Soludo’s Wife Vows Justice For Woman Killed By Husband In Abagana

Dr. Nonye Soludo, wife of Anambra State Governor, has pledged to ensure the prosecution of the man responsible for setting his wife on fire in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area.

The tragic incident, which gained widespread attention after a video went viral, has sparked outrage across the state.

Speaking to journalists in Awka on Thursday, Dr. Soludo, who is also the founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, expressed her determination to follow the case closely and ensure justice for the victim.

She revealed that she had directed an immediate visit to the scene after learning about the incident and had received reports from the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, and the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, who had both visited the location.

“I have seen the disturbing video, and I made sure to visit the site immediately. I will make sure the case is pursued until justice is served,” Dr. Soludo stated.

The victim, Mrs. Chioma Nwaka, a mother of five boys, was severely burned after her husband, Mr. Sunday Nwaka, allegedly doused her in fuel and set her on fire following a domestic dispute.

Eyewitnesses recounted how neighbors and passersby rushed to put out the fire, but the damage was already done.

The victim was later rushed to a hospital in Enugwu-Ukwu, where she succumbed to her injuries and was declared dead around 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

The suspect, Mr. Nwaka, has been apprehended and is expected to face charges for his actions.

Describing the incident as both horrific and cruel, Dr. Soludo condemned the increasing prevalence of domestic violence and abuse, calling for societal reform.

She emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to combat drug abuse and related issues, which she identified as contributors to the problem.

“The Anambra State government takes domestic violence seriously, and we will ensure that those responsible for such heinous acts are held accountable,” Dr. Soludo said.

“The government will also provide support for the five children left behind by the victim.”

She reiterated the government’s commitment to tackling domestic violence, ensuring justice for victims, and supporting families affected by such tragedies.

Striking Doctors Challenge Wike, Akpabio To Use FCT Hospitals

Resident doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have challenged the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to experience the conditions of public health facilities by using government hospitals in Abuja.

The doctors, currently on a three-day warning strike over unpaid salaries and allowances, argue that government officials should personally witness the challenges faced by health workers and patients in the capital’s hospitals.

“If we are serious about improving the healthcare system, every government official must use the government hospitals,” said George Ebong, President of the FCT Resident Doctors Association, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday.

Ebong called for action, stating, “I want to see the minister use Wuse General Hospital, the Senate President use Maitama General Hospital, and the Speaker use Iyanya General Hospital. Only then can we begin to address the system’s issues.”

The doctors’ strike, which began Wednesday, has halted activities in several government hospitals across Abuja, including Wuse, Asokoro, Maitama, Kubwa, Zuba, Kwali, Abaji, Nyanya, and others.

The strike follows the expiration of a three-week ultimatum given to the government, citing grievances over unpaid wages and poor working conditions.

Ebong accused Wike and other government officials of neglecting healthcare in the FCT.

He acknowledged the minister’s focus on infrastructural projects like road repairs but stressed that the nation’s hospitals are in dire need of attention.

“The minister has been busy fixing roads and bridges, but our hospitals are in a deplorable state,” Ebong stated.

“We feel like the human abandoned project. No matter what infrastructure projects are undertaken, hospitals must be the first priority for improvement.”

The doctor further explained that FCT hospitals suffer from chronic issues such as inadequate electricity, a lack of medical supplies, malfunctioning diagnostic machines, and a shortage of staff.

He pointed out that some hospitals in the capital are staffed with only one doctor.

Ebong also revealed that many doctors have not been paid their salaries for up to six months despite their hard work and increased responsibilities.

He mentioned that while the minister had only met with them once, they had sent multiple letters outlining their concerns.

He criticized the bureaucratic delays preventing proper action from being taken and urged Wike to visit the hospitals and assess the current situation himself.

“We urge the minister to ensure all unpaid wages are settled and to visit the hospitals to see their condition firsthand,” Ebong said.

If no significant progress is made after the warning strike, Ebong warned that the association may resort to an indefinite shutdown, as the congress would have no choice but to escalate the protest.

Resolve LP Crisis Now Or Become Irrelevant In 2027 – Stakeholders Warn Obi

The Alliance for All Labour Party Professionals and Stakeholders (AALPS) has expressed grave concerns over the alleged destabilisation of the Labour Party by Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate.

In a statement issued by the group’s National Convener, Dr. Blessing Elaigwu, AALPS warned that Obi’s actions were putting the party’s future at risk and could have disastrous consequences in the 2027 general elections.

The group accused Obi of fostering division and litigation within the party, which it believes is undermining its unity and growth.

AALPS specifically pointed to Obi’s alleged role in supporting an attempt to replace the Labour Party’s legitimate leadership, headed by Julius Abure, with his supporters during a contentious stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia last year.

Elaigwu emphasised that the ongoing infighting within the party was hindering its progress, especially as other political parties are already planning for 2027.

He added that Obi’s actions were weakening the party’s foundation and betraying the trust placed in him by millions of Nigerians.

Enugu: Jubilation In Aninri LGA As Ekweremadu’s Wife Returns

The news of Beatrice Ekweremadu’s release and return to Nigeria sparked wild celebrations in Mpu, Aninri LGA, Enugu State, on Wednesday.

Traders at the Orie Mpu market, especially women, joyfully abandoned their stalls to celebrate the return of the wife of Nigeria’s former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, after she served a prison sentence in the United Kingdom.

Beatrice Ekweremadu and her husband, Ike, had both been sentenced for organ trafficking offenses by the Central Criminal Court in London.

While Beatrice was sentenced to four and a half years in March 2023, Ike was sentenced to nine years and eight months for the same crime.

Despite their convictions, news that Beatrice had completed her jail term and returned to Nigeria brought great relief and excitement to her hometown, as she was reunited with her family in Abuja.

In Mpu, her community, the announcement of her return sparked a frenzy of celebration.

Women at the market broke into song and dance, leaving their businesses behind to take part in the joyous occasion.

Many expressed hope that Ike would also soon return.

Benjamin Chijioke, President General of Mpu Town Union Federated, confirmed the news and said that the entire community was overwhelmed with happiness.

“It’s a great day for us. The whole village has been in celebration since morning. People are shedding tears of joy, especially those who depended on the Ekweremadu family’s philanthropy,” Chijioke said.

“We pray for God’s intervention so that our beloved son, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, will soon return to us.”

Chijioke also reflected on the impact the Ekweremadu family’s absence had on the community.

“We’ve missed them greatly, but we thank God for everything,” he added.

Other community members, like Emejonwu Abajonu, echoed these sentiments, expressing gratitude and optimism that Ike would return soon.

“To God alone be the glory. Ike will soon be back,” Abajonu said.

Kingsley Chioke also celebrated the moment, saying, “Waoooh! One down, one to go. Congratulations to us. We give all the glory to God.”

Wife Dies After Husband Sets Her Ablaze Over Alleged Infidelity

A tragic incident occurred in Abagana community, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, when a middle-aged woman, Mrs. Chioma Nwana, was set ablaze by her husband over accusations of infidelity.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening at Eziezekwe village in Abagana.

Mrs. Nwana, who sustained severe burns, was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment but tragically passed away the following morning.

Investigations revealed that the couple had been experiencing frequent arguments due to the husband’s allegations that his wife had been unfaithful.

On the night of the incident, it is reported that Mrs. Nwana returned home, and her husband confronted her, accusing her of being involved with another man.

In a fit of rage, he allegedly poured petrol on her and set her on fire.

A source close to the family stated, “Mrs. Chioma Nwana, who lived with her husband and their six children, was burned by her husband on Tuesday evening. She was rushed to the hospital but sadly died from her injuries on Wednesday morning.”

After committing the act, the husband reportedly went to the Abagana Divisional Police Station and voluntarily reported the incident, claiming that his wife’s alleged affairs were destroying their home.

He told the police that she had returned from one of these men’s houses on the day of the incident.

When contacted for a comment, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Toochukwu Ikenga, did not answer calls regarding the case.

Tribunal Admits Evidence Of Over-Voting In Edo Deputy Governor’s LGA

The Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, resumed its proceedings on January 22, 2025, with a witness from the Ovia South West Local Government Area (LGA) providing testimony regarding over-voting that allegedly benefited the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the September 21, 2024, Edo State Governorship Election.

The witness, a Collation Agent for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ovia South West, presented evidence that in seven polling units in the LGA, the number of votes cast surpassed the number of accredited voters.

The affected polling units were PUs 014, 007, 004, 006, 016, 028, and 034. Notably, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, the APC candidate’s running mate and now Deputy Governor, is from Ovia South West.

In his testimony at the hearing of petition EPT/ED/GOV/02/2024, the PDP Collation Agent stated that despite clear evidence of over-voting in these polling units, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to annul the results.

The witness also confirmed that PDP agents had raised objections to the over-voting, but their protests were disregarded by INEC’s presiding officers.

The witness supported his claims with various documents, including the BVAS accreditation report, certified true copies (CTC) of Result Sheets Form EC8A-C, CTCs from the IREV, and BVAS extracts from INEC.

Counsels for the first respondent, INEC (Kanu Agabi, SAN), and the second respondent (Okpebholo, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN), had raised objections to the admission of the witness’s statement on oath, but the tribunal overruled the objections and accepted the evidence.

The hearing continues as the PDP presents more witnesses.

Trump Orders Raids On Schools, Churches, Hospitals To Enforce Deportation

President Donald Trump has ordered U.S. immigration authorities to carry out raids on schools, churches, and hospitals as part of an aggressive effort to arrest and deport undocumented immigrants.

This policy shift comes amidst a series of executive orders and has raised concerns both domestically and internationally, particularly in countries like Nigeria.

Previously, certain locations such as schools, churches, and hospitals were considered “sensitive areas” where enforcement actions were restricted.

However, Trump’s new directive reverses these policies, giving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) more authority to arrest individuals in these spaces.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued the statement on Tuesday, detailing the change and emphasizing the need to eliminate any sanctuary spaces where individuals might evade arrest.

Acting DHS Secretary Benjamine Huffman explained that the new policy would empower ICE officers to act without restrictions, ensuring criminals cannot hide in places like schools and churches to avoid deportation.

“Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest,” the statement read.

“The Trump Administration will not tie the hands of our brave law enforcement officers and trusts them to use common sense.”

The directive also includes a nationwide reinstatement of expedited removal procedures, which allow ICE to quickly deport individuals unable to prove continuous residence in the U.S. for over two years.

This aligns with the administration’s broader efforts to tighten immigration laws and reduce the number of undocumented immigrants in the country.

In addition to these changes, Trump signed several executive orders this week, including one to suspend the refugee system and block access to an app that facilitates U.S. entry.

The administration also aims to strengthen collaboration between ICE and local law enforcement agencies.

ICE officials have confirmed that operations to arrest and deport undocumented individuals will begin immediately.

Tom Homan, the president’s border czar, stated that ICE officers would be actively enforcing immigration laws across the nation.

However, these policies have drawn criticism from various advocacy groups.

The Center for Law and Social Policy expressed concerns over the negative impact on immigrant families, particularly those with children who are U.S. citizens.

They worry that families may be discouraged from seeking essential services like medical care, disaster relief, and education due to fear of deportation.

Religious leaders have also condemned the move.

At an inaugural prayer service, the Episcopal Bishop of Washington called on the administration to show greater compassion toward immigrants and vulnerable communities.

Police Arrest Man After Mutilated Body Of Wife Found In Bag

John Kiama Wambua, a 29-year-old man, was arrested in Huruma, Nairobi, after being found with a bag containing mutilated body parts of his 19 year old wife, Joy Fridah Munani

Police in Kenya arrested Wednesday a man found carrying the mutilated corpse of his wife in a backpack, the latest case of gender-based violence to appal the country.

It comes only weeks after hundreds of women were tear gassed as they rallied in the capital Nairobi to demonstrate against femicide and demand action from the authorities.

A murder investigation has been launched after John Kiama Wambua, 29, was detained by Nairobi police at around 5:00 am (0200 GMT), when a routine patrol examined his bag.

Officers suspected the man of carrying illegal goods, but “to their shock discovered part of a mutilated human body”, the directorate of criminal investigations said on X.

Police said Wambua was “unperturbed” by the discovery of the body parts, which he said during an interrogation were of his 19-year-old wife, Joy Fridah Munani.

He led officers to the couple’s home, where police found a “horrendous” scene with a bloody floor, blood-stained clothes and the murder weapon “a sharp knife”.

They said more human remains were found beneath a bed, but “some body parts were still missing”.

In November, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights said it had recorded 97 murders of women in the last three months.

Domestic violence periodically hits the headlines in the East African nation, with activists repeatedly warning of femicide.

Last year, the country was left horrified by the killing of Ugandan Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei, who was doused in petrol and set alight in Kenya by her boyfriend.

She was just the latest woman athlete to lose her life in domestic abuse, after Agnes Tirop and Damaris Mutua.

INEC Announces Date For FCT Area Council Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the election for the six area councils in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, will take place on February 21, 2026.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the announcement during a consultative meeting with political party leaders at the INEC conference center in Abuja.

Yakubu emphasized that the FCT Area Council elections are unique, as they are the only local government elections conducted by INEC in the country.

He referred to Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which mandates that election notices be issued at least 360 days before the scheduled date.

The last FCT Area Council election was held on February 12, 2022.

Yakubu confirmed that the current tenure of the Chairmen and Councillors in the FCT will expire next year, and the 2026 election is set for Saturday, February 21.

The election will take place across 68 constituencies, where voters will choose six Area Council Chairmen and 62 Councillors.

In accordance with legal requirements, the notice for the election will be published on February 26, 2025, while party primaries are scheduled to occur between June 9 and June 30, 2025.

Yakubu also provided updates on other electoral activities, including the resumption of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) and the conduct of pending bye-elections.

He highlighted that since the inauguration of the current National and State Assemblies in June 2023, 23 constituencies have experienced vacancies due to the deaths of serving members or their resignation to take up executive roles.

While the Commission conducted nine bye-elections earlier in the year, Yakubu revealed that 14 more vacancies have arisen since then.

He lamented the unpredictability and costs of bye-elections, noting that some lead to multiple by-elections in a chain reaction.

Yakubu reiterated INEC’s advocacy for a more cost-effective approach to filling vacancies, similar to practices in other countries, and called on stakeholders, including political parties, and the National Assembly to support changes in the law.

He expressed hope that continued collaboration would drive further electoral reforms in Nigeria.

Teaching Hospital Returns Over N1 Billion To Federal Government

The management of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) has refunded more than N1 billion to the Federal Government, representing unpaid salaries for staff members who left the hospital for opportunities abroad.

This amount was drawn from the hospital’s 2024 budget.

Prof. Emem Bassey, Chief Medical Director (CMD) of UUTH, expressed concerns about the impact of the “Japa” phenomenon, where medical professionals are migrating abroad, and warned that if the Federal Government does not address this issue, Nigeria’s teaching hospitals might lose even more qualified staff.

Prof. Bassey made these remarks in Abuja during a budget defense session before the House of Representatives committee on tertiary health institutions.

He detailed UUTH’s 2024 capital appropriation, which stood at N20.6 billion, broken down into N12.8 billion for personnel costs, N240 million for overhead, and N7.5 billion for capital expenses.

However, only N11.8 billion was released for personnel expenses, leaving a balance of over N1 billion that could not be used due to unfilled recruitment positions by year’s end.

The CMD also mentioned that, while the hospital successfully achieved a 99 percent release of overhead funds, a delay by the Federal Executive Council slowed progress on the radio diagnostics center project.

For 2025, UUTH is proposing a budget of N19.93 billion for overhead costs and N21 billion for capital projects.
