Anyanwu VS Ude-Okoye: Security Operatives Take Over PDP National Secretariat

Security operatives have taken control of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretariat in Abuja following a heated altercation between factions loyal to Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye over the party’s National Secretary position.

The confrontation erupted during the Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting when both men arrived to assert their claims to the office.

Tensions escalated after an aide to Anyanwu forcibly removed Ude-Okoye from the meeting, triggering a physical and verbal exchange between their supporters.

The situation prompted the intervention of security personnel, including soldiers, police officers, and operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, who were deployed to restore order and secure the party headquarters.

The National Secretary position has been a source of internal dispute since Anyanwu vacated the role to contest the Imo State governorship election, which he lost.

In his absence, the PDP South East Caucus endorsed Ude-Okoye as his replacement.

However, Anyanwu’s subsequent attempt to reclaim the seat has deepened the crisis within the party.

On December 20, 2024, the Court of Appeal in Enugu upheld an earlier High Court ruling removing Anyanwu as PDP National Secretary and affirming Ude-Okoye’s legitimacy.

Despite the ruling, Anyanwu has filed an appeal and a stay of execution, with Dr. Musa (SAN) appointed as the party’s legal representative by acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, further intensifying the conflict.

JUST IN: FG Suspends Max Air After Kano Incident

The Federal Government has imposed a three-month suspension on Max Air’s domestic operations following a landing incident in Kano on Tuesday night.

The suspension was announced by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) as part of safety measures.

A Max Air Boeing 737-400 aircraft, registered as 5N-MBD, suffered a tyre burst while landing at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport at approximately 10:51 PM on January 28, 2025.

Fortunately, all 53 passengers onboard were safely evacuated, and the runway was reopened by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at 8:00 AM on Wednesday.

This marks the airline’s third incident in three months, raising concerns about its safety standards.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the malfunction, with the NCAA pledging full cooperation.

Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, stated that Max Air’s suspension will take effect from midnight on January 31, 2025.

He explained that the airline’s management will use this period to conduct an internal assessment of its operations.

“In the meantime, the NCAA will carry out a comprehensive safety and economic audit of Max Air. The safety audit will examine the airline’s organization, procedures, personnel, and aircraft, while the economic audit will assess its financial strength to ensure sustainable safe operations,” Achimugu said.

He emphasized that the resumption of Max Air’s domestic flights will depend on the successful completion of the audit.

While acknowledging the inconvenience to passengers, he reassured the public that safety remains the NCAA’s top priority.

Passengers are urged to remain patient as authorities work to ensure that Max Air meets the required aviation safety standards before resuming operations.

NAFDAC Shuts Down 250 Illegal Factories Producing Fake Drinks In Aba

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has once again shut down the Cemetery Market in Aba, Abia State, following a large-scale raid on factories producing counterfeit food and beverages.

In a statement on Tuesday, NAFDAC Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, described the operation dubbed “Operation Clean Up Aba” as the most decisive action ever taken against the infamous market.

During the raid, officials uncovered and confiscated fake and substandard products worth over ₦5 billion.

“This is a major step toward safeguarding public health and eliminating the circulation of fake products in Nigeria,” Adeyeye stated.

According to NAFDAC, more than 240 makeshift factories were discovered producing counterfeit versions of well-known brands such as Hennessy, Seaman Schnapps, Coca-Cola, Sprite, Peak Milk, and Hollandia Yoghurt.

These illegal manufacturers reportedly used contaminated water, harmful chemicals, and recycled bottles in highly unsanitary conditions.

“Criminals in this market use unclean water, saccharin, coloring agents, and unsafe chemicals. In the case of alcoholic beverages, they replace fruits or grapes with cheaper sugars and starches,” Adeyeye explained.

NAFDAC officials destroyed over 1,500 cartons of fake products on-site and uncovered three warehouses stockpiling expired Hollandia Yoghurt, which was allegedly set to be revalidated and resold.

Adeyeye praised the Abia State Government for its cooperation, particularly Governor Alex Otti, the Mayor of Aba South, and the interim market management committee.

She also urged the public to report suspicious products to NAFDAC offices.

“The support of Governor Alex Otti and the local authorities was crucial to the success of this operation. We remain committed to protecting the health of Nigerians and eradicating fake products from the market,” she said.

The Cemetery Market has long been notorious for producing counterfeit alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, and food products, making it a high-priority target for NAFDAC enforcement efforts.

ECOWAS Maintains Visa-Free Travel For Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger Despite Official Exit

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced that citizens of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger will continue to enjoy visa-free travel within the bloc, even though the three countries have formally withdrawn from the regional organization.

This decision comes as ECOWAS seeks to maintain cooperation with the Sahel nations, which officially exited the bloc after a one-year notice period elapsed.

The three countries, currently under military rule, had announced their withdrawal from ECOWAS in 2024, citing disagreements with the organization.

Despite their exit, ECOWAS has assured that their citizens will still be recognized under the bloc’s protocols.

A statement released by the organization directed member states to continue recognizing national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo.

Additionally, goods and services from Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso will still be treated under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policies.

“Member states are to recognize national passports and identity cards from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger until further notice,” the statement read.

“Citizens of these countries will continue to enjoy visa-free movement, residence, and establishment in accordance with ECOWAS protocols.”

The three former ECOWAS members have since formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), a regional confederation aimed at strengthening their political and economic ties.

Court Dismisses Babalola’s Defamation Suit Against Dele Farotimi

The Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti has struck out the defamation charge filed by the police against Lagos-based lawyer and author, Dele Farotimi.

Presiding over the case, Justice Babs Kuewumi dismissed the charge after the police prosecutor, Samson Osobu, informed the court that the prosecution had decided to discontinue the case.

“The matter was scheduled for hearing today, but we have filed a notice of discontinuance dated January 29, 2025,” Osobu told the court.

With no objections from Farotimi’s legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, the judge ruled, “This case is hereby struck out.”

Outside the courtroom, Olumide-Fusika confirmed to journalists that the case had been concluded in this court but declined to comment on other related legal matters pending in different courts.

He also stated that he had advised Farotimi not to speak to the press about the case.

Meanwhile, another defamation charge against Farotimi remains pending before the Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti, presided over by Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun.

That case has been adjourned to February 13, 2025, with expectations that the police may also withdraw the charge.

Additionally, multiple civil cases against Farotimi are ongoing at various courts, including the FCT High Court in Abuja and state high courts in Ogun, Oyo, and Rivers.

These suits, filed by lawyers from Afe Babalola Chambers, have led to interim court orders restricting the further printing, publication, or sale of his book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.

It remains uncertain whether these civil cases will also be discontinued.

Russian-Ukraine War: I’m Open To Peace Talks, But Certainly Not With Zelensky – Putin

Russian President, Vladimir Putin has signaled a willingness to engage in peace talks with Ukraine but ruled out direct negotiations with President Volodymyr Zelensky, whom he described as “illegitimate.”

Zelensky swiftly responded, accusing Putin of avoiding negotiations and using “cynical tricks” to extend the nearly three-year war.

The Ukrainian leader insisted that genuine peace was possible, but he claimed the Kremlin was obstructing efforts to end the conflict.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has been pressuring both sides to halt hostilities since taking office on January 20.

He has threatened tougher sanctions on Russia while asserting that Zelensky is ready to negotiate a settlement.

“If Zelensky wants to participate in negotiations, I will assign representatives to take part,” Putin said.

He argued that the Ukrainian president’s legitimacy had expired due to martial law, suggesting that alternative representatives could engage in talks.

Zelensky, in a post on X, said Putin was “afraid of strong leaders” and was deliberately prolonging the war.

Kyiv has also warned against being sidelined in any direct negotiations between Russia and the U.S., accusing Moscow of trying to manipulate Trump.

Putin also claimed that if Western military and financial support for Ukraine were halted, the war would end within two months.

“They won’t last a month without money and ammunition. Everything would be over in a month and a half or two,” he stated in an interview with Russian state media.

Despite Trump’s pledge to broker a swift ceasefire, the war continues to escalate.

On Wednesday, Russia said it had intercepted over 100 Ukrainian drones overnight, while Kyiv reported a Russian drone strike of its own.

Moscow also announced territorial gains, claiming its forces had captured the village of Dvorichna in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region.

The village, once under Russian control in 2022 before being reclaimed by Ukraine, is seen as a strategic position near the Oskil River.

Additionally, Ukrainian military analysts reported that Russian troops were advancing on the outskirts of Chasiv Yar, a key hilltop town that housed around 12,000 residents before the war.

Ukraine’s army has struggled in recent months, facing ammunition shortages and being outgunned by Russian forces along the 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) frontline.

In response, Kyiv dismissed a deputy defense minister responsible for weapons procurement, after the defense minister accused him of failing to secure the timely supply of ammunition for troops.

Disaster Averted: 53 Escape Death As Max Air Crash-Lands In Kano

A Max Air Boeing 737-4D7 aircraft carrying 53 passengers and crew narrowly avoided disaster on Tuesday night when it crash-landed at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano.

The aircraft, with registration number 5N-MBD, overshot the runway at around 9:15 p.m. before losing its front tire, triggering panic among those on board.

The flight, which had taken off from Lagos with a stop in Abuja, ended in a terrifying emergency landing, prompting an urgent evacuation of passengers.

A senior Max Air official, speaking anonymously, confirmed that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated.

He attributed the incident to a tire burst, citing preliminary findings, but emphasized that regulatory agencies, including the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) and the Aircraft and Equipment Department (AED), had been notified for a full investigation.

The official acknowledged the distress passengers experienced and reassured the public that Max Air remains committed to maintaining high safety standards.

This is not the first safety scare involving the airline.

In December 2024, another Max Air flight (VM1623) made an emergency landing at Muhammadu Buhari International Airport in Maiduguri following an engine fire.

That incident involved 80 passengers, including Borno State’s Deputy Governor, Usman Kadafur.

Naira Appreciates To N1,640 Per Dollar In Parallel Market

The naira has appreciated to N1,640 per dollar in the parallel market, strengthening from N1,655 per dollar recorded on Monday.

Similarly, data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) shows that the official exchange rate in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) improved, with the naira trading at N1,526.3 per dollar, compared to N1,533.5 per dollar on Monday, marking a N7.2 gain.

As a result, the gap between the official and parallel market rates narrowed from N121.5 to N113.7 per dollar.

This appreciation follows months of volatility, with the naira now maintaining a relatively stable range between N1,550 and N1,520 per dollar since December.

Analysts credit this stability to ongoing monetary policy reforms by the CBN, including the Electronic Foreign Exchange Matching System (EFEMS) introduced last December and the upcoming FX code set for launch by the end of January.

Taiwo Oyedele, chairman of Nigeria’s Fiscal Policy and Tax Committee, explained that the new FX code would enhance transparency, helping to remove about $20 million daily from speculative trading in the market.

CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso highlighted that the exchange-rate reforms have positioned the naira more competitively, presenting new opportunities for investors.

Speaking at a virtual briefing hosted by the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG), Cardoso noted that while the naira had experienced sharp depreciation last year, its current levels now offer investors a more competitive entry point.

With continued policy adjustments, there is cautious optimism that the naira’s stability will persist in the months ahead.

Police Withdraw Defamation Charges Against Dele Farotimi

The Nigeria Police Force has officially withdrawn its defamation case against Lagos-based lawyer and author, Dele Farotimi, following the intervention of key stakeholders.

A notice of discontinuance, dated January 29, was filed at the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti under Section 108 (1) (2)(a) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

The notice, signed by police prosecutor Samson Osubu, requests the court to strike out the case after the nominal complainant, Are Afe Babalola, expressed a desire to withdraw the charges.

As at the time of filing this report, legal representatives for both parties have assembled at the Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti, where the prosecution has served the withdrawal notice to Farotimi’s defense team.

However, the presiding judge is yet to sit and formally strike out the charge.

Meanwhile, a separate charge against Farotimi, filed by the police at the Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti, remains pending.

The case is scheduled for hearing on February 13, 2025, though expectations are high that it will also be discontinued before the adjourned date.
