Anambra Govt Bans Use Of Mobile Phones In Secondary Schools

The Anambra State Government has prohibited the use of mobile phones by students in secondary schools across the state to minimize distractions and improve academic performance.

The Chairman of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission, Prof. Nkechi Ikediugwu, announced the ban on Friday during the Anambra Schools’ Cultural Day celebration in Awka.

She directed school principals and teachers to confiscate any mobile phones found with students during school hours.

According to Ikediugwu, the decision aims to restore focus and discipline in schools, as the increasing use of mobile phones has become a major distraction to students’ learning.

“I am authorizing principals and teachers to seize phones from students who bring them to school. This will help ensure that students concentrate on their academic work without unnecessary distractions,” she stated.

She emphasized that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration is making significant investments in education to promote excellence and instill discipline among students.

Speaking at the event, Ikediugwu also highlighted the importance of preserving Igbo traditions, describing them as a vital part of the people’s identity.

“Igbo culture is more than just clothing and dance. The Igbos are known for their honesty, truthfulness, hard work, and respect for elders. It is important to continuously educate our students on these values to uphold the rich heritage of the Igbo people,” she said.

Nigeria’s Unemployment Rate Alarming – Senate Minority Whip Tasks FG To Take Action

Senate Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu, has raised concerns over Nigeria’s growing unemployment crisis, urging the federal and state governments, as well as the private sector, to take immediate and decisive action.

In a statement released on Friday, the senator representing Enugu West described the situation as alarming, stressing that urgent measures were needed to prevent further economic and social distress.

Ngwu pointed out that Nigerian universities and polytechnics produce around 600,000 graduates annually, yet job creation has not kept pace, leading to a significant gap between the labor market’s supply and demand.

“Unemployment in Nigeria has remained an unresolved issue since the Second Republic. With approximately 2 million students admitted into tertiary institutions annually and about 600,000 graduates entering the job market each year, the country faces a widening gap between job seekers and available employment opportunities,” he said.

While acknowledging President Bola Tinubu’s economic initiatives aimed at job creation, food security, and poverty reduction, Ngwu emphasized that declaring a state of emergency on unemployment would accelerate these efforts.

“I commend President Tinubu’s commitment to remodeling Nigeria’s economy, but we need urgent action. Declaring a state of emergency on unemployment will fast-track policies aimed at job creation, stimulate economic growth, and reduce poverty,” he added.

Ngwu announced his intention to present a motion in the Senate, urging the Federal Government to formally declare a state of emergency on the country’s unemployment crisis.

“In the coming days, I will bring a motion before the Senate calling for immediate government intervention. We cannot afford to ignore the plight of our unemployed youths. Governments at all levels and the private sector must collaborate to create jobs and opportunities. We owe this to our people and the future of our nation,” he stated.

Nigerian Students In US Face Possible Deportation As Trump Enforces Stricter Immigration Policies

Nigerian students in the United States could face deportation as the Trump administration intensifies efforts to remove foreign nationals deemed not to be in the country’s best interest.

Following a surge in international student enrollment in 2024, Nigeria ranked seventh globally and first in Africa, with 20,029 Nigerian students enrolled in US institutions, a 13.5% increase from the previous academic year.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News, US Vice President JD Vance confirmed that the administration is prepared to deport foreign students if necessary, even those who entered the country legally.

“This isn’t just about national security; it’s about who gets to be part of our national community,” Vance said.

“If the president and secretary of state decide a person shouldn’t be here, and they have no legal right to stay, they will be removed.”

He also pointed out concerns about international students taking up spots in elite universities at the expense of American students.

“Many foreign students pay full tuition, and sometimes, a well-qualified middle-class American student is denied admission because a wealthy international student can afford to pay $100,000 a year,” he argued.

While the exact number of potential deportations remains uncertain, Vance suggested that more foreign students could be affected as the administration enforces stricter immigration policies.

Kano Emirate: Appeal Court Halts Sanusi’s Reinstatement Pending Supreme Court Judgment

In a new development in the Kano Emirate leadership dispute, the Court of Appeal in Abuja has put a hold on the enforcement of its January 10 judgment that upheld the Kano State Government’s repeal of the 2019 Emirate Council Law.

This decision will remain in effect until the Supreme Court delivers its verdict on the appeal.

The Court of Appeal in Kano had earlier set aside the June 20 order issued by Justice Abubakar Liman of the Federal High Court, Kano, which nullified actions taken by the Kano State Government under the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024, including the reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano.

The appellate court, which sat in Abuja, ruled that Justice Liman lacked jurisdiction when he nullified the Kano State Government’s decisions under the 2024 Emirates Council Law.

Following this ruling, the Kano State Government challenged the judgment at the Supreme Court and subsequently filed an injunction at the Court of Appeal, requesting a stay of execution while the Supreme Court deliberates on the matter.

On Friday, a three-member panel of justices led by Justice Okon Abang delivered a ruling on the injunction in two cases; CA/KN/27M/2025 and CA/KN/28M/2025, filed by Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan against the Kano State Government, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, the Inspector General of Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and other security agencies.

Aminu Babba Dan (Sarkin Dawaki Babba) had submitted an application on February 6, 2025, seeking an order to prevent the respondents from enforcing the appellate court’s judgment while the case remains pending at the Supreme Court.

According to the application, the initial suit in Kano was intended to protect the applicant’s fundamental rights, and the trial court lacked jurisdiction over the matter.

The application also sought to prevent the enforcement of the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024, which had dissolved newly created emirates and reinstated Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano.

In a unanimous ruling, the panel of justices, led by Abang, determined that the application was well-founded and warranted judicial discretion in the interest of justice.

The law is settled. The court is enjoined to exercise its discretion judiciously and in the interest of justice,” Abang stated.

He further ruled, The mandatory injunction is ordered that shall maintain the status quo ante bellum as well as the sheriff of this court and trial court as was the position before the trial court in its delivered on 13/6/2024 in the suit no. FHC/KN/CS/182/2024.”

Justice Abang explained that the applicant had met all necessary legal requirements for the relief sought.

Since the Supreme Court is already considering an appeal, it was crucial to preserve the matter until a final ruling is made.

He also emphasized that the applicant’s legal rights should be protected, noting that he had served as Emir for five years before his removal.

In my view, I hold that the balance of convenience lies in his favour. It is deserving to protect him pending the determination of the Supreme Court,” Abang ruled.

The court subsequently restrained the respondents from executing the January 10 judgment, which had nullified the Kano State Government’s dissolution of the emirates.

It also maintained the status quo until the Supreme Court delivers its verdict.

Additionally, the applicant was instructed to file an undertaking within 14 days, agreeing to indemnify the respondents in damages should the order prove unnecessary.

The Court of Appeal’s January 10 judgment had previously overturned a Federal High Court ruling that nullified the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024.

This law had reversed the creation of five new emirates and reinstated Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as Emir of Kano.

In its judgment, the Court of Appeal ruled that the Federal High Court had no jurisdiction over chieftaincy matters, which fall under the exclusive jurisdiction of state high courts.

Ramadan: Catholic Bishops Demand Reopening Of Schools Closed In Northern Nigeria

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has called on state governments that ordered the closure of schools due to the ongoing Ramadan fast to reconsider their decision.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its first plenary meeting for 2025, the CBCN, led by its President, Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru, urged the governments of Bauchi, Katsina, Kebbi, and Kano states to reopen the affected schools.

The bishops emphasized that every child has a right to education and that Nigeria, as a multi-religious society, should not implement policies that restrict access to learning.

We demand that those governments that ordered the closure of all schools in some parts of the country withdraw such an order in light of the rights of children to education and the multi-religious nature of our society,” Iwejuru stated.

The bishops reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s commitment to providing education, healthcare, and agricultural development to foster national growth.

They emphasized the need for an enabling environment to continue their contributions in these areas.

Additionally, Iwejuru called on political, religious, and traditional leaders to encourage national unity and integration, stressing the importance of instilling hope and development among Nigerians.

He also urged citizens to remain vocal about their rights and not succumb to silence in the face of socio-economic and security challenges.

We, as a people, must refuse to be cowed into silence and helplessness. Instead, we should insist on doing the right thing and ensuring that justice prevails,” he said.

The bishops acknowledged that Nigeria is still grappling with numerous difficulties, including rising food prices, economic hardship, youth unemployment, and persistent insecurity, including kidnappings and killings.

They encouraged actions that foster national unity and social stability.

Despite these challenges, Iwejuru noted that Nigeria has seen some positive developments, including efforts to revamp the petroleum sector, improve road infrastructure, and introduce economic policies like the student loan scheme, a new minimum wage proposal, and a revised tax system.

The reinvigoration of the petroleum industry, the rehabilitation of dilapidated roads, and the construction of new ones across the nation are commendable,” he stated.

He also praised government initiatives to boost agricultural production and commended security operatives who risk their lives to combat crime.

Furthermore, Iwejuru stressed the need to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system by ensuring transparency and accountability in institutions like the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and the judiciary.

To restore public trust in our electoral system, it is essential to strengthen our laws and ensure that state agents carry out their duties with sincerity,” he concluded.

Former El-Rufai Commissioner Arrested Days After Leaving APC

Jafaru Ibrahim Sani, a former commissioner in the administration of ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai, was arrested by security agents in Kaduna on Thursday, just days after leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sani was reportedly picked up by officers from Operation Fushin KADA around 10:45 am, shortly after leaving his residence in the Kaduna metropolis.

Sources close to him said he was taken to a court on Daura Road before being remanded in a correctional facility.

Sani was among six former commissioners who recently resigned from the APC, following El-Rufai’s defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Efforts to get a response from the Kaduna State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, were unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, El-Rufai has condemned the arrest, linking it to political persecution following Sani’s defection.

In a statement, El-Rufai alleged that Sani was taken away in broad daylight by individuals falsely posing as police officers.

He compared the incident to that of another former official, Bashir Saidu, who was allegedly detained for 50 days before being granted bail.

The former governor also claimed that Sani was remanded in prison without formal charges or a First Information Report (FIR) from the police or the Kaduna State Ministry of Justice.

He further disclosed that Sani is now facing money laundering charges, an offence he argued falls outside the jurisdiction of the state judiciary and police.

Governor Otti Approves N1bn For Abia Health Insurance Scheme

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has approved N1 billion for the Abia State Health Insurance Scheme following the State Executive Council’s approval for its formal rollout.

In addition, the governor has appointed Dr. Emmanuel Mereibeole, a retired Permanent Secretary from the Federal Ministry of Aviation, as Special Adviser on Projects to oversee the Abia Airport project.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, and the Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Uche, disclosed these developments during a press briefing on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting.

Kanu emphasized the importance of the scheme, stating: This is one of the health schemes that underscores the high premium the administration places on the health sector. It’s a scheme that will grant Abia workers and indeed Abia citizenry access to affordable healthcare services upon rollout.”

Professor Uche elaborated on the scheme’s purpose, explaining that it aims to address the healthcare needs of Abia workers and their dependents.

He further clarified the financial structure, noting: N500 million out of the N1 billion approved by the Governor would be paid in the first tranche, while the balance would be released after six months.”

He also stated that the governor had directed a three-month sensitization campaign for workers to ensure they understand and embrace the initiative.

According to Uche, As you all know, the basic healthcare provider fund, which provides for the vulnerable groups, is already on. As we speak, over 54,000 enrollees in that basic health insurance fund are already benefiting from the scheme.”

Regarding funding, he explained: By law, every civil servant is supposed to contribute five percent of his basic salary to the insurance scheme, whereas the state will contribute 10 percent. But the Governor has approved that the state will pay 12.5 percent to start with for the first six months, whereas each civil servant will contribute 2.5 percent.”

Meanwhile, Prince Kanu provided updates on “Project Ekwueme,” an initiative to construct 200 primary health centers across the 184 wards in the state.

He noted: “What that means is that very soon, the project will be completed and ready for commissioning.”

On water projects, he stated that the Ministry of Power and Public Utilities is making steady progress, adding: I want to inform you that the water project they embarked upon at Aro Ajatakiri is 100 percent completed. The other water projects they embarked upon in Aro Achara in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government and at Umuetigha Nvosi in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area have reached advanced stages of completion.”

Kanu also highlighted the ministry’s work on the Water Supply and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) Programme, explaining that it involves constructing modern toilet facilities to discourage open defecation.

On the recruitment of teachers, he clarified that the reopening of the application portal from March 8 to 12 was to assist applicants who encountered issues while uploading their bio-data, phone numbers, LGAs, and other necessary details.

Regarding Dr. Mereibeole’s appointment, Kanu stated: The newly appointed Adviser on Projects, Dr. Mereibeole, had served as Chief Policy Adviser to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development.” He added that Mereibeole would play a crucial role in overseeing the Abia Airport project.

Also present at the press briefing were the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media & Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma.

Tinubu Will Be Voted Out In 2027, SDP Will Produce Next President – Adebayo

SDP logo,

Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has declared that President Bola Tinubu will be removed from office in the 2027 elections.

Speaking on The Morning Show on Arise Television on Friday, Adebayo expressed confidence that his party, the SDP, would produce Nigeria’s next president.

Tinubu is going to be removed from power, that one is sure, and there would be an SDP president,” he asserted.

Adebayo also reaffirmed his intention to contest the presidency in 2027, stating that he is confident he will secure the SDP ticket regardless of the political figures joining the party.

Let us understand something. I don’t worry about that; everybody who is coming in knows I will run in 2027. Any coward who will feel threatened by people coming to his party cannot be president,” he stated.

His remarks come in the wake of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s defection to the SDP on Monday.

Since joining the party, El-Rufai has been making political moves to attract more politicians to the SDP.

Addressing El-Rufai’s defection, Adebayo described him as a patriotic Nigerian, hardworking, and very effective in an area where we don’t have effective people in government.”

“The reason why I welcome El-Rufai to my party is that I see him as a patriotic Nigerian, hardworking, very effective in an area where we don’t have effective people in government, that’s all,” Adebayo added.
