Useni.

The matter was heard by the First-tier Tribunal (Property Chamber) Land Registration in the UK, where competing claims were made by persons identified as Mr and Ms Tali Shani.

In its ruling, the tribunal dismissed all claims after finding that neither Mr nor Ms Tali Shani existed, declaring Useni as the lawful owner of the property.
