Court Declares Lakurawa Sect A Terrorist Organization, Issues Proscription Order

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a ruling declaring the Lakurawa sect a terrorist organization and proscribing its activities across Nigeria.

The court’s decision followed an ex-parte application submitted by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).

In his ruling, Justice Omotosho also proscribed other groups with similar activities operating primarily in the North West and North Central regions of the country.

The court order stated that the activities of the Lakurawa sect, along with similar groups, are acts of terrorism and unlawful behavior.

It further declared that these groups, operating under any name or platform, should be banned in Nigeria.

The ruling included several key provisions:

  • The proscription of the Lakurawa sect and other similar groups from operating in any part of Nigeria, particularly in the North West and North Central regions.
  • The prohibition of individuals or groups from engaging in any activities supporting or promoting the objectives of the Lakurawa sect under any other guise.
  • The outlawing of groups with comparable objectives to the Lakurawa sect, including involvement in banditry, kidnapping, mass abductions, cattle rustling, and various forms of violence, including rape, torture, and attacks on communities and security personnel.

The application to the court was presented by Assistant Director in the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr. David Kaswe, following a motion filed on January 14 by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar.

In support of the motion, Mr. Michael Akawu, a litigation officer in the Department of Public Prosecutions, submitted an affidavit detailing the sect’s involvement in various criminal acts such as cattle rustling, kidnapping for ransom, hostage-taking, and attacks on government officials and security personnel.

The federal government argued that the Lakurawa sect’s actions fit the criteria for proscription under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act.

The government emphasized that declaring the sect a terrorist organization would serve the broader interests of national security, justice, and peace within Nigeria.

Tax Reform: Group Rejects Governors Over 50% VAT Sharing Formula

As the National Assembly reviews the proposed tax reforms, the Citizens Network for Peace and Development in Nigeria (CNPD) has raised objections to the Nigeria Governors Forum’s (NGF) suggested VAT sharing formula, which allocates 50% based on equity, 30% on derivation, and 20% on population.

At a press conference in Abuja, CNPD’s National Coordinator, Mr. Okorie Ikechukwu Raphael, argued that the formula proposed by the NGF fails to factor in productivity and economic growth, key elements in determining a state’s contribution to the national economy.

CNPD warned that this omission could unfairly disadvantage states that are working hard to diversify their economies and drive growth.

The group called on the National Assembly to reconsider the formula and adopt a more balanced approach that rewards states based on their productivity and economic progress.

While expressing concerns about the proposed VAT formula, CNPD acknowledged the potential of the tax reform bills to redirect revenues from taxation into vital sectors like education, healthcare, and rural development, which could help reduce poverty and inequality.

“We fully support the inclusive nature of the proposed tax reform,” the group said.

“This reform is designed to stimulate small and medium enterprises (SMEs), support grassroots entrepreneurship, and promote economic diversification, all of which are essential for long-term sustainable growth.”

CNPD particularly commended the provisions of the Tax Reform Bill that exempt individuals and households earning less than ₦1 million per year, as well as companies with annual earnings below ₦50 million, from taxation.

The group described this as a significant move to alleviate poverty and encourage economic inclusivity.

By shielding low-income earners and small businesses from heavy taxes, CNPD believes the reform will foster job creation, boost economic growth, and improve living standards.

The group strongly advocates for the swift passage of the Tax Reform Bill to benefit the country’s most vulnerable populations.

Praising President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his economic team for their vision behind the reform, CNPD emphasized that if implemented with transparency and fairness, the Tax Reform Bill could become a vital tool for poverty reduction and equitable economic redistribution in Nigeria.

The group urged the National Assembly to prioritize the interests of the common people, noting that the tax reform should not be subjected to political or regional disputes.

They stressed the importance of unity and shared responsibility, stating that what impacts one Nigerian affects all.

CNPD further called for support for the democratic process and encouraged citizens to participate in the upcoming Public Hearing stage to contribute their views on the proposed reforms.

They urged those advocating for changes to rethink their positions and allow the legislative process to proceed without hindrance.

US Deports Over 500 Undocumented Immigrants

U.S authorities have arrested 538 individuals in a large-scale operation targeting illegal immigrants, which saw hundreds of deportations just days into President Donald Trump’s second term.

According to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, the deportations were carried out using military aircraft, marking what she described as “the largest massive deportation operation in history.”

Leavitt emphasized that the operation fulfilled Trump’s campaign promises to crack down on illegal immigration.

The president has continued to prioritize immigration reform, signing executive orders declaring a “national emergency” at the southern border and deploying more troops to assist with enforcement.

Earlier in the week, Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka condemned an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid, where undocumented residents and even some citizens were detained without warrants.

Additionally, the Republican-led U.S. Congress recently approved a bill to expand pretrial detention for foreign criminal suspects, further tightening immigration policies.

Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger Announces Plan To Launch Common Passport As They Depart ECOWAS

The military governments of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have announced the launch of a new common passport, which will come into effect on January 29.

This marks the date the three countries formally exit the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), a decision they made after severing ties with the regional bloc last year.

The three nations, which have experienced military coups between 2020 and 2023, formed the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) as a political and security alliance.

This move comes after they criticized ECOWAS for being overly influenced by France and failing to adequately support their fight against jihadist insurgencies.

The AES passports will replace the ECOWAS travel documents, although current ECOWAS passports will remain valid until their expiration dates.

However, citizens of the three countries can exchange their old ECOWAS passports for the new AES ones.

The three countries also announced plans to collaborate on creating a 5,000-member unit to combat growing jihadist violence in the region.

Since taking power, the juntas in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have shifted their alliances, distancing themselves from France and seeking closer ties with Russia and other new partners.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has announced that 10,000 newly recruited police constables will be deployed to their states of origin as part of a community policing initiative.

This announcement was made in a statement by the Nigeria Police Force spokesperson, ACP Olumiyiwa Adejobi, on Thursday.

The constables, who recently completed a six-month training program at various police colleges, will now take up roles in strengthening local law enforcement.

The IGP also revealed plans to expand recruitment efforts, targeting the annual enlistment of 30,000 constables in line with President Bola Tinubu’s approval.

The IGP highlighted that this recruitment drive, taking place across 04 premier colleges and 12 training schools nationwide, was part of a broader effort to enhance the police force’s ability to tackle the country’s security challenges.

Egbetokun further praised the recruits for completing their rigorous training and assured that the comprehensive curriculum they had followed had adequately prepared them for the complexities of modern policing.

“It Is Blatantly Unconstitutional” – US Judge Halts Trump’s Controversial Executive Order On Birthright Citizenship

A U.S federal judge on Thursday issued a temporary injunction halting President Donald Trump’s controversial executive order aimed at limiting birthright citizenship.

The ruling, which blocks the enforcement of the order for 14 days, follows legal challenges filed by 22 states, two cities, and multiple civil rights organizations.

Senior U.S. District Judge John Coughenour, who was appointed by Republican President Ronald Reagan, strongly criticized the executive order, calling it “blatantly unconstitutional.”

During the hearing in Washington state, he emphasized the clarity of the case, saying, “I can’t remember another case where the question presented is as clear as this one.”

The order, signed by Trump shortly after his inauguration for a second term, sought to redefine birthright citizenship, arguing that individuals in the U.S. illegally or on a visa should not be considered “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States and therefore not entitled to citizenship by birth.

Birthright citizenship has long been a cornerstone of U.S. law, enshrined in the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which guarantees that anyone born on U.S. soil automatically becomes a citizen. The ruling represents a significant setback for Trump’s immigration policies and comes amid ongoing debates over the interpretation of the 14th Amendment.

Rivers Crisis: PDP NWC Members Reaffirm Support For Governor Fubara

Members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have expressed their unwavering support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s leadership in Rivers State, following a recent court ruling that nullified the party’s congresses in the state.

The NWC members, led by PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, visited Governor Fubara at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Wednesday evening.

The delegation held a private meeting with the Governor, where they discussed the party’s direction and future in Rivers.

National Treasurer of the PDP, Ahmed Mohammed, emphasized that Governor Fubara remains the party’s leader in Rivers, reaffirming their commitment to his leadership.

He explained that the visit was part of the PDP’s broader strategy to realign and strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

Mohammed also stressed the need for unity, stability, and effective repositioning within the state’s party structures.

The delegation also showed support for Ude Okoye, who was reinstated as the party’s National Secretary by the Court of Appeal, urging all stakeholders and governors to unite behind him for the party’s success.

This visit follows a series of discussions with PDP Youth leaders, who also met with Governor Fubara to address internal party challenges and reaffirm his leadership.

The internal dispute stemmed from the court ruling that nullified the results of the 2023 PDP congresses in Rivers, which were originally dominated by allies of former Governor Nyesom Wike.

The ruling, which followed a clash of court orders, led to the formation of an interim committee tasked with overseeing the party’s affairs in the state.

Manufacture In US Or Face Tariffs – Trump Threatens Global Leaders

In his first major speech since returning to the White House, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to global business leaders, urging them to manufacture their products in the United States or face steep tariffs.

Speaking remotely at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday, Trump reiterated his administration’s commitment to reshaping U.S. trade policies, which include potential tariffs on key trading partners such as Canada, Mexico, and China, starting February 1.

Trump, who was inaugurated earlier this week, emphasized that businesses that set up operations in the U.S. would benefit from some of the lowest tax rates in the world.

However, he made it clear that those who choose not to relocate their manufacturing to America would be subject to tariffs.

“Come make your product in America and we will give you among the lowest taxes of any nation on earth,” Trump stated, adding, “But if you don’t make your product in America, which is your prerogative, then very simply you will have to pay a tariff.”

In addition to his remarks on trade, Trump suggested that lower oil prices could end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, calling on Saudi Arabia and OPEC to reduce oil prices.

“If the price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately,” he claimed.

Trump also expressed optimism about his future relationship with China, but emphasized that fairness in trade was his primary goal.

His administration’s previous tariff war with China remains a key element of his economic policy.

In a wide-ranging speech, Trump also signaled plans to pressure the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates, stating, “I’ll demand that interest rates drop immediately.”

He added that he expected interest rates to decrease globally as well.

Trump also made controversial statements regarding gender, declaring that the U.S. would adopt an official policy recognizing only two genders, male and female.

He also criticized the participation of men in women’s sports and stated that gender surgeries should be rare.

Since taking office, Trump has prioritized a significant overhaul of U.S. trade policies, with a focus on imposing tariffs and taxes on foreign countries to benefit American citizens.

He has signed an executive order directing government agencies to investigate trade deficits and unfair practices, setting the stage for more tariffs in the future.

Mexico Prepares Emergency Shelters For Trump’s Deported Migrants

In response to President Donald Trump’s threat of mass deportations, the Mexican military swiftly began setting up emergency shelters near the U.S.-Mexico border on Thursday.

The Mexican government revealed plans to open nine shelters for Mexican citizens and three additional shelters for foreign nationals who are deported.

The initiative, known as “Mexico Embraces You,” aims to provide temporary assistance to those affected by the upcoming deportations.

In Matamoros, a city in Tamaulipas state across from Brownsville, Texas, Navy personnel erected large olive-green tents in a sports field, with one shelter expected to accommodate up to 3,000 people, according to local authorities.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that the country would provide humanitarian aid to deported migrants before arranging for their repatriation.

Trump, who returned to office earlier this week, declared a national emergency at the southern border and promised to deport “millions and millions” of migrants.

His administration has also reinstated the “Remain in Mexico” policy, which forces individuals seeking asylum in the U.S. to wait in Mexico until their claims are processed.

The U.S. government has also suspended an asylum program for those fleeing authoritarian regimes in Latin America, leaving thousands stranded on the Mexican side of the border.

Additionally, the U.S. has increased military presence at the border with Trump’s recent order of 1,500 additional troops.

Mexico is also preparing a new mobile app that will allow migrants to send alerts if they face imminent detention in the U.S, particularly concerning the large number of undocumented Mexican nationals.
