Nnewi Catholic Diocese: Man Renounces Christianity Over Church’s Failure To Recognize Late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah

A man identified as James Louise Okoye has been captured in a viral video publicly renouncing his Christian faith during the dedication ceremony of the Nnewi Catholic Diocese Cathedral.

The video, which surfaced on social media on Wednesday, shows Okoye shouting within the church premises while accusing the church of failing to acknowledge the late former Senator representing Anambra South, Ifeanyi Ubah, who died in July 2024.

In the footage obtained by DAILY GAZETTE, Okoye repeatedly shouted the name of Ifeanyi Ubah and declared that the day marked the end of his Christian faith, insisting that it was his “last day as a Christian.”

He expressed anger over what he described as the church’s refusal to recognise the late politician during prayers at the Mass, particularly when prayers were offered for the souls of the faithful departed.

Okoye argued that Ifeanyi Ubah played a significant role in supporting the construction of the cathedral before his death and questioned why his name was not mentioned during the service.

Addressing those present, he asked whether anyone heard the priest pray for the repose of Ifeanyi Ubah’s soul, a moment that further heightened tension during the ceremony.

The incident has since sparked widespread reactions online, with social media users expressing differing views on both the man’s conduct and the church’s handling of the situation.

PDP Crisis: Court Fixes January 23 To Hear Turaki-Led Stay Application

The Federal High Court in Abuja has set January 23, 2026, for the hearing of an application seeking a stay of further proceedings filed by the Kabiru Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The motion arises from a suit instituted by the faction aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik adjourned the matter on Wednesday to allow the plaintiffs’ counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu, to formally respond to the stay application.

The Wike-aligned PDP, represented by acting National Chairman Mohammed Abdulrahman and factional National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, filed the suit (FHC/ABJ/CS/2501/2025) seeking to restrain the Turaki-led leadership from parading themselves as party representatives.

The plaintiffs also asked the court to direct the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to bar the Turaki faction from accessing the PDP national secretariat at Wadata Plaza, Abuja, and to ensure that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognizes only the official party address.

Justice Abdulmalik had earlier issued an ex-parte order restraining parties from taking any further steps pending the determination of the suit.

The Turaki faction subsequently appealed this decision and filed motions for a stay of proceedings and for the judge’s recusal, citing alleged bias.

During Wednesday’s hearing, Ikpeazu argued that an appeal does not automatically halt court proceedings, noting that the appeal in question was against an interlocutory decision.

In response, Chief Chris Uche, counsel for the Turaki faction, insisted that the trial court should pause proceedings until the appeal is resolved, citing legal precedent.

Justice Abdulmalik adjourned the case to January 23, 2026, for the hearing of the stay application.

On the recusal request, Uche asked the judge to step down and referred the matter to the Chief Judge for reassignment, arguing that the defendants had petitioned against certain judges handling PDP internal dispute cases due to perceived partisanship.

He also criticized the timing and format of a prior ex-parte order issued on November 25, 2025, shortly after the suit was filed.

Speaking to journalists after the hearing, PDP National Working Caretaker Committee Publicity Secretary Jungudo Mohammed expressed hope that the court would grant the plaintiffs’ request.

He cited two previous Federal High Court judgments that had restrained any planned party convention, warning against members who continued to act in defiance of court orders.

Two More Rivers Lawmakers Pull Out Of Impeachment Plot Against Fubara

The impeachment effort against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, has faced another setback as two additional members of the State House of Assembly withdrew their backing for the process.

Barile Nwakoh of Khana Constituency I and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II announced their decision barely 48 hours after Minority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo (Omuma Constituency) and Peter Abbey (Degema Constituency) had taken a similar stance, urging colleagues to “sheathe their swords” and seek dialogue.

While the lawmakers acknowledged that the Governor and his deputy may have breached constitutional provisions, they said their reversal came following appeals from respected leaders and stakeholders calling for restraint in the interest of peace and stability.

With this development, four of the 26 legislators who initially supported the impeachment notice have now distanced themselves from the process, highlighting growing calls within the Assembly for negotiation over confrontation.

The Rivers State House of Assembly is scheduled to reconvene on January 15, 2026, as attention turns to how House leadership will manage the widening divisions.

The lawmakers also warned that prolonged tension could further destabilize governance and urged their colleagues to explore alternative mechanisms to resolve the political impasse.

Viral Video: Anambra Police Take Suspect Into Custody After Masquerade Wreaks Havoc On Residents

Police in Anambra State have arrested a masquerade captured in a viral video assaulting residents of Awgbu community in Orumba North Local Government Area.

The incident, which reportedly occurred during the festive period, showed the masquerade attacking unsuspecting villagers without provocation, sparking outrage on social media.

Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the actions of the masquerade were unlawful, unacceptable, and contrary to Igbo cultural values.

Ikenga stated that the Anambra State Police Command had taken the suspect into custody following the breach of public peace caused by the violent conduct.

According to him, the behaviour displayed in the widely circulated video does not represent Igbo tradition and will not be tolerated under any circumstance.

“The Command wishes to inform the public that the masquerade involved in the unprovoked and violent attacks on innocent citizens in Awgbu has been arrested. Such conduct is totally unacceptable and unlawful,” the statement said.

He added that investigations are ongoing and assured that all individuals connected to the incident would be identified and prosecuted.

“The suspect remains in police custody, and we are committed to ensuring that everyone involved faces the full weight of the law,” Ikenga said.

Prosecutors Ask Court To Sentence Former South Korean President Yoon To Death

South Korean prosecutors have asked a court to sentence former president Yoon Suk Yeol to death if he is convicted over his failed attempt to impose martial law in December 2024.

The request was made during closing arguments at the Seoul Central District Court, where Yoon is standing trial on charges of leading an insurrection.

Prosecutors described him as the “ringleader” of an unconstitutional move that briefly plunged the country into political turmoil.

Yoon’s declaration of martial law lasted only a few hours but led to his impeachment by parliament and subsequent arrest.

He has denied all charges, insisting the move was symbolic and intended to draw attention to alleged wrongdoing by the opposition.

Under South Korean law, the crime of leading an insurrection carries either the death penalty or life imprisonment, requiring prosecutors to seek one of the two sentences.

Although South Korea has not carried out executions in nearly three decades, the law remains in force.

In court, prosecutors argued that Yoon’s actions were driven by a desire for unchecked power and long-term rule.

They said the absence of fatalities did not lessen the gravity of his intent, describing the attempt as a direct assault on democracy and constitutional order.

They presented testimony from a senior military commander who claimed Yoon ordered the arrest of lawmakers during the episode, as well as a memo from a former military officer involved in planning the martial law.

The document allegedly suggested the “disposal” of hundreds of people, including journalists, labour activists and politicians.

Yoon’s trial has been consolidated with those of other senior officials from his administration, including former defence minister Kim Yong-hyun and former police chief Cho Ji-ho.

Prosecutors are seeking life imprisonment for Kim and a 20-year jail term for Cho, alongside charges against five other defendants.

Addressing the court, Yoon maintained that he acted within his constitutional powers as president and said the declaration was meant to protect the nation from what he described as forces seeking to undermine it.

The court is expected to deliver its verdict in February. Legal observers note that sentences requested by prosecutors are not always upheld.

Yoon, 65, was removed from office in April and became the first sitting South Korean president to be arrested and charged.

His brief martial law declaration shocked the nation and triggered months of political instability, culminating in a snap election that brought current president Lee Jae Myung to power.

Despite his removal, Yoon continues to enjoy support among some right-wing groups who view him as a victim of political persecution.

Gov Mbah And The Politics Of Performance: Why Streets Of Enugu Tell A Worthy Story

By Wordshot Ugwuele,

The way some opposition elements in Enugu are near suicide because of Mbah’s performance, is the greatest testament of his success. They are sweating daily in futility to nail him by all means, including repeatedly saying the same lies over and over again.

They were thinking his government was going to be a failure; so unimpressive that everyone would be in that agreement. But, my dear brother, let me tell you something, Mbah is very brilliant, and I think he owes his success to this.

He perfectly understood who is the most important constituency. He recognized early this is the people, the masses, and has been working for them ever since.

That was why the elite came with the zoom story, because he just needed to focus on work and not the usual self-aggrandizing political meetings.

During the last election, I was in Abakpa one day the PDP came for the campaign there. I was so angry that I almost carried out a one man demonstration against them.

Why? The state of the roads in that community they rode through to the venue. There was no single motorable road in Abakpa.

It was so openly too insulting that the only time they realized Abakpa existed was during the campaigns.

When I went on air on the radio, I blasted the local government; the council chairmen of the urban areas of Enugu, for not doing anything. At least they could have patched these roads, fixed culverts and gutters. They were just there.

Now, go there today. Go to the same Abakpa and see for yourself. I visit Abakpa almost on a daily basis for business.

I can tell you there is a profound ignition of citizenship pride and a pronounced sense of belonging evident all around, as they go about their daily business on these well rehabilitated roads.

In fact, I can’t even imagine what would happen when the dualization of the Nike Road is completed. Honestly, I am still wondering what Mbah’s opponents would tell residents of Abakpa as the reason not to vote for him.

People often say Mbah demolished markets and all that. They never understood that some of these spaces were actually recovered from those who stole them, in brazen cases of mindless trespassing, with official impunity by former public office holders and their agents.

These people are largely responsible for the pain of those who lost their daily livelihoods when the structures built on them were demolished.

For instance, do you know that this Abakpa which is impassable most times of the day, because the only place the vehicles load and discharge passengers is along the road, once had a large motor park?

Do you also know that the old Ogige park used to be five times bigger than what it was before it was demolished? The story is no different in Holly Ghost and Garki.

Where did they all go? Private citizens illegally acquired and turned these public spaces into private properties and estates, which they redeveloped and started collecting rents from the occupants.

Mbah is not just brilliant. He is bold. He reached out and boldly recovered all of these.

Even the roads that are being finalized, from Abakpa Junction to T – Junction, see what he did in recovering all the road shoulders people stole, to extend their buildings into.

The T – Junction flyover underpass is now being remodeled, where the road didn’t pass before because of private property, to serve better public interest.

Those whose properties were untouchable before, like Senator Gill Nnaji, had to bow and give way to superior and overriding public interests. That is how it should be.

As a journalist, I have the professional tools to feel the public perception of the Peter Mbah administration, and I can tell you his ratings are quite high among the real people. Forgot politics.

It is the truth. Reach out to the people in the streets and hear their honest assessments; where he is getting it and where they think he is not. Forgot the social media noise by political opponents and the opposition.

In line with my job, I regularly carry out vox pop on random issues in such public spaces like the streets, markets, motor parks, filling stations, public buses, etc.

The people’s verdicts here are usually reliable. Go there and feel the real pulse of the people. You will hear the truth. You will hear less propaganda.

And to be sincere, the only area the people, as per my interactions in the streets, have issues is with regards to taxation.

And this is because they do not fully understand the operable dynamics of the tax assessment, netting and payment the government is implementing, given that there was enforcement laxity before now.

Once explained and they understand that no one who shouldn’t be paying is paying, and no one is paying more than he should be paying, they understand.

My wife runs a business in the city. So, I know from her assessment that she wasn’t being cheated. But, of course, left for her as of most people, she shouldn’t be paying anything at all.

The same applies to the issue of water. To deny that is not a challenge is to be insincere. But to also say the Mbah administration has not been working hard for solutions, is equally unfair.

I can tell you for a fact that it is true when the government says what it is pumping has doubled. It is also true that dilapidated supply lines waste a larger percentage of these, making it impossible for effective and wider distribution.

For example, right now there are two places near my office that were recently repaired. One was directly under a building and the other at the center of the road. If you are around the Parklane roundabout, going to Trans Ekulu, the patch where the road was dug up, is it.

Their locations delayed the work for such a long time. Then in a street in Thinkers Corner, there is another hole, dug, for an old broken asbestos pipe to be replaced.

They have replaced it but the hole has not been closed yet. It’s like they are still observing it. In fact, in many neighborhoods, water is being lost that way.

Finally, when next you come to Enugu, I undertake to take you round, to see for yourself. I swear, you will be proud of what you would see.

32 Killed As Construction Crane Collapses Onto Moving Train In Thailand

At least 32 people have been killed after a construction crane collapsed onto a moving passenger train in northeastern Thailand, causing the train to derail, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in Nakhon Ratchasima province at a construction site linked to a China-backed high-speed rail project.

Footage verified by AFP showed the massive crane’s shattered structure resting on concrete pillars above the wreckage, with smoke billowing from the derailed train below.

Rescue teams were deployed to extract passengers trapped inside the tilted carriages as emergency responders worked through the debris.

A witness, Mitr Intrpanya, said he heard a loud crashing sound followed by two explosions before rushing to the scene.

According to him, the crane struck the middle of the train’s second carriage, slicing it in half as it collapsed onto three passenger coaches.

Thailand’s health ministry reported that 32 people died in the crash, three others were missing, while 64 passengers were hospitalised, including seven in critical condition.

The train was travelling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province and had 195 passengers on board at the time of the accident, Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said. Authorities are still working to identify the victims.

The crane collapse occurred at a construction site forming part of a more than five-billion-dollar high-speed rail project designed to link Bangkok with Kunming in China via Laos by 2028, under Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative.

An engineering consultant on the project, Theerachote Rujiviphat, told AFP that Italian-Thai Development, the Thai construction firm contracted to build the affected section, was solely responsible for the crane involved in the accident.

He added that the launching crane belonged to the same company and noted that a similar incident had previously occurred under its supervision.

A spokesperson for Italian-Thai Development said the company could not immediately respond to questions regarding the collapse.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul called for a full investigation into the incident, stressing that those responsible must be held accountable.

He noted that construction-related accidents were recurring and suggested tougher laws, including blacklisting firms repeatedly linked to fatal incidents.

Italian-Thai Development and its director were among those indicted in August over a separate case involving the collapse of a Bangkok high-rise during an earthquake, which killed about 90 people, most of them construction workers.

China’s foreign ministry said it was reviewing the incident and expressed condolences to the victims’ families, adding that the section under construction appeared to be handled by a Thai company.

Rescue efforts were briefly suspended due to reports of chemical leakage at the site before operations resumed, according to local police.

Thailand’s rail network spans about 5,000 kilometres, though decades of underinvestment have made rail travel less popular than road transport.

When completed, the 600-kilometre high-speed rail line will allow Chinese-built trains to travel from Bangkok to Nong Khai at speeds of up to 250 kilometres per hour.

Industrial and construction accidents remain common in Thailand, where weak enforcement of safety regulations has often resulted in deadly incidents.

Ekpoma Protests: Seven Released As Gov. Okpebholo Orders Freedom For Arrested Students

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has approved the release of seven persons arrested in connection with the recent protests in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state.

The release followed the governor’s directive that only verified students arrested during the unrest should be freed.

The Edo State Commissioner for Education, Paddy Iyamu, who was present to oversee the process, confirmed that the order was strictly limited to genuine students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.

Governor Okpebholo, during a meeting with the President of the Students’ Union Government of the institution on Tuesday, maintained that the disturbance was not organised by students of the university.

According to him, the violence was carried out by non-students who loiter around the campus to foment trouble and extort law-abiding students.

He described the incident as a criminal operation rather than a legitimate protest, insisting that the state government would not tolerate such activities.

The governor assured the SUG leadership that any student mistakenly arrested while security agencies were restoring order would be promptly identified and released.

He said that the violence, which led to the burning of markets and destruction of property, was a deliberate attempt to loot and destabilise the community, adding that such actions would no longer be tolerated.

Governor Okpebholo also dismissed claims that kidnappings occurred during the incident, describing the reports as false and deliberately staged to mislead the public and fuel ethnic tension.

According to him, the alleged kidnappings were orchestrated by the perpetrators themselves, describing the situation as deeply troubling, especially with reports that a life was lost during the violence.

The governor further warned that anyone found sponsoring or using hoodlums to destabilise communities in Edo State would be prosecuted, regardless of political affiliation.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property, stressing that all those responsible for the unrest would be brought to justice.

Defence Minister Cautions Controversial Islamic Cleric Gumi, Others Against Sympathising With Bandits

Controversial Islamic Cleric, Gumi

The Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), has issued a strong warning to Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmed Gumi and other Nigerians against portraying bandits and terrorists as part of any form of northern brotherhood.

In a statement released on Wednesday in Maiduguri, the defence minister stressed that any form of sympathy, justification or moral defence of criminal groups amounts to complicity.

“A friend of a thief is a thief,” Musa declared, warning that Nigerians who lend support, directly or indirectly, to terrorists and bandits would be treated accordingly.

He explained that the statement was deliberate and pointed, describing it as a direct response to narratives previously advanced by Sheikh Gumi, who had referred to bandits hiding in the forests as “our brothers” and suggested that society could not exist without them.

According to the minister, such rhetoric dangerously blurs the line between compassion and collaboration, noting that while empathy may be a human virtue, legitimising or normalising criminal violence only emboldens armed groups responsible for widespread killings, displacement and destruction across the country.

Musa said banditry and terrorism have devastated communities, uprooted families and claimed countless innocent lives, adding that attempts to rationalise the actions of such groups weaken national security efforts and undermine the sacrifices of security personnel.

He warned that terrorism does not survive on weapons alone but also on the moral cover provided by influential voices who excuse or defend criminality.

“Anyone who shields criminals through words, influence or silence shares responsibility for the consequences,” he said, stressing that neutrality in matters of national security is no longer an option.

The defence minister concluded that Nigeria cannot defeat banditry and terrorism if dangerous narratives continue to obscure the distinction between victims and perpetrators.

“The choice is clear: stand with the law and the nation, or be counted among those enabling crime,” he said.
