Six Family Members Die From Suspected Generator Fume Poisoning As Rivers Police Begin Investigation

Tragedy struck in Ogale Eleme community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, as six members of a family were found dead in their residence on Sunday.

The bodies were discovered at about 3:00 pm after police operatives forced open the door of the apartment following a distress call from a relative.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said preliminary findings point to possible generator fume poisoning.

She explained that the generator was allegedly left running inside the parlour while the victims went to sleep, leading to the fatal incident.

According to Iringe-Koko, the case was reported by a family member, Godwin Ogosu, who raised the alarm after his elder brother, his wife and their children failed to wake up the following morning, with the doors still locked.

She said officers from the Eleme Police Division immediately responded to the scene and forced open the door, where they found the occupants lifeless.

The deceased were identified as Theophilus Obele, 49; his wife, Eunice Obele, 35; Saka Obele, 18; Peace Obele, 14; Nyimenka Obele, 7; and Abel Nwaka, 25.

The police spokesperson noted that the bodies have been deposited at Last Home Mortuary in Ebubu Eleme for autopsy, while photographic evidence has been taken.

She added that the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a thorough investigation to fully establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Iringe-Koko also used the opportunity to warn residents against the indoor use of generators, advising that they should be placed in well-ventilated outdoor spaces away from doors, windows and vents to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Rivers State Police Command expressed its condolences to the bereaved family and members of the community.

JAMB Orders Universities To Cancel Admissions Granted Outside Guidelines

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has ordered tertiary institutions found to have violated admission procedures to immediately reverse such admissions.

The directive followed the discovery of cases where candidates with higher rankings were allegedly bypassed in favour of those with lower scores, a practice JAMB described as a clear breach of established admission rules.

The board announced the decision in its weekly bulletin released on Monday in Abuja and signed by its Public Communication Adviser, Fabian Benjamin.

According to the bulletin, JAMB observed that some institutions conducted admissions in a manner that undermined merit, noting that “higher-ranked candidates are reportedly being skipped in favour of lower-ranked candidates.”

JAMB said it had issued warnings to the affected institutions and instructed them to undo all irregular admissions without delay.

It also reiterated the need for strict compliance with admission guidelines across all tertiary institutions.

The board restated that admissions into higher institutions are guided by a three-tier structure of Merit, Catchment Area, and Educationally Less Developed States, with ranking remaining the overriding criterion at every stage.

“Candidates must be selected strictly in order of ranking, starting with the highest. Any deviation from this principle under any category will not be tolerated,” the board warned.

Meanwhile, JAMB dismissed allegations by a candidate who claimed she was unjustly denied admission by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, despite scoring high marks.

The board said its investigation showed that several candidates with higher rankings were ahead of her, making her non-admission consistent with due process.

JAMB clarified that while some institutions were indeed found to have breached admission rules, the complainant was not among those affected by the identified irregularities.

Reaffirming its commitment to fairness and transparency, the board stressed that no candidate with a higher ranking would be displaced by one with a lower score.

It also cautioned candidates against spreading unverified claims on social media, advising them to seek clarification through official channels rather than promoting unfounded allegations online.

Two Rivers Assembly Members Call For Restraint As Impeachment Threatens Fubara’s Tenure

Two members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have appealed to their colleagues to halt the ongoing impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, and instead pursue alternative means of resolving the political crisis in the state.

The appeal was made on Monday in Port Harcourt during a press briefing by the Minority Leader of the House and lawmaker representing Omuma State Constituency, Sylvanus Nwankwo, alongside the member representing Degema State Constituency, Peter Abbey.

Nwankwo urged lawmakers to exercise restraint and consider dialogue as a more constructive option than impeachment.

“We are appealing to our colleagues to temper justice with mercy and explore ways of resolving this matter outside the impeachment process,” he said.

He explained that the intervention followed persistent appeals from elders and leaders within and outside Rivers State, who had called on the assembly to show leniency in handling the matter.

According to him, while there are allegations that the governor and his deputy may have breached constitutional provisions, lawmakers should reconsider their approach in the interest of peace and stability.

“We are begging our colleagues to reconsider their position and find an amicable solution, even though there are claims of constitutional infractions,” Nwankwo added.

Echoing the call, Abbey said lawmakers should adopt a humane approach, stressing that political tensions should be de-escalated rather than escalated.

“Governor Fubara may have infringed on parts of the constitution, but we are human beings.”

“We are pleading with our colleagues to reconsider the impeachment process,” he said.
Abbey also noted that the governor has a role to play in easing tensions by avoiding actions that could further violate constitutional provisions.

“The governor must also ensure that there are no further infringements on the constitution. That is key to achieving an amicable resolution,” he stated.

The Rivers State House of Assembly had last Thursday initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy.

The process followed the presentation of seven allegations of gross misconduct by the Leader of the House, Major Jack, based on a notice reportedly signed by 26 lawmakers.

The allegations include the demolition of the Assembly complex, extra-budgetary expenditures, withholding of funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission, and alleged refusal to comply with a Supreme Court ruling on the financial autonomy of state legislatures.

The impeachment move came shortly after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, accused the governor of breaching a peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu in 2025.

Former Ekiti Governor Segun Oni Dumps SDP For APC

Former Ekiti State Governor, Chief Olusegun Oni, has defected from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Oni officially joined the APC on Sunday after registering with the party at his country home in Ifaki Ekiti, Ekiti State.

The Coordinator of the APC e-registration exercise in the state, Mr Adesola Adedayo, disclosed the development on Monday in Ado Ekiti, describing Oni’s defection as a major boost to the party’s ongoing membership registration drive.

Adedayo, who also serves as Ekiti State Commissioner for Youth Development, said the former governor’s decision to align with the APC had strengthened the party’s progressive base and reinforced its grassroots mobilisation efforts.

Oni governed Ekiti State between 2007 and 2010 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party and later emerged as the SDP governorship candidate in the 2022 election.

According to Adedayo, Oni remains a popular political figure with strong grassroots appeal and is expected to add significant value to the APC ahead of future elections.

He described the defection as a major political realignment, noting that it comes at a critical period as the state prepares for the 2026 governorship poll and the 2027 general elections.

“We registered former Governor Segun Oni as a member of our great party on Sunday. This is a significant political development that will further energise our ongoing e-registration exercise across the state,” Adedayo said.

He added that the APC leadership would intensify mobilisation efforts at the grassroots and urged party members not to relent in strengthening the party’s numerical strength.

Adedayo also noted that Oni’s registration followed shortly after Governor Biodun Oyebanji revalidated his APC membership, calling on party faithful across the state to participate actively in the e-registration exercise to enhance party cohesion and documentation.

He stressed that sustained membership drives remain crucial to the growth and electoral success of the APC in Ekiti State.

Enugu Justice Ministry Set For Sweeping Reforms As Nnajieze Takes Office

The Enugu State Ministry of Justice has unveiled plans for far-reaching institutional reforms aimed at strengthening internal systems and accelerating justice delivery across the state.

The new Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Osinachi Nnajieze, made this known on Monday during his maiden meeting with staff of the ministry, held shortly after a Holy Mass officiated by Rev. Fr. Augustine Otugo at the ministry’s premises.

Barr. Nnajieze told staff that the reform agenda would be anchored on four key pillars: mandate, attitude, reform, and welfare.

He stressed that under the administration of Governor Peter Mbah, the Ministry of Justice must operate as a quality-assurance centre for justice delivery, remaining proactive in addressing emerging legal and administrative challenges while upholding strict adherence to due process.

The Attorney General, who previously served as Special Adviser to the Governor on Legal Matters, disclosed that the governor had directed that no Ministry, Department, or Agency (MDA) should enter into contractual agreements without the active involvement of legal officers from the Ministry of Justice at the negotiation stage.

According to him, the measure is designed to minimise unnecessary litigation and shield the state from avoidable legal exposure.

He further revealed that the reforms would include the development of a more effective juvenile justice framework, enhanced tracking and monitoring of cases at Magistrate Courts, the deployment of a functional civil case-management system, and faster transmission of case files from the police to prosecutors to reduce delays and improve prosecutorial efficiency.

Barr. Nnajieze added that capacity-building programmes would be introduced to boost staff competence, while the reform process would also lead to improved welfare, better working conditions, and an upgraded work environment.

“Significant changes are already underway in the ministry. The goal is to transform the environment to reflect the dignity of the legal profession. Facilities will be upgraded because the quality of our workspace affects our output. Lawyers must be treated with dignity. History rewards those who commit themselves to improving society,” he said.

He also cautioned against absenteeism and lax work habits, noting that new monitoring systems would be introduced to end the practice of staff signing in and leaving for personal engagements, only to return at closing time.

“That era is over. As the legal face of the state, we must set the standard, both in our conduct and in the discharge of our responsibilities,” he added.

In his remarks, the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Barr. Ikechukwu Ezenwukwa, welcomed the Attorney General and endorsed the reform agenda.

He assured that staff would give full cooperation in delivering the governor’s mandate, warning that management would not hesitate to discipline any officer found wanting.

“We must change our attitude to work and treat our responsibilities with the seriousness they deserve. Our dressing and conduct must reflect the dignity of our profession. Reports of inappropriate conduct, even outside the ministry, will no longer be tolerated. Every officer must work with diligence and courage, without fear or intimidation,” he said.

Heineken CEO Resigns After Six Turbulent Years

The Chief Executive Officer of Dutch brewing giant Heineken, Dolf van den Brink, has announced his resignation amid a challenging economic climate marked by declining beer sales and job cuts.

In a statement released on Monday, Heineken said Van den Brink will step down from his position on May 31, ending a nearly six-year tenure during which he steered the company through what it described as turbulent economic and political conditions.

The 52-year-old executive said the timing was appropriate for a leadership change, noting that he believed it was the right moment to hand over the reins.

The leadership transition comes at a difficult period for Heineken, the world’s second-largest brewer after AB InBev.

The company has been grappling with falling beer volumes, particularly in Europe and the United States.

Heineken’s most recent quarterly results, released in October, showed a sharp drop in beer sales, which Van den Brink attributed to a challenging operating environment that produced mixed performance across markets.

The brewer reported net sales of €7.3 billion in the third quarter, down from €7.6 billion in the previous quarter.

Also in October, the company announced plans to cut or redeploy about 400 jobs as part of a restructuring of its Amsterdam headquarters aimed at leveraging new technologies.

Following the resignation announcement, Heineken shares fell by more than four percent on the Amsterdam stock exchange, which remained largely flat overall.

The company’s board said it has begun the process of searching for a successor to lead the global brewing group.

Ugandan Opposition Leader Bobi Wine Threatens Protests Over Potential Poll Rigging

Ugandan opposition figure and presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has warned that he will call for public protests if President Yoweri Museveni is perceived to rig the country’s general election scheduled for this week.

Wine, 43, said he has told Ugandans not to wait for his instruction before taking to the streets should there be evidence of electoral manipulation.

He spoke to AFP at his home in Kampala amid mounting tension as more than 20 million voters are registered ahead of Thursday’s vote.

Observers, including the United Nations and Amnesty International, have criticised the Ugandan government for repression and hundreds of arrests of Wine’s supporters in the lead‑up to the polls.

Wine acknowledged that protests might prompt further crackdowns, but he maintained that violent regimes can be challenged through sustained pressure.

Wine’s main political rival is 81‑year‑old Museveni, who has ruled Uganda for nearly four decades and is widely expected to secure another term, with his control over state institutions and security forces aiding his incumbency.

He also said he would welcome international support including from the United States so long as such assistance did not supplant Ugandans’ own efforts to determine their political future.

The election environment remains tense, with reports of heightened security force actions and restrictions on opposition mobilisation across the country.

Anambra Community Petitions NERC Over N38m Electricity Bill Dispute

Residents of Umuodum Village, Ogba Quarters in Mbaukwu town, Awka South LGA of Anambra State, have petitioned the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) over a contested electricity bill of N38,123,672.73 issued by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).

In the petition, signed by Chukwuebuka Daniel Nweke Odum and Chukwuma Augustin Igboanugo, the community expressed concern that the bill was presented as an outstanding debt despite their claims of prior payments to EEDC.

The community’s electricity details were listed as EEDC Customer Account Number 138994651 under the name ODUM S/S.

The dispute escalated after EEDC disconnected electricity supply to the village, citing nonpayment of the alleged debt.

Residents sought clarification from former and current leaders of the Umuodum Ogba Village Development Union, who reportedly confirmed that no such liability existed during handovers of administrative duties.

The community said they were surprised when a demand letter dated November 28, 2025, requesting payment, was delivered through the youth leader rather than official administrative channels, despite EEDC being familiar with the recognized leadership structure.

The petition noted that the caretaker chairman of the village union, Mr. Izuchukwu Abana, had previously received a printout of the community’s electricity billing history from EEDC.

Based on this, the petition called on NERC to intervene and request EEDC to provide verified records of payments or clarify the status of the alleged outstanding sum.

“We respectfully request the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to review this matter and establish the true position of our electricity account, in the interest of transparency and fairness,” the petition stated.

The community stressed that their aim is to resolve the billing dispute, ensure accurate records, and restore electricity supply.

Court Orders Remand Of Ebonyi Social Media Critic Over Alleged Defamation Of SSG

A Magistrate Court in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, has ordered the remand of social media critic, Mr. Polycap Obinna Alegu, for allegedly defaming the Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government (SSG), Mrs. Grace Umezurike, on his Facebook account.

Alegu, 36, appeared before Magistrate Court I, presided over by Chief Magistrate Sandra Ifeanyi-Onyibe, facing a two-count charge of criminal defamation and cybercrime.

The charges, filed under case number MAB/7c/2026, allege that Alegu posted false and malicious content targeting the SSG on December 16, 2025.

Count One accuses him of publishing defamatory material contrary to Section 375(A) of the Criminal Code Act, Cap C38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Count Two alleges that he knowingly made false and defamatory publications online, in violation of Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act.

During proceedings, Alegu’s counsel, Mr. Sunday Ununu, challenged the authority of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to initiate the case, arguing that only the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) could institute criminal proceedings.

The Magistrate dismissed this objection, affirming that the NSCDC is empowered to prosecute cases on behalf of the AGF.

Alegu denied the allegations, claiming that his Facebook accounts were hacked and that he was not responsible for the alleged posts.

Defence counsel applied for bail, citing credible sureties, but counsel for the NSCDC, Mrs. Linda Akam, opposed the application, citing jurisdictional limitations.

The Magistrate ruled that there was a prima facie case against Alegu and directed that the case file be sent to the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) at the Ebonyi State Ministry of Justice for further legal guidance.

The matter was adjourned to January 26, 2026, for a report of compliance.

Tight Security At Kano Gov’t House Amid Gov Yusuf’s Planned Defection

Security was significantly tightened at the Kano State Government House on Monday following reports of an impending defection by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

DAILY GAZETTE observed a heavy presence of security operatives drawn from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services at the main entrance and key access points to the Government House.

Although no official confirmation has been issued regarding the planned defection, the governor is widely speculated to be weighing a move to the All Progressives Congress.

The security build-up included the deployment of no fewer than seven Armoured Personnel Carriers belonging to the police and the DSS.

The vehicles were positioned at strategic locations, including the main gate and the roundabout leading into the Government House.

The unusual security presence heightened political tension around the seat of power, as residents and observers monitored developments amid growing speculation over the governor’s next political move.
