South Africa Introduces 5-Year Visa Policy for Nigerians, Removes Passport Requirement

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced a new visa policy that allows Nigerian tourists to apply for visas without the need to submit their passports.

Additionally, the policy provides eligible Nigerian businessmen and tourists with a five-year multiple-entry visa option.

President Ramaphosa made the announcement on Tuesday during the opening of the 11th session of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC) in Cape Town.

He highlighted that the move is part of South Africa’s efforts to simplify visa processes and foster stronger business and tourism ties between the two nations.

“Our simplified visa process will help Nigerian business people travel to South Africa more easily. Those who qualify will be eligible for a five-year multiple-entry visa,” Ramaphosa said.

He also emphasized South Africa’s commitment to creating a favorable environment for increased investment and improving the business climate for companies operating in both countries.

“South Africa has always been open to Nigerian business, and we need to remove any remaining barriers to further investment,” he added.

Nigeria, South Africa to Finalize Early Warning Mechanism Agreement:

At the same BNC session, the two countries agreed to finalize a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on an Early Warning Mechanism, which has been in development for five years. This system will monitor potential threats of violence, criminal activities, and reprisals involving citizens of both nations.

The decision follows a history of attacks on Nigerian nationals in South Africa, with both leaders agreeing on the need for an effective mechanism to prevent future incidents.

South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, stated that the MoU would be finalized and signed by March 2025 during the South African Minister’s planned visit to Nigeria.

In addition to these discussions, the two countries adopted a joint stance on the escalating conflict in the Middle East, calling for an immediate ceasefire and a return to diplomatic solutions.

They underscored the importance of respecting international humanitarian law and protecting civilians to achieve sustainable peace.

During the session, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu also expressed the need for a strategic partnership between Nigeria and South Africa to promote economic integration and shared prosperity, contributing to the overall growth of Africa.

Pastor Shot Dead By Gunmen On Way To Burial, Three Others Kidnapped

kidnappers have shot and killed Apostle Ranti Ige-Daniel, a clergyman from the Royal Assembly Sanctuary in Lagos, in the Isanlu community of Yagba East Local Government Area, Kogi State.

The incident occurred on Thursday night, just a few kilometers from Isanlu, after the clergyman had attended a revival crusade in the area.

According to reports, Apostle Ige-Daniel, originally from Mopa, was traveling with three others on the Idofin to Makutu road when the gunmen ambushed his vehicle.

The attackers set up a roadblock around 8:30 pm, and when the pastor’s car approached, they opened fire, killing him instantly.

The gunmen then abducted the three passengers in the car, which included a woman believed to be the pastor’s fiancée, and fled into the bush.

A family source claimed that the pastor succumbed to his injuries and bled to death in the hands of the abductors as they took him into the bush along with the other hostages.

Rev. Dr. Francis Iselowo, a family friend, confirmed that Apostle Ige-Daniel and his companions were en route to a burial ceremony in Isanlu when the tragic attack occurred.

He revealed that the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of N10 million per person for the release of the hostages.

As at the time of this report, the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Williams Aya, had not responded to calls or messages seeking comment on the incident.

Group Floods Kano With 2027 Campaign Posters Of Goodluck Jonathan

A group called Team New Nigeria (TNN) has sparked speculation about former President Goodluck Jonathan’s potential return to politics in 2027 by plastering campaign posters featuring his portrait across key locations in Kano State.

The posters, emblazoned with the slogan “Team New Nigeria 2027: The Goodluck Nigeria Needs—Dr. Goodluck Jonathan,” appeared prominently at high-traffic areas such as the Gyadi-Gyadi/Zoo Road flyover, Kofar Nasarawa, and State Road.

Led by Modibbo Yakubu Farakwai, the group has also set up a harmonisation committee in Kano to push its agenda forward.

However, it remains unclear if Jonathan has endorsed the campaign, as his spokesperson, Okechukwu Eze, has not responded to requests for comment.

Farakwai explained that the group’s initiative was driven by widespread public demand for a fresh direction in Nigerian politics.

He emphasized that Nigerians are calling for a transformation in governance, with many desiring a new party and leadership to address the country’s challenges.

With 26,382,000 registered voters across the country, TNN is actively working towards registering as a political party.

Farakwai shared that the group has developed a logo, flag, manifesto, and constitution, and has begun discussions with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to formalize its political registration.

The move mirrors a similar situation in 2022 when supporters of Jonathan, under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), purchased nomination forms for him to run in the 2023 presidential election.

Jonathan, however, distanced himself from the attempt, despite a Federal High Court ruling in Bayelsa State that declared him eligible to run again, stating that no law could prevent him from contesting after serving two terms as president.

Macron Rejects Resignation Calls Ahead of No-Confidence Vote

French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday firmly rejected calls for his resignation, dismissing them as “political fiction” in light of an impending no-confidence vote in parliament.

Speaking to reporters during a visit to Saudi Arabia, Macron stated, “It doesn’t make sense… it’s frankly not up to scratch to say these things.”

Macron, who was elected twice by the French people, emphasized his commitment to serving until the end of his term in 2027.

“I am extremely proud of this and I will honour this trust with all the energy that is mine until the last second to be useful to the country,” he said.

The president’s rejection comes amid mounting pressure from opposition figures, some within his own camp, who have suggested that resignation might be his only option to resolve the political deadlock.

Macron also criticized the far-right National Rally (RN) led by Marine Le Pen for supporting the no-confidence motion, accusing them of “unbearable cynicism” and warned against inciting fear.

“We must not scare people with these things; we have a strong economy,” he said.

While many commentators predict that a coalition between the left and far-right could succeed in toppling Prime Minister Michel Barnier’s government, Macron expressed confidence, saying he did “not believe” the no-confidence motion would pass. “My priority is stability,” he added.

Biden Announces $1 Billion In Aid For Africa During Historic Visit To Angola

President Joe Biden announced over $1 billion in humanitarian assistance for Africa during his first visit to Angola on Tuesday, focusing on addressing the continent’s ongoing humanitarian crises.

Biden, who is also the first sitting U.S. president to visit the former Portuguese colony, met with Angolan President João Lourenço and pledged American support for displaced African communities.

The aid, which will target 31 African nations, will help address food insecurity and urgent needs for refugees and internally displaced persons, particularly in Southern Africa, which is currently enduring its worst recorded drought.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) confirmed that the funds would provide relief for those suffering from the effects of historic droughts across the region.

Speaking at the National Slavery Museum in Luanda, Biden reflected on the U.S.’s historical role in the transatlantic slave trade, highlighting Angola’s significance as a key source of enslaved people in the 19th century.

He acknowledged that “slavery was our nation’s original sin,” a sentiment shared at the museum which displays artifacts from the period.

Biden’s visit, the first to Sub-Saharan Africa since he took office, is seen as a pivotal moment in strengthening U.S.-Angola relations.

The two leaders discussed increasing economic and security cooperation, with a focus on Angola’s strategic role in Africa’s future.

Biden highlighted the ongoing U.S. investment in a major infrastructure project aimed at transporting critical minerals from landlocked countries to Angola’s port of Lobito, part of the larger Lobito Corridor project.

Biden emphasized that “the future runs through Angola, through Africa,” underscoring the importance of the continent in shaping global security and economic stability.

On the geopolitical front, Biden’s visit also comes amid rising concerns over China’s influence in Africa. Angola owes China approximately $17 billion, a significant portion of its national debt.

A senior U.S. official noted that many African governments are seeking alternatives to Chinese investments, which often come with long-term debt obligations.

Biden’s trip also includes a visit to the port of Lobito, where he will attend an infrastructure summit focused on regional investment. The summit, which will include leaders from Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, and Zambia, highlights the ongoing efforts to rehabilitate the Lobito Corridor railway.

This project, backed by the U.S., the European Union, and other international partners, is seen as a major step in increasing economic connectivity and reducing dependency on China.

While Biden’s visit is aimed at fostering economic collaboration, human rights groups have urged him to address Angola’s human rights record, particularly regarding the treatment of protesters and critics of the government.

Biden has yet to respond to calls for him to press the Angolan government on these issues.

Former Edo NLC Chairman Slumps, Dies After Police Encounter

Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin, former Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo State, has tragically passed away following an incident with police officers at a roadblock in Benin City.

Eboigbodin, who was traveling with his wife in the Upper Sokponba area of the city, was stopped by the police on Monday.

Reports indicate that officers questioned the car’s documents, including the vehicle’s glass engraving and plate number.

Despite having valid documents, they reportedly seized his papers and attempted to arrest him, even calling for a tow truck.

Tensions rose during the confrontation, and witnesses say Eboigbodin suddenly collapsed. His wife and bystanders rushed him to the hospital, but he was declared dead upon arrival.

Eyewitnesses allege that the police officers left the scene without offering any help.

In response to the incident, civil society organizations have demanded justice and accountability, giving the police 48 hours to identify those involved.

Rev. David Ugolor of the African Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) described Eboigbodin as a committed activist, emphasizing his contributions to labor and civil society causes.

The Edo State Police Command has denied any wrongdoing, with a spokesperson stating that the account provided by the civil society groups does not align with the version given by Eboigbodin’s wife.

However, this has done little to quell outrage from labor unions and civil society groups calling for a full investigation into the incident.

Obi Condemns Arrest of Dele Farotimi, Demands His Immediate Release

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has condemned the arrest of human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi, who was detained on allegations of defamation.

Obi described the arrest as an abuse of police authority and a direct attack on democratic freedoms in Nigeria.

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi called for Farotimi’s prompt and unconditional release, highlighting that such actions undermine the principles of justice and democracy.

“I have just been informed of the arrest of @DeleFarotimi, a respected human rights lawyer, over defamation allegations. This is a clear misuse of police power and an assault on the core values of justice and democracy in Nigeria,” Obi stated.

Obi pointed out that defamation is a civil issue that should be addressed in court, not through police intervention.

He emphasized that the police should be tasked with protecting citizens’ rights, not silencing them.

“As a former governor and private citizen, I have faced defamation and insults, but I have never resorted to using the police to silence others,” Obi explained.

He urged individuals who feel defamed to seek proper legal redress rather than abuse state power.

Obi also raised concerns about the integrity and independence of the Nigerian police, labeling the arrest as an example of power misuse.

He urged the police to uphold their duty to the Constitution and the Nigerian people, rather than catering to political or partisan interests.

“The use of police in this matter suggests an abuse of power and casts doubt on the professionalism of the police as a public service,” he added.

The Labour Party leader concluded by reiterating his vision of a fairer Nigeria, where freedom of expression is protected, and called for Farotimi’s immediate release.

“Dele Farotimi must be released without delay. A just and free Nigeria is possible,” Obi stated.

Farotimi’s arrest has drawn widespread criticism from activists, legal experts, and members of the public, many of whom have joined Obi in demanding his release.

Enugu Labour Leaders Clarify Payment of N80,000 Minimum Wage, Rule Out Strike

Labour leaders in Enugu State have responded to media reports suggesting that the state had not implemented the new minimum wage, affirming that the N80,000 minimum wage, which exceeds the national N70,000 rate, was paid to workers starting in November 2024.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JNC) clarified that while the N80,000 minimum wage was paid, there were some discrepancies related to the consequential adjustments tied to its implementation.

They assured the public that these concerns had already been communicated to Governor Peter Mbah and expressed confidence that the issues would be addressed.

The statement, signed by Comrade Fabian Nwigbo (NLC), Comrade Ben Asogwa (TUC), and Comrade Ezekiel Omeh (JNC), explained, “The Organized Labour in Enugu State wishes to clarify recent media reports that have wrongly suggested that Enugu is among the states that have not yet paid the national minimum wage. We confirm that the N80,000 minimum wage was paid in the November 2024 salary.”

However, the leaders noted that the payment did not fully reflect the necessary adjustments under the new wage structure.

They emphasized that they had already brought these discrepancies to the governor’s attention and were confident that they would be resolved, given the governor’s past commitment to workers’ welfare.

The statement further praised the governor for his ongoing efforts, including the approval of a N25,000 wage award for workers from December 2023 to October 2024, before the new minimum wage was implemented.

They also acknowledged the governor’s inclusion of local government workers in the N80,000 minimum wage and his approval of outstanding entitlements, including a N1.9 billion leave allowance for public primary school teachers and salary arrears for staff at the Enugu State College of Education Technical.

Despite the issues with the wage implementation, the labour leaders stressed that there were no plans for a strike, noting that they remained confident in the governor’s dedication to resolving the outstanding matters.

“We are not on strike, nor do we foresee any in the near future, as there is no need for such action at this point,” the statement concluded.
