The Kano Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has sacked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, declaring the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the March 18 election.

While Nasir Gawuna, his APC rival congratulated him, the party proceeded to court.

On Wednesday, the three-man panel ordered withdrawal of certificate of return which INEC presented to Governor Yusuf and directed a certificate of return to be issued to Gawuna.

The court deducted 165,663 votes from Gov Yusuf total as invalid votes, stating that the ballot papers (165,663) were not stamped or signed and therefore declared invalid.

All three grounds of the petition were resolved in favour of APC.

The grounds are Membership of Gov Yusuf of NNPP; non compliance with the Electoral Act and total lawful votes (Invalid ballot papers used in the election).

NNPP has kicked against the judgement, vowing to challenge it at the Appeal Court.

The judges were absent in court as they delivered their verdict through Zoom.

IPC Condemns Police Attack On Journalists Covering Kano Tribunal

The International Press Centre (IPC) Centre for Safety and Protection of Journalists (I-CSPJ), has frowned at the attack on journalists covering the Kano State Governorship Election petition tribunal.

Two journalists, Salim Umar Ibrahim of Daily Trust and BBC Hausa Reporter, Zahraddeen Lawal, were harassed by the men of the Nigerian Police Force at the venue of the tribunal, destroying their working tools.

Press Freedom Officer at I-CSPJ, Melody Akinjiyan, in a statement on Wednesday, quoted the Executive Director of IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, as saying that the unwarranted attacks on journalists on legitimate duty is dangerous to the nation’s democracy and a major threat to press freedom.

Advertorial

IPC said that the report has it that the Police who were on duty asked the journalists to move 10 meters away from the Court premises and in the process, some of them pounced on them, alleging that they were taking pictures.

He said: “IPC’s Centre for Safety and Protection of Journalists (I-CSPJ), is extremely dismayed by the reported police attack on some journalists who were in the court to cover the sitting of the Kano Governorship Election petition tribunal, today Wednesday, September 20, 2023.

“While some went after BBC reporter trying to seize his phone, others held Salim Ibrahim of Daily Trust and forcefully collected his phone, damaging the screen.

“The unwarranted attacks on journalists on legitimate duty is dangerous to our democracy and a major threat to press freedom. Such act violates the fundamental human rights of the journalists.

“We urge the men of the Nigerian Police Force to be mindful of actions they take against journalists and not continually create an environment where journalists would be afraid to work and discharge their duties effectively and efficiently.

“I-CSPJ therefore calls on the Kano State Commissioner of Police to take adequate and swift measures to bring to book those who assaulted the journalists while putting in place machinery to compensate the affected journalists for this inhumane treatment.

“We also call on the Nigeria Police Force to step up the training of its officers to be more respectful and courteous in relating with journalists and other media professionals. They should be reminded constantly that the primary responsibility of the Police is the protection of citizens including journalists,” he said.

BREAKING: Over 145 Nurses In Enugu State Protest Unpaid Six Months Salaries, Give 15 Days Ultimatum

Enugu state chapter of the National Association Of Nigeria Nurses And Midwives, NANNM, has given the Management of the Enugu state Teaching Hospital, parklane, a 15 day ultimatum to clear the six months salaries of one hundred and fifty (150) nurses employed by the state’s owned teaching hospital.

This was contained in a letter sighted by Daily Gazette which was addressed to the Chief Medical Director, ESUT Teaching Hospital parklane, on Monday and signed by the State Chairman of the group, Comrade Innocent Ejike Ezema and the secretary, Comrade Joy Laeticia Chukwu.

Advertorial

The letter reads in parts;

“Sequel to the acute shortage of nurses in the hospital due to constant relocation of our nurses to overseas and federal establishments in search of greener pastures, the hospital management sought for and got the approval of Enugu State Government for the employment of 150 nurses through an open advertisement. The interested candidates submitted their applications and interview was conducted and successful nurses were selected and offered appointment letters.”

“These nurses resumed work since March 2023 and since then, all of them have been consistently punctual at work. Some had to leave their families and relocated to Enugu and have been working without payment of any salary.”

Advertorial

“In May 2023, there was Bio data capturing exercise during which they were captured together with other health workers who were employed including the Doctors, but to our utmost dismay, the Doctors were selected and paid leaving the nurses to suffer even till now. Their condition of work has become unbearable such that many of them are heavily indebted and can no longer borrow to come to work.”

“In the light of this distress, they have consistently planned to protest but were prevailed upon to exercise patience for the new government to act on it. Recall that these nurses were employed to rescue the hospital from the acute shortage of nurses that was already jeopardizing the nursing care services very seriously ”

“Our Prayers therefore are:
1. That the hospital management should pay the newly employed nurses (150) their salaries without further delay.

2. That these salaries should be paid completely with arrears of six months for which they have worked and subsequently be paid alongside with the older staff”

“Be notified therefore that after 15 days from the day this ultimatum was served and hospital management has not paid all of the 150 nurses, the entire nurses will withdraw their services as injury to one of us is injury to all.”

Expectations High As Enugu Governorship Tribunal Delivers Judgement On Edeoga’s Petition Against Mba

The judiciary is undoubtedly in the eye of the storm and must do everything within it’s powers to redeem it’s age long batted image by upholding justice without pandering to pressure from politicians.

The Enugu state governorship election Petitions Tribunal will on Thursday, 21 September, 2023 deliver judgment on the petition filed by the Labour Party governorship candidate in the 2023 election, Barr. Chijioke Edeoga challenging the declaration and return of Mr. Peter Mba of the PDP.

Parties in the case had on August 16, adopted their final written addresses.

Daily Gazette correspondent gathered that there are mixed feelings across the state as Enugu electorates await the verdict of the three man tribunal headed by Honourable Justice Akano.

While the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC is the first respondent, Peter Mba and PDP were listed as second and third respondents respectively.

The electoral umpire had declared Mr. Mba winner of the keenly contested March 18 governorship election in the state.

Barr. Chijioke Edeoga and Peter Mba

But announcing the results four days after, the state’s returning officer, Prof. Iwe said he was under authority to declare the results.

Daily Gazette recall that the Enugu governorship results was taken to Abuja where over 30 thousand votes purportedly gotten by the PDP from Nkanu East LGA was slashed to about 15 thousand votes without any reason from the Abuja headquarters of INEC.

Dissatisfied with the outcome of the election which was largely described as electoral heist perpetuated by INEC in connivance with PDP, Barr. Chijioke Edeoga and Labour Party approached the Election Petitions tribunal seeking redress.

Edeoga said Mba was at the time of the election not constitutionally qualified to contest having presented a forged certificate of national service, NYSC, to INEC.

Other issues in the petition include allegation of over voting especially in Nkanu East LGA, substantial non compliance with the electoral act, non use of BVAS in some polling units of Owo ward, Ugbawka ward 1 and 2, computational errors, among others.

INEC had declared that Peter Mba of the PDP secured a total of 160,895 votes to defeat his closest rival, Barr. Chijioke Edeoga of the Labour Party who pulled a total of 157,552 votes.

Tribunal Gives Verdict On Petition Against Ex-Taraba Speaker

The National and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Jalingo, Taraba State capital, yesterday affirmed the election of former speaker of the House of Assembly, Hon. Peter Abel Diah, who also represents Mbamga state constituency.

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Emmanuel Bongo, and his party had challenged Diah’s victory at the tribunal.

The petitioner asked the tribunal to nullify the election over non compliance to the electoral process by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the exercise.

Advertorial

He also claimed the former speaker was not a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as of the time the party (APC) nominated Diah to participate in the election.

The three member panel led by Justice Benson Ogbu during his ruling dismissed the petition, stating that “the two petitions collapsed on failure of proof by the petitioner.”

Ogbu, while reading the judgement, stated that during the cross examination, counsel to Diah were able to prove to the tribunal that Diah was an authentic member of the APC as of the time of the party’s primary election.

He also said Bongo and the PDP failed to prove to the tribunal the evidence of non compliance by INEC during the state assembly election.

In his reaction, counsel to the PDP, Barr. Joseph Oguche, said he would study the details of the judgment and consult his client for further actions.

Counsel to the defendant, Barr. Festus Idekpe hailed the three man panel for giving a straight forward judgment adding that it would stand the test of time.
