Biden, Trump Set Rules For First 2024 Election Debate

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have established the format for their initial 2024 election debate, scheduled for June 27, CNN announced on Saturday.

The 90-minute event will feature mutable microphones and will be conducted without a studio audience.

Advertorial

CNN detailed that the debate format, agreed upon by both campaigns, includes the use of uniform podiums, with their positions decided by a coin toss.

The candidates’ microphones will remain muted except when it is their designated time to speak.

No props or notes will be permitted on stage. Each candidate will be allowed only a pen, a pad of paper, and a bottle of water.

The debate will take place in Atlanta, Georgia, and will include two commercial breaks during which campaign staff cannot interact with their respective candidates.

Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, both prominent CNN news anchors, will moderate the debate, ensuring strict adherence to timing and maintaining a civilized discourse.

The agreement also covers a second debate on September 10, to be hosted by ABC.

The previous debates in 2020 between Biden and Trump were marked by significant interruptions and heated exchanges, with Biden at one point famously telling Trump, “Will you shut up, man?”

This debate format aims to foster a more orderly and respectful exchange between the candidates.

Ramaphosa Re-elected As South Africa’s President Following Historic Coalition

Cyril Ramaphosa has been re-elected as South Africa’s president after the governing African National Congress (ANC) formed an unprecedented coalition with opposition parties.

The coalition includes Ramaphosa’s ANC, the Democratic Alliance (DA), and several smaller parties.

Advertorial

This strategic alliance was necessitated by the ANC losing its majority in the recent elections, marking a significant shift in South African politics after the party’s 30-year dominance since the end of apartheid.

In the national assembly, which has 400 seats, the ANC secured only 159, as reported by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

The DA won 87 seats, and the uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party, supported by former President Jacob Zuma, obtained 58 seats.

Advertorial

Ramaphosa emphasized the need for unity and cooperation among political leaders to address the expectations of the South African people.

“Our citizens demand that we work together to fulfill their needs,” he stated.

Following two weeks of intense negotiations with opposition parties, a consensus to re-elect Ramaphosa was reached.

In his victory speech, Ramaphosa praised the coalition and urged all parties to focus on the welfare of South Africans.

DA leader John Steenhuisen expressed optimism about the coalition’s potential to create positive change.

“We have a unique opportunity to write a new chapter for South Africa, one that promises collaboration and progress,” he said.

Ramaphosa is anticipated to integrate members from the coalition parties into his cabinet, signaling a new era of collaborative governance in South Africa.

IGP Rejects PSC’s List Of Constable Candidates Amidst Recruitment Controversy

The Nigeria Police Force has voiced significant concerns over the recent police constable recruitment exercise, citing allegations of corruption and irregularities.

The Police Service Commission (PSC) had published a list of successful candidates, which has now come under intense scrutiny.

Advertorial

Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force spokesperson, revealed on Saturday that the police were alarmed to find discrepancies in the published list.

Names of candidates who had successfully passed the screening stages mysteriously disappeared, prompting a thorough investigation by the police authorities.

Adejobi, an assistant commissioner of police, noted that numerous complaints from candidates alleging corrupt practices in the recruitment process led to a detailed examination of the PSC’s list.

Advertorial

He highlighted that the police have officially distanced themselves from the list, stating it included individuals who had failed the computer-based test (CBT), physical screening, or both. Additionally, some candidates disqualified due to medical issues were inexplicably included in the list.

“The most troubling aspect is the allegation of financial dealings and corrupt practices, which resulted in the shortlisting of unqualified and untrainable individuals,” Adejobi stated.

In response to these findings, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun sent a “letter of objection” to the PSC Chairperson on Monday.

The letter outlined the discrepancies discovered in the list, emphasizing that while the PSC has the authority to recruit for the police, this power does not extend to enlisting unqualified individuals.

Adejobi stressed that the Nigerian police, not the PSC, would ultimately suffer from the recruitment of unqualified candidates.

“The Nigeria Police Force takes exception to this unpleasant development and calls for a total review of the process to ensure the recruitment of qualified, competent, trainable, and productive individuals, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for police reform,” he said.

The police spokesperson also expressed concern for the candidates who underwent rigorous screening processes, vowing that the police would ensure a thorough review to uphold the integrity of the recruitment exercise.

The controversy highlights the ongoing challenges in reforming Nigeria’s police recruitment processes and underscores the need for transparency and accountability to build a competent and effective police force.
