He highlighted the committee’s recommendation to establish a Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, which would oversee the implementation of reforms in the sector.

Former CJN, Onnoghen, FG Agree To Settle Out-of-Court

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has granted approval for an out-of-court settlement between the federal government and former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, over his removal from office.

The decision was reached during Thursday’s proceedings, where both parties informed the court of their ongoing efforts to resolve the dispute amicably.

Justice Onnoghen was removed as the CJN in 2019 by then-President Muhammadu Buhari, following charges brought against him at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) for false asset declaration.

Advertorial

At Thursday’s hearing, Onnoghen’s lead counsel, Dr. Ogwu Onoja, informed the three-man panel of justices that discussions between the parties were ongoing, with recent engagements occurring as recently as Wednesday, September 18.

He expressed optimism that a peaceful resolution would be achieved and requested a one-month adjournment to finalize the settlement.

Counsel for the federal government, Tijani Gazali, confirmed the efforts towards an amicable settlement and supported the request for an adjournment.

Advertorial

Gazali emphasized that both parties were committed to settling the matter outside the courtroom.

Justice J.O. Oyewole, who presided over the session, instructed the parties to document and file the terms of their settlement once an agreement is reached.

The court will then adopt the settlement as its final judgement in the case.

Justice Oyewole set November 4 as the next hearing date to allow time for the conclusion of the negotiations.

Advertorial

Onnoghen was initially prosecuted by the federal government in 2019 for failing to declare several assets, leading to his conviction by the CCT.

He was removed from office and ordered to forfeit the undeclared assets to the government.

In the current appeal, Onnoghen is seeking to overturn the CCT’s judgement, which led to his removal and the forfeiture of his bank accounts.

He was not present at the Thursday proceedings.

NECO’s Registrar, Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, made the announcement during a press briefing at the council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State.

He revealed that a total of 1,376,423 candidates registered for the examination, comprising 706,950 males and 669,473 females.

Advertorial

Out of these, 1,367,736 candidates sat for the exams, with 702,112 being male and 665,624 female.

“Of those who sat for the exam, 828,284 candidates, or 60.55%, achieved five credits or more, including English and Mathematics. Meanwhile, 1,147,597 candidates, representing 83.90%, obtained five credits or more regardless of English and Mathematics,” Wushishi explained.

He noted a significant drop in examination malpractice, with 8,437 cases recorded in 2024 compared to 12,030 cases in 2023, reflecting a 30.1% decrease.

Advertorial

Despite this improvement, 40 schools across 17 states were found to be involved in mass cheating.

NECO plans to summon these schools for discussions and apply appropriate sanctions.

One school in Ekiti State has already been recommended for de-recognition for mass cheating in two core subjects and one science subject.

Additionally, 21 supervisors across 12 states were recommended for blacklisting due to poor supervision, aiding malpractice, absconding from duty, extortion, negligence, and other unprofessional behavior.

Wushishi encouraged candidates to access their results through the NECO website using their examination registration numbers.

“I hereby declare the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) Internal results officially released. Candidates can now access their results on the NECO website at www.neco.gov.ng,” he said.

INEC Receives Multiple Requests Nationwide To Recall Lawmakers

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has received several petitions from groups across Nigeria, requesting the recall of their federal and state lawmakers.

This comes as INEC also unveiled revised Regulations and Guidelines for recalling lawmakers, including councillors in the Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, shared this update in a statement following a management meeting on Thursday.

Advertorial

He emphasized that some groups had even asked INEC to initiate the recall process on their behalf.

Olumekun clarified that the recall process is initiated by voters in a constituency, not the commission.

INEC’s role is to implement the process in accordance with constitutional and legal provisions, as outlined in Sections 69, 110, and 160 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), and Sections 2(c) and 113 of the Electoral Act, 2022.

Advertorial

INEC has published a detailed 10-page document on its website and social media platforms to guide constituents on the recall process.

Olumekun encouraged voters interested in recalling their representatives to follow the steps outlined in the revised regulations before submitting petitions to the commission.

Edo Guber: PDP, LP, APC Candidates Gear Up For Battle To Succeed Obaseki

The race to succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki in Edo State has drawn significant attention as three main candidates vie for the top position: Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP).

While 18 political parties are technically in the contest, only these three candidates are considered serious contenders.

The political atmosphere is charged, with the legacies of past administrations and local issues, such as infrastructure and public welfare, playing a significant role in shaping voter opinions.

Advertorial

Asue Ighodalo, a lawyer and financial expert, is not a traditional politician but has been closely aligned with Obaseki’s administration, similar to how Obaseki was linked with former Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

On the other hand, Monday Okpebholo, an experienced grassroots politician, is seen as a strong force within his party, APC, and is particularly popular in the state’s Central District, which he currently represents in the Senate.

Olumide Akpata, former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, brings the influence of his illustrious family and his personal legal credentials to the race.

Advertorial

However, he faces challenges due to the relative weakness of his Labour Party platform, despite his popularity among youth voters.

The upcoming election is also seen as a rematch of sorts between two powerful figures, Oshiomhole and Obaseki, who have been at odds since the latter defected to the PDP and retained power in 2020.

The election has also sparked debate over security concerns, with both major parties expressing doubts about the neutrality of local security forces.

Advertorial

The language used by the candidates—whether corporate and technocratic from Ighodalo or grassroots-focused from Okpebholo—has also been a point of discussion among analysts. Despite this, vote-buying is not expected to be a decisive factor.

Edo Gov’ship: Former Deputy Speaker Quits PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Owan, Edo State, has suffered a significant setback with the defection of three-term member and former Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Omon Ezomon.

Ezomon, who represented Owan West Constituency from 1999 to 2007, cited internal discord and marginalization within the PDP as his reason for leaving the party.

In a formal letter dated September 16, 2024, addressed to the PDP Ward 5 Chairman in Avbiosi, Iuleha, Owan West Local Government Area, Ezomon announced his resignation, which he said was effective immediately.

Advertorial

The former lawmaker expressed disappointment over being sidelined from key decision-making processes at the ward, local government, and state levels, despite his long-standing contributions to the PDP.

Ezomon, who rose to prominence within the party and served as Deputy Speaker during his tenure in the House of Assembly, lamented the loss of influence he has faced in recent years.

He pointed to the growing control of “newcomers” in the party, which he believes has undermined his political legacy and diminished his role within the PDP.

Advertorial

Reflecting on his decision to leave the PDP, Ezomon underscored the persistent internal strife and unresolved conflicts that have weakened the party’s structure, particularly ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial elections.

He criticized the party’s leadership for failing to foster unity, warning that this disunity could have negative consequences for the PDP’s electoral chances.

In his resignation letter, Ezomon expressed sadness over the current state of the party, noting that ongoing factionalism had made it impossible for him to continue with the PDP.

Advertorial

“For my peace of Mind and wellbeing, I have chosen to walk away,” Ezomon stated, adding that his departure was the result of “considerable reflection” and consultations with his supporters.

While Ezomon expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities it provided him over the years, he left the door open for future political moves, with speculation already growing about a potential realignment with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Advertorial

Ezomon’s exit is expected to further weaken the PDP’s influence in Owan, where the Speaker of the State Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, continues to exert influence.

Enugu LG Poll: LP Raises Concerns Over Electoral Integrity In Oji-River LGA Ahead Of Elections

In the lead-up to the September 21st, 2024, local government elections in Enugu State, the Labour Party (LP) in Oji-River Local Government Area (LGA) has expressed gratitude to the Enugu State Government for its efforts in ensuring a free and fair electoral process but also raised serious concerns regarding potential malpractice.

Advertorial

In a press statement signed by the Chairman of the Labour Party in Oji-River, Dr. McGinger Nonso Ibeneme, the party commended Governor Peter Mbah for the signing of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) Bill and the funding of the electoral process.

These actions, they noted, reflect a strong commitment to democracy and electoral transparency.

Advertorial

However, Dr. Ibeneme raised concerns regarding the political affiliations of the Returning Officer and the Electoral Officer appointed for Oji-River LGA.

The Labour Party claimed that these officers are card-carrying members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which could compromise their impartiality in the election.

While acknowledging this concern, the Labour Party expressed optimism that the officers would carry out their duties with integrity, in line with the ENSIEC law.

Advertorial

More troubling for the Labour Party are allegations of a plot by certain PDP members to undermine the election.

According to the statement, these individuals are reportedly planning to hijack sensitive electoral materials and ensure that the official result sheets are not distributed to all 20 Wards and 175 Polling Units in the LGA.

Dr. Ibeneme called on ENSIEC to address these concerns and ensure transparency in the distribution of electoral materials.

Advertorial

Additionally, the Labour Party raised an issue regarding the relocation of a polling unit named Cattle Market Nomadic School II (14-14-05-011), located in Ugwuoba Ward I. The party claimed that this polling unit was unlawfully moved to a private property during the last general election.

The party has petitioned ENSIEC to restore the polling unit to its original location at the Cattle Market to avoid any legal infractions.

In light of these concerns, the Labour Party emphasized the need for vigilance and called on ENSIEC to ensure the proper deployment of election materials.

Party agents, the statement said, will carefully audit the election materials at various locations to prevent irregularities.

Dr. Ibeneme also appealed to security agencies, including the Nigerian Police Force, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Nigerian Army in Oji-River, to act professionally and ensure that the election is peaceful and transparent.

The Labour Party reaffirmed its commitment to upholding electoral rules and called for a free, fair, and credible election that reflects the will of the people of Oji-River.

Land Dispute: Enugu Community Backs Prof. Nnaji, Cites Court Rulings In Defense Against Grabbing Claims By Ezza Group

The Onuogba community in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State has refuted allegations that former Minister of Power, Prof. Bart Nnaji, is involved in land grabbing in their territory.

The accusations surfaced last weekend when protesters from the Ezza-Nkomoro group claimed that the chairman of Geometric Power, Prof. Nnaji, was attempting to forcibly seize land in Onuogba-Nike, near the Enugu-Abakaliki highway.

Advertorial

However, the Onuogba community has rejected these claims, calling them baseless and misleading.

During a press briefing, Chief Emmanuel Ubosi, the former President-General of Onuogba-Nike, clarified that the Ezza-Nkomoro people, who are accusing Prof. Nnaji, are actually settlers in the area.

According to him, the Ezza-Nkomoro group originally migrated from Ezza-Agu in Ebonyi State and were granted permission by the Onuogba community in 1956 to settle on a designated portion of land.

Advertorial

Ubosi explained that the Ezza-Nkomoro people were given over 62 hectares of land for their settlement, but over time they began to encroach on other lands not allocated to them.

He emphasized that the land in question, which Prof. Nnaji is being accused of grabbing, is not part of the land given to the Ezza-Nkomoro people but lies in the Idume area, which has no connection to the disputed claims.

Advertorial

According to Ubosi, Prof. Nnaji legally acquired the land in 1978 from the original owners, the Alinta family, and has since used it for agricultural purposes, cultivating citrus and pineapples.

He further stated that the ownership of the land had been contested by the Ezza-Nkomoro group as far back as 1974, but the Onuogba community had obtained a favorable court ruling in 2004.

The case was appealed by the Ezza-Nkomoro people but was once again decided in favor of the Onuogba community in 2016.

Advertorial

Chief Ubosi presented maps and court documents to support his claims, urging the government to intervene and prevent further encroachment by the Ezza-Nkomoro group on land that rightfully belongs to the Onuogba community and has been sold to Prof. Bart Nnaji.

Prof. Nnaji’s legal counsel, Barr. Benjamin Nwobodo, also weighed in, explaining that the Ezza-Nkomoro group had failed to provide any documentation to challenge the ownership of the land by the Alinta family, from whom Nnaji purchased the property.

Nwobodo clarified that Prof. Bart Nnaji acquired the land lawfully and has made efforts to engage in negotiations with affected individuals, disproving any claims of land grabbing.

According to Nwobodo, the legal battle over the land ended in 2013 when the court affirmed Alinta’s ownership, leading to the land being transferred to Prof. Nnaji.

He emphasized that the structures demolished on the land were not owned by the Ezza-Nkomoro people and urged the community to accept the court’s rulings.

Nwobodo concluded by affirming that Prof. Nnaji’s acquisition of the land is legitimate and that the accusations of land grabbing are unfounded.

Despite the Ezza-Nkomoro group’s protests, all legal decisions have favored Prof. Nnaji and the Onuogba community.

LP: Those Who Begged Us for Tickets Are Now Fighting Us – Abure

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has expressed frustration over the actions of some leaders who joined the party ahead of the 2023 general election and are now at odds with its leadership.

The faction specifically called out former presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti for their roles in the party’s internal crisis.

Following a stakeholders’ meeting organized by Otti, former Finance Minister Nenadi Usman was appointed to lead a caretaker committee for the party.

Advertorial

Obi and his running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, were also present at the meeting, signaling a shift in support away from Abure’s leadership.

In a statement issued by Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the Abure camp expressed dismay at the situation, recalling how the party made significant sacrifices to accommodate some of these leaders when they were denied tickets in their former political parties.

Ifoh lamented that many of these individuals are now seeking to remove Abure, despite benefiting from the party’s support during the last election.

Advertorial

The Abure faction also criticized the actions of Obi and Otti, accusing them of betrayal during a difficult time for the party. Ifoh emphasized the Labour Party’s commitment to both leaders during the 2023 election, stating that the party fought hard to support their candidacies, even in the face of judicial and political challenges.

In response to a lawsuit filed by the party, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) claimed in a counter-affidavit that it no longer recognizes the Abure-led leadership due to the expiration of Abure’s tenure.

Advertorial

The commission also dismissed the validity of the Labour Party’s March 2024 National Convention, which re-elected Abure as chairman.

However, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed defended the decision to replace Abure, insisting that his removal was in accordance with the party’s constitution, as his tenure had expired.

Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the National Caretaker Committee in Abuja, Baba-Ahmed urged Abure and his supporters to drop their opposition and work with the caretaker committee to rebuild the party ahead of future elections.

Advertorial

Baba-Ahmed also reassured party members that there is no internal crisis within the LP and expressed confidence in the party’s prospects for the 2027 presidential election and increased representation in the National Assembly.
