Peter Obi Warns Of Nigeria’s Decline Into State Capture On Democracy Day

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in last year’s elections, has slammed Nigeria’s political condition, asserting that the country has devolved into a dictatorship and state capture.

In a series of posts on his X handle on Wednesday, Obi reflected on this year’s June 12 Democracy Day commemoration, expressing concerns over the nation’s deviation from true democratic principles.

Obi lamented that leadership failures have led to systemic corruption, widespread insecurity, suppression of free speech, escalating poverty, and severe hunger and hardship. He questioned the authenticity of Nigeria’s democracy as the country marks 25 years of its democratic journey.

“Today, as we celebrate Democracy Day, we must ask ourselves: Are we truly democratic?” Obi stated. “It is crucial to re-examine our progress over the past quarter-century. Democracy should be government of, by, and for the people, but we have drifted into classical state capture, depriving the citizens instead of benefiting them.”

Obi emphasized that the absence of genuine democracy has resulted in significant issues, including systemic corruption, high insecurity, restricted freedoms, and rising poverty and hardship. He argued that true democracy prioritizes citizens’ rights, lawfulness, leader accountability, and the welfare of the populace, especially the impoverished.

Highlighting Nigeria’s poor performance in various global indices, Obi noted, “We score low on the Global Democracy Index with a score of 4.23. Our Corruption Perception Index ranks us 145th out of 180 countries, and we stand at 120th out of 142 on the World Justice Project’s Rule of Law Index. Additionally, the 2024 World Press Freedom Index ranks Nigeria 112th out of 180 countries, indicating significant challenges for journalists.”

Obi urged that the June 12 commemoration should prompt a recommitment to true democracy. “On June 12, 1993, we collectively voted for democracy. Today, we must defend it. I call on everyone to respect and protect democratic institutions, adhere to laws, be accountable to the people, and uphold responsible governance as outlined in the constitution.”

He concluded by stressing the need for Nigeria to return to a democratic path that truly serves its people, ensuring their rights and welfare are prioritized..

State Creation: Adada Movement To Hold Emergency Meeting

The Adada State Movement, a group advocating for the creation of a new state in southeastern Nigeria, has called an emergency special meeting involving traditional rulers, leaders, and National and State Assembly members from the proposed Adada State.

Scheduled for Sunday, June 16, 2024, the meeting will take place at Adada House in Nsukka at 12 noon.

Advertorial

In a circular released to Daily Gazette by the group’s Publicity Secretary, Barr. Pauly Eze, it was emphasized that the meeting is crucial for addressing current issues related to the creation of Adada State.

“The Tactical Committee of the movement discussed these issues in an emergency meeting and deemed it necessary to involve all stakeholders,”

“The presence of all invitees is considered indispensable to tackle the current developments with urgency and unity of purpose.” the circular added.

The proposed Adada State, which aims to address regional imbalances and enhance local governance, has garnered significant support among local communities and political leaders.

Adada is the oldest yet to be realised demand for creation in Nigeria. It was first made in 1983 by Yunusa Kaltungo, a federal lawmaker from Bauchi State, as a result of what he perceived as imbalance in state creation in the country, especially in the South-East.

In 1996, the same request was represented to the Mbanefo Panel on State and Local Government Creation and Boundary Adjustment.

However, for obvious reasons, Ebonyi State was created, making states in the South-East five.

The meeting will focus on strategizing the next steps, addressing any hurdles, and consolidating efforts to present a united front in the push for statehood.

Participants are expected to discuss the recent developments in the movement, including responses from the federal government and the National Assembly, the legal framework for state creation, and the socio-economic benefits of creating Adada State.

The meeting will also provide a platform for stakeholders to voice their concerns and suggestions.

The Adada State Movement has been actively campaigning for the new state, arguing that it will bring about equitable development and improved administrative efficiency in the region.

With the involvement of traditional rulers and legislators, the movement aims to strengthen its case and mobilize broader support.

Outcome of the meeting is anticipated to significantly influence the future direction of the Adada State Movement and its efforts toward achieving statehood.

Reps Member Opposes Inclusion In Proposed Orlu State

The proposed creation of Orlu State in the South-East has faced opposition from Princess Chinwe Nnabuife, the representative of Orumba North and South Federal Constituency.

In a statement released on Monday, Nnabuife clarified her position, emphasizing that her constituents reject being part of the new state.

Advertorial

Nnabuife explained that the bill for the creation of Orlu State, sponsored by Hon. Ugochinyere Michael Ikeagwuonu, has advanced through its first reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill, identified as HB1430, includes the Umunze Community within its proposed boundaries.

However, Nnabuife stated that she and the people of Umunze were not consulted and do not support this bill.

“I want to set the record straight: while I have no objection to the creation of new states, this particular bill was not discussed or deliberated with me or my constituents,” Nnabuife said.

“The people of Orumba North and South have unequivocally rejected the idea of being included in the proposed Orlu State. Umunze, the heart and capital of Orumba South, has always been and will remain an integral part of Anambra State.”

Nnabuife stressed her commitment to representing the interests of her constituents and ensuring their wishes are respected.

She highlighted the deep historical, cultural, and administrative ties of Umunze to Anambra State, which she believes should not be disregarded by the proposed bill.

“Any attempt to alter the status of our constituency without proper consultation and agreement is unacceptable,” she asserted.

“Umunze in Orumba North/Orumba South Federal Constituency remains steadfastly a part of Anambra State.”

The statement aims to clarify any misconceptions and affirm Nnabuife’s stance against the inclusion of her constituency in the proposed Orlu State.

Honourable Princess Chinwe Nnabuife represents Orumba North and South in the House of Representatives, Anambra State.

INEC Postpones Enugu Assembly Rerun Election For The Fourth Time, Gives Reasons

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of the rerun election for the Enugu South 1 State Constituency, citing security concerns as the primary reason.

Chukwuemeka Chukwu, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Enugu, informed the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday that the decision to cancel the election, initially rescheduled for June 8 following stakeholder consultations, was made last week due to safety considerations. A new date will be communicated in due course.

Advertorial

“Last week, we postponed the scheduled rerun election and informed all stakeholders, providing a clear reason for the postponement. However, I am dismayed by the spread of baseless rumours suggesting the election was secretly conducted,” Chukwu stated.

The election is the third attempt to conclude the Enugu South 1 State Constituency poll.

The Labour Party (LP) candidate, Barr. Bright Ngene, had been declared the winner of the March 18, 2023, election and sworn in, but the results were later nullified by a tribunal for being inconclusive.

On the scheduled election day, voters gathered at the polling units from as early as 7 a.m., only to find no INEC officials present.

Barr. Ngene, who visited the polling center, expressed his disappointment and said neither he nor his party was notified about the election’s postponement.

Seven Militants Killed As Military Raids IPOB Hideout In Abia

Nigerian troops have successfully neutralized multiple militants and bandits across several states, bolstering security in the affected regions.

In Abia State, troops raided a hideout of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the Arochukwu Local Government Area, where five soldiers had previously been killed during IPOB’s sit-at-home order on Biafra Heroes Day. During the raid, soldiers encountered three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by IPOB fighters.

Advertorial

Despite this, they overpowered the militants and recovered locally-fabricated weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades and an artillery gun.

One soldier sustained minor injuries but is currently recuperating. The successful raid represents a significant setback for IPOB elements operating in the area.

In Kaduna, troops on a two-day fighting patrol in the Kajuru and Kachia Local Government Areas engaged and killed five terrorists in a fierce battle at Dantarau.

The soldiers recovered a substantial cache of arms, including AK-47 rifles, a fabricated submachine gun, and various ammunition.

Additionally, two motorcycles and handheld radios were seized.

This operation significantly disrupted terrorist activities along the Maro-Enugu community axis, enhancing regional security.

Kaduna State Commissioner of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, confirmed the success of the operation and warned locals against providing medical aid to suspicious individuals.

Governor Uba Sani commended the military’s efforts and urged continued vigilance.

In Zamfara State, troops foiled a kidnap attempt along the Gusau-Tsafe-Funtua road in the Tsafe Local Government Area. Responding to a distress call, soldiers engaged the kidnappers in a shootout, killing two and rescuing four passengers from a Toyota Corolla.

The operation resulted in the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, ammunition, and the vehicle involved in the attempted abduction.

Nnamdi Kanu Heads To Appeal Court For Bail Reinstatement

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has appealed to the Court of Appeal to restore the bail previously granted to him by an Abuja Federal High Court.

Kanu’s appeal also challenges the appellate court’s decision to deny his transfer from the Department of State Services (DSS) facility to Kuje prison.

Advertorial

The bail, originally granted in 2017 on treasonable felony charges, was revoked when Kanu failed to appear as required.

Following his rearrest in Kenya and extradition to Nigeria in 2021, eight of the fifteen charges against him were dismissed by Justice Binta Nyako in April 2022.

The remaining charges were quashed by the Court of Appeal on October 13, 2022, which ordered Kanu’s release.

However, this release was stalled by an Appeal Court stay of execution on October 28, 2022, following a federal government appeal to the Supreme Court.

On December 15, 2023, the Supreme Court reversed the Appeal Court’s decision, mandating Kanu to resume his trial at the Federal High Court.

On May 20, 2024, Justice Nyako denied Kanu’s application to restore his bail, instead modifying counsel visitation conditions.

Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, contested this ruling on several grounds, arguing that the court erred in its assessment of the DSS detention conditions and its impact on Kanu’s right to a fair trial.

Ejimakor’s notice of appeal to the Court of Appeal, dated June 8, 2024, seeks to overturn the Federal High Court’s decision, restore Kanu’s bail under the original or revised terms, and transfer him to a more suitable place of custody.

He argues that the trial court misdirected itself by failing to recognize the hostile conditions at the DSS facility and the resulting miscarriage of justice.

Ejimakor further contends that the court wrongly held that no steps could be taken regarding Kanu’s bail until the outcome of the sureties’ appeal.

The appeal seeks orders to reinstate Kanu’s bail and provide an alternative place of custody to ensure a fair trial.

The Court of Appeal will now review the grounds and reliefs set out in Ejimakor’s notice, including reinstating Kanu’s bail and possibly remanding him to home detention or house arrest.
