BREAKING: Tinubu Begs Nigerians To Cancel Planned ‘EndBadGovernance’ Protest

President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to cancel the ‘EndBadGovernance’ protest planned for next month, appealing for patience as the government addresses their concerns.

Information Minister Mohammed Idris conveyed the President’s message after a meeting with select State House correspondents on Tuesday.

Advertorial

“Mr President does not see any need for the planned protest. He’s asked them to shelve that plan and await the government’s response to all their pleas,” Idris said.

The protest, organized against economic hardship and gaining momentum on social media, is scheduled to take place across all states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, in August.

The organizers of the protest remain anonymous.

Advertorial

Nigeria has been grappling with severe inflation and an economic crisis, exacerbated by the government’s recent policies of removing petrol subsidies and unifying forex windows, leading to a sharp rise in the prices of food and basic commodities.

The Federal Government, through the National Orientation Agency (NOA), the Nigeria Police Force, and the House of Representatives, has cautioned against the planned demonstration.

Advertorial

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and embattled Senator Ali Ndume have urged the President to address the grievances of the discontented citizens, predominantly youths.

Additionally, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga warned on Saturday that the planned protest could escalate into the kind of destruction of assets witnessed during the EndSARS protests against police brutality and extrajudicial killings in October 2020.

Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi, representing the Imo-East Senatorial District, has announced his defection from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Onyewuchi, who won his seat in the 2023 senatorial election under the LP banner, cited internal divisions and crises within the Labour Party as reasons for his departure.

Advertorial

In his letter of defection, Onyewuchi expressed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“This decision is due to the intractable division and crisis in the Labour Party that sponsored my election into the senate. We give our unflinching support to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and, of course, support his administration aimed at achieving sustainable development for our country,” the letter read.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Onyewuchi’s defection letter on the Senate floor on Tuesday, with Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is also the chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) and a former senator, present in the chamber.

Plans To Replicate Kenya Protest Will Be Resisted, IGP Warns

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, issued a stern warning on Tuesday against any attempts to incite violence under the guise of replicating the recent protests in Kenya.

Advertorial

The caution came during a strategic meeting held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja with top police officers, including Commissioners of Police, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs), and Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs).

Last month, Kenya witnessed significant protests sparked by policies deemed anti-masses, leading to demonstrations at the parliament and other strategic locations.

Advertorial

These protests resulted in notable reforms, including a cabinet reshuffle.

In Nigeria, groups are mobilizing under the theme #EndBadGovernance, drawing inspiration from the Kenyan protests.

However, IGP Egbetokun emphasized that any attempt to engage in violent protests would be met with firm resistance from the police.

Advertorial

“Our position is that the proposed violent protests are ill-advised and should be jettisoned fortuitously,” Egbetokun stated.

“We have the responsibility to protect properties and everyone, irrespective of their race, color, ethnicity, or tribe, who are lawfully embarking on their daily activities. We will not sit back and fold our arms to watch violent activities unleash violence on our peaceful communities or destroy any of our national critical infrastructure and assets again.”

Advertorial

Egbetokun recalled the trauma experienced by the police during the last #EndSARS protests, which led to significant destruction of public assets and loss of lives.

“The last #EndSARS protest led to one-tenth destruction of public assets, including police stations, courts, and transport infrastructure, and the loss of several lives,” he said.

“Tales of sorrow, tears, and blood followed what was supposedly intended to be a well-intentioned exercise.”

Advertorial

The IGP revealed that background checks on many organizers and sponsors of the current protest revealed that they are not residing in Nigeria, suggesting they aim to instigate crisis in the country.

He reiterated the police’s commitment to upholding the right to peaceful protest while ensuring these protests do not escalate into violence or disorder.

Egbetokun assured that measures are in place to apprehend any individuals or groups attempting to disguise themselves as protesters to incite violence.

Advertorial

“We have mapped out plans to ensure that no individual or group succeeds in fostering a reign of terror and anarchy on other law-abiding Nigerians,” he said.

“Consequently, I want to seize this opportunity to sound a serious warning to hoodlums who may want to take laws into their own hands in the name of protests.”

The police chief concluded by stressing the importance of maintaining peace and security and urged potential protesters to abandon any plans for violent demonstrations.

Just In: Tinubu Urges Reps To Amend Police Act Regarding IGP’s Tenure

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged the House of Representatives to amend the Nigeria Police Act, aligning it with Section 58 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

The proposed amendment focuses on the appointment and tenure of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Advertorial

Specifically, it seeks to modify the Nigeria Police Act, 2020, to allow the appointed IGP to serve the full term specified in their appointment letter.

The amendment proposes the addition of a new subsection (8A) to Section 18 of the Principal Act: “Notwithstanding the provisions of sub-section (8) of this section, any person appointed to the office of Inspector-General of Police shall remain in office until the end of the term stipulated in the letter of appointment in line with the provisions of Section 7(6) of this Act.”

The bill has successfully passed its second reading and has been referred to the Committee on the Whole.

Under the current Act, an officer must have at least four years of service to be eligible for the IGP position.

However, this requirement was not considered in the recent appointment of Kayode Egbetokun as IGP, who is set to retire in a few months.

Ousted Niger President, Bazoum Remains Detained One Year After Coup

One year after being deposed in a military coup, Niger’s former president Mohamed Bazoum remains in strict detention in Niamey, facing the prospect of a trial that concerns his supporters.

Background of the Coup:

Bazoum was overthrown on July 26, 2023, by General Abdourahamane Tiani, the head of his presidential guard. Elected in 2021, Bazoum has not resigned and continues to assert his legitimacy as president of the Sahelian country.

Advertorial

Detention Conditions:

Since the coup, Bazoum and his wife, Hadiza, have been held at the presidential palace in Niamey.

His last public appearance was on August 19, 2023, during a visit by a Nigerian mediator. Conditions worsened in October when the military accused him of attempting to escape, a claim his lawyers dispute.

Bazoum’s phone has been confiscated, and only his doctor is allowed to visit twice a week. Despite these harsh conditions, Bazoum remains resolute.

Advertorial

“According to him, they are physically fine. Their spirits are very high. The president is committed to continuing his resistance,” said Hamid N’Gade, Bazoum’s communications advisor.

A source close to him praised Bazoum’s courage and commitment to democracy.

In January, Bazoum’s son, Salem, who had been detained with his parents, was provisionally released and has since relocated to Togo.

Military Accusations:

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court of Justice ordered Bazoum’s release in mid-December, but the ruling has not been honored.

Niger has since withdrawn from ECOWAS, and last month, the Court of State, created by the ruling military, lifted Bazoum’s presidential immunity.

Advertorial

Bazoum faces charges of “conspiracy to attack the security and authority of the state” and “treason,” accused of seeking support for armed intervention during the coup from French President Emmanuel Macron and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

“This court has no legitimacy. These people were appointed by a putschist who was never sworn in,” said Mohamed Seydou Diagne, one of Bazoum’s lawyers.

Possible Trial:

The removal of Bazoum’s immunity paves the way for a trial, though no date has been set.

Potential sentences are severe, with treason carrying the death penalty and plotting against the state potentially leading to life imprisonment.

A trial could provide Bazoum the opportunity to speak publicly for the first time since the coup.

“This is an exceptional jurisdiction that does not meet any of the fundamental guarantees of the right to a fair trial,” said Diagne. “We do not accept sham trials,” he added, emphasizing the determination of the ruling military to convict Bazoum.

Advertorial

Support for Bazoum:

Initially, many Western leaders demanded Bazoum’s immediate release.

ECOWAS imposed economic sanctions on Niger’s ruling military and even threatened military intervention to restore Bazoum.

However, the intervention did not occur, and sanctions were lifted in February.

Recent months have seen fewer international calls for Bazoum’s release.

Advertorial

“He is under unacceptable pressure from the junta, which has taken him hostage. We are worried about the lifting of his immunity and the legal sham that is likely to follow,” said a French diplomatic source. The International Monetary Fund, which has resumed aid to Niger, declined to comment on Bazoum’s situation.

Rebel movements in Niger demanding Bazoum’s return to power have recently claimed responsibility for attacks on a major oil pipeline.

Police Arrest Suspect For Murdering Motorcyclist

A 23-year-old man, Daniel Edem Okon, from Ibiono Ibom local government area in Akwa Ibom State, has confessed to killing a commercial motorcyclist, Saviour Anthony Effiong, and burying him in a shallow grave.

Speaking at the police headquarters in Ikot AkpanAbia, Uyo, Okon revealed that he stabbed Effiong, 45, to death with a knife to steal and sell his motorcycle.

Advertorial

Okon was apprehended during a stop-and-search operation while attempting to find a buyer for the stolen motorcycle.

While parading Okon alongside other criminal suspects, including 20 suspected vandals, the Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara, advised commercial motorcyclists to avoid taking passengers to isolated areas at night.

Advertorial

He disclosed that Okon and an accomplice, Samaila Salisu, were stopped by officers on patrol at the Timber Market in Uyo.

During interrogation, Okon confessed to the murder and led the police to the shallow grave where Effiong’s decomposed body was exhumed and later identified by his family.

Additionally, Ayilara provided updates on other recent criminal activities in the state.

He reported the dismantling of a notorious kidnapping syndicate led by Ubong Effiong Archibong, also known as “Condiment,” responsible for multiple kidnappings and murders.

The police recovered firearms and ammunition from a private mortuary used as the syndicate’s armory in Ekeya, Okobo L.G.A.

Advertorial

In another operation, police arrested several suspects involved in theft and vandalism.

Engr. Udofia Jonah and six others were apprehended for stealing 61 armored doors and 42 timbers from the Ibom Tropicana Complex warehouse.

Vandals Napiu Ibrahim, Melon Selitima, and Abdul Abubbakar were caught dismantling high-tension electric cables in Eastern Obolo.

Advertorial

Furthermore, four suspects, Ugwem Ijah Nteilie, Frank Frank, Morris Possible, and Nura Idris, were arrested for burglarizing Eastern Obolo General Hospital, stealing air conditioners, plasma televisions, and refrigerators.

Police also busted a syndicate from Rivers State that targeted electric transformers and communication masts in Akwa Ibom, recovering tools and vehicles used in the crimes.

Court Rejects Ortom’s Appeal To Stop Financial Probe

A Makurdi High Court, led by Justice Tertsea Asue, has denied former Benue governor Samuel Ortom’s application for permission to appeal a previous ruling.

The ruling in question dismissed Ortom’s ex parte motion aimed at preventing Governor Hyacinth Alia from investigating him.

Advertorial

The court also refused Ortom’s request for an interlocutory injunction to halt proceedings until the main case is resolved.

The case proceeded with the hearing of a motion on notice for the substantive suit.

Ortom’s counsel, Oba Maduabuchi, SAN, filed for leave to appeal the ruling that lifted the order and sought to stay further proceedings.

However, Mohammed Ndarani, SAN, representing the 7th, 8th, and 9th respondents, opposed this application, arguing that there was no case warranting an appeal.

Advertorial

He highlighted that the issue of jurisdiction must be prioritized as it is fundamental to the adjudication process.

Ndarani pointed out that jurisdictional challenges take precedence, except in cases of contempt or when correcting an order made without jurisdiction.

He requested the court to address the motion for judicial review and the respondents’ preliminary objections, asserting that the plaintiff’s actions did not meet legal standards.

Advertorial

The 3rd respondent, State Attorney General Fidelis Mnyim, echoed this stance, noting that Ortom had not served the necessary applications and thus had no case before the court.

Consequently, the court upheld the respondents’ arguments, instructing Ortom to move his application for an extension of time to file for judicial review.

The court has adjourned the matter to July 30, 2024, to deliberate on the legitimacy of Ortom’s application.

Advertorial

This development follows Ortom’s legal challenge against the state government’s authority to investigate his administration’s finances.

Governor Alia established two panels in February to probe the state’s financial and asset management under Ortom’s tenure.

Ortom contends that the state’s Auditor-General had already audited the accounts and submitted the report to the Benue State House of Assembly, as required by the Constitution.

Advertorial

He argues that this new investigation constitutes a duplicate effort alongside an ongoing Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) inquiry into the same matters.
