Avoid Nocturnal Meetings, Prioritize Public Interest – Gov Fubara To New Rivers CP

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has advised the newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, to focus on maintaining public peace and security while avoiding politically motivated activities.

During a courtesy visit by Adepoju at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara emphasized the importance of putting the interests of Rivers State residents above all else.

He specifically cautioned the new CP against attending clandestine meetings, which could undermine the neutrality of his office.

Fubara said, “Your duty is to work closely with the government and other security agencies to ensure law and order, and to protect the lives and properties of Rivers people. You must remain apolitical and avoid nocturnal meetings that may compromise your position as a neutral force.”

The governor also charged Adepoju with tackling two critical security challenges in the state: cultism and kidnapping, especially in boundary communities.

He highlighted that these issues are negatively affecting schools and the broader community. Fubara called for a strategic approach to combat these threats and reduce their impact on the state’s youth.

Acknowledging the importance of collaboration, Governor Fubara reassured the new CP of his administration’s full support.

He stressed that the success of the police in maintaining peace and security would be a reflection of both the government’s support and the CP’s professionalism.

Adepoju, for his part, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Rivers State. He assured the governor that his team would work innovatively to tackle the state’s security issues.

He emphasized the importance of strengthening intelligence gathering and enhancing response mechanisms, while maintaining an apolitical stance and fostering trust with the community.

In a related development, Governor Fubara and CP Adepoju decorated two officers with their new ranks of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).

The officers, Anthony Peter, the Governor’s Personal Security Officer, and John Wakama, Provost Marshal of Government House, were both promoted from Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP 1) to DSP.

The short ceremony, attended by the officers’ wives, took place after the courtesy visit at the Government House.

Enugu Labour Party Hails Appeal Court Judgment Upholding Abure As National Chairman

The Enugu State chapter of the Labour Party has expressed its approval of the Court of Appeal’s judgment affirming Barrister Julius Abure as the legitimate national chairman of the party.

In a statement made available to DAILY GAZETTE by Dr. Barr. Casmir Agbo, the party’s state chairman, the Labour Party commended the Court of Appeal for its decision in two separate appeals—Senator Esther Nenadi Usman & others vs Labour Party (CA/Abj/CV/1232/2024) and INEC Vs Labour Party & others (CA/Abj/CV/2024).

The Appeal court ruled that the trial court lacked jurisdiction to determine the leadership of the party, as the suit in question was incompetent.

It declared the matter a mere academic exercise, upholding the High Court’s November 2024 judgment as legally sound and well-reasoned.

Dr. Agbo described the ruling as a vindication of the rule of law and praised the integrity of the judicial process.

He further emphasized that the decision marked an important step in the pursuit of justice for the party.

Nnamdi Kanu Petitions NJC, Accuses Justice Nyako Of Judicial Misconduct

Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has formally petitioned the National Judicial Council (NJC) against Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja, accusing her of judicial bias and misconduct in his ongoing trial.

The petition, dated January 13, 2024, was submitted to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, who also chairs the NJC.

Kanu’s legal team claims that Justice Nyako’s handling of his case has caused him significant and continuing harm, including the unlawful deprivation of his liberty.

Justice Nyako is overseeing the terrorism charges filed against Kanu by the Federal Government.

In the petition, Kanu, through an affidavit sworn by his brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, alleges that the judge’s refusal to reinstate his bail, despite a Supreme Court ruling, represents a violation of constitutional rights and judicial misconduct.

He accused Justice Nyako of disregarding legal principles and acting in defiance of the Constitution.

Kanu argues that the judge’s actions violate Section 287(1) of the Constitution, which mandates all authorities and courts to obey Supreme Court rulings.

He has called on the NJC to discipline Justice Nyako for her actions, which he describes as a breach of his fundamental rights and a failure to uphold the rule of law.

I Turned Down Rituals In My Governorship Bid – Douye Diri

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has shared the story behind his rise to office, crediting his unwavering faith in God for his success and earning him the title of ‘miracle governor’.

Speaking at the Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area Annual Day of Thanksgiving in Sampou, Diri recalled how he turned down an offer to perform rituals in 2020 as part of his bid for the governorship.

According to the governor, a senior citizen had invited him to Abuja and suggested that he carry out certain rituals to secure the position, but Diri refused, relying solely on his faith in God.

At the time, he was challenging the results of the November 2019 governorship election in the Supreme Court.

The senior citizen, who had brought marabouts from Senegal for the rituals, demanded a refund of the $10,000 spent on their travel after Diri rejected the proposal.

Diri emphasized that his belief in God’s guidance led him to turn down worldly offers and trust in divine intervention.

He encouraged politicians to learn from his experience and place their trust in God rather than human assistance.

The governor also praised the people of Kolokuma/Opokuma for their continued support, highlighting the significant development in the area under his leadership.

He expressed gratitude to Apostle David Aggrey, the head of the Royal House of Grace Church, for initiating the Thanksgiving Day, which is now legally recognized in the local government.

In his sermon, Apostle Aggrey stressed the importance of recognizing God’s role in their lives, especially as the younger generation may not fully understand the hardships their elders endured.

He also commended Governor Diri for the ongoing development in Bayelsa and thanked the people for re-electing him for a second term.

Obi, Otti’s Caretaker Committee Rejects Abure’s Appeal Court Victory, Insists On Leadership Mandate

The leadership crisis within the Labour Party deepened on Saturday as the 29-member caretaker committee, led by Abia State Governor Alex Otti and the party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, rejected the recent Court of Appeal ruling that validated Julius Abure’s position as the party’s national chairman.

In a statement released in Abuja, the committee, headed by Senator Nenadi Usman, reaffirmed their authority to manage the party’s affairs, citing the mandate given to them by stakeholders at an emergency convention.

They urged Abure to stop presenting himself as the national chairman.

This comes just a day after the Court of Appeal in Abuja upheld Abure’s position, ruling that the Labour Party’s March 2024 national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, was valid.

The court also dismissed the previous judgment of the Federal High Court, which had invalidated Abure’s leadership.

The appellate court, led by Justice Hamma Barka, declared that the leadership dispute was not justiciable and therefore outside the court’s jurisdiction, rendering the Federal High Court’s ruling null and void.

However, the caretaker committee expressed dissatisfaction with the judgment, claiming the Federal High Court lacked jurisdiction and violated their right to a fair hearing.

The committee further insisted that their mandate remains legitimate, as confirmed by the September 2024 constitution of the National Caretaker Committee.

The statement, signed by Senator Usman and National Secretary Darlington Nwokocha, emphasized their ongoing leadership role and commitment to serving the party and its members.
