Mexico Prepares Emergency Shelters For Trump’s Deported Migrants

In response to President Donald Trump’s threat of mass deportations, the Mexican military swiftly began setting up emergency shelters near the U.S.-Mexico border on Thursday.

The Mexican government revealed plans to open nine shelters for Mexican citizens and three additional shelters for foreign nationals who are deported.

The initiative, known as “Mexico Embraces You,” aims to provide temporary assistance to those affected by the upcoming deportations.

In Matamoros, a city in Tamaulipas state across from Brownsville, Texas, Navy personnel erected large olive-green tents in a sports field, with one shelter expected to accommodate up to 3,000 people, according to local authorities.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that the country would provide humanitarian aid to deported migrants before arranging for their repatriation.

Trump, who returned to office earlier this week, declared a national emergency at the southern border and promised to deport “millions and millions” of migrants.

His administration has also reinstated the “Remain in Mexico” policy, which forces individuals seeking asylum in the U.S. to wait in Mexico until their claims are processed.

The U.S. government has also suspended an asylum program for those fleeing authoritarian regimes in Latin America, leaving thousands stranded on the Mexican side of the border.

Additionally, the U.S. has increased military presence at the border with Trump’s recent order of 1,500 additional troops.

Mexico is also preparing a new mobile app that will allow migrants to send alerts if they face imminent detention in the U.S, particularly concerning the large number of undocumented Mexican nationals.

African Union Cries Foul Over US Withdrawal From World Health Organization

The African Union expressed strong concern on Wednesday over President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO), urging the U.S. administration to reconsider its stance.

The announcement came just hours after Trump took office on Monday, when he signed an executive order initiating the U.S. withdrawal from the Geneva-based health agency, a move that could significantly impact global health funding.

Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairman of the African Union Commission, voiced his dismay in a statement, emphasizing that the U.S pullout is especially concerning at a time when Africa is grappling with numerous health crises, including recent outbreaks of mpox and Marburg viruses.

Faki underscored the vital role the WHO plays in ensuring global public health security, stating, “Now more than ever, the world depends on WHO to carry out its mandate to ensure global public health security as a shared common good.”

The U.S. is the largest financial contributor to the WHO, and its withdrawal could leave the organization struggling with funding challenges.

Faki also highlighted Washington’s early support for the Africa CDC, a key partner of the WHO in tackling health emergencies across the continent, and expressed hope that the U.S. would reconsider its decision.

Trump has been a vocal critic of the WHO, particularly regarding its response to the Covid-19 pandemic, and had previously announced plans to withdraw during his first term.

However, the decision was reversed by President Joe Biden.

Tom Frieden, former U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director, responded to the move on social media, warning that the U.S withdrawal would weaken America’s influence, heighten the risk of future pandemics, and jeopardize global safety.

The decision comes amid growing concerns about the potential for a bird flu outbreak, which has already infected dozens and caused its first U.S. human fatality earlier this month.

Meanwhile, WHO member states continue negotiations on a global pandemic treaty, a process now set to move forward without the U.S.

Alleged N33.8bn Fraud: Court Adjourns Trial Of Former Power Minister, Mamman

Court Logo,

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the trial of former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, over allegations of a N33.8 billion fraud until February 18, 19, and 20.

Mamman faces a 12-count charge brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), accusing him of conspiring to commit money laundering involving the said amount.

On January 22, the EFCC presented its eighth witness, Abdullahi Suleman, a bureau de change operator, who testified before Justice James Omotosho.

Suleman detailed how over N22 billion was allegedly funneled from the Federal Ministry of Power during Mamman’s tenure, with funds transferred to various business accounts under his control.

These transactions were reportedly used to exchange the money for U.S. dollars, with Suleman admitting that he was instructed to carry out these operations by an individual named Maina Goje, a key figure in the alleged scheme.

Suleman revealed that he had provided multiple business accounts for these transactions, including those belonging to his companies such as Prymint Investment Limited, Strong Field International Projects Limited, and Mintedge Nigeria Limited.

The funds, received in batches, were transferred without any apparent services or contracts tied to the payments.

The witness also identified additional individuals, including Mustapha Muhammed, who worked in the Federal Ministry of Housing, as being involved in the process.

During the hearing, several exhibits containing bank statements detailing large transactions were presented as evidence.

Justice Omotosho adjourned the trial after Suleman’s testimony, setting new dates for the continuation of the proceedings and cross-examination of the witness.

Make Peace Deal With Ukraine Or Face Stricter Sanctions – Trump Warn Putin

Donald Trump has ramped up pressure on Russian President, Vladimir Putin, to reach a peace deal with Ukraine, threatening to impose harsher sanctions on Russia if Moscow does not agree to end the ongoing war.

Trump’s warning came in a post on Truth Social as he seeks a swift resolution to the conflict, which he had pledged to resolve before beginning his second term.

“If we don’t make a ‘deal,’ and soon, I have no other choice but to impose high taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on anything Russia exports to the United States and other countries involved,” Trump stated.

He emphasized that while he was not trying to harm Russia, he urged Putin to settle the war, warning that Russia’s economy, already struggling, would only worsen without a resolution.

Trump further asserted, “Let’s end this war, which would never have started if I were President. We can do it the easy way or the hard way and the easy way is always better. It’s time to make a deal.”

The United States has already imposed severe sanctions on Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, significantly slowing trade between the two nations.

The Biden administration imposed additional sanctions earlier this month targeting Russia’s energy sector.

However, Trump, known for his business acumen and his book The Art of the Deal, indicated that his administration would find ways to tighten the pressure on Russia.

Data from the U.S. Department of Commerce showed that imports from Russia dropped from $4.3 billion in 2023 to $2.9 billion between January and November 2024.

Trump’s comments mark his strongest stance against Putin since returning to office this week.

In contrast to previous remarks where he hinted at potentially pressuring Ukraine into negotiations, this time he directly called for Putin to act.

On Tuesday, Trump mentioned that additional sanctions were “likely” if Russia did not engage in peace talks.

Despite his tough words on sanctions, Trump did not clarify whether he would continue sending military aid to Ukraine, which has been a major policy of the Biden administration.

He also expressed plans to meet with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Putin soon to discuss the war.

Trump had previously promised during his inauguration to end the war within 24 hours of taking office.

His administration had hoped to leverage sanctions or other measures to push Ukraine into making territorial concessions to Russia, but such a breakthrough has yet to materialize.

In a rare critical statement about Putin on Monday, Trump said the Russian president was “destroying Russia by not making a deal,” adding that Zelensky had told him he wanted peace.

Putin, meanwhile, congratulated Trump on his second-term inauguration and expressed openness to dialogue with the new administration, hoping for a lasting peace agreement.

Trump has long been a supporter of Putin, admiring his leadership style, which has found resonance among some American conservatives.

Despite investigations into possible collusion between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia, which resulted in convictions of six campaign associates, Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing, labeling the investigation as the “Russia hoax.”

Soludo’s Wife Vows Justice For Woman Killed By Husband In Abagana

Dr. Nonye Soludo, wife of Anambra State Governor, has pledged to ensure the prosecution of the man responsible for setting his wife on fire in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area.

The tragic incident, which gained widespread attention after a video went viral, has sparked outrage across the state.

Speaking to journalists in Awka on Thursday, Dr. Soludo, who is also the founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, expressed her determination to follow the case closely and ensure justice for the victim.

She revealed that she had directed an immediate visit to the scene after learning about the incident and had received reports from the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, and the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, who had both visited the location.

“I have seen the disturbing video, and I made sure to visit the site immediately. I will make sure the case is pursued until justice is served,” Dr. Soludo stated.

The victim, Mrs. Chioma Nwaka, a mother of five boys, was severely burned after her husband, Mr. Sunday Nwaka, allegedly doused her in fuel and set her on fire following a domestic dispute.

Eyewitnesses recounted how neighbors and passersby rushed to put out the fire, but the damage was already done.

The victim was later rushed to a hospital in Enugwu-Ukwu, where she succumbed to her injuries and was declared dead around 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

The suspect, Mr. Nwaka, has been apprehended and is expected to face charges for his actions.

Describing the incident as both horrific and cruel, Dr. Soludo condemned the increasing prevalence of domestic violence and abuse, calling for societal reform.

She emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to combat drug abuse and related issues, which she identified as contributors to the problem.

“The Anambra State government takes domestic violence seriously, and we will ensure that those responsible for such heinous acts are held accountable,” Dr. Soludo said.

“The government will also provide support for the five children left behind by the victim.”

She reiterated the government’s commitment to tackling domestic violence, ensuring justice for victims, and supporting families affected by such tragedies.

Striking Doctors Challenge Wike, Akpabio To Use FCT Hospitals

Resident doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have challenged the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to experience the conditions of public health facilities by using government hospitals in Abuja.

The doctors, currently on a three-day warning strike over unpaid salaries and allowances, argue that government officials should personally witness the challenges faced by health workers and patients in the capital’s hospitals.

“If we are serious about improving the healthcare system, every government official must use the government hospitals,” said George Ebong, President of the FCT Resident Doctors Association, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday.

Ebong called for action, stating, “I want to see the minister use Wuse General Hospital, the Senate President use Maitama General Hospital, and the Speaker use Iyanya General Hospital. Only then can we begin to address the system’s issues.”

The doctors’ strike, which began Wednesday, has halted activities in several government hospitals across Abuja, including Wuse, Asokoro, Maitama, Kubwa, Zuba, Kwali, Abaji, Nyanya, and others.

The strike follows the expiration of a three-week ultimatum given to the government, citing grievances over unpaid wages and poor working conditions.

Ebong accused Wike and other government officials of neglecting healthcare in the FCT.

He acknowledged the minister’s focus on infrastructural projects like road repairs but stressed that the nation’s hospitals are in dire need of attention.

“The minister has been busy fixing roads and bridges, but our hospitals are in a deplorable state,” Ebong stated.

“We feel like the human abandoned project. No matter what infrastructure projects are undertaken, hospitals must be the first priority for improvement.”

The doctor further explained that FCT hospitals suffer from chronic issues such as inadequate electricity, a lack of medical supplies, malfunctioning diagnostic machines, and a shortage of staff.

He pointed out that some hospitals in the capital are staffed with only one doctor.

Ebong also revealed that many doctors have not been paid their salaries for up to six months despite their hard work and increased responsibilities.

He mentioned that while the minister had only met with them once, they had sent multiple letters outlining their concerns.

He criticized the bureaucratic delays preventing proper action from being taken and urged Wike to visit the hospitals and assess the current situation himself.

“We urge the minister to ensure all unpaid wages are settled and to visit the hospitals to see their condition firsthand,” Ebong said.

If no significant progress is made after the warning strike, Ebong warned that the association may resort to an indefinite shutdown, as the congress would have no choice but to escalate the protest.

Resolve LP Crisis Now Or Become Irrelevant In 2027 – Stakeholders Warn Obi

The Alliance for All Labour Party Professionals and Stakeholders (AALPS) has expressed grave concerns over the alleged destabilisation of the Labour Party by Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate.

In a statement issued by the group’s National Convener, Dr. Blessing Elaigwu, AALPS warned that Obi’s actions were putting the party’s future at risk and could have disastrous consequences in the 2027 general elections.

The group accused Obi of fostering division and litigation within the party, which it believes is undermining its unity and growth.

AALPS specifically pointed to Obi’s alleged role in supporting an attempt to replace the Labour Party’s legitimate leadership, headed by Julius Abure, with his supporters during a contentious stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia last year.

Elaigwu emphasised that the ongoing infighting within the party was hindering its progress, especially as other political parties are already planning for 2027.

He added that Obi’s actions were weakening the party’s foundation and betraying the trust placed in him by millions of Nigerians.

The news of Beatrice Ekweremadu’s release and return to Nigeria sparked wild celebrations in Mpu, Aninri LGA, Enugu State, on Wednesday.

Traders at the Orie Mpu market, especially women, joyfully abandoned their stalls to celebrate the return of the wife of Nigeria’s former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, after she served a prison sentence in the United Kingdom.

Beatrice Ekweremadu and her husband, Ike, had both been sentenced for organ trafficking offenses by the Central Criminal Court in London.

While Beatrice was sentenced to four and a half years in March 2023, Ike was sentenced to nine years and eight months for the same crime.

Despite their convictions, news that Beatrice had completed her jail term and returned to Nigeria brought great relief and excitement to her hometown, as she was reunited with her family in Abuja.

In Mpu, her community, the announcement of her return sparked a frenzy of celebration.

Women at the market broke into song and dance, leaving their businesses behind to take part in the joyous occasion.

Many expressed hope that Ike would also soon return.

Benjamin Chijioke, President General of Mpu Town Union Federated, confirmed the news and said that the entire community was overwhelmed with happiness.

“It’s a great day for us. The whole village has been in celebration since morning. People are shedding tears of joy, especially those who depended on the Ekweremadu family’s philanthropy,” Chijioke said.

“We’ve missed them greatly, but we thank God for everything,” he added.

Other community members, like Emejonwu Abajonu, echoed these sentiments, expressing gratitude and optimism that Ike would return soon.

“To God alone be the glory. Ike will soon be back,” Abajonu said.

Kingsley Chioke also celebrated the moment, saying, “Waoooh! One down, one to go. Congratulations to us. We give all the glory to God.”

Wife Dies After Husband Sets Her Ablaze Over Alleged Infidelity

A tragic incident occurred in Abagana community, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, when a middle-aged woman, Mrs. Chioma Nwana, was set ablaze by her husband over accusations of infidelity.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening at Eziezekwe village in Abagana.

Mrs. Nwana, who sustained severe burns, was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment but tragically passed away the following morning.

Investigations revealed that the couple had been experiencing frequent arguments due to the husband’s allegations that his wife had been unfaithful.

On the night of the incident, it is reported that Mrs. Nwana returned home, and her husband confronted her, accusing her of being involved with another man.

In a fit of rage, he allegedly poured petrol on her and set her on fire.

A source close to the family stated, “Mrs. Chioma Nwana, who lived with her husband and their six children, was burned by her husband on Tuesday evening. She was rushed to the hospital but sadly died from her injuries on Wednesday morning.”

Tribunal Admits Evidence Of Over-Voting In Edo Deputy Governor’s LGA

The Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, resumed its proceedings on January 22, 2025, with a witness from the Ovia South West Local Government Area (LGA) providing testimony regarding over-voting that allegedly benefited the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the September 21, 2024, Edo State Governorship Election.

The witness, a Collation Agent for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ovia South West, presented evidence that in seven polling units in the LGA, the number of votes cast surpassed the number of accredited voters.

The affected polling units were PUs 014, 007, 004, 006, 016, 028, and 034. Notably, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, the APC candidate’s running mate and now Deputy Governor, is from Ovia South West.

In his testimony at the hearing of petition EPT/ED/GOV/02/2024, the PDP Collation Agent stated that despite clear evidence of over-voting in these polling units, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to annul the results.

The witness also confirmed that PDP agents had raised objections to the over-voting, but their protests were disregarded by INEC’s presiding officers.

The witness supported his claims with various documents, including the BVAS accreditation report, certified true copies (CTC) of Result Sheets Form EC8A-C, CTCs from the IREV, and BVAS extracts from INEC.

Counsels for the first respondent, INEC (Kanu Agabi, SAN), and the second respondent (Okpebholo, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN), had raised objections to the admission of the witness’s statement on oath, but the tribunal overruled the objections and accepted the evidence.

The hearing continues as the PDP presents more witnesses.
