Over 25 People Kidnapped By Gunmen In Kastina

Gunmen, believed to be terrorists, have abducted at least 25 people, mostly women and children, in Batsari Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The incident occurred late Sunday night in the Ajasa community, where several homes were also looted by the attackers.

A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, reported that the gunmen arrived in large numbers and fired indiscriminately into the air to announce their presence.

While no one was killed, the assailants took the 25 victims and transported them into the forest.

The resident also noted that the attackers faced no resistance as security forces did not arrive in the area until hours after the gunmen had left.

Concerns were raised about the well-being of the abducted individuals, particularly the children and infants, who would likely suffer in the cold harmattan conditions in the forest.

The gunmen have yet to make contact with the community regarding the victims, a pattern consistent with previous abductions in the region.

The source called for increased security in the area, as communities have been frequently targeted by such attacks.

He pointed out a similar incident that occurred just days earlier, when gunmen attacked a neighboring village, killing one person and injuring another during the day while farmers were harvesting crops.

The police spokesperson for the state, ASP Abubakar Aliyu, confirmed that inquiries would be made into the incident.

As at the time of this report, no further details have been released.

Pope Survives Two Assassination Attempts During Iraq Visit

Pope Francis narrowly escaped two assassination attempts during his historic visit to Iraq in March 2021, as revealed in excerpts from his upcoming autobiography, Hope, published on Tuesday by Italian media.

According to the pontiff, his security team was alerted to the threats by British intelligence services.

In his book, the Pope describes how a woman carrying explosives and a young suicide bomber were heading towards Mosul with the intent to detonate themselves during his visit.

Additionally, a van filled with explosives was reportedly speeding toward the same target. Both attackers were intercepted and killed by Iraqi police forces before they could carry out their plans.

Pope Francis, now 88, reflected on the risks of the trip, noting that many people had advised him against it.

However, he was determined to go ahead, feeling it was necessary to visit Iraq and “get to the bottom of things.”

The three-day visit, which took place amid heightened security and the Covid-19 pandemic, was the Pope’s first international trip in over a year.

Despite the dangers, he traveled extensively across Iraq, including to Baghdad and Mosul, once a stronghold of the Islamic State group.

During his travels, the Pope’s security was managed by the Pontifical Swiss Guard, the Vatican Gendarmerie, and local Iraqi authorities.

28% of Murders Go Unreported Due To Lack Of Police Action – Report

A significant portion of murder cases in Nigeria remains unreported, with over 28% of such incidents not being brought to the attention of the police, according to a recent report from the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The report, titled Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey 2024, was released on Tuesday and covers the period from March 2023 to April 2024.

The survey reveals that only 0.7% of the 614,937 murder cases in the country were reported to law enforcement, with many victims’ families opting to report the crime to other authorities or handle the matter privately.

The primary reason for this is a lack of confidence in the police, as many believe the authorities would not take adequate action.

Another 27.5% of cases went unreported because victims’ families lacked evidence to identify the perpetrators or feared that the police would not act on the information.

According to the report, 39.9% of murder cases were reported to other agencies, while 15.8% were not reported out of fear of retaliation from the perpetrators.

Notably, no cases were resolved by the families of the victims, the report states.

The survey also highlighted that the North-West region recorded the highest number of murders, with over 206,000 cases, while the South-West had the lowest at 15,693.

The NBS noted that, nationwide, more than 51.8 million crime incidents were reported by households during the period.

The North-West also experienced the highest number of overall crime incidents (14.4 million), followed by the North-Central (8.8 million), while the South-East reported the least (6.2 million).

Furthermore, the report indicated that rural areas had higher crime rates (26.5 million incidents) compared to urban areas (25.4 million incidents).

Just In: State Assembly Suspends All Local Government Chairmen

The Edo State House of Assembly has voted to suspend the chairmen and vice chairmen of all 18 local government areas in the state for a period of two months.

This decision, which was reached on Tuesday, also mandates the legislative leaders in each local government to assume control of their respective councils during the suspension.

The motion for the suspension was introduced by Mr. Isibor Adeh, the member representing Esan North East I, and was seconded by Mr. Donald Okogbe, the representative for Akoko-Edo Constituency II.

The suspension follows a petition submitted by Governor Monday Okpebholo to the Assembly, accusing the council chairmen and their deputies of refusing to provide financial records of their local governments to the state government.

The governor described this refusal as insubordination and gross misconduct, urging the Assembly to investigate the issue.

During the debate on the matter, 14 members of the Assembly supported the motion, while six opposed it. Three members abstained from voting.

The Speaker, Mr. Blessing Agbebaku, had previously instructed all members to express their views on the issue. Afterward, the Clerk of the House, Mr. Yahaya Omogbai, conducted a headcount to determine the number of members in favor or against the suspension.

Defence Chief Orders Investigation Into Deaths Of Okuama Leaders In Military Custody

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has mandated a comprehensive investigation into the deaths of two Okuama community leaders who allegedly died while in Army custody.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, made the announcement during the Strategic Communications Interagency Committee (SCIPC) end-of-year briefing in Abuja, organized by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

The deceased individuals, Pa James Oghoroko, the President General of Okuama Community, and Pa Denis Okugbaye, the community’s 81-year-old treasurer, reportedly died six days apart while detained by the military.

The two were among six individuals detained in August in connection with the deaths of 17 military personnel on March 14, during a peace mission to mediate a dispute between the Okuama and Okoloba communities.

In response to inquiries, Gusau confirmed that the CDS had instructed the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, based in Port Harcourt, to conduct a thorough investigation into the deaths and submit its findings by December 16.

In other news, the Nigerian Defence Headquarters has dismissed claims of the presence of any foreign military base in the country.

This comes in response to reports suggesting the establishment of a French military base in northeastern Nigeria. Major General Edward Buba, spokesman for the Defence Media Operations (DMO), refuted these reports, calling them “false, misleading, and the work of mischief-makers.”

The Defence Headquarters reiterated that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remains focused on fulfilling its constitutional duties and safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity, urging the public to disregard the rumors.

2025 Budget: FG To Borrow N13 Trillion To Cover Deficit, Says Edun

The Nigerian government will borrow to finance the N13 trillion deficit in the N48 trillion 2025 budget, according to Mr. Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy.

Edun made this statement on Monday after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Edun explained that the total projected revenue for 2025 is N34.82 trillion, while expenditure is projected to be N47.96 trillion, a 36.8% increase from the 2024 estimate.

This results in a projected deficit of N13.14 trillion, which amounts to 3.89% of Nigeria’s GDP.

The minister emphasized that the 2025 budget is designed in line with the progress made under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration over the past 18 months.

He noted that, like many governments worldwide, Nigeria is working to achieve fiscal sustainability by balancing revenue, expenditure, and borrowing to create an environment conducive to economic growth.

Edun also highlighted the importance of private sector investment in driving economic progress, job creation, and poverty reduction.

He pointed to recent investments by major international companies like Shell and Total, which have committed billions of dollars to Nigeria, as a sign of growing investor confidence.

The minister credited the Tinubu administration for its policy reforms, particularly the market-driven pricing of petroleum products, foreign exchange, and electricity.

He also pointed out that for the first time in 25 years, Nigeria has begun domestic refining of petrol, producing not just fuel but also raw materials for various industries.

Edun stated that these efforts are contributing to improved fiscal sustainability, with a focus on government spending in critical areas while fostering an environment for private sector growth.

The commissioner further appealed to parents and guardians to discourage children and wards from purchasing or using fireworks, stressing that anyone caught violating the ban will be held accountable under the law.

CAF Awards: Super Falcons Named Women’s National Team Of The Year

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have been awarded Women’s National Team of the Year at this year’s Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards, held in Marrakech, Morocco.

The Nigerian team clinched the prestigious title ahead of South Africa’s Banyana Banyana and Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses, who were also nominated for the honor.

Ibrahim Gusau, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), received the award on behalf of the team and dedicated it to Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, for her unwavering support of women’s football in the country.

The Super Falcons’ victory comes after a historic achievement: they secured qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics, marking their first appearance in the Games in 16 years.

However, despite their remarkable qualification, the team faced challenges in the Olympics, failing to progress past the group stage after losing all their matches.

This was in contrast to their strong performance in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where they reached the Round of 16 with impressive results.

In the men’s category, the Ivory Coast national football team, the Elephants, defeated Nigeria’s Super Eagles to claim the National Team of the Year award.

ADC Calls On President Tinubu To End “Irresponsible, Senseless Borrowing” Amid Economic Crisis

Chief Ralphs Nwosu, the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to halt what he termed the “senseless borrowing” that he believes has contributed to Nigeria’s economic difficulties.

Speaking during the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, Nwosu criticized the Federal Government’s escalating borrowing habits and its ineffective economic policies, which he said have worsened the nation’s financial instability.

He called for an immediate overhaul of the government’s fiscal approach.

In addition to addressing national economic issues, Nwosu revealed that the ADC was taking steps to address a common problem in Nigerian politics: politicians using the party as a springboard for electoral success, only to abandon it once they assume office.

Nwosu also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its support of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms in resolving electoral conflicts.

He highlighted the ADC’s use of ADR to settle internal disputes and promote unity within the party.

“The ADC has successfully resolved internal disputes and fostered unity through the INEC-backed ADR process. This underscores our commitment to internal democracy and inclusiveness,” Nwosu stated.

Reflecting on the party’s journey since its formation in 2006, Nwosu expressed the ADC’s ambition to become a dominant political force by 2027.

He emphasized the importance of building stronger alliances, citing the ongoing partnership with the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), and called on party members to work together with renewed unity and focus.

“After 20 years, it’s time to get things right. If I have wronged anyone, now is the time for reconciliation. By 2025, the ADC will be the leading party in Nigeria,” he said.

Nwosu also addressed the challenges the party faced following a factional split after its 2023 presidential candidate.

As part of efforts to heal the rift, Nwosu announced that bans placed on certain members would be lifted, signaling a new beginning for the ADC.

He further emphasized the need for the ADC to build strong, enduring institutions and urged members to strive for greater success.

“Why do we only elect a few to public office? Why can’t we dominate the legislative houses?” he asked.

Looking ahead, Nwosu expressed optimism about the party’s reforms, confident that the ADC would soon emerge as the party of choice for Nigerians.

The NEC meeting, held during the festive Christmas season, was described by Nwosu as a symbolic “new beginning” for the party, reinforcing its commitment to unity, love, and progress.
