Confusion As Rep Members Exchange Blows Over Controversial Tax Reform Bills

A heated altercation erupted in Nigeria’s House of Representatives over the controversial tax reform bills initiated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, after House spokesperson Akintunde Rotimi Jr. publicly expressed his support for the bills.

Rotimi Jr., representing Ekiti North 1 (Ikole/Oye) constituency, sparked the tension when he revealed that the Ekiti State caucus in the National Assembly had unanimously endorsed the tax reform bills.

While presenting a report on a bill from the Committee on Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring, he stated, “I am from Ekiti State, the very first state in the National Assembly caucus to unanimously endorse the tax bill.”

This statement quickly provoked strong reactions from members, particularly those from the northern region of Nigeria, leading to a disruption of proceedings for over five minutes as they shouted in opposition.

Speaker Tajudeen Abass intervened, urging lawmakers to calm down and pointing out that Rotimi Jr. was merely expressing a personal opinion on the matter.

Despite the intervention, Rotimi Jr. was pressured to withdraw his statement, with the Speaker advising him to focus solely on presenting the report.

The uproar continued when Rotimi Jr. attempted to resume his presentation of the Nigerian Content Development Board report, but he was once again shouted down by the opponents of the tax reforms.

One of the vocal critics, Dr. Ghali Mustafa Tijjani, a representative from Gaya/Albasu/Ajingi Federal Constituency of Kano State, spoke out against the proposed tax reforms. Tijjani, from the opposition New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), argued that the bills would disproportionately affect the poor, making life even harder for Nigerians.

He warned that the reforms were capitalist in nature and would worsen the financial strain on ordinary citizens.

Tijjani emphasized that the government should explore other means of raising revenue, such as addressing revenue leakages and utilizing the country’s abundant mineral resources.

He also criticized the government’s focus on large infrastructure projects, like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, instead of prioritizing investments that would benefit ordinary Nigerians, such as supporting small and medium businesses.

According to Tijjani, the proposed tax increases, particularly the planned rise in VAT from 7.5% to 15% by 2030, would ultimately be passed on to the consumer, further burdening the public.

Tijjani’s concerns echoed the position of the Northern Governors Forum, calling for tax holidays for small businesses and a focus on employment generation.

He pointed out the harsh economic conditions facing Nigerians, with rising inflation, job losses, and government agencies laying off workers.

He added that the timing of the tax reform bills was wrong, given the current economic challenges, and advocated for more support for small-scale businesses to stimulate the economy and provide jobs.

Disappointment In Southern Kaduna As Former Okada Rider Who Won Rep Seat On Obidient Wave Joins APC

Disappointment As Former Okada Rider Who Won Rep Seat On Obedient Wave Joins APC

Donatus Mathew, a former okada rider who won the Kaura federal constituency seat in Southern Kaduna on the wave of the Labour Party’s success during the 2023 elections, has switched to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mathew, who defeated the then House of Representatives Minority Chief Whip, Gideon Gwani, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had garnered significant support, especially after unseating the four-term incumbent. His victory was celebrated by many in Southern Kaduna, with activists hailing the rise of a fresh face in politics.

However, the defection has drawn criticism, particularly from Stephen Kefason, an activist who previously supported Mathew. Kefason expressed his disillusionment on social media, saying, “This opportunistic okada rider, who used Peter Obi’s popularity to win the Kaura seat, has now defected to the APC. He has failed to deliver in the National Assembly, with no bills or motions to his name.”

Enugu Catholic Priest Kidnapped Along Ugwuogo Nike-Opi Nsukka Road

A Catholic priest, Reverend Father Gerald Ohaeri, has been abducted while traveling along the Ugwuogo Nike-Opi Nsukka expressway in Enugu State.

Father Ohaeri, who serves at the Isienu Nsukka Parish within the Nsukka Catholic Diocese, was on his way back from a function in Enugu on Saturday when he was seized by kidnappers.

At the time of this report, Father Ohaeri is still being held captive, and efforts to trace his whereabouts are ongoing.

Authorities have not yet released further details, and attempts to contact the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, were unsuccessful.

This incident highlights growing concerns about insecurity along the expressway, which has been notorious for frequent criminal activities.

Despite the presence of multiple police and military checkpoints along the less than 10-kilometer stretch, the Enugu-Abakpa-Ugwuogo-Nke-Opi-Nsukka road remains a hotspot for such crimes.

The Enugu State government has recently ramped up efforts to curb criminal activities in the region, including demolishing properties suspected of being used to house hostages.

Despite these efforts, many kidnapping victims are taken to neighboring states such as Benue and Kogi.

Vietnamese Court Upholds Death Sentence For Property Tycoon

A Vietnamese court upheld the death penalty on Tuesday for property mogul Truong My Lan, 68, after she was convicted in a massive fraud case involving billions of dollars.

Lan was found guilty of embezzling funds from the Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB), which prosecutors claim she controlled.

The fraud amounted to $27 billion, making it one of the largest financial scandals in Vietnam’s history.

Despite the court’s decision to maintain the death sentence, there remains a possibility for Lan to avoid execution.

The court ruled that if she repays 75% of the stolen assets, her sentence could be reduced to life imprisonment.

Lan, who founded the Van Thinh Phat real estate group, was sentenced earlier this year after a lengthy investigation into the fraudulent scheme.

During her appeal, she argued that the quickest way to repay the stolen money would be by liquidating SCB and selling off assets to repay the State Bank of Vietnam and the victims.

The case has had a profound impact on the country, with tens of thousands of people losing their savings in the scam, which also sparked rare protests.

Lan, who legally owned only 5% of SCB, was found to have controlled more than 90% of the bank through family and associates.

The State Bank of Vietnam intervened in April to stabilize SCB, though the exact amount of funds injected into the bank was not disclosed.

In addition to the fraud charges, Lan was also convicted of money laundering last month and sentenced to life in prison in a separate trial.

The scandal is part of a broader anti-corruption campaign that has led to the arrest of several officials and business leaders, including senior figures at the central bank.

Lan’s assets include luxury real estate, shopping malls, and housing developments in Ho Chi Minh City, which could potentially be liquidated to help repay the embezzled funds.

The total financial damage from her actions is estimated to be around 6% of Vietnam’s GDP for 2023.

Low Income Retirees Now Allowed To Withdraw Entire Pension Savings – PENCOM

The National Pension Commission (PENCOM) has announced that low-income retirees can now choose to withdraw their total retirement savings or continue receiving their monthly pensions until the approval of the Minimum Pension Guarantee.

This development is outlined in a memo, signed by A.M. Salem, the Head of the Surveillance Department at PENCOM, dated November 27, 2024.

It follows the introduction of Section 4.1 (g) in the revised regulation for managing retirement and terminal benefits, in alignment with Nigeria’s new minimum wage of N70,000.

Previously, retirees were allowed to access only one-third of their total Retirement Savings Accounts (RSAs) at the time of retirement.

However, with the new regulation, retirees whose monthly pensions are less than one-third of the minimum wage (approximately N23,333.33) will now be allowed to either withdraw the entire balance in their RSA or continue receiving their pension payments until the Minimum Pension Guarantee is established.

The memo, addressed to pension fund administrators and custodians, refers to President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the new National Minimum Wage Bill into law on July 29, 2024, which raised the national minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000.

The new provision under Section 4.1 (g) of the revised pension regulation states that if a retiree’s RSA balance is insufficient to provide a monthly pension of at least N23,333.33, the retiree can choose to receive the full amount in the RSA as a lump sum.

Pension fund administrators have been instructed to process retirement benefits using the new N70,000 minimum wage and ensure compliance with the updated regulation.

Retirees who choose to receive their full RSA balance in a lump sum must submit a signed consent form, a formal withdrawal request, and a payment schedule for approval by PENCOM.

This change takes immediate effect, signaling a significant shift in the handling of pension withdrawals for retirees with lower monthly benefits.

Over 229 Police Officers Killed In 2023, 2024 – Investigation Reveals

Between January 2023 and October 2024, at least 229 personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) lost their lives in the line of duty.

The victims were killed by a range of criminal groups, including bandits, gunmen, Boko Haram terrorists, cultists, and armed robbers, in various states across the country.

In 2023 alone, 118 police officers were killed, with another 111 fatalities recorded in the first ten months of 2024.

The figures also include several police officers who were killed by violent mobs in different regions.

One recent case involved Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Augustine Osupayi, a member of the Lagos Police Command, who was lynched by a mob in Agege in October 2024 while trying to prevent the execution of jungle justice.

In the early part of 2023, at least 12 police officers were killed between January 2 and 30.

In February, seven more officers were killed in states including Imo, Nasarawa, Edo, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Benue, Niger, and Delta.

The violence continued throughout the year, with the police losing 11 officers in March and 23 in April 2023.

On April 30, bandits killed six officers in Kebbi State, while gunmen took the lives of five police officers in Imo State on April 21, 2023.

From May to July 2023, a total of 31 police officers were killed, with 17 of them falling in May.

Additionally, 22 officers were killed in Benue State between August and December 2023.

This year, the killings persisted. At the beginning of 2024, 15 officers were killed while on duty, including seven in Delta State.

In February, 13 officers were killed by members of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In March, hoodlums killed 10 officers in Ebonyi, Imo, Anambra, and Edo states.

In an interview with Daily Trust, some police officers expressed sympathy for the families of fallen colleagues, yet stressed their determination to continue serving despite the risks.

One officer remarked, “It’s unfortunate that some of our colleagues have lost their lives to criminals, but we are all aware of the risks involved in our line of duty. No profession is without its challenges. Even if you don’t die in the line of duty, you will eventually pass on.”

Another officer named Abdul added, “Anyone who dies while serving their country dies a hero. This will not stop us from carrying out our responsibilities.”

Ndifrike, another officer, acknowledged the sorrow of losing colleagues but said the killings would not deter their commitment.

He called for better care for the families of deceased officers. “We need to ensure our families are well cared for when we are no longer here,” he said.

Security expert Abdullahi Garba urged the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to equip officers with modern policing tools to better protect themselves while fighting crime.

He described the killings of officers as deeply demoralizing and emphasized the need for better equipment to combat armed criminals.

Silas Daves, a security sector reform expert, advised officers to work as a team during operations to avoid ambushes.

He alleged that some police officers might be betraying their colleagues by sharing information with criminals.

Daves also stressed the importance of intelligence gathering to prevent further attacks on officers.

The Nigeria Police Force has yet to comment publicly on these ongoing killings. Despite repeated requests for comment, Force spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi did not respond to inquiries, either via calls or text messages.

However, a senior police officer revealed that an investigation has been launched by the Inspector-General of Police into the killings, with efforts underway to determine the circumstances behind the deaths.

Prioritize National Interest Over Personal Gain, Obi of Onitsha Warns Politicians

His Royal Majesty, Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, has called on Nigeria’s political leaders to place the nation’s interest above personal ambitions, warning that the country’s future is at risk due to rampant corruption.

Speaking at the public presentation of Bold Leap, a book written by Senator Chris Anyanwu, in Abuja, the Obi likened the country’s situation to a cow being continually milked without replenishment—saying the cow would eventually die if the corrupt practices continued.

He lamented the greed and lack of accountability within the political class, stressing that Nigeria’s progress could only be ensured if leaders prioritized the country’s welfare over personal and sectional interests.

“If we continue milking the cow, it will eventually die,” the Obi warned. “We’ve been talking about this issue for years, but now is the time for action. We have two choices: either we keep exploiting the country until it collapses or we choose to place Nigeria’s interest above everything else.”

He emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that time was running out. “We have the opportunity to either accelerate the country’s decline or turn things around quickly,” he stated.

The event, which marked the launch of Senator Anyanwu’s autobiography, Bold Leap, was attended by numerous dignitaries, including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, as well as other political figures, traditional rulers, and captains of industry.

The book is divided into three parts, spanning 600 pages and 19 chapters.

President Bola Tinubu was represented by the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Zaphaniah Jisalo. Former Senate Presidents, former governors, and influential leaders, such as the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, and Peter Obi, also graced the occasion.

During a panel discussion on “How Do We Fix Nigeria: System, Structure, Institutions, and Leadership?”, former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, sharply criticized Nigeria’s current political system, describing it as “electoralism” rather than true democracy.

He argued that the system’s failures were compounded by a lack of national vision and a failure to forge a national consensus.

Fayemi stressed the need for a clear direction, saying, “Every nation that seeks development starts with a national vision. We need to ask ourselves: who are we? What do we want for Nigeria in 10, 20, or 50 years?”

Briggs, another panelist, echoed the call for political restructuring, pointing out flaws in the electoral process. She criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its failures, especially in ensuring voter participation and fair representation.

“INEC has let us down,” Briggs said. “When people have voter cards but cannot vote, they are not truly choosing their leaders. It’s a fundamental problem. If the people can’t select their leaders, then those in power owe them nothing.”

She also lamented the lack of genuine patriotism in the country, saying, “Patriotism isn’t just about singing the national anthem. It’s about what you do for your country and what your country does for you.”

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe joined the discussion, calling attention to the failure of Nigeria’s institutions.

He cited a recent case where a public official who embezzled N23.2 billion was lightly punished by the court, highlighting the weakness of the judicial system in holding corrupt individuals accountable.

“We can’t build strong institutions if we don’t have the right people in positions of power,” Abaribe remarked, criticizing the leniency shown to those guilty of corruption.

Dr. Aminu Gamana also addressed the need for a cultural shift, stressing that the country needed a fundamental reorientation in its values.

He warned that until Nigerians began to demand more from their leaders and actively participate in the political process, elections would remain a mere formality with little to no real change.

“We need to re-educate ourselves as a society. If this continues, people will keep voting for leaders who offer them small handouts like indomie and spaghetti, instead of those who truly care for their future,” Gamana said.

2027: Splinter Group Forming New Party Unknown To Us – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the claims made by an alleged splinter group, Team New Nigeria (TNN), asserting that the individuals involved are not members of the party.

TNN announced on Sunday that its members were leaving the APC to form a new political party aimed at rescuing Nigeria from poverty, hunger, insecurity, and mismanagement.

The group’s National President, Modibbo Farakwai, declared at the inauguration of the Kano State harmonization committee that they were targeting at least 26 million voters nationwide.

Farakwai also emphasized that the formation of the “New Nigeria” party would provide a solution to misgovernance, selfish leadership, and corrupt political officeholders.

In response, the APC’s Deputy National Organising Secretary, Nze Chidi Duru, expressed surprise over the development, stating that the members of the group were not recognized as card-carrying members of the APC.

Duru also remarked that the group’s name and its president were unfamiliar to him.

He noted that genuine members of the APC would be aware of the party’s internal mechanisms for resolving grievances, rather than resorting to forming a new political party.

“If they are truly members of the APC, they would understand that there is a constitutional process for addressing leadership concerns within the party,” Duru explained.

Duru further suggested that the group’s actions revealed they were either not party members or lacked an understanding of the APC’s constitution.

He urged the group to explore the proper channels within the party’s constitution before making such drastic moves.

When asked about the potential impact of this splinter group on President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, Duru laughed off the concern, saying, “They are welcome to try and defeat the APC in 2027. Variety is the spice of life. Those wishing to form coalitions or join other parties are free to do so, as long as they act within the bounds of the law.”

Finnish Authorities Deny Simon Ekpa Bail

Finnish authorities have confirmed that Simon Ekpa, the self-proclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), will remain in detention ahead of his trial.

This decision follows the Finnish legal system’s refusal to grant bail in cases like his.

Ekpa, who holds dual Nigerian and Finnish citizenship, was arrested on November 21 by Finnish police and later remanded into custody by the Päijät-Häme District Court.

He faces charges of “spreading terrorist propaganda on social media,” allegedly committed in 2021 in Lahti, Finland.

Authorities accuse Ekpa of inciting violence and terrorism in Nigeria’s southeastern region through his online activities.

This has led the Nigerian government to request his extradition for prosecution. Ekpa’s trial is set for May 2025.

In response to queries about Ekpa’s potential for bail, Mikko Laaksonen, Senior Detective Superintendent at Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation, clarified Finland’s legal framework.

In an email on Saturday, Laaksonen explained, “Finnish criminal procedure does not allow for bail in such cases.”

He went further to assert that, under Finnish law, suspects are either remanded in custody or placed under a travel ban, depending on the case, to restrict their freedom of movement until trial.

As a result, Ekpa will remain in custody as the legal process continues, with Finnish authorities prioritizing measures that ensure he will remain within their jurisdiction until his court appearance.
