Growing Hunger: Tinubu Far From Reality  – Bode George

Elder statesman Bode George has expressed disappointment with President Bola Tinubu’s recent media chat, accusing the President of lacking empathy for the suffering Nigerians.

George emphasized that Tinubu’s remarks on Monday were out of touch with the reality of widespread hunger and hardship in the country.

He pointed to recent incidents, including three deadly stampedes during food distribution that resulted in 67 deaths, as a stark reminder of the severe hunger and frustration gripping the nation.

“There is hunger and anger in the land,” George said during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday.

“Yet, the President continues to claim his reforms are working, while many Nigerians are growing poorer and businesses are collapsing.”

He added, “Hunger doesn’t care about your words. You have to be real.”

As a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), George criticized the President’s media appearance, stating it lacked any sign of seriousness or empathy.

“Why have a discussion at all if there’s no acknowledgment of the people’s suffering?” George asked, noting the absence of a somber tone in the exchange.

George also called for immediate action from the government, urging Tinubu to reduce the price of petrol and provide urgent relief to the Nigerians struggling under the weight of inflation, which he blamed on the administration’s policies.

Nigeria continues to face significant energy challenges, with all state-owned refineries out of operation, and the country depends heavily on imports of refined petroleum.

Following the removal of the petrol subsidy in May 2023, petrol prices surged from around N200 per litre to over N1,000, worsening the living conditions of Nigerians who rely on petrol to power vehicles and generators amid unreliable electricity supply.

Additionally, the unification of foreign exchange windows has caused the naira’s value to plummet, from approximately N700 to the dollar to over N1,600 on the parallel market, driving up the cost of food and basic goods.

Despite calls for a review of his policies, President Tinubu, during his media chat, reiterated that he stands by the removal of the petrol subsidy, arguing that Nigeria could no longer afford to subsidize fuel for neighboring countries.

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has officially signed the N971 billion 2025 Appropriation Bill into law, committing to its effective execution in line with the state’s ambitious goals for economic growth and inclusive prosperity.

The budget, referred to as the “Budget of Exponential Growth and Inclusive Prosperity,” allocates a significant N837.9 billion (86%) for capital expenditure and N133.1 billion (14%) for recurrent expenses.

Education continues to be a major priority, with the sector receiving the largest share—N320.6 billion, which is more than 33% of the entire budget—for the second consecutive year.

Governor Mbah, speaking at the signing ceremony, emphasized that the budget would serve as a catalyst for addressing the state’s development challenges.

He stressed the need for deliberate and exponential growth rather than incremental progress, assuring that his administration is dedicated to ensuring no one is left behind in the journey toward development.

“What we are witnessing today is democracy in action,” he remarked, calling the budget a “massive Christmas gift” to the people of Enugu.

In attendance were members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, led by Speaker, Uche Ugwu and Deputy Speaker, Ezenta Ezeani.

Speaker Ugwu commended the governor and the Assembly for their collaborative efforts in the budget’s preparation, which allowed for its swift passage.

He expressed confidence in the budget’s potential to bring positive change across various sectors, including education, health, infrastructure, and tourism.

Speaker Ugwu praised Governor Mbah’s administration for its successful implementation of the 2024 budget and pledged continued legislative oversight to ensure the 2025 budget is effectively executed.

He emphasized that the prioritization of education in the new budget aligns with the administration’s long-term strategy to combat poverty and empower the state’s citizens.

The 2025 budget will take effect from January 1, 2025, further driving Enugu State’s development ambitions.

PDP Slams President Tinubu’s Media Chat, Accuses APC Of Ignoring Nigerians’ Struggles

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent media chat, accusing the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration of being disconnected from the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, expressed disappointment with the President’s failure to address the worsening economic conditions faced by citizens, blaming the government’s poorly implemented policies for the hardship.

Ologunagba said, “The media session only serves to confirm the APC administration’s insensitivity to the severe hardship and suffering being experienced by Nigerians due to the party’s misguided and anti-people policies.”

A key point of contention was President Tinubu’s defense of the controversial removal of the fuel subsidy, despite the lack of measures to cushion the effects of the decision.

The PDP argued that the policy has resulted in a devastating impact on the productive sector, rising living costs, and deepening poverty for millions of Nigerians.

The PDP also took issue with the President’s admission that the government has been unable to properly police the nation’s borders, allowing the smuggling of petroleum products.

The party stated that this oversight highlights the APC administration’s failure to effectively govern.

The party further criticized the government for its inability to account for any savings resulting from the subsidy removal while Nigerians continue to bear the brunt of economic hardship.

Issues such as the struggling productive sector, the depreciating Naira, inflation reaching 34.6%, and high unemployment rates were all cited as evidence of the government’s failure to improve the lives of citizens.

In addition, Ologunagba pointed to the tragic food stampedes that led to the deaths of over 80 Nigerians as a direct result of the current administration’s policies.

He also took issue with the President’s claims of progress in road safety, contrasting this with the ongoing crisis of banditry, kidnapping, and poor infrastructure across the country.

The PDP lamented the APC’s neglect of key sectors such as agriculture, electricity, and small and medium-scale enterprises, which are vital to the country’s economic recovery.

The party urged President Tinubu to visit ordinary Nigerians by traveling from Abuja to Lagos by road or visiting markets to see firsthand the dire conditions faced by the people, instead of relying on reports from government officials.

Ologunagba concluded by calling for urgent action from the government to address the ongoing suffering and to restore public trust in the administration.

Iran Lifts Ban On WhatsApp, Google Play, Easing Internet Restrictions

Iran has lifted its ban on Meta’s WhatsApp messaging service and Google Play, marking a significant easing of its internet restrictions, according to reports from Iranian state media on Tuesday.

The Islamic Republic has long imposed tight controls on internet access, blocking many U.S.-based social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Despite this, many Iranians have found ways to bypass the restrictions by using virtual private networks (VPNs).

A meeting chaired by President Masoud Pezeshkian resulted in a “positive majority vote” that approved the lifting of the ban on WhatsApp and Google Play, among other foreign platforms.

Sattar Hashemi, Iran’s Minister of Information and Communications Technology, referred to this decision as the “first step in removing internet limitations.”

The move comes in the wake of widespread anti-government protests, where social media platforms played a crucial role in organizing demonstrations.

The government had previously imposed stricter internet censorship in response to the protests.

The United States has urged tech companies to support efforts to counter online censorship in countries with heavy restrictions, such as Iran.

An Abuja High Court has issued an interim injunction preventing the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and other parties from selling a disputed property located at Plot No. 4411, Cadastral Zone A09, Guzape District, Abuja.

The order was granted by Justice Mohammed Zubairu after an ex-parte motion was filed by Reuben Atabo, SAN, representing the applicant, Nextdora Nigeria Limited.

The motion, marked M/16807/2024, was presented to the court on Monday, with the certified true copy becoming available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday.

Justice Zubairu, sitting as a vacation judge, ruled that the application be granted in the interest of justice and fairness.

The judge stated that the interim injunction would remain in effect until all parties are served and appear before the court for the hearing of the motion on notice.

The interim order prohibits the defendants, including Wike and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), from interfering with the claimant’s possession of the property or selling it to any third party.

The order also covers any agents, servants, or representatives acting on their behalf.

The case has been adjourned until December 30 for further proceedings and to hear the substantive suit.

In the motion, filed on December 16, Nextdora Nigeria Limited had named Mr. Eric Anyamene Nnamdi, Hajiya Bilikisu Mallam, the FCT Minister, and FCDA as the defendants.

The company is seeking several orders, including a declaration of its ownership of the disputed property and a ban on any development or assignment of the land.

The court’s order comes after Nextdora Nigeria Limited raised concerns over potential unauthorized dealings with the property, which is secured by a Right of Occupancy under File No. MISC 128232.

Just In: Gunmen Abduct 18 Passengers, Demand N540 Million Ransom

Gunmen have kidnapped 18 passengers in Ekiti State, demanding a total ransom of N540 million for their release.

The incident occurred in Emure Ile, where the victims were traveling in a commercial bus from Onitsha, Anambra State, to Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

The gunmen ambushed the vehicle on Sunday, forcing the driver, Sunday Emmanuel, along with the passengers, into the bush.

A worker from the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) confirmed the incident, revealing that the kidnappers made contact with Emmanuel’s family, demanding N30 million for each of the passengers’ release.

According to the source, the kidnappers left behind several children who were in the bus, and their cries attracted attention from passersby early the next morning, prompting them to report the situation to the police.

The source added, “They drove the bus into the bush, pulled the people out, and called the driver’s family, asking for a ransom of N30 million for each of the passengers. They said they would call again, but they haven’t yet.”

The kidnappers abandoned some children on the bus, which eventually led to their discovery by locals who informed the police in Emure-Owo.

Meanwhile, the driver’s union in Ado-Ekiti has convened a meeting to discuss how to negotiate with the abductors.

Two of the kidnapped victims managed to escape while being forced into the bush.

Attempts to reach the Ekiti State Police Command for comment were unsuccessful, as calls to the Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, went unanswered.

Alleged Defamation: Dele Farotimi Speaks After Regaining Freedom

Human rights advocate, Dele Farotimi has been released from the correctional centre in Ekiti State after meeting the conditions set by the court.

Farotimi was freed on Tuesday morning.

Last Friday, a magistrate court in Ado-Ekiti granted him bail, which included a N30 million bond, two sureties (one of whom must be a property owner), the submission of his passport, and a restriction preventing him from granting media interviews after his release.

In a statement to the press following his release, Farotimi expressed that he had never lied about anyone in his life, stating that everything he said about individuals or institutions was the truth.

“It is not ever an easy journey when you are fighting evil, but some years back, before I started this work, God told me that the truth is enough. It is the only weapon with which you can slay the monster called Nigeria, which is the truth. In my war against the evil empire that we all lived in, I have never lied against anyone. If I don’t know, I will say I don’t know,” he said.

Farotimi’s arrest came after the release of his book Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System on July 2.

A few months later, prominent legal figure Afe Babalola accused him of defamation, leading to his arrest in a dramatic fashion at his Lagos office on December 3 by officers from the Ekiti State Police Command.

Farotimi was then transported to Ekiti.

Apart from the defamation charges filed by Babalola’s legal team at the Ekiti Magistrate Court, additional charges were brought by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on December 6 at the Ekiti Federal High Court.

Farotimi faced charges of defamation and cyberbullying following a petition by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Aare Afe Babalola, who claimed that Farotimi’s book defamed him.

The police alleged that the book accused Babalola and other SANs of corrupting Justices of the Supreme Court.
