Court Adjourns Corruption Case Against Ganduje, Wife, Warns Lawyers Against Gutter Language

The Kano State High Court, under Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu, has postponed the bribery and corruption case against former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, his wife Prof. Hafsat Ganduje, and six others, to January 13, 2025.

The court will address all outstanding preliminary objections at that time.

During Wednesday’s proceedings, the judge urged all lawyers to maintain professionalism and avoid using “street language” in their arguments, whether in civil or criminal cases.

The remark followed a disagreement in which M.N. Duru (SAN), representing the 3rd defendant, Abubakar Bawuro, objected to prosecution counsel Adeola Adedipe’s (SAN) statement suggesting that the defense was intentionally delaying the case.

Duru called on Adedipe to be more careful with his language, as a respected member of the legal profession. Sanusi Musa (SAN), representing the 5th defendant, Jibrilla Muhammad, supported Duru’s request.

Justice Aliyu reminded all counsel of their duty to uphold justice and professionalism. Adedipe later apologized for his comments and requested a brief adjournment.

He also filed an application to withdraw a counter-affidavit dated October 18, 2024.

The case, brought by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC), involves serious allegations of corruption, bribery, and the misappropriation of billions of naira in public funds.

The accused include Ganduje, his wife, their son Umar Abdullahi Ganduje (Abba), and several companies.

Reps Pass Bill Requiring Mandatory Counselling, Training For Corruption Convicts

The House of Representatives has passed for a second reading a bill aimed at amending the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000, to introduce mandatory counselling and training for individuals convicted of corruption-related offenses.

The bill, sponsored by Hon. Kayode Akiolu, representing Lagos Island II Federal Constituency, seeks to amend Section 67 of the Act by adding three new provisions.

These provisions mandate that judges and magistrates, in addition to sentencing convicts to imprisonment or fines, will require them to undergo a specified period of counselling and training.

Explaining the bill, Hon. Akiolu noted that the mandatory training and counselling would be developed and delivered by the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria.

The program, which would last for at least four weeks, aims to address the psychological factors behind corrupt behavior.

Akiolu likened the effort to treating kleptomania, an impulse control disorder, by helping convicts reform and potentially become advocates against corruption.

The bill also proposes that convicts may be asked to cover the cost of their counselling and training, ensuring that there is no additional financial burden on the government.

Akiolu argued that this initiative would align with the criminal justice system’s rehabilitative goals, focusing on reforming offenders rather than just punishing them.

He urged his colleagues to support the bill, emphasizing that it would significantly strengthen Nigeria’s ongoing fight against corruption.

“This bill will foster a culture of accountability and help reduce corrupt tendencies,” he stated.

Operation Udoka, the Joint Task Force (JTF) in the South East, has taken strong action to address misconduct and illegal activities in the region.

Over the past six months, the operation has sanctioned 316 soldiers and 371 civilians for extortion and other offenses, including detaining 67 soldiers and two civilians.

In addition, 46 soldiers were demoted for misconduct.

Major General Hassan Dada, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division and Commander of Operation Udoka, made the announcement during a briefing in Enugu.

He emphasized the task force’s commitment to restoring its integrity and maintaining public trust, highlighting efforts under “Operation Checkmate” to discipline erring personnel involved in extortion at checkpoints.

The JTF has also made significant strides in curbing illegal oil bunkering and refining activities across Abia, Imo, and Anambra states. Key achievements include:

78 anti-illegal bunkering operations

Arrest of over 60 suspected oil thieves

Destruction of 217 illegal refinery sites

Seizure of 993,000 liters of stolen crude oil and 237,000 liters of illegally refined diesel (AGO)

Recovery of 117 pumping machines, 98 wheelbarrows, and 21 kilometers of siphoning hoses

The operation’s most significant campaign, “Operation Dragon Spit,” took place from late June to early July and resulted in a major disruption of illegal bunkering activities.

Key locations targeted included Ukwa West LGA and Owaza (Abia), Egbema in Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta LGAs (Imo), and Ugwo and Ikpele in Ogbaru LGA (Anambra).

Maj. Gen. Dada acknowledged challenges but reaffirmed the JTF’s commitment to combating oil theft, terrorism, secessionist activities, and criminal gangs in the region.

He highlighted plans to strengthen the force’s capabilities through additional training and equipment, and reiterated the importance of cooperation with other security agencies and local leaders to ensure a safer environment for citizens.

“We will continue to intensify operations to safeguard the region and ensure the safety of its people,” Maj. Gen. Dada concluded.

Man Jailed 10 Years For Grabbing Minor’s Breasts In Lagos

A Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Ikeja, on Wednesday, convicted and sentenced a man, Bamidele Folorunsho, to 10 years imprisonment for indecent treatment and sexual assault of a minor by rubbing her anus and caressing her breasts with his hands.

Justice Rahman Oshodi who handed down the verdict convicted Folorunsho of two amended counts preferred against him by the Lagos State Government.

The convict who was initially charged with the offence of defilement of a 12-year-old girl, in February 2018, was arraigned in October 2021, and he pleaded not guilty to the charge against him.

However, when the case came up on Wednesday, the state’s prosecution counsel, O. Aluko, told the court that the convict had opted for a plea bargain.

Folorunsho was then re-arraigned on two amended counts bordering on indecent treatment by rubbing the victim’s anus with his hands and sexual assault by fondling her breasts with his hands.

The prosecutor, Aluko, informed the court that both parties had entered a plea and sentence agreement dated December 12, 2024.

Aluko informed the court that a sentence of 10 years imprisonment was approved by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Dr Babajide Martins.

“My Lord, the prosecution did not call any witnesses before Folorunsho accepted the plea bargain agreement and he was remanded on March 22, 2018,” she said.

Aluko said the plea bargain required filing an amended charge.

The judge asked Folorunsho whether he understood the contents of his guilty plea and the obligation of the court to give out the maximum sentences on the charges.

Folorunsho admitted that he made the plea bargain voluntarily and under caution and that he was satisfied by the advice of his counsel.

The defence counsel, M.I Alagbala, said: “We apply for a plea bargain for Folorunsho, we beg the court to grant the plea bargain.”

The amended charge was then read to him and he pleaded guilty.

The prosecution said the offences committed by the convict contravened Sections 135 and 263 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

Justice Oshodi sentenced the convict to 10 years imprisonment having found him guilty of the offences.

“I have found you guilty based on your plea in the amended information dated December 11, 2024. I have carefully considered the plea bargain agreement and your show of remorse.

“I sentence you to 10 years imprisonment which will commence from March 22, 2018, and your name should be registered as a sex offender,” Oshodi ruled.

Court Orders Halt On Sale, Publication Of Farotimi’s Book Over Alleged Defamation

An Oyo State High Court, presided over by Justice M. A. Adegbola, has granted an interim order restraining human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, and his publishers from further publishing or selling his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.

The book is alleged to contain defamatory content against Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), the founder of Afe Babalola University in Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD).

The court order, issued on Wednesday, also applies to the book’s re-publishers, including major bookstores such as Amazon, Rovingheights, Booksellers, Jazzhole, Glendora, Quintessence, and Patabah Books Limited.

These outlets are now prohibited from selling the book, whether in physical or digital form, through any mainstream or social media platform, pending the resolution of the case.

The lawsuit, filed by Adebayo Adenipekun (SAN) on behalf of Afe Babalola, accuses Farotimi of publishing libelous material.

Farotimi was arrested in Lagos last week by the police on charges of cyber-bullying filed against him by the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The court adjourned the motion for an interlocutory injunction until January 7, 2025.

The order will remain in effect until the matter is fully heard and determined.

Macron Faces Pressure To Appoint New Prime Minister

French President Emmanuel Macron is racing against time to meet a self-imposed 48-hour deadline to appoint a new prime minister following the historic no-confidence vote that ousted Michel Barnier’s government last week.

Macron, aiming to avoid a prolonged political crisis, convened party leaders on Tuesday to discuss forming a “government of national interest,” though far-right and hard-left leaders, who played a key role in Barnier’s removal, were excluded from the talks.

Macron is under immense pressure to form a broad alliance that can survive a no-confidence vote and ensure the passage of the national budget for the coming year.

With his trip to Poland scheduled for Thursday, Macron hopes to announce the new prime minister as early as Wednesday evening, according to sources close to the president.

The president is attempting to lure the Socialists, Greens, and Communists away from their alliance with the hard-left France Unbowed (LFI), but those parties have expressed a preference for appointing a prime minister from their own ranks.

Centrist ally François Bayrou, a former justice minister, is considered a leading contender, though Socialist leader Olivier Faure has opposed Bayrou’s candidacy, arguing that a left-wing prime minister is needed.

Other potential candidates include former foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and current Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu, although Le Drian initially rejected the offer.

Maud Bregeon, spokeswoman for the caretaker government, mentioned the possibility of a non-aggression pact where parties would agree not to bring down the government in exchange for a prime minister from the left.

Macron also thanked the outgoing government, acknowledging the “serious choice” made by last week’s no-confidence vote and its lasting consequences.

On Wednesday, the government presented a special budget draft law to ensure the functioning of the state into the new year, with most parties expected to support the legislation for stability’s sake.

Meanwhile, far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who played a pivotal role in ousting Barnier’s government, said she was “not unhappy” to have been excluded from the talks. Recent polling indicates Le Pen would be a strong contender in the 2027 presidential race, though her ongoing embezzlement trial could affect her candidacy.

Blame Buhari For ‘Yorubanisation’ Of Tinubu’s Govt – Ozekhome Tells Nigerians

Rights activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mike Ozekhome, has stated that former President Muhammadu Buhari should be held accountable for the apparent preference of his successor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to appoint individuals from the Yoruba ethnic group into prominent government positions.

Speaking at a symposium on human rights in Abuja, Ozekhome argued that the ethnic polarization of Nigeria during Buhari’s administration set a precedent that is now being followed by President Tinubu.

Ozekhome criticized Buhari’s eight-year tenure, accusing the former president of favoring northerners and Muslims in key positions, which he described as “northernisation” of Nigeria.

He pointed out that while some northerners now complain about Tinubu’s appointments, they had been silent when Buhari’s administration predominantly favored people from the north.

“I cried, I wrote articles, and even authored a book titled ‘How Buhari Mismanaged Nigeria.’ Despite the evident marginalization of other regions, many supported Buhari simply because he was from their region, neglecting the broader implications for national unity,” Ozekhome remarked.

At the event, themed “Unity in Diversity: Embracing Freedom, Equality, and Dignity for All,” Ozekhome warned those in power not to exploit ethnic and sectional divides for political gain, stressing the need for true national unity.

He also criticized Nigeria’s 1999 constitution, calling for a new constitution that reflects the diverse views of Nigerians from all ethnic and religious backgrounds.

Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah, the IHRC’s Ambassador-at-Large and Head of Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria, spoke on the theme of the symposium, highlighting the importance of embracing Nigeria’s diversity to foster unity.

He acknowledged the challenges posed by ethnic and religious tensions but emphasized that Nigeria’s multicultural composition holds immense potential for promoting national cooperation.

The event also marked the official appointment of new officials for the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) in Nigeria.

Tinubu Assures German President of ECOWAS’ Commitment To Reintegrating Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso

President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday in Abuja, emphasized that the interests and welfare of the citizens of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger remain a priority for the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

During a meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu, who also chairs ECOWAS, assured that the regional body would prioritize diplomacy and wisdom in efforts to reintegrate the three countries into the ECOWAS fold.

Tinubu noted that the leadership of the three countries had been reluctant to present clear transition plans with definitive timelines.

Despite this, he stressed that ECOWAS would continue to lead by example, insisting on democratic processes while ensuring that innocent citizens, who are often the victims of military leadership, are not penalized.

He reaffirmed that ECOWAS would maintain free movement and trade, even if the transition to democracy remained uncertain.

He assured the German president that ECOWAS’ doors would remain open for the return of democracy in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. “We are mindful of the wellbeing of the citizens,” Tinubu said.

“ECOWAS will stand for collaboration and will not tolerate unconstitutional governments.”

German President Steinmeier, in his response, acknowledged the significant impact the reintegration of the three countries would have on both the economy and security of the West African region.

He praised ECOWAS’ diplomatic efforts and urged Tinubu to continue using diplomacy to address the challenges, while preparing emergency plans for future economic cooperation.

Steinmeier also emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and the need for a united approach to the security and stability of West Africa.

Court Jails Man For Defrauding American Of $115,000 In Fake Crypto Scheme, Orders Restitution To Victim

A Nigerian man, Praise Humphrey Igbo, has been sentenced to one year in prison by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Jabi, Abuja, for defrauding an American citizen of $115,000 in a fake cryptocurrency investment scheme.

Igbo, who was also known by the alias Jessica Allen, was convicted on December 11, 2024, by Justice H.L. Abba-Aliyu after pleading guilty to charges of internet fraud and criminal impersonation.

Igbo was accused of pretending to be a successful cryptocurrency investor, “Jessica Allen,” and deceiving Aaron Bakker, an American from East Baton Rouge Parish, into transferring $115,000 worth of Bitcoin.

The funds were obtained through fraudulent means on Blockchain.com after Igbo presented a false investment opportunity.

The charge against Igbo stated that he had defrauded Bakker of 5.26 Bitcoins, valued at $115,000, by posing as a legitimate cryptocurrency trader.

He was charged under Section 321 of the Penal Code Act Abuja and faced a penalty under Section 324 of the same law.

Following his guilty plea, the prosecution, led by M.K. Hussain, requested a conviction and appropriate sentencing.

In addition to the one-year prison term, Igbo was given the option to pay a fine of one million naira (N1,000,000).

The court also ruled that cryptocurrency assets worth $16,110 and $67,487.79, as well as the funds from his bank account, be used to compensate the victim, Aaron Bakker, through the American Embassy.
