Abia: Female Truck Driver Blocks Highway In Protest Against Touts’ Harassment

On Wednesday, motorists and commuters on the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene federal highway faced severe disruptions after a female truck driver transporting cement from Calabar blocked the road to protest harassment by local touts.

Advertorial

The incident occurred just past the second gate of the Umuahia Building Material Market, Isieke, near Umudike.

The driver’s action halted traffic for several hours, trapping numerous vehicles attempting to enter or leave Umuahia.

Familiar with the route, some drivers sought alternative local paths to reach their destinations, especially those traveling to Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.

The female driver was not present at the scene, but her husband had been contacted by authorities.

Security personnel, including soldiers and members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), arrived to restore order.

They pleaded with the driver’s husband to contact his wife to remove the truck and ease the traffic. Despite his efforts, her phone remained unreachable.

Advertorial

Sympathizers expressed frustration and anger towards the touts, accusing them of detaining the driver at the spot since Tuesday night.

By Wednesday morning, in an act of defiance, she blocked the highway to voice her grievances.

A traffic officer at the scene reported that one of the touts had been arrested and taken to the police station.

Advertorial

Abia State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, confirmed that the Head of the Joint Taskforce had dispatched personnel to investigate the incident.

He emphasized the need to arrest and prosecute the touts and clear the blocked truck to prevent further inconvenience to commuters.

Kanu reiterated the state government’s commitment to eradicating touts and illegal revenue collectors from Abia roads to ensure the safety and convenience of road users.

LP Suspends Cross River Chairman Over Alleged Embezzlement

The Labour Party (LP) in Cross River State has suspended its chairman, Mr. Ogar Osim, citing allegations of embezzlement and anti-party activities.

Alongside Osim, the State Secretary, Mr. Felix Etim, was also suspended on Tuesday.

Advertorial

The suspension was announced in a press statement issued by the Chairman and Secretary of the State disciplinary committee, Bonnie Adie and Ibiang Igri, respectively.

The statement also named Eugene Obia and Allen Ekpe as the acting Chairman and Secretary until a congress is held to elect substantive officers.

Advertorial

“The decision to relieve them of their positions was taken following a thorough investigation into allegations of gross misconduct, anti-party activities, inability to maintain a state secretariat, embezzlement, and other serious issues,” the statement read.

“We are confident that Mr. Obia and Mr. Ekpe, appointed in acting capacities, will provide strong leadership and ensure the smooth functioning of the Labour Party in the state. We urge all members to cooperate with the new leadership and work together to achieve the party’s goals.”

Advertorial

In response, Osim dismissed the suspension as baseless and claimed that those who signed the suspension letter were impostors.

“Those persons who signed the purported suspension letter are impostors and I will describe them as stranger elements because their names are not in any of our registers, from ward level to chapter and state; we don’t know them,” Osim stated.

Osim also argued that any disciplinary committee, if legitimate, would require the signature of the party’s legal adviser to take any significant action.

“Even if there was anything like a disciplinary committee as they claimed, their letter should have been signed by the legal adviser. As a matter of fact, we are taking them to court; even if such a committee exists, they can only make recommendations, they don’t have powers to suspend,” he added.

Enugu: Court Imposes N20 Million Fine On UNN, Viagem Property For Environmental Damage

An Enugu State High Court in Nsukka has awarded N20 million in damages against the University of Nigeria and Viagem Property and Investment Limited for environmental degradation affecting the Ajuona Obukpa community.

Advertorial

In a ruling delivered by Justice Hyacenthia Ezugwu on Tuesday, the court also ordered both defendants to halt further construction on a hostel project until adequate erosion control measures are implemented in the affected community.

The case, brought by Hon. Nnaemeka Aleke on behalf of the Ajuona Obukpa community, was filed under suit No N/86/2020.

Advertorial

Aleke sought to prevent the university and the property company from continuing with the development of an 11,900-room hostel, citing environmental damage caused by flooding from the construction site.

Barrister Ikechukwu Odo, the plaintiff’s lead counsel, reported that in addition to the N20 million damages, the court imposed a N500,000 cost of action on the defendants. Odo noted that the court recognized the significant nuisance caused by inadequate erosion control measures from the project.

Advertorial

“The court’s final judgment resolved all issues in favor of Hon. Nnaemeka Aleke and the Ajuona Obukpa community. It confirmed the environmental harm caused by the lack of erosion control and mandated a halt to further development until corrective measures are undertaken,” Odo said.

He praised the court for its commitment to justice despite attempts by the defendants to obstruct the legal process.

Reacting to the verdict, Hon. Aleke expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision and praised the judge’s handling of the case.

“I am convinced of the court’s competence and the judge’s fair administration of justice. I urge other courts to follow this example, as the judiciary is the last hope for ordinary citizens,” Aleke stated.

Dr. Ezekwesili Calls For Probe As Kyari Denies Foreign Plant Ownership Amid Dangote Controversy

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has called for an independent audit to investigate why the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) capped its investment in the Dangote Petroleum Refinery at 7.2% instead of the planned 20%.

Advertorial

This call came as NNPC’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, denied owning a blending plant outside Nigeria amid ongoing controversies surrounding the Dangote refinery.

Ezekwesili, speaking through her official X handle, emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the Dangote refinery-NNPC saga.

She expressed concerns over the murky details emerging from both parties and urged for a full investigation.

Advertorial

“How can a project that by all definitions attained the stature of a ‘national interest project’ be marred in this depth of embarrassing controversy that is playing out in the full glare of the local and international investing community?” Ezekwesili questioned.

She recalled that the Nigerian government had previously announced borrowing $3.3 billion from Afriexim-Bank to acquire a stake in the Dangote refinery.

Advertorial

Ezekwesili also highlighted the long-standing opacity of the NNPC, which led to the establishment of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) during her tenure as Minister of Education.

She urged President Bola Tinubu to use NEITI to launch an independent audit of the Dangote refinery-NNPC transaction to provide clarity to the public.

Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, recently revealed that NNPC’s investment in his refinery was only 7.2%, not the speculated 20%.

Dangote explained that although an agreement for 20% was made, NNPC did not pay the balance, leading to their reduced stake.

In a related development, Mele Kyari denied allegations that he owns a blending plant outside Nigeria.

Advertorial

These allegations arose from Dangote’s claim that some NNPC officials own blending plants in Malta, which Dangote suggested were undermining the local production of petroleum products.

Kyari clarified on his X handle that he does not own or operate any business outside Nigeria, except for a local mini-agric venture.

Advertorial

He also stated he is unaware of any NNPC employees owning such blending plants.

Kyari assured the public that any NNPC official found to be involved in such activities would face sanctions.

The controversy deepened following allegations by the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Farouk Ahmed, who claimed that diesel produced by the Dangote refinery had higher sulphur content than imported.

Amaechi Warns Rivers APC Against Inviting Him To Meetings, Political Allegiance Unclear

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is uncertain about the current political status of former governor Rotimi Amaechi.

Chief Tony Okocha, Chairman of the APC Caretaker Committee in Rivers, shared this during a briefing at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday.

Advertorial

Amaechi, who finished second in the 2022 APC primary that nominated Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2023 presidential election, has been notably absent from political activities.

Despite his previous role as Minister of Transportation, Amaechi did not participate in the party’s campaign for the general elections last year.

Advertorial

When asked if Amaechi remains an active APC member, Okocha responded, “I was Chief of Staff to Rotimi Amaechi. Recall that at one point, he got into law school and from the one year in law school, he became incommunicado. After the presidential primary election, he disappeared into thin air. So, whether he is still a party member or not, I wouldn’t know because all the meetings we called, he didn’t show up.”

“For example, we called a meeting for all the former governors and ministers. He sent a message to the party secretary, warning him never to contact him about party matters again. So, when you meet him, ask him where he belongs. For me, I don’t know where he belongs.”

Advertorial

Regarding whether former governor and current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike influences the Rivers State APC, Okocha clarified that Wike is not a member of the APC and does not influence its decisions.

Attempts to reach Amaechi for comments were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.

Immigration Officer Suspended Over Drug Trafficking Charges

“The Service wishes to inform the public that the officer in question has since been subjected to internal processes and placed under suspension following the allegation of his involvement in the case in May 2024,” Udo stated.

US Presidency: Kamala Harris Leads Trump In First Poll After Biden’s Exit

Vice President Kamala Harris is now leading former President Donald Trump in a national poll, one of the first conducted since President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign.

Advertorial

The Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted over the two days following Biden’s announcement on Sunday, shows Harris ahead by two points, 44% to 42%.

Previously, Harris and Trump were tied at 44% in last week’s poll.

Harris, the leading candidate for the Democratic nomination, has gained significant endorsements, donations, and pledged delegates.

Despite this, she narrowly trails Trump in a separate survey also released on Tuesday. Both polls’ results fall within their margins of error.

These new polls come after the Republican National Convention, where Trump accepted the party’s nomination, and Biden’s withdrawal from the race.

Harris’s strong performance in these polls indicates she has countered the usual post-convention boost that candidates typically experience.

Advertorial

A PBS News/NPR/Marist poll conducted on Monday shows Trump slightly ahead of Harris, 46% to 45%, among registered voters, with 9% undecided.

When including third-party candidates or independents, Trump and Harris are tied at 42%.

Notably, the PBS News survey reveals that 87% of Americans believe Biden made the right decision to drop out, a sentiment shared across party and generational lines.

Advertorial

A plurality (41%) think Biden’s exit increases the Democrats’ chances in November, while 24% believe it decreases their odds, and 34% see no impact.

These polls were conducted in the wake of Trump surviving an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally on July 13.

Currently, Trump holds a narrow 1.6-point lead over Harris according to RealClearPolitics’ average of recent polls.
