Hardship: I’m Shocked Nigerians Are Not Protesting Against Politicians – Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has voiced his frustration over the public’s lack of action in response to the ongoing economic hardships in Nigeria.

In an interview with ABN TV, the former Rivers State governor expressed his anger at the apparent silence of citizens despite rising costs and difficulties in affording basic needs like fuel.

Advertorial

“I’m angry with the citizens. I have said it several times. You can see a group of people stealing your money, impoverishing you, you cannot buy fuel and anything,” Amaechi said.

He also highlighted the ongoing political campaigns in Edo State, questioning their relevance in the midst of widespread economic struggles.

Advertorial

“Look at what happened in Edo State. Should any politician be campaigning in Edo?” he asked, suggesting that citizens should be more vocal and take a stand against politicians. “The people should be angry. There should be protests. Not even protests against anybody but against the politicians that ‘we won’t vote’. There won’t be any election in our state.”

Amaechi urged Nigerians to send a strong message by refraining from participating in elections until their basic needs are addressed.

Advertorial

“That is what people should be saying. The rate of hunger now… if people like us cannot afford diesel, you can imagine what is happening to those who do not have children like us,” he added.

In a pointed remark on the worsening economic situation, he said, “Somebody said what this government has achieved is that it has made Nigerians to be strong in the sense that Nigerians now trek.”

With a touch of irony, he added, “And you know walking helps the heart.”

Advertorial

While expressing his frustration with the current state of affairs, Amaechi refrained from making any direct political statements, concluding, “I am not interested in politics…I will discuss politics at the right time.”

Just In: Appeal Court Adjourns IPOB’s Case

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has postponed the hearing of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)’s appeal against its designation as a terrorist group by the Nigerian government.

The hearing is now set for October 31.

The three-judge panel instructed both sides to submit all necessary legal documents before the next session.

IPOB’s appeal challenges the Federal High Court’s 2017 ruling, delivered by the late Justice Abdul Abdu-Kafarati, which banned the group and labeled its activities illegal.

Advertorial

The court made this decision following an ex-parte motion filed by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, SAN, on behalf of the government.

Justice Kafarati further instructed that the order be published in the official gazette and in two national newspapers.

In January 2018, IPOB’s attempt to contest the proscription was rejected. The court upheld its earlier ruling, stating that the group posed a threat to national security.

Advertorial

IPOB’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, had argued that IPOB was not a registered entity in Nigeria and, therefore, could not be legally banned.

However, the court dismissed this argument, stating that even if IPOB was registered in other countries, it could still face legal action in Nigeria.

IPOB contends that Justice Kafarati’s ruling was flawed and that the group’s activities do not meet the legal definition of terrorism.

Advertorial

They said that IPOB is a non-violent movement advocating for self-determination, in contrast to violent groups such as the Fulani herdsmen, which have not been labeled as terrorists.

The group is seeking to have the proscription order overturned.

The detained leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has also applied to be joined as an interested party in the case.

US Election: Obama Hits Campaign Trail, Mobilizes Support for Kamala Harris

Former President Barack Obama is set to lend his star power to Kamala Harris’s election campaign on Thursday, aiming to energize voters in the critical swing state of Pennsylvania.

Obama will campaign in Pittsburgh, a steel city, just a day after Harris’s Republican opponent, Donald Trump, held a rally in the vital state.

As one of the most influential figures in the Democratic Party, Obama will focus on encouraging early voting, whether in-person or by mail, as Harris works to secure as many votes as possible in this competitive race.

Advertorial

On Wednesday, Trump rallied in Scranton, Pennsylvania—the hometown of President Joe Biden—before moving on to Detroit, Michigan, another key battleground state.

While addressing blue-collar voters in Scranton, Trump emphasized his energy policy with a “drill, baby, drill” mantra and criticized Harris on economic issues.

Advertorial

Meanwhile, Harris will travel to Nevada to engage with Latino voters, although the White House has indicated she will remain updated throughout the day regarding Hurricane Milton, which made landfall in Florida late Wednesday.

Biden has warned that the storm could be the “storm of the century.”

Obama’s visit to Pennsylvania marks the beginning of a month-long campaign effort for Harris across seven pivotal states that are expected to determine the outcome of the 2024 election.

Advertorial

Currently, Harris and Trump are in a tight race, both nationally and in battleground states like Pennsylvania.

Harris’s campaign is counting on the support of Obama, who served as president from 2009 until January 2017, to rally Black and young voters as she seeks an advantage ahead of the November 5 election.

A key focus of Obama’s message will be to promote early voting in what is shaping up to be a closely contested election.

Trump, on the other hand, has frequently criticized mail-in voting, linking it to his loss to Biden in 2020, which he continues to dispute.

Despite his campaign’s attempts to promote early voting, Trump has expressed skepticism about it on multiple occasions.

“President Obama believes the stakes of this election could not be more consequential, and that is why he is doing everything he can to help elect Vice President Harris,” said Eric Schultz, Obama’s senior advisor, in a statement.

At the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August, Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama received enthusiastic responses while endorsing Harris.

Obama highlighted Harris’s groundbreaking position as the first woman, Black, and South Asian vice president, describing her as the political heir to his legacy.

He rallied the crowd with chants of “Yes she can,” a play on his own 2008 campaign slogan, while cautioning that the 2024 election would likely remain competitive in a divided country.

In addition to his campaigning efforts, Obama has raised over $76 million for the Democratic ticket in this year’s presidential race.

He officially endorsed Harris, 59, following Biden’s unexpected withdrawal from the race in July.

Fuel Price Jumps To N1,030 Per Litre

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has raised the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to N1,030 per litre at various outlets in Abuja as of Wednesday.

This increase follows NNPC’s recent decision to terminate its exclusive purchasing agreement with Dangote Refinery, which previously allowed NNPC to be the sole buyer of petrol from the refinery.

Advertorial

With the agreement now ended, other marketers can directly negotiate and purchase petrol from Dangote Refinery, signaling a shift towards a more competitive market.

This change aligns with the principles of a fully deregulated fuel sector, where products are sold based on a “willing buyer, willing seller” model.

Just last month, NNPC raised the fuel price to N855 per litre in Lagos and N897 in Abuja. The company reported purchasing petrol from Dangote Refinery at N898.78 per litre and selling it to marketers at N765.99 per litre, resulting in a subsidy of nearly N133 per litre, which NNPC indicated it can no longer maintain.

Advertorial

This price adjustment reflects the ongoing changes in Nigeria’s fuel market dynamics and the pressures faced by the NNPC in subsidizing fuel costs.

Senate Orders Governors, State Assemblies To Enforce Supreme Court Ruling On LG Autonomy

The Senate has directed state governors and Houses of Assembly to comply with the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy, particularly in relation to the financial independence of the 774 local councils in Nigeria.

This follows a closed-door session held on Wednesday, where senators debated efforts by some state governments to obstruct the enforcement of the July 11 ruling.

Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, announced the resolutions after the session, emphasizing the Senate’s plan to amend sections of the 1999 Constitution to provide full autonomy to local government administrations across the country.

The Supreme Court ruling, which granted local governments autonomy, was delivered after the federal government, through the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, filed a suit.

The judgement is intended to liberate local councils from financial dependence on state governments.

Advertorial

Senator Tony Nwoye (LP, Anambra North), during the plenary, raised concerns under Senate orders 41 and 51, alleging that some state governors were influencing state Assemblies to pass laws that would require local governments to continue remitting funds into a joint state/local government account, in violation of the Supreme Court’s judgement. Nwoye’s motion was co-sponsored by 10 other senators.

However, Senator Adamu Aliero (PDP, Kebbi Central) countered that the Supreme Court ruling was enforceable nationwide and urged the Senate not to deliberate on the matter, citing the constitution.

Advertorial

Senate President Godswill Akpabio echoed Aliero’s point, referencing Section 162 (6) of the 1999 Constitution, which stipulates that the Supreme Court’s ruling should be upheld.

The debate eventually led to the emergency closed-door session, after which the Senate called on all state governments and legislative bodies to respect the Supreme Court’s decision.

Additionally, the Senate resolved to pursue constitutional amendments to guarantee the financial autonomy of local governments, ensuring they are no longer reliant on state authorities for funding.

‘PDP’s Shrinking Umbrella Behind Lawmakers’ Exodus’ – Ugochinyere

In a strong critique of the current state of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, a member of the House of Representatives, has attributed the party’s challenges to its failure to accommodate the diverse interests of its members.

Ugochinyere, speaking at a conference titled “Fix PDP to Fix Nigeria” in Abuja, said that the party’s symbolic umbrella was “no longer wide enough to cover” its stakeholders, leading to a mass exodus of lawmakers and key figures.

Advertorial

The lawmaker expressed disappointment over the PDP’s diminishing role as Nigeria’s main opposition, stating, “We are not even up to 10% as an opposition political party.”

He lamented the party’s inability to effectively challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), pointing to internal divisions and leadership issues as major obstacles.

Advertorial

Ugochinyere highlighted the ongoing crisis within the PDP leadership, singling out Amb. Umar Damagum’s tenure as Acting National Chairman as a major source of discontent.

He criticized the party for failing to adhere to its constitution in selecting a new chairman, referencing Articles 45 and 47 of the PDP constitution.

“The NWC is like a judge. You are not only supposed to do justice but must be seen to be doing justice,” he said, urging the party to resolve its leadership struggles.

Advertorial

He also acknowledged that the party’s inability to unite its members had resulted in significant losses, referencing Peter Obi’s emergence as a strong contender in the last election.

“We have been so decimated that Peter Obi left just a few days ago and now controls the same 12 states as we do,” Ugochinyere noted, warning that the new generation of voters is drifting away from the PDP.

Advertorial

The conference, themed “Fix PDP to Fix Nigeria,” emphasized the need for internal reforms to rescue the party from its current state.

Ugochinyere called for the PDP to fix its internal issues before it could effectively play its role in Nigeria’s political landscape.

He also pointed to former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar’s role in the party’s decline, criticizing his handling of the 2023 election and his strained relationship with key governors.

Ugochinyere argued that Atiku’s indifference to the grievances of five PDP governors ahead of the election was a major misstep, further weakening the party.

While acknowledging that some of the problems were inherited by the current leadership, Ugochinyere stressed the need for immediate reforms, urging party members to stop avoiding the hard conversations and to prioritize unity and leadership integrity if the PDP is to regain its strength.

President Paul Biya Is ‘Alive and Well’, Cameroon Govt Debunks Death Rumors

The Cameroonian presidency has dismissed rumors circulating about the death of the country’s 91-year-old president, Paul Biya.

Speculation regarding Biya’s health had been growing for nearly a month, fueled by his absence from key international events, including the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF) summit, and the Sustainable Development Forum in Hamburg.

Advertorial

The rumors intensified when ABS Africa TV announced his alleged death on Tuesday, sparking widespread concern.

Biya has not made any public appearances since departing Beijing on September 8, where he attended the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

He was expected to return to Cameroon in mid-September, but his return was delayed on the advice of his medical team, leading to further speculation.

Advertorial

Reports from the Cameroon Intelligence Report suggested that the president had been battling heart problems, memory loss, and prostate cancer, which had allegedly worsened and led to his death over the weekend in a hospital in either Paris or Geneva. Biya has frequently sought medical care and rest in Switzerland over the years.

However, the Cameroonian government quickly debunked these claims.

Advertorial

Samuel Ayolo, Director of the Presidency’s Civil Cabinet, issued a statement assuring the public that Biya is alive and well.

He dismissed the death rumors as the work of “malicious people” spreading falsehoods on social media.

“For some time now, certain malicious individuals on social networks have tried to make people believe that the President of the Republic is seriously ill or has passed away,” Ayolo stated.

Advertorial

“The Civil Cabinet of the Presidency wishes to reassure all compatriots and the international community that the Head of State is in excellent health and is conducting his duties from Geneva.”

Ayolo also condemned the misuse of freedom of expression to stir unrest, asserting that Biya has remained in Geneva since returning from China and is continuing to work.

Paul Biya has been a central figure in Cameroonian politics since 1982, making him one of the world’s longest-serving leaders and the oldest head of state in Africa.

Advertorial

His rule, spanning over four decades, has been marked by accusations of electoral fraud and allegations of authoritarianism.

Despite these criticisms, Biya has been re-elected six times, maintaining his grip on power.

In 2023, Biya reshuffled his defense ministry amid growing concerns over instability in neighboring countries, particularly the coups occurring across the Sahel region.

Enugu LG Tribunal: LP Chairmanship Candidate Drags ENSIEC, Council Chairman, PDP To Court

The Labour Party and it’s chairmanship candidate for Awgu Local Government area in the just-concluded Enugu local government election, Hon. Cajetan Aganigbo, has filed a suit against the Awgu local government Council Chairman, Hon. Uche Okolo, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) at the Local Government Council Election Tribunal, seeking the cancellation of the election.

In petition number EPT/02/2024, the petitioners told the tribunal that the PDP candidate did not secure the majority of lawful votes cast during the election, which was held on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

Counsel to the petitioners, Chief Sir O.A.U. Onyema, argued that the results announced by ENSIEC were inaccurate, as the PDP candidate did not receive any valid votes.

He maintained that ENSIEC, based on erroneous recorded votes, wrongfully declared Hon. Uche Okolo as the winner.

Advertorial

The petitioners told the court that the election was marred by irregularities, which include; over-voting, non-compliance with electoral guidelines, and manipulation of results in favor of the PDP candidate.

The petitioners among other things are seeking an order of the Honourable Tribunal declaring the 2nd Respondent not qualified to contest the elections into the Chairmanship position of Awgu Local Government Council.

Advertorial

“AN ORDER setting aside the declaration and return of the 2nd Respondent as Chairman Awgu Local Government Council for non-compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (As amended), the Electoral Act, 2022; the Enugu State Local Government Law 2020, and the ENSIEC Guidelines for the Conduct of the Local Government Election 2024.”

“A DECLARATION that the 21st September 2024 Local Government Election in Awgu LGA, failed in all ramification and any result or award or return emanating from same is incorrect, illegal, null and void and of effect.”

Advertorial

“AN ORDER of this honourable Tribunal declaring as INVALID the unlawful votes ascribed to the 2nd Respondent, and directing the 1st Respondent to immediately withdraw the Certificate of return issued to the 2nd respondent, within 7 days of this Order.”

“An Order of Tribunal declaring as illegal and unlawful all acts performed, or purported to have been performed by the 2nd respondent, while relying on the Certificate of return, and the following oath of allegiance to the Office of Executive Chairman, subscribed by him.”

“AN ORDER directing the 1st respondent to CONDUCT a fresh credible and transparent Local Government Election in Awgu LGA, of Enugu State, with 30 days of this order.”
