Bangladesh Court Issues Arrest Warrant For Exiled Former Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina

A Bangladesh court has issued an arrest warrant for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in exile since she fled to India in August following her removal from power during a student-led revolution.

The warrant was issued on Thursday, with Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam calling it a “remarkable day” for Bangladesh.

Advertorial

Hasina, who ruled the country for 15 years, faces allegations of widespread human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings and mass detentions of her political opponents.

The court ordered her arrest in connection with the deadly crackdown on protesters that led to her ousting.

According to the prosecutor, Hasina is accused of being responsible for massacres and crimes against humanity during the uprising in July and August.

Advertorial

The arrest warrant also targets the former general secretary of her Awami League party, Obaidul Quader, and 44 other individuals whose names have not been disclosed.

Since her government fell, many of Hasina’s allies have been detained, and key figures in her regime have been removed from their posts.

Despite her disappearance from public view, Hasina’s last known location was reported to be a military airbase near New Delhi, India.

Advertorial

The Bangladeshi government has revoked her diplomatic passport and may seek her extradition under an existing treaty with India.

However, the treaty includes a clause allowing India to refuse extradition if the charges are deemed political in nature.

The arrest warrant comes as victims of the violent crackdown, including family members of those killed, call for accountability.

Sumaiya Sarkar, the sister of a protester who died during the unrest, expressed hope that Hasina would face justice, stating, “We are looking forward to a fair trial.”

Sheikh Hasina was replaced by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who now leads a transitional government.

Yunus, known for his work in microfinance, has acknowledged the severe challenges ahead in restoring Bangladesh’s democratic institutions and repairing a broken system of public administration.

Rivers Crisis: Pro-Fubara Lawmakers Threaten Legal Action Against Amaewhule, 24 Others

Lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara have vowed to invoke the provisions of the 1999 Constitution against 25 former Assembly members, including embattled Martin Amaewhule.

The legislators accused the former members of undermining the integrity of the House by defecting to another political party, a move which they argue disqualifies them from holding their seats.

Advertorial

In a motion presented by the House Leader, Hon. Sokari Goodboy Sokari, he cited Section 99 of the Constitution, urging the House to take immediate action against the former lawmakers for their defection.

Sokari called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize bye-elections to fill the vacant seats of the former members.

Adopting the motion, Deputy Speaker Hon. Adolphus Orubienimigha insisted that the House must hold the former members accountable if they continued to act as lawmakers.

Speaker Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo also criticized INEC for failing to conduct the bye-elections, despite multiple requests made by the Assembly in December 2023 and May 2024. He urged INEC to act swiftly to ensure the constituencies are represented.

Meanwhile, the Assembly has approved Governor Fubara’s request to appoint five new special advisers.

The appointments, which are intended to accelerate the state’s development, were endorsed during the House’s 64th legislative sitting.

In related news, a political group, The Supreme Council for SIM Worldwide, has accused supporters of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, of stirring up political unrest in Rivers State.

Former NDDC Acting Managing Director, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, called on President Bola Tinubu to rein in Wike, arguing that his actions could undermine the peace in Rivers State.

The group accused Wike of inciting tensions in the state, despite having served as governor for eight years.

They urged the people of Rivers to resist any attempts by a few individuals to manipulate state resources for personal gain.

Transactions Above N500,000 May Land You In Trouble – Police Warn POS Operators

The Delta State Police Command has issued a strong warning to Point of Sale (POS) operators regarding transactions over ₦500,000, cautioning that such activities could potentially link them to criminal acts, particularly kidnappings.

SP Bright Edafe, the Public Relations Officer of the Command, revealed that POS operators engaging in high-value transactions risk becoming tools for kidnappers and other criminals.

Advertorial

He cited a recent case where a POS operator processed a ransom payment of ₦4,000,000, earning only ₦40,000 in commission.

“Don’t allow yourself to be used by kidnappers to collect ransom,” SP Edafe warned.

“These transactions will be traced back to you.”

Edafe further emphasized that any POS transaction exceeding ₦500,000 could land operators in serious legal trouble.

Advertorial

He urged operators to stay vigilant and adhere strictly to federal regulations, which are designed to limit large transactions and prevent misuse by criminals.

He added, “You might think you’re just doing business, but the legal consequences could be severe. Before your lawyer can intervene, you might spend time behind bars.”

The police also encouraged POS operators to report any suspicious transactions to authorities and follow proper guidelines to avoid being implicated in criminal activities.

Advertorial

The warning highlights the essential role POS operators play in ensuring security and the potential risks of ignoring regulatory measures.

“Be cautious and follow the rules,” SP Edafe advised.

NNPP Accuses APC of Creating Crisis In Opposition Parties To Retain Power Beyond 2027

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is deliberately fueling internal divisions within opposition political parties to maintain control of the country beyond the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during the flag-off campaign for the NNPP’s Ondo State governorship candidate, Olugbenga Edema, in Akure on Thursday, NNPP National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed accused the APC of orchestrating crises in opposition parties to weaken their structures and disrupt plans for a potential merger to challenge the ruling party.

Advertorial

“The APC is working hard to ensure it wins the 2027 general election, and there is clear evidence that they are meddling in the affairs of other parties,” Ahmed stated.

He called on opposition parties to safeguard their unity and integrity to remain a formidable force against the APC before and after the next elections.

Ahmed further revealed that the NNPP is open to forming alliances with other opposition parties in preparation for the 2027 polls, stressing that the APC must be ready to hand over power after President Bola Tinubu’s tenure.

Advertorial

“We are ready to collaborate with other political parties in any coalition effort that may arise ahead of the elections,” he added.

He urged Ondo State voters to rally behind Edema, describing him as a committed party loyalist with policies designed to address the economic challenges and hardships caused by the APC government.

Olugbenga Edema, the NNPP governorship candidate, also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a fair and transparent election, warning against any manipulation of results similar to what the party alleged occurred in Edo State.

Advertorial

“INEC must provide a level playing field for all parties. The people of Ondo State are highly enlightened, and we will protect our votes,” Edema declared.

He also cautioned the electoral body to respect the provisions of the Electoral Act, which mandates that vote counting should be done at the polling units, warning that any attempt to manipulate results in Ondo will not be tolerated.

Labour Hails Sanwo-Olu For Approving N85,000 Minimum Wage For Lagos Workers

The organised labour has commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for approving a minimum wage of N85,000 for workers in Lagos State.

Labour leaders described the decision as a positive step for state employees, especially considering the current economic challenges.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, Sanwo-Olu confirmed his administration’s commitment to paying the new minimum wage, stating that he wanted residents to see that “their government is working for them.”

Advertorial

Funmi Sessi, Chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Lagos, welcomed the announcement but noted that the union had anticipated an even higher wage due to the unique cost of living in the state.

“Lagos is different in terms of transportation, accommodation, utilities, and food expenses. Workers here pay more for everything,” Sessi said.

She also called for better infrastructure, particularly alternatives to road transportation, and urged the government to improve safety on the waterways following a recent fatal boat accident.

Advertorial

Ishola Adejumo, Chairperson of the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers’ Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU) in Lagos, echoed Sessi’s praise, describing the N85,000 minimum wage as a significant and timely decision.

He emphasized the high cost of living in Lagos and stressed the need for fair wages.

“Lagos is the economic hub of Nigeria, and its workers face higher expenses compared to other states. The new wage is well-deserved,” Adejumo said.

Both labour leaders urged Governor Sanwo-Olu to continue supporting workers by maintaining subsidies for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and implementing other measures to ease the financial burden on residents.

The announcement has been met with optimism as Lagos continues to set the standard for other states across Nigeria.

Mbappé Will Cooperate With Judiciary In Rape Investigation If Necessary, Says Lawyer

Kylian Mbappé, who has been linked to a rape investigation in Sweden, will provide any necessary explanations directly to Swedish authorities, his lawyer, Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, confirmed on Thursday.

“He prioritizes presenting his explanations to the Swedish judiciary, if required,” Canu-Bernard told AFP, while condemning media reports that Mbappé had commented on the incident during his trip to Stockholm.

Advertorial

French outlets Le Parisien and RMC Sports reported that the French and Real Madrid striker engaged in consensual sex with a young woman during a recent visit to Stockholm.

According to these reports, Mbappé has messages from the woman that depict their encounter in a positive light and confirm mutual consent.

However, Le Parisien could not verify if the woman in the messages is the same individual who filed the rape complaint.

Advertorial

Mbappé had traveled to Stockholm from October 9 to 11 with friends, following his exclusion from France’s Nations League squad due to a thigh injury.

Swedish media reported that the group visited a restaurant and nightclub during their stay. After their departure, a woman filed a police report alleging rape.

On Monday, Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet revealed the initiation of a rape investigation, which Mbappé labeled as “fake news” on social media.

Advertorial

He suggested the timing of the accusations might be linked to his financial dispute with Paris Saint-Germain, his former club, just ahead of a scheduled hearing.

“It’s becoming so predictable, the day before the hearing, as if by coincidence,” Mbappé wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

A Swedish prosecutor has confirmed the investigation is underway but has not named Mbappé. His lawyer reiterated that Mbappé is “at ease” and confident, as he has done “nothing wrong.”

Okuama Community: Court Adjourns N2Billion Suit Against Nigerian Army To November

A Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned a N2 billion fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Mr. Lucky Okodeh, the former Caretaker Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government in Bayelsa State, to November 28.

The case was adjourned by Justice Binta Nyako following an oral request from Okodeh’s lawyer, Asmau Yunusa, who sought time to respond to a counter-affidavit submitted by Mimi Ayua, counsel for the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa.

Advertorial

Okodeh, represented by human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, filed the suit (marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/590/2024) on May 3 against Gen. Musa and Chief of Army Staff (CAS), Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.

He is seeking N2 billion in damages, accusing the Nigerian Army of unlawfully publishing his photograph in connection with the killing of 17 soldiers in Okuama, Delta State, despite his name not being on the official wanted list.

Okodeh contends that the defendants’ actions have violated his personal liberty and dignity, damaging his political career and forcing him into hiding.

He also asks the court to declare his inclusion in the publication unlawful, award the N2 billion compensation, and issue an injunction preventing further harassment or arrest by the Army.

Additionally, he seeks a public apology to restore his reputation.

Advertorial

At Thursday’s hearing, Yunusa informed the court that she had only just received the CDS’s counter-affidavit and required time to respond.

The 2nd respondent, Gen. Lagbaja, was not represented in court.

Justice Nyako, in turn, suggested that the parties attempt to resolve the issue amicably and adjourned the case for further mention on November 28, instructing that the 2nd respondent be served a hearing notice.

Advertorial

The lawsuit stems from an incident on March 14, where 17 Nigerian Army officers were killed in Okuama.

In response, the Defence Headquarters declared eight individuals wanted, but Okodeh’s photograph was mistakenly published under another name, a name he claims no one in his family bears.

As a result, he was forced to withdraw from the Bayelsa State LG elections scheduled for April 11, where he was the Peoples Democratic Party’s chairmanship candidate.

Advertorial

Okodeh is seeking relief in the form of an injunction to prevent his further harassment and demands a public apology from the CDS and CAS to be published in both print and electronic media to allow him to resume his normal life.

EFCC Presents 15th Witness In Fayose’s Alleged Money Laundering Case

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday introduced its 15th witness in the ongoing trial of former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, over charges of money laundering.

The witness, Mr. Joseph Machleb, who is not proficient in English, was questioned by the EFCC’s lead prosecutor, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN).

Advertorial

Machleb, a resident of Akure and a mechanic for Samchase Nigeria Ltd., testified that he co-founded JJ Technical Services Ltd. with his elder brother, but handed over the company’s operations to a man named Azeez Michelle to seek contracts.

He stated that he had no knowledge of the company’s involvement in property transactions.

Advertorial

Under cross-examination by the defense counsel, Olalekan Ojo (SAN), Machleb admitted to authorizing Michelle to handle certain transactions on behalf of the company, following the presentation of a signed document dated November 20, 2013, which was accepted as evidence (Exhibit A20).

Despite this, the witness claimed he was unaware of Michelle executing any transactions for the company.

The defense further questioned Machleb about his knowledge of Fayose, to which he responded that he had only seen him on television and had no business dealings with him or his administration.

Advertorial

Machleb also denied having any interaction with one Biodun Agbele, who is implicated in the case.

Fayose is facing charges of alleged N6.9 billion fraud and money laundering, which include accusations of receiving N1.2 billion to fund his 2014 gubernatorial campaign, receiving $5 million from former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, and using proceeds of crime to acquire properties in Lagos and Abuja.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was initially granted bail in 2018.

The case, which is now before Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke, will continue on October 18, 2024.
