Gov. Mbah Relocates Enugu Coal Camp Spare Parts Market

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has signed an Executive Order to relocate the Coal Camp Spare Parts Market and all related industrial and commercial activities within the Enugu Capital Territory to a newly designated International Spare Parts and Allied Trades Park.

The new market site, strategically positioned along the Enugu-Onitsha Road, spans Udi and Ezeagu Local Government Areas.

The Executive Order, titled “Designation and Establishment of the Enugu International Motor Spare Parts and Allied Traders Park, Nsude, Udi LGA, and Ogwofia Owa in Ezeagu LGA and the Relocation of the Coal Camp Neighborhood and Other Neighborhoods in the Enugu Capital Territory”, marks a significant step in Governor Mbah’s infrastructural transformation agenda.

At the signing ceremony held at the Government House on Friday, which was witnessed by the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, and representatives of Enugu spare parts dealers, the governor assured stakeholders that the new market would eliminate the structural and operational challenges of the existing one.

“This new market is actually a purpose-built vehicle because it is designed for a market in the true sense of the word and with all the supporting facilities. We have taken into account all the safety codes that are required to have an international market,” Mbah stated.

“As you may already be aware, the construction is ongoing. We are aggressively opening up the roads and also the building itself. That construction has commenced.

“Our hope is that in the next few months, we are going to see the movement of you all from the current location to an international market where we have provided all the services. There is going to be a clinic and fire service there. There is going to be a truck park.

“All the errors, all the challenges and the problems we have in the existing market will all be addressed in the new market.

“We have also made sure that you do not live very far from your market. We have residences around the market. It is an ideal neighborhood concept where you can live comfortably within your neighborhood and still do your trading and businesses comfortably without traveling far to get things done.”

The decision has been met with excitement among traders, as expressed by the President of the Enugu Motor Spare Parts Dealers Association, Chief Michael Nomeh.

“We are so excited about the relocation of the Enugu motor spare parts dealers to the permanent site, which is of international standard,” Nomeh said.

“We thank the governor for the campaign promise that he has fulfilled. Since the inception of democracy in 1999 to date, there have been so many promises to our people that they will relocate us to the international market.”

“But none of them has kept to their promises. That is why we appreciate the governor for keeping the campaign promises less than two years in office. He is a governor who does exactly what he says he would do.”

Speaking on the economic impact of the relocation, Dr. Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo, the Managing Director of the Enugu State Investment Development Authority, emphasized the strategic nature of the move and the benefits awaiting traders at the new site.

“This move is a strategic one aimed at boosting our state economy in our drive to a $30bn GDP economy,” Ogbu-Nwobodo noted.

“If you know the location of the new place, it is so strategic. You cannot go from the Middle Belt or South South or Cross River or even from Cameroon to Onitsha without passing through there.

“The government is not building to make profit, but for the traders to move to a well-organised and safe environment for trading and living.

“The place is designed to have the commercial sections with shops of different categories, warehouses, workshops, ample parking spaces, water, power, and other utilities facilities.

“There are also residential areas. There are also going to be smart schools, the primary healthcare centers, the fire service station, Police station, the recreational park, and a football pitch. It is a modern place that everybody will be proud to live in. It is built for modern spare part and allied trade professionals.”

Tinubu Has Failed Us, Despite His Troubled Past – El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has expressed deep regret over his support for President Bola Tinubu, citing what he describes as the president’s failure to meet expectations despite a controversial past marred by allegations of drug-related offenses and certificate forgery.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, El-Rufai admitted that he and others backed Tinubu despite being aware of his legal and ethical controversies, particularly his alleged involvement in narcotics trafficking and the disputed authenticity of his academic credentials.

“What pains me the most is that we supported and had confidence in this government, believing it would deliver results,” El-Rufai stated.

“We saw what Tinubu did in Lagos despite his challenges, and we thought if he could replicate that at the national level, it would be worth it. But, unfortunately, he has failed.”

Referencing Tinubu’s past legal troubles in the United States, El-Rufai acknowledged that supporters were aware of the accusations but hoped his performance as Lagos State governor would translate into national development.

“We all knew about his issues in Chicago, but we overlooked them, thinking his governance experience in Lagos would benefit Nigeria,” he said.

The controversy over Tinubu’s past resurfaced in 2022 when newly unsealed court documents from the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois detailed his alleged connection to narcotics trafficking and money laundering, leading to a forfeiture of $460,000 to the U.S. government in 1993.

Additionally, his academic records came under scrutiny after opposition leader, Atiku Abubakar, petitioned the courts to compel Chicago State University (CSU) to release details of Tinubu’s educational history, alleging certificate forgery.

Despite these controversies, El-Rufai and other political allies stood by Tinubu, hoping he would deliver on his campaign promises.

However, the former governor now laments that their expectations have not been met, marking a turning point in his public stance on the Tinubu administration.

INEC Begins Preparations For 2027 General Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced work on its Election Project Plan (EPP) for the 2027 general elections, incorporating lessons learned from the 2023 polls to improve efficiency and transparency.

A senior INEC official to DAILY GAZETTE confirmed that the commission is updating its election templates and refining strategies to enhance the credibility of future elections.

Part of this effort includes developing a 2027–2031 Strategic Plan, which will replace the current 2022 – 2026 Strategic Plan set to expire in December 2026.

Additionally, INEC is working on a transitional document to bridge the gap between 2026 and the 2027 election year, ensuring continuity in election planning.

“The previous strategic plan focused on institutionalizing INEC’s processes, capacity building, and resource management, while the EPP is a more focused document designed specifically for the conduct of a general election,” the official explained.

The Election Project Plan was first introduced for the 2015 general election and has since been a key part of INEC’s preparations for the 2019 and 2023 elections.

Following logistical and technical challenges in the 2023 general election, INEC is reviewing its operational framework to enhance efficiency.

The last election involved 93,469,008 registered voters across 176,846 polling units, requiring the deployment of over 1.5 million personnel and 182,491 vehicles to facilitate the process nationwide.

One of the major setbacks in 2023 was the delay in uploading presidential election results to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal, despite successfully managing uploads for National Assembly elections.

A configuration issue in the system caused delays in processing nationwide presidential results.

INEC later resolved the issue through a software update, allowing the first presidential election result sheet to be uploaded later on election day.

Anambra Govt Bans Use Of Mobile Phones In Secondary Schools

The Anambra State Government has prohibited the use of mobile phones by students in secondary schools across the state to minimize distractions and improve academic performance.

The Chairman of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission, Prof. Nkechi Ikediugwu, announced the ban on Friday during the Anambra Schools’ Cultural Day celebration in Awka.

She directed school principals and teachers to confiscate any mobile phones found with students during school hours.

According to Ikediugwu, the decision aims to restore focus and discipline in schools, as the increasing use of mobile phones has become a major distraction to students’ learning.

“I am authorizing principals and teachers to seize phones from students who bring them to school. This will help ensure that students concentrate on their academic work without unnecessary distractions,” she stated.

She emphasized that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration is making significant investments in education to promote excellence and instill discipline among students.

Speaking at the event, Ikediugwu also highlighted the importance of preserving Igbo traditions, describing them as a vital part of the people’s identity.

“Igbo culture is more than just clothing and dance. The Igbos are known for their honesty, truthfulness, hard work, and respect for elders. It is important to continuously educate our students on these values to uphold the rich heritage of the Igbo people,” she said.

Nigeria’s Unemployment Rate Alarming – Senate Minority Whip Tasks FG To Take Action

Senate Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu, has raised concerns over Nigeria’s growing unemployment crisis, urging the federal and state governments, as well as the private sector, to take immediate and decisive action.

In a statement released on Friday, the senator representing Enugu West described the situation as alarming, stressing that urgent measures were needed to prevent further economic and social distress.

Ngwu pointed out that Nigerian universities and polytechnics produce around 600,000 graduates annually, yet job creation has not kept pace, leading to a significant gap between the labor market’s supply and demand.

“Unemployment in Nigeria has remained an unresolved issue since the Second Republic. With approximately 2 million students admitted into tertiary institutions annually and about 600,000 graduates entering the job market each year, the country faces a widening gap between job seekers and available employment opportunities,” he said.

While acknowledging President Bola Tinubu’s economic initiatives aimed at job creation, food security, and poverty reduction, Ngwu emphasized that declaring a state of emergency on unemployment would accelerate these efforts.

“I commend President Tinubu’s commitment to remodeling Nigeria’s economy, but we need urgent action. Declaring a state of emergency on unemployment will fast-track policies aimed at job creation, stimulate economic growth, and reduce poverty,” he added.

Ngwu announced his intention to present a motion in the Senate, urging the Federal Government to formally declare a state of emergency on the country’s unemployment crisis.

“In the coming days, I will bring a motion before the Senate calling for immediate government intervention. We cannot afford to ignore the plight of our unemployed youths. Governments at all levels and the private sector must collaborate to create jobs and opportunities. We owe this to our people and the future of our nation,” he stated.

Nigerian Students In US Face Possible Deportation As Trump Enforces Stricter Immigration Policies

Nigerian students in the United States could face deportation as the Trump administration intensifies efforts to remove foreign nationals deemed not to be in the country’s best interest.

Following a surge in international student enrollment in 2024, Nigeria ranked seventh globally and first in Africa, with 20,029 Nigerian students enrolled in US institutions, a 13.5% increase from the previous academic year.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News, US Vice President JD Vance confirmed that the administration is prepared to deport foreign students if necessary, even those who entered the country legally.

“This isn’t just about national security; it’s about who gets to be part of our national community,” Vance said.

“If the president and secretary of state decide a person shouldn’t be here, and they have no legal right to stay, they will be removed.”

He also pointed out concerns about international students taking up spots in elite universities at the expense of American students.

“Many foreign students pay full tuition, and sometimes, a well-qualified middle-class American student is denied admission because a wealthy international student can afford to pay $100,000 a year,” he argued.

While the exact number of potential deportations remains uncertain, Vance suggested that more foreign students could be affected as the administration enforces stricter immigration policies.

Kano Emirate: Appeal Court Halts Sanusi’s Reinstatement Pending Supreme Court Judgment

In a new development in the Kano Emirate leadership dispute, the Court of Appeal in Abuja has put a hold on the enforcement of its January 10 judgment that upheld the Kano State Government’s repeal of the 2019 Emirate Council Law.

This decision will remain in effect until the Supreme Court delivers its verdict on the appeal.

The Court of Appeal in Kano had earlier set aside the June 20 order issued by Justice Abubakar Liman of the Federal High Court, Kano, which nullified actions taken by the Kano State Government under the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024, including the reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano.

The appellate court, which sat in Abuja, ruled that Justice Liman lacked jurisdiction when he nullified the Kano State Government’s decisions under the 2024 Emirates Council Law.

Following this ruling, the Kano State Government challenged the judgment at the Supreme Court and subsequently filed an injunction at the Court of Appeal, requesting a stay of execution while the Supreme Court deliberates on the matter.

On Friday, a three-member panel of justices led by Justice Okon Abang delivered a ruling on the injunction in two cases; CA/KN/27M/2025 and CA/KN/28M/2025, filed by Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan against the Kano State Government, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, the Inspector General of Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and other security agencies.

Aminu Babba Dan (Sarkin Dawaki Babba) had submitted an application on February 6, 2025, seeking an order to prevent the respondents from enforcing the appellate court’s judgment while the case remains pending at the Supreme Court.

According to the application, the initial suit in Kano was intended to protect the applicant’s fundamental rights, and the trial court lacked jurisdiction over the matter.

The application also sought to prevent the enforcement of the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024, which had dissolved newly created emirates and reinstated Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano.

In a unanimous ruling, the panel of justices, led by Abang, determined that the application was well-founded and warranted judicial discretion in the interest of justice.

The law is settled. The court is enjoined to exercise its discretion judiciously and in the interest of justice,” Abang stated.

He further ruled, The mandatory injunction is ordered that shall maintain the status quo ante bellum as well as the sheriff of this court and trial court as was the position before the trial court in its delivered on 13/6/2024 in the suit no. FHC/KN/CS/182/2024.”

Justice Abang explained that the applicant had met all necessary legal requirements for the relief sought.

Since the Supreme Court is already considering an appeal, it was crucial to preserve the matter until a final ruling is made.

He also emphasized that the applicant’s legal rights should be protected, noting that he had served as Emir for five years before his removal.

In my view, I hold that the balance of convenience lies in his favour. It is deserving to protect him pending the determination of the Supreme Court,” Abang ruled.

The court subsequently restrained the respondents from executing the January 10 judgment, which had nullified the Kano State Government’s dissolution of the emirates.

It also maintained the status quo until the Supreme Court delivers its verdict.

Additionally, the applicant was instructed to file an undertaking within 14 days, agreeing to indemnify the respondents in damages should the order prove unnecessary.

The Court of Appeal’s January 10 judgment had previously overturned a Federal High Court ruling that nullified the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024.

This law had reversed the creation of five new emirates and reinstated Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as Emir of Kano.

In its judgment, the Court of Appeal ruled that the Federal High Court had no jurisdiction over chieftaincy matters, which fall under the exclusive jurisdiction of state high courts.
