Land Dispute: Enugu Community Backs Prof. Nnaji, Cites Court Rulings In Defense Against Grabbing Claims By Ezza Group

The Onuogba community in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State has refuted allegations that former Minister of Power, Prof. Bart Nnaji, is involved in land grabbing in their territory.

The accusations surfaced last weekend when protesters from the Ezza-Nkomoro group claimed that the chairman of Geometric Power, Prof. Nnaji, was attempting to forcibly seize land in Onuogba-Nike, near the Enugu-Abakaliki highway.

However, the Onuogba community has rejected these claims, calling them baseless and misleading.

During a press briefing, Chief Emmanuel Ubosi, the former President-General of Onuogba-Nike, clarified that the Ezza-Nkomoro people, who are accusing Prof. Nnaji, are actually settlers in the area.

According to him, the Ezza-Nkomoro group originally migrated from Ezza-Agu in Ebonyi State and were granted permission by the Onuogba community in 1956 to settle on a designated portion of land.

Advertorial

Ubosi explained that the Ezza-Nkomoro people were given over 62 hectares of land for their settlement, but over time they began to encroach on other lands not allocated to them.

He emphasized that the land in question, which Prof. Nnaji is being accused of grabbing, is not part of the land given to the Ezza-Nkomoro people but lies in the Idume area, which has no connection to the disputed claims.

Advertorial

According to Ubosi, Prof. Nnaji legally acquired the land in 1978 from the original owners, the Alinta family, and has since used it for agricultural purposes, cultivating citrus and pineapples.

He further stated that the ownership of the land had been contested by the Ezza-Nkomoro group as far back as 1974, but the Onuogba community had obtained a favorable court ruling in 2004.

The case was appealed by the Ezza-Nkomoro people but was once again decided in favor of the Onuogba community in 2016.

Advertorial

Chief Ubosi presented maps and court documents to support his claims, urging the government to intervene and prevent further encroachment by the Ezza-Nkomoro group on land that rightfully belongs to the Onuogba community and has been sold to Prof. Bart Nnaji.

Prof. Nnaji’s legal counsel, Barr. Benjamin Nwobodo, also weighed in, explaining that the Ezza-Nkomoro group had failed to provide any documentation to challenge the ownership of the land by the Alinta family, from whom Nnaji purchased the property.

Nwobodo clarified that Prof. Bart Nnaji acquired the land lawfully and has made efforts to engage in negotiations with affected individuals, disproving any claims of land grabbing.

According to Nwobodo, the legal battle over the land ended in 2013 when the court affirmed Alinta’s ownership, leading to the land being transferred to Prof. Nnaji.

He emphasized that the structures demolished on the land were not owned by the Ezza-Nkomoro people and urged the community to accept the court’s rulings.

Nwobodo concluded by affirming that Prof. Nnaji’s acquisition of the land is legitimate and that the accusations of land grabbing are unfounded.

Despite the Ezza-Nkomoro group’s protests, all legal decisions have favored Prof. Nnaji and the Onuogba community.

LP: Those Who Begged Us for Tickets Are Now Fighting Us – Abure

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has expressed frustration over the actions of some leaders who joined the party ahead of the 2023 general election and are now at odds with its leadership.

The faction specifically called out former presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti for their roles in the party’s internal crisis.

Following a stakeholders’ meeting organized by Otti, former Finance Minister Nenadi Usman was appointed to lead a caretaker committee for the party.

Advertorial

Obi and his running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, were also present at the meeting, signaling a shift in support away from Abure’s leadership.

In a statement issued by Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the Abure camp expressed dismay at the situation, recalling how the party made significant sacrifices to accommodate some of these leaders when they were denied tickets in their former political parties.

Ifoh lamented that many of these individuals are now seeking to remove Abure, despite benefiting from the party’s support during the last election.

Advertorial

The Abure faction also criticized the actions of Obi and Otti, accusing them of betrayal during a difficult time for the party. Ifoh emphasized the Labour Party’s commitment to both leaders during the 2023 election, stating that the party fought hard to support their candidacies, even in the face of judicial and political challenges.

In response to a lawsuit filed by the party, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) claimed in a counter-affidavit that it no longer recognizes the Abure-led leadership due to the expiration of Abure’s tenure.

Advertorial

The commission also dismissed the validity of the Labour Party’s March 2024 National Convention, which re-elected Abure as chairman.

However, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed defended the decision to replace Abure, insisting that his removal was in accordance with the party’s constitution, as his tenure had expired.

Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the National Caretaker Committee in Abuja, Baba-Ahmed urged Abure and his supporters to drop their opposition and work with the caretaker committee to rebuild the party ahead of future elections.

Advertorial

Baba-Ahmed also reassured party members that there is no internal crisis within the LP and expressed confidence in the party’s prospects for the 2027 presidential election and increased representation in the National Assembly.

PDP Leadership Crisis Deepens As Governors Split Over Quest To Sack Damagum

The leadership crisis within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is deepening, as top officials appear divided over whether to remove the party’s Acting National Chairman, Illiya Damagum.

On Tuesday, members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) met with Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, who indicated that Damagum’s position had become untenable and that the Northcentral zone should fill the leadership vacancy.

Advertorial

This followed the party’s practice after the resignation of Bamanga Tukur, when another leader from the Northeast, Ahmadu Adamu Mu’azu, took over as PDP National Chairman.

The NWC delegation, led by National Legal Adviser Kamaluddeen Adeyemi, included National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba and National Vice Chairman Emmanuel Bovao.

Their discussions with Mohammed revolved around the constitutional appropriateness of Damagum’s continued stay in office and the need for the Northcentral zone to assume the chairmanship.

Meanwhile, another faction of the NWC, led by Damagum, met with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde in Ibadan, where Makinde expressed strong support for the acting chairman.

He affirmed that he was “100 per cent” behind Damagum and the NWC’s efforts to reposition the PDP, emphasizing the need to focus on unity and the upcoming governorship election in Edo State.

Makinde dismissed speculation that he did not support the party’s candidate in Edo, Asue Ighodalo, asserting his full backing for Ighodalo’s bid.

Governor Bala Mohammed also accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of deliberately planting moles within the PDP, particularly in Rivers State, to fuel internal divisions between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

Mohammed expressed confidence that the party would overcome its challenges and restore unity.

The PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) is working to mediate in the internal conflicts, with Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara praising Governor Mohammed’s efforts and committing the BoT’s support in resolving the issues.

The BoT has also indicated plans to meet with the two factions in Rivers to address the ongoing leadership dispute.

EFCC Chairman Accuses Accountants Of Facilitating Public Sector Fraud

Ola Olukoyede, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has called on accountants across Nigeria to adhere strictly to professional ethics and financial regulations to combat public sector fraud.

He asserted that fraud within the public sector is often facilitated by accountants.

Speaking at the 29th Annual National Conference of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Olukoyede, represented by Ahmed Pate, EFCC’s Director of Finance and Accounts, highlighted the critical role accountants play in enabling fraudulent activities.

Advertorial

“Public sector fraud is rarely executed without the involvement of an accountant,” Olukoyede stated, emphasizing that accountants frequently play a central role in various forms of fraud, including embezzlement, procurement fraud, payroll fraud, and pension fraud.

He cited notable cases involving former Accountant Generals of the Federation who were indicted for fraud, one of whom was an ANAN Fellow.

This individual, according to Olukoyede, prioritized personal financial gain over professional and national duties, leading to the mismanagement of public funds.

Advertorial

Olukoyede also referenced several cases where accountants were convicted of misappropriating public funds and aiding in money laundering.

He urged ANAN to take stringent measures against unethical behavior, including revoking the licenses of members found guilty of fraud.

The EFCC’s call underscores the need for greater accountability and integrity within the accounting profession to curb corruption and financial misconduct in the public sector.

Release Nnamdi Kanu, Restore Peace In Southeast – Igbo Leaders Tell Tinubu

The Igbo General Assembly (IGA) in Europe has called on President Bola Tinubu to facilitate the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to help restore peace and stability in Nigeria’s Southeast region.

The appeal was made during the 14th Igbo General Assembly held in Sevilla, Spain, where the group highlighted the link between Kanu’s detention and the rising insecurity in the region.

Advertorial

Chief Kingsley Ozo Ndibe, the President General of the IGA, faulted former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for ignoring multiple court rulings that had granted Kanu bail, calling it a violation of the IPOB leader’s fundamental human rights. According to Ndibe, the group believes that releasing Kanu would bring an end to the widespread agitations and insecurity that have plagued the Southeast since his arrest.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was granted bail several times, but the previous administration chose to ignore these court orders, which amounts to a complete violation of his fundamental rights,” said Ndibe.

Advertorial

“We are now appealing to President Tinubu to intervene, as a father of the nation, and help resolve this issue by releasing Kanu unconditionally, as has been done with other regional agitators.”

He expressed optimism that Kanu’s release would significantly reduce the influence of non-state actors, who have been responsible for creating instability in the Southeast.

Ndibe also urged Tinubu to apply political solutions if necessary, as was done in the cases of Sunday Igboho and agitators from other regions.

Advertorial

In her address at the assembly, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain, Naomi Chika Nwachukwu, urged Nigerians to remain patient with President Tinubu’s administration.

She reassured the community that the policies being introduced by the President would eventually lead to positive changes for the country.

“Mr. President is working hard. The policies he is putting in place now will materialize into positive outcomes soon,” Nwachukwu said.

Advertorial

“I encourage Nigerians to remain patient while these initiatives take effect. Positive change takes time, but I believe President Tinubu is fully committed to delivering on his campaign promises.”

She also commended the Nigerian diaspora in Spain for promoting the country’s cultural heritage, stressing the importance of unity among Nigerians, regardless of ethnic or religious backgrounds.

Nwachukwu praised the cultural display during the Igbo General Assembly and highlighted her plans to attend similar Yoruba events in other parts of Spain, emphasizing that Nigerians should celebrate their diversity and showcase their rich traditions wherever they are.

“Regardless of where you come from in Nigeria, we must stay united and continue to showcase our culture. Events like this are crucial in bringing Nigerians together and showing the world the beauty of our diversity,” she added.

The Igbo General Assembly event in Sevilla saw an impressive display of Nigerian cultural heritage and a strong call for peaceful resolutions to ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s Southeast.
