Catholic Priest, Seminarian Kidnapped

Armed assailants attacked St. Peter Catholic Church in Iviukhua-Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State on Monday night, abducting the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Philip Ekweli, and a major seminarian.

The Catholic Diocese of Auchi confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, revealing that the gunmen stormed the church premises around 9:30 pm, forcibly breaking doors and windows while firing gunshots.

Local vigilantes attempted to repel the attackers but were overpowered, allowing the criminals to escape with the priest and the seminarian into the nearby forest.

As of Tuesday morning, there had been no communication from the kidnappers, and their demands remained unknown.

Reacting to the incident, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, Most Rev. Dr. Gabriel Dunia, lamented the growing insecurity in Edo North, describing it as a haven for kidnappers.

He decried the frequency of attacks on priests, noting that the Diocese, once known for its peace, has become a hotspot for criminal activities.

He urged the government to take urgent action to curb the rising wave of kidnappings in the state.

The Diocese of Auchi, inaugurated in 2003, has faced repeated attacks in recent years.

In the past five years alone, eight priests have been kidnapped, with one murdered in 2022.

The Church has called on the public to pray for the safe release of Fr. Ekweli and the seminarian, hoping they will return unharmed.

FG Ditches Remita, Introduces New Payment Platform For MDAs As Experts Call For Real Time Monitoring To Detect Irregularities

The Federal Government is moving to enhance revenue collection by introducing the Treasury Management and Revenue Assurance System (TMRAS), a new payment platform designed to complement the existing Treasury Single Account (TSA) system.

The move has sparked concerns among stakeholders, given that Remita, the payment gateway used since 2012, has faced scrutiny over allegations of non-remittance and inefficiencies.

While some speculate that the government is replacing Remita, the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) insists that the new system is meant to integrate multiple Payment Solution Service Providers (PSSPs), including Remita, to streamline payments across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

Officials argue that TMRAS will improve transparency, ensure timely remittances, and enable better monitoring of government transactions.

Despite these assurances, experts warn that merely changing platforms will not automatically solve issues of accountability and transparency.

They stress that revenue leakages often stem from weak internal controls, corruption, and poor enforcement of financial regulations. Prof. Godwin Oyedokun of Lead City University noted that even the most advanced payment system is ineffective if the data inputted is flawed.

He emphasized the need for robust internal controls, independent audits, and accountability measures to prevent financial mismanagement.

Another concern is cybersecurity. A tech expert cautioned that centralizing government payments under TMRAS could make it a prime target for cybercriminals.

They advised that the platform should include strong security protocols such as two-factor authentication and encryption to safeguard sensitive financial data.

Eze Onyekpere, Lead Director of the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ), also questioned the necessity of launching a new platform when existing gaps in Remita could be addressed at a lower cost.

He pointed out that Nigeria’s revenue challenges stem more from governance and structural inefficiencies than from payment platforms alone.

As the government prepares to implement TMRAS, stakeholders are calling for greater transparency on its objectives, implementation strategy, and potential impact on financial management.

The success of the initiative, they argue, will depend on proper oversight, security measures, and a commitment to addressing systemic governance issues beyond digital payment reforms.

Lagos Government Reaffirms Ban On Corporal Punishment In Schools

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its stance against flogging students in public schools, emphasizing counseling as the preferred corrective measure.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.

He reaffirmed that corporal punishment remains prohibited, stressing the need to prevent injuries, fainting, or potential fatalities resulting from physical discipline.

“There is an existing policy in Lagos and other parts of the country that prohibits teachers from administering corporal punishment on students,” Alli-Balogun stated.

“Instead of flogging, we have embraced counseling as a more effective way to correct behavior.”

He explained that minor disciplinary measures such as kneeling, picking dirt, or cutting grass within the school premises could be used when necessary.

“This approach is part of our positive reinforcement strategy, which helps shape student behavior and promote a more conducive learning environment,” he added.

The commissioner attributed some cases of student misconduct to inadequate parental guidance, urging parents to take greater responsibility for their children’s upbringing.

“As a government, we remain committed to eliminating indiscipline while ensuring a safe and friendly learning atmosphere for all students,” he said.

Alli-Balogun noted an improvement in student behavior since the state implemented its ban on corporal punishment in 2022, alongside the Safeguarding and Child Protection Programme in schools.

Opposition Lawmakers Caution Amaewhule-led Rivers Assembly Against Issuing Orders To Fubara

A coalition of opposition lawmakers has warned the Martin Amaewhule-led faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly against issuing directives to Governor Siminalayi Fubara while their defection case remains unresolved.

The warning follows a recent Supreme Court ruling that allowed the Amaewhule-led lawmakers to resume legislative duties.

However, opposition lawmakers insist that the legitimacy of their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is still under judicial scrutiny.

Speaking on behalf of the coalition, lawmaker Ikenga Ugochinyere criticized the faction for attempting to exert authority despite ongoing legal proceedings.

He specifically condemned their recent 48-hour ultimatum for Governor Fubara to sign the 2025 budget, calling it a desperate move to assert legitimacy.

“It is absurd that individuals whose defection remains a subject of litigation are attempting to direct a sitting governor on budgetary matters,” Ugochinyere said.

“The case challenging their illegal decampment is still before the Appeal Court, and it is concerning that the Supreme Court would grant them legitimacy while this fundamental issue is unresolved.”

He reiterated that the 27 lawmakers who defected to the APC had lost their seats by violating constitutional provisions and should refrain from interfering in the state’s governance.

“The pro-Wike group should understand that their defection renders them ineligible to function as lawmakers,” he added.

Channel Your Wealth Towards Developing The Southeast – Soludo Urges Igbo Entrepreneurs In Lagos

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has called on Igbo investors in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria to channel their wealth into developing the South-East, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing regional economic growth.

Speaking at the “Anambra Homeland Consciousness Initiative” event in Lagos, Soludo highlighted the entrepreneurial resilience of the Igbo people, describing them as a dynamic and industrious group capable of thriving in any environment.

“We, Ndigbo, have a unique ability to create wealth wherever we go. Like the cactus plant that flourishes even in the desert, we have demonstrated resilience in overcoming challenges. However, while we build and develop economies in other regions, we must also ensure that our homeland benefits from our investments,” he stated.

The governor stressed that the current political and economic realities demand a shift in focus, urging the Igbo community to embrace a “Homeland Consciousness” philosophy.

He noted that fostering economic development in the South-East would lead to self-sufficiency, increased opportunities, and long-term prosperity.

“We must build industrial hubs, modern cities, and business-friendly environments that attract both local and foreign investors. By doing so, we will create a sustainable future for the next generation,” Soludo added.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for investment, the governor assured potential investors of security, infrastructure development, and policies that will drive economic growth.

He urged Igbo entrepreneurs to take deliberate steps in reinvesting in their homeland, warning that continued neglect of the region could have long-term consequences.

“Charity begins at home. We must take ownership of our future and ensure that our economic strength translates into regional prosperity,” he concluded.

Soludo’s call comes amid growing concerns about the need for economic revitalization in the South-East, with many leaders advocating for strategic investments to transform the region into a major economic powerhouse.

Enugu 2027 And Options Before Chijioke Edeoga

By Sheddy Ozoene,

All through the last Yuletide, the grapevine in Enugu State was abuzz with speculations that Barr. Chijioke Edeoga, the Labour Party (LP) state governorship candidate in the 2023 election, was getting restless watching political actions from the sidelines.

Speculations centred on his possible move away from the party on which platform he came close to becoming the state’s helmsman, to either the All Progressives Congress (APC) that holds sway at the federal level or the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that was his nemesis in 2023.

Reports of his closed door meetings with leaders of the PDP in the state did not raise many eyebrows, and neither did his picture, which surfaced online with the state chairman of the APC, Barr. Ugochukwu Agballah and the Hon. Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Hon. Uche Nnaji.

Those who have followed his political trajectory in the past 2 years were prepared to swear they were mere pieces of propaganda.

That was until the event of Friday, January 31, 2025, gave flesh to the rumor when he hosted officials of the state PDP exco in his Enugu home.

The reality is that after evaluating the state’s political landscape and its changing dynamics, Edeoga appears to be considering dumping the LP for a new political platform.

The PDP visit was so well choreographed to massage his ego and provide him good reasons to decamp. In political parlance, it is called ‘soft landing’.

The team led by the state PDP Chairman, Martins Chinweike, explained that they were there on behalf of Governor Peter Mbah to ‘beg’ Edeoga to return to the party.

“We’re at the residence of His Excellency, Hon. Chijioke Edeoga…we’ve had a lot of discussions before now and today, we have come to consult with him and he’s very satisfied with our visit…I believe, from what he told us that we are going to have him back in the party.”

That to me was the clincher. Nothing can be more compelling than for a politician to be so openly ‘begged’ by a state governor.

Though Edeoga promised to respond to their request after consulting his supporters, one can correctly predict the outcome of the ‘consultation’.

Indeed, what transpired on Friday, January 31, was more of an engagement party between a beautiful political bride and the preferred suitor, the Peoples Democratic Party.

It should suffice at this point, therefore, to try making sense of the factors that brought Edeoga to this threshold.

To many, his possible political move sounds distasteful. Why would he abandon that platform that gave him fame and which became a rallying point against the PDP in Enugu State?

A good question, I dare say, except it brings us to another question: What other options does the man have? Events of the past 20 months have left him with only two options: to either stay back and languish in a party that has lost its soul or to seek new political adventures elsewhere. If he chooses the latter, the reasons are not far-fetched.

While opposition politics is essential for democracy, it has been difficult for him in the LP which now lacks basic organizational strength.

Like the fish that started rotting from the head, the once vibrant platform that was energized by Peter Obi in 2023 has become so debilitated by a festering leadership crisis at the national level which has weakened its structures down to the states, local government areas and the wards.

The scenario in Enugu State is even more pitiable as the party has become a shadow of itself in spite of its heroics in the last election.

Most of the 14 members elected as lawmakers to the state assembly have since decamped into the ruling PDP with only 6 of them still in the Labor Party.

For a man who left the PDP for the LP, Edeoga has found himself abandoned in the party and increasingly isolated from the two ends of the state’s political divide.

After a bruising electoral contest in which he was sapped psychologically and financially, he was ill-positioned to mount any strong opposition; the party’s elected officials who could have provided momentum, found it more expedient to join the ruling party in the state.

At the federal level, as many as 3 of the members in the House of Representatives, namely Barr. Cyriacus Umeha (Ezeagu/Udi) Hon. Sam Atu (Enugu North/Enugu South) and Hon. Chidi Obetta (Nsukka/Igboeze South) are believed to be aligning towards the APC.

So, who are still in the LP for Edeoga to consult? There are very few, indeed, and his promise to first consult his party leaders before giving the PDP a response was simply to fulfill all righteousness. The once-bubbling camp of the Labour Party in Enugu State has become deserted.

If indeed the speculation is true that he plans to defect to the APC or PDP, the big issue will be the moral question. It will be viewed as betrayal of the party that gave him the platform to challenge for the governorship in 2023.

For the thousands who viewed LP as a movement for political change, supported his ambition and braced the odds to vote for him, defection will smell like opportunism —using the party for personal gain and discarding it when convenient.

They would view him rightly or wrongly as a man who lacks credibility, one who prioritizes personal ambition over party loyalty.

But that will be one side of the coin.

In politics, ideological consistency is important, but so is political realism. The party Edeoga went into the contest with is no longer what it is today, and in the awkward position he finds himself today, his survival has become the overriding issue.

As the doctrine of political relevance emphasizes, a politician must remain active, strategically positioned, and influential to stay relevant. Idealists would always view it as detestable, yes, but that is the reality.

For a man who has been abandoned by the many elected officials on the party’s platform, Edeoga’s staying power must be running low, and he now runs the risk of fading into political obscurity and irrelevance.

In any case, has he been any use to the thousands of supporters who pinned their hopes – politically and economically – on him, and whom he is increasingly unable to cater for?

Edeoga finds himself at the crossroads and I don’t envy him a bit. While opting for the APC could position him for a strategic appointment at the federal level where he once served as a senior aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, the attraction to the PDP is more compelling, obviously.

The rumour is thick in the air that the PDP ticket for the Enugu East Senate for 2027 is already being dangled in his face. If that is true, it becomes much easier to picture him returning to the PDP, a platform which will allow him to rebuild old relationships and position himself as a key player in the party’s future.

It’s a choice between the symbolism that the Labour Party represents and the tangible opportunities of political relevance – the lifeblood of any politician’s career – that PDP now offers.

Most Nigerian politicians who faced similar situations before now, afraid they would end up in the political wilderness, followed their heads rather than their hearts.

The more reason anyone can wager that Edeoga will return to the party that he called home for over 23 years before the governorship contest took him away.

For the PDP and Governor Peter Mbah, who has indicated a personal interest in Edeoga’s return, it will be a win-win situation for both sides.

While the possibility of another potent challenge to the governor’s second term ambitions becomes more remote, having Edeoga on his side would allow him take some naps with both eyes closed as permutations commence for the 2027 elections.

Need For Creation Of Anioma State In South-East Long Overdue – Orji Uzor Kalu

Senator  Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North has expressed strong support for the creation of Anioma State from the present Delta State, arguing that it should be recognized as the sixth state in the South-East geopolitical zone.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Kalu, a former Abia State governor, emphasized that adding Anioma to the South-East would help address the long-standing issue of Igbo marginalization in Nigeria’s state structure.

“Anioma State should be created as the sixth South-East state. It is the only viable option,” Kalu said.

“Anioma people are Igbos, and they have never denied their identity.”

The proposal for Anioma State has been spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, who argues that its creation would correct a historical oversight and restore balance to Nigeria’s geopolitical arrangement.

Nwoko pointed out that the South-East is the only zone with just five states, compared to six in most other regions and seven in the North-West.

This imbalance, he noted, has led to fewer representatives from the South-East in the Senate (15 lawmakers) compared to 18 from other zones.

The proposed Anioma State would be carved out from nine local government areas in Delta State, aligning the South-East with the rest of the country in terms of state distribution.

Despite the strong advocacy for Anioma, the House of Representatives Committee on State Creation recently rejected all 31 proposals for new states across Nigeria, citing failure to meet constitutional requirements.

According to the committee, none of the requests—including that for Anioma—met the necessary legal and administrative conditions for consideration.

While the rejection presents a setback, proponents like Kalu and Nwoko remain hopeful that Anioma’s inclusion in the South-East will eventually gain political backing.

The issue continues to fuel discussions about equitable representation and structural reforms in Nigeria’s governance system.

Trump Stops Military Aid To Ukraine After Tense Exchange With Zelensky

U.S. President Donald Trump has suspended military aid to Ukraine, intensifying pressure on Kyiv to negotiate a peace deal with Russia, a White House official confirmed on Monday.

The decision follows a high-profile public clash between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as the U.S. leader pushes for a rapid end to the war.

The White House said the move was part of a broader review of American assistance to Ukraine to ensure it aligns with Washington’s foreign policy objectives.

“The President is focused on achieving peace. We need our partners to be equally committed to that goal,” a White House official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

“We are pausing and reassessing our aid to determine if it is contributing to a long-term solution.”

The suspension has drawn sharp criticism from Congressional Democrats, who argue it undermines Ukraine’s ability to defend itself.

Gregory Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, condemned the move as both dangerous and unlawful, urging Republican lawmakers to demand an immediate reversal.

Trump, however, defended his stance, insisting Zelensky must show “more appreciation” for U.S. support.

He warned that the Ukrainian leader “won’t be around very long” if he refuses to negotiate a ceasefire with Moscow.

According to The New York Times, the aid freeze takes immediate effect, affecting hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of military equipment currently en route to Ukraine.

The move could significantly weaken Ukraine’s ability to resist Russian forces, raising concerns among U.S. allies.

In response, Zelensky reiterated his commitment to ending the war, but insisted on the need for strong security guarantees before any settlement.

He blamed the lack of such guarantees for Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea and its 2022 full-scale invasion, adding that “real, lasting peace” must be backed by firm international commitments.

The pause in U.S. military aid has triggered fresh diplomatic efforts from Britain and France, with reports suggesting they are exploring a one-month ceasefire covering air, sea, and energy infrastructure.

However, Trump’s decision has rattled European allies, with Germany’s likely next chancellor, Friedrich Merz, accusing the U.S. president of “deliberate escalation”.

Meanwhile, Moscow has welcomed the development, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov accusing Zelensky of lacking diplomatic skills and blocking peace efforts.

Vice President JD Vance, speaking to Fox News, expressed confidence that Zelensky would “eventually” agree to negotiations.

“He’s not there yet, but he’ll get there. He has no choice,” Vance stated.

Amid the diplomatic fallout, reports have emerged of direct U.S.-Russia talks on ending the war—without Ukrainian or European involvement.

The secretive discussions have fueled concerns in Kyiv and among NATO allies that Washington may be seeking a deal that could compromise Ukraine’s sovereignty.

With tensions rising, Ukraine is bracing for the potential consequences of Trump’s foreign policy shift, while European leaders scramble to fill the security vacuum left by Washington’s sudden disengagement.
