Court Upholds Sotayo As National President Of Motorcyclists Union

An Abuja Magistrate Court has reaffirmed Razak Olusola Sotayo as the legitimate National President of the Motorcycle Operators Union of Nigeria (MOUN).

The ruling came after Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna determined that the court lacked jurisdiction over a case filed by Bobi Julius and nine others, who sought an injunction to remove Sotayo from office.

The court clarified that the dispute was an internal union matter, falling outside its scope, and emphasized that the challenge against Sotayo’s position had no merit.

The case, filed by Julius Bobi, was dismissed, with the Magistrate noting that it could not overrule the decision made by the union’s members.

In his response, the defendant’s lawyer, Mohammed Adamu, hailed the court’s decision, stating that the case was struck out due to its lack of substance, reinforcing the court as a pillar of justice for the common man.

Following the ruling, Sotayo expressed gratitude to his supporters for their unwavering loyalty and extended an olive branch to those who opposed his leadership.

He reassured members that MOUN, which represents all commercial motorcycle operators in Nigeria, is committed to fostering unity and combating the actions of bad actors within the industry.

Okpebholo Not Familiar With Figures, He Has Never Embezzled Public Funds – APC Reacts To Edo Governor’s Budget Amount Gaffe

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Jarrett Tenebe, has come to the defense of Governor Monday Okpebholo following criticism over a mistake made during the presentation of the state’s budget estimate at the House of Assembly.

Tenebe, in a video posted on social media, stated, “No one is above mistake,” in response to the backlash that ensued after the governor’s gaffe on Tuesday.

Tenebe explained that even prominent world leaders, such as former South African president Jacob Zuma, had faced challenges with reading large figures.

He further added, “Governor Okpebholo was not familiar with figures because he has never embezzled public funds.”

The controversy arose when Governor Okpebholo struggled to read out the total amount of the state’s budget during his address at the State House of Assembly.

The budget, totaling N605.7 billion, was presented only in figures, making it difficult for the governor to pronounce the sum correctly.

After several unsuccessful attempts, the governor remarked, “Sorry, it’s confusing me,” prompting laughter from the Assembly.

Following the governor’s comment, Speaker of the House, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, intervened by calling for order and then asked the governor to come forward and officially submit the budget estimate to the Assembly.

The incident quickly became a topic of discussion on social media, with many users offering various opinions on the matter.

The budget includes N611.7 billion (82%) for capital expenditures and N138.6 billion (18%) for recurrent expenditures, marking a 30% increase from the previous year’s budget of N523 billion.

Presenting the budget, dubbed the “Budget of Sustained Momentum,” Governor Otti acknowledged the challenges posed by inflation and exchange rate instability but reaffirmed his government’s commitment to delivering on its promises.

He highlighted achievements from the 2024 fiscal year and outlined plans for further progress in 2025.

Key allocations include N13 billion for establishing agro-industrial processing zones in Bende, Ukwa, and Umunneochi local governments, and N55 billion for ongoing and new road projects across all 17 local government areas, including the construction of 170 kilometers of rural roads.

Additionally, N4 billion is set aside for the revamping of the Umuahia Regional Water Scheme’s 47km pipeline.

The health and education sectors will receive a combined 35% of the budget, with 15% allocated to health and 20% to education.

He emphasized that any future borrowing would be strictly for project financing and would not be used for recurrent expenditure.

In his response, Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, praised the governor’s budget presentation, stating that it would continue to drive infrastructure development in the state.

He also expressed the Assembly’s full support for the 2025 budget’s implementation.

Syrian Fighters Appoint Interim Prime Minister As Israel Launches Multiple Airstrikes

Syrian opposition fighters have appointed Mohammed al-Bashir as the caretaker prime minister of a transitional government, following the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad.

Al-Bashir, who previously led the Syrian Salvation Government (SSG) in rebel-held Idlib province, will serve in the role until March 2025.

In a televised statement, he confirmed that a cabinet meeting had been held to transfer government responsibilities from the ousted regime to the new caretaker administration.

Al-Bashir’s leadership comes after a rapid offensive by opposition forces that resulted in the fall of Damascus, ending over 50 years of Assad family rule.

His ties to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the group that spearheaded the regime’s downfall, are well-established, as he headed the SSG, which governed Idlib since 2017.

The SSG, which provides essential services in rebel-controlled areas, is now expanding its operations to Aleppo, the first major city to be captured during the recent offensive.

In the meantime, Israel has intensified its military operations in Syria.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that Israeli forces targeted Syrian naval vessels in overnight airstrikes, part of a broader strategy to destroy Syrian military capabilities that pose a threat to Israel.

The Israeli military has conducted over 300 airstrikes in Syria since the fall of Assad’s regime, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Israel’s actions have sparked criticism from multiple countries.

Qatar condemned Israel’s violations of Syria’s sovereignty, while Turkey accused Israel of displaying an “occupying mentality.”

Palestinian militant group Hamas also condemned the strikes, calling them “barbaric” and urging the international community to hold Israel accountable.

Hamas accused Israel of imposing its actions on the entire region through these strikes.

Over 127 Killed In Sudan Bombardments As War Intensifies

At least 127 people, primarily civilians, were killed in Sudan on Monday and Tuesday as the army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched intense airstrikes, barrel bombings, and artillery fire on densely populated areas.

Rights groups reported the deaths amid the ongoing 20-month conflict, which has shown no signs of de-escalation despite failed ceasefire efforts.

On Monday, more than eight barrel bombs struck a market in Kabkabiya, North Darfur, leaving over 100 people dead, according to the Al-Fashir Resistance Committee.

Emergency Lawyers, a human rights organization, confirmed the death toll and hundreds of injuries.

The army, however, denied responsibility for the attack, justifying its airstrikes as targeting RSF military positions.

The following day, the RSF shelled an army-controlled area in Omdurman, Khartoum state, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 people, including 14 bus passengers.

State authorities reported a total of 65 casualties, with many injured victims transferred to Al-Naw Hospital.

The conflict has displaced millions of Sudanese, with famine declared at the Zamzam camp in North Darfur.

Shelling in the area on Tuesday killed seven people, according to Adam Rojal from the Coordinating Committee for Displaced People.

France Begins Military Withdrawal From Chad

France has begun the process of withdrawing its military forces from Chad, with the departure of two Mirage fighter jets from the capital, N’Djamena, the French military announced.

This move follows Chad’s decision, announced two weeks ago, to end its defense cooperation agreement with France.

On November 28, Chad surprised many by terminating the longstanding defense pact, which had allowed French troops to operate in the country as part of efforts to combat Islamist militant groups in the Sahel region.

While the specifics of the withdrawal, including whether any French troops will remain in Chad, have yet to be finalized, the French military confirmed that the first two Mirage jets had returned to their home base in eastern France.

Army spokesperson Colonel Guillaume Vernet stated that the departure of these jets represents the initial phase of withdrawing French military equipment stationed in N’Djamena.
