Instagram Introduces New Feature To Share Reels Liked By Friends

Instagram has introduced a new feature on its Reels platform, allowing users to see which videos their friends have liked or commented on.

The feature, which has been gradually rolled out to users worldwide in recent weeks, displays small profile bubbles in the top-right corner of the Reels playback screen, showing interactions from friends.

By tapping on these bubbles, users can view a list of posts their friends have engaged with, along with a reply bar for easier responses and participation in ongoing conversations.

Instagram states that the goal of the update is to foster greater social interaction and engagement among users on the platform.

The company highlighted the feature as part of its broader effort to promote creativity and connection by encouraging users to interact more within the app.

However, the update has sparked mixed reactions.

Some critics have voiced concerns that it could lead to uncomfortable situations if friends engage with sensitive or controversial content, potentially raising privacy issues.

There are also fears that in some relationships, a “like” could be misinterpreted, creating tension.

Instagram reassured users that not all interactions will be shared.

The platform’s algorithms are designed to carefully select which likes and comments will be visible to others, in order to prevent the exposure of potentially embarrassing or harmful content.

Armed Assailants Invade Supreme Court, Kill Two Judges Involved In High-Profile Cases Of National Security, Terrorism

Two judges were fatally shot on Saturday in a targeted attack at Iran’s Supreme Court in Tehran, state media reported.

According to Mizan Online, the judiciary’s official website, the assailant infiltrated the court with the intent of assassinating the two judges, Ali Razini and Mohammad Moghisseh, both of whom were known for their work on high-profile cases involving national security, espionage, and terrorism.

The attack took place in the morning, when the gunman entered the judges’ office and opened fire before taking his own life.

One other person was reported injured during the incident.

While the identity and motive of the attacker remain unclear, Mizan noted that he was not involved in any ongoing cases before the Supreme Court.

The two judges had significant roles within Iran’s judicial system. Moghisseh, 68, had been sanctioned by the United States in 2019 for overseeing trials that were criticized for lacking fairness.

Razini, 71, was previously targeted in a 1998 assassination attempt when a bomb was planted in his vehicle.

While shootings targeting judges are uncommon in Iran, the country has witnessed a series of high-profile killings in recent years, including the deaths of a Shiite Muslim preacher and a prominent cleric in separate incidents.

An investigation into the Supreme Court attack has been launched by Iranian authorities.

Final-Year Akwa-Ibom Poly Student Murdered In His Room By Gunmen

A final-year student of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, identified simply as Prince, was shot dead in his room by suspected cultists on Wednesday.

The tragic incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. at Prince’s residence on Abuja Street in Ikot Osurua. Prince, a Higher National Diploma (HND2) Computer Science student, had recently completed his final exams and was preparing to defend his project.

According to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen stormed the compound, went directly to Prince’s room, and shot him in the abdomen.

His girlfriend, who was present during the attack, raised the alarm after the assailants fled, drawing the attention of neighbors.

A neighbor, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that Prince was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries.

“The gunmen didn’t steal anything or rob anyone in the compound. They just shot him and left. He was popular in the neighborhood and active in his church choir. We were shocked at how he died,” the source said.

The neighbor recalled seeing Prince with his girlfriend the previous day, noting their cheerful demeanor.

“I saw them around 4 p.m. on Tuesday. They both wore face masks, and when I joked about it, we all laughed. It’s hard to believe he’s gone,” the source added.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command confirmed the incident.

DSP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer, stated that the area had experienced robbery and cult-related activities.

“Information at our disposal indicates that there were robbery and cult operations in the area. They invaded and robbed, during which a student was shot. Investigation is ongoing,” DSP John said.

Katsina Launches Pilot Programme For Electric Tricycles, Eyes Future Expansion

The Katsina State Government has initiated a pilot programme to assess the feasibility of locally assembled electric tricycles as part of its plans for large-scale commercial deployment.

Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, during the ceremony marking the rollout of five electric tricycles manufactured by IRS, a Nigerian company, emphasized the government’s commitment to purchasing the vehicles in bulk, contingent on their performance throughout the test phase.

“We will closely monitor these tricycles’ durability and maintenance requirements before making any decisions on large-scale procurement,” Radda stated.

He also noted that feedback on the tricycles’ profitability and real-world performance would be essential to the decision-making process.

In a move aimed at ensuring a fair evaluation, Radda instructed the leadership of the Commercial Tricycle Operators Association to select five trusted members for the pilot programme.

Technical Assistant in the Department of Power and Energy, Engr. Kabir Abdullahi, highlighted the innovative features of the electric tricycles.

Each vehicle is equipped with a 450-watt solar panel and a battery storage system, providing a range of up to 150 kilometers per charge, with the capacity to carry up to 300 kilograms.

Abdullahi also emphasized the environmental and cost-saving benefits of the technology, which would reduce fuel expenses and provide a quieter, greener alternative to traditional tricycles.

Jamilu Isiyaku, Chairman of the Keke Napep Riders Association, expressed gratitude to the Governor for addressing their call for solar-powered tricycles and promised that the test vehicles would be managed responsibly throughout the trial period.

Voter Apathy Mar Ondo Local Government Election

Voter turnout in Ondo State’s local government elections on Saturday was notably low, with many polling units reporting minimal participation throughout the day.

The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) confirmed that 13 political parties had candidates contesting, but the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), withdrew from the election on Wednesday, citing doubts about the credibility of the electoral process.

Polling stations opened at 8 am, but by mid-morning, many electoral officers were still waiting for voters.

For instance, at Sacred Heart Primary School in Akure, fewer than 20 voters had cast their ballots by 11:30 am.

Similar low turnout was observed across various polling units, including Ward 4, Unit 27, and Unit 7, with very few voters showing up.

Despite the low turnout, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, who voted at Polling Unit 7 in Ward 4, Akure South Local Government Area, praised the peaceful and smooth conduct of the election.

Adeniyan noted that while voter turnout could have been better, the overall process had been encouraging and incident-free.

Governor Aiyedatiwa, who voted in Ugbo Ward 4 in Ilaje Local Government Area, commended the ODIEC for ensuring a smooth election and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening local government autonomy and ensuring effective governance at the grassroots level.

Trump’s Inauguration Moved Indoors Due To Freezing Weather

US President-elect Donald Trump announced on January 17, 2025, that his inauguration ceremony, originally scheduled to take place outdoors, will now be held indoors in the Rotunda of the US Capitol due to expected freezing temperatures.

Trump shared the news on his Truth Social platform, attributing the change to an “Arctic blast” sweeping across the nation.

He stated that prayers, speeches, and his inaugural address would all take place inside the Capitol Rotunda, which has a limited capacity of a few hundred people.

The move means Trump will not address the crowd from the steps of the Capitol, overlooking the National Mall, a space traditionally used for the inaugural ceremonies.

Instead, he said, supporters could view the event live at Washington’s Capital One Arena, where Trump planned to join the crowd after the swearing-in ceremony.

The shift comes after forecasts predicted dangerous cold, with temperatures expected to drop well below freezing and strong winds adding to the chill.

Preparations had already been made for a large turnout on the Mall, but most spectators will now need to watch the event on television.

This will be the first time since Ronald Reagan’s 1985 inauguration that such an emergency measure has been taken due to weather.

Trump, who will become the oldest person to assume the presidency at 78, promised that the ceremony in the Rotunda would still be a “beautiful experience,” especially for the large TV audience.

While some attendees may be disappointed by the weather-related change, Trump supporters remain excited, with some expressing their anticipation for the event’s viewing at the arena.

Additionally, the traditional parade along Pennsylvania Avenue will still take place, with security measures already in place to ensure safety during the event.

Ondo LG Poll: Gov. Aiyedatiwa Casts Ballot, Mocks PDP’s Withdrawal

Ondo State Governor, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and his deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, have praised the smooth conduct of the ongoing local government elections across the state.

The election, which is being held in all 18 local government areas, has seen participation from no fewer than 12 political parties across 203 wards.

Governor Aiyedatiwa criticized the last-minute withdrawal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the election, calling it an act of “cowardice.”

He stated, “For the PDP to pull out, that is cowardness. They participated in the whole process, the ODIEC released the timetable for the election. I don’t know the reason for that. Maybe the fear of losing, every election has its own logistics and other political parties are participating whatever reason that made them withdraw, I am not privy to that.”

Aiyedatiwa, who cast his vote at Polling Unit 5, Ugbo Ward 4 in Ilaje Local Government, emphasized that the election is a step forward for grassroots development and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the local government system in accordance with the law.

Meanwhile, Deputy Governor Adelami, who voted at Unit 16, Igboroko 2, Ward 3, Owo Local Government, expressed satisfaction with the voter turnout and urged more citizens to exercise their civic duties.

He added, “It is important to vote in this election to enable us to deepen delivery of good governance at the grassroots level because it is the tier of government that is closest to the people.”
