BREAKING: CBN Revokes Banking License Of Heritage Bank

In a decisive move aimed at safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s financial system, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revoked the banking license of Heritage Bank Plc with immediate effect.

The action, executed under the authority vested in the CBN by Section 12 of the Banks and Other Financial Act (BOFIA) 2020, underscores the regulator’s commitment to maintaining a robust and stable financial environment in the country.

Advertorial

According to a statement signed by Hakama Sidi, the bank’s Ag. Director of Corporate Communications, the decision to revoke Heritage Bank’s license “was necessitated by the bank’s failure to comply with Section 12 (1) of BOFIA 2020.”

“Despite various supervisory measures prescribed by the CBN to address the bank’s financial challenges, Heritage Bank’s performance continued to deteriorate, posing a significant threat to financial stability.”

“Regrettably, the bank’s persistent decline in performance left the CBN with no choice but to take decisive action to protect public confidence in the banking system. Consequently, the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has been appointed as the liquidator of Heritage Bank in accordance with Section 12 (2) of BOFIA 2020.”

The CBN reassures the public that Nigeria’s financial system remains resilient and robust.

“The regulator remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the safety and soundness of the nation’s financial institutions.”

No Gaza Ceasefire Until Hamas Is Completely Destroyed, Says Netanyahu

Gaza conflict mediators urged Israel and Hamas on Saturday to finalize a ceasefire and hostage release deal outlined by US President Joe Biden.

Mediators argued that the deal would provide immediate relief to Gaza residents and hostages’ families.

Advertorial

Israel maintains that the war will not officially end as long as Hamas remains in power, casting doubt on the proposed truce, which has received preliminary approval from Hamas.

On Friday, Biden detailed Israel’s proposal, which includes a six-week ceasefire, a partial military withdrawal, and the release of some hostages. During this period, mediators would negotiate a permanent end to hostilities.

The US, Egypt, and Qatar have been working for months to broker a ceasefire, but success has been elusive.

Advertorial

Biden’s proposal also envisions a “day after” in Gaza without Hamas in control, though he did not specify how this would be achieved. Hamas has shown no signs of stepping down or disarming voluntarily.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office declared on Saturday that any notion of a permanent ceasefire before Hamas’ military and governing capabilities are dismantled is “a non-starter.”

Two coalition members also threatened to withdraw support if Netanyahu agreed to a ceasefire without destroying Hamas.

Hamas stated on Friday that it is ready to engage constructively but had not received the proposal’s details.

Senior official Mahmoud Mardawi insisted that any agreement must include the withdrawal of Israeli forces and a ceasefire.

Israel is willing to pause the war in exchange for hostages but plans to resume operations to neutralize Hamas.

Hamas seeks a deal that involves concrete steps from Israel, such as a full troop withdrawal.

A senior Biden administration official noted that differences between US and Israeli perspectives on Hamas’ future might depend on Egypt’s and Qatar’s influence over Hamas.

The conflict, which began on October 7 when Hamas-led fighters attacked southern Israel, has resulted in significant casualties and destruction.

Over 1,200 people were killed in Israel, and more than 250 were taken hostage. Israel’s subsequent military campaign in Gaza has led to widespread devastation, starvation, and the deaths of over 36,000 people, according to Palestinian health authorities. More than 290 Israeli soldiers have also been killed.

As public support in Israel shows signs of fatigue due to concern for the hostages, Benny Gantz, a centrist ex-general in Netanyahu’s emergency coalition, has threatened to withdraw if a post-war Gaza plan is not formed. However, Gantz acknowledged Biden’s efforts and called for the war cabinet to decide on the next steps.

Netanyahu’s National Security Adviser, Tzachi Hanegbi projected that the war might continue throughout 2024.

In the US, growing concern over civilian suffering in Gaza has increased pressure on Biden, who is seeking re-election.

In his Friday speech, Biden urged Israeli leaders to resist calls for an indefinite continuation of the war. Netanyahu, invited to address both houses of Congress, plans to present Israel’s perspective on the conflict.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid called on Netanyahu to agree to the ceasefire and hostage deal, pledging his party’s support even if some coalition factions oppose it. Lapid emphasized the importance of President Biden’s speech and the need for Israel to seize the opportunity for a deal.

Labour Party Calls On Military To Target Perpetrators, Not Civilians In Abia

The Labour Party leadership has urged the Nigerian Army to focus on apprehending the killers of five soldiers deployed to Abia State during the Biafran Day celebration, emphasizing the need to avoid harming innocent civilians.

This appeal was made in a statement issued on Sunday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh.

Advertorial

The call comes after an attack on Thursday, confirmed by the military, where gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) killed five soldiers in Abia State.

The attackers reportedly used three tinted Toyota Prado SUVs and launched a surprise assault from built-up areas around a checkpoint.

Condemning the brutal killing, Ifoh urged the military to target the actual perpetrators to prevent collateral damage to innocent and law-abiding citizens.

Advertorial

The Labour Party also praised Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, for his commitment to bringing the culprits to justice and for announcing a N25 million bounty on those responsible for the crime.

Ifoh stated, “While we commiserate with the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, and the entire military command on the unfortunate incident and pray for the repose of the souls of the gallant heroes, we are concerned by the military’s threat to avenge the soldiers’ deaths. We urge the military to be professional in their approach to avoid further loss of innocent lives.”

He continued, “Unknown gunmen, or whatever names they choose to bear, do not deserve to be spared. They have caused untold pain to the South East and deserve to be wiped out. However, the military’s response must be measured and targeted at these elements alone.”

Ifoh highlighted that Abia has been the most peaceful state in the South East due to the state government’s efforts to eliminate criminal elements over the past year. He urged the military not to let this incident reverse the progress made.

“The military’s threat to retaliate with overwhelming pressure on the group to ensure their total defeat is justified. However, it has the potential to cause a humanitarian crisis if the retaliation is indiscriminate. Reports from Aba and its environs are alarming, as youths and young men are reportedly fleeing the area for fear of their lives,” Ifoh added.

The Labour Party’s statement underscores the need for a targeted and professional response from the military to avoid escalating violence and causing further harm to innocent civilians.

Court Warns DSS Boss Of Imprisonment For Defying Order On Nnamdi Kanu’s Legal Rights

The legal team representing Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has initiated legal action against the Director General of the State Security Service (SSS), Yusuf Magaji Bichi.

The move follows allegations that Bichi has disobeyed a court order issued by the Federal High Court.

Advertorial

The lawyers accuse the DSS, of failing to comply with a mandate from Justice B.F.M. Nyako.

The order, issued on May 20, directed the DSS to provide Kanu’s lawyers with a suitable facility to prepare his defense in the case numbered FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015.

Justice Nyako, while rejecting Kanu’s bail application and his request for transfer to a Nigerian Custodial Centre, ordered the DSS to ensure Kanu had access to a secure and clean room for defense preparations.

Advertorial

The court stipulated that Kanu’s legal team should not exceed five members.

The court’s ruling explicitly stated: “An order is hereby made varying the condition of visitation to him in custody to 3 days a week. He is to be given a safe and ‘clean’ room at the present facility to prepare for his defense with his team of counsel not exceeding 5 in number. They should be allowed such facility that is required for the preparation of his defense and be allowed to take notes.”

Despite this directive, the DSS has allegedly failed to comply, prompting Kanu’s legal team to pursue committal proceedings against Bichi.

Advertorial

The court, through a Form 48 Notice of Consequences of Disobedience to the order, warned Bichi of the potential for imprisonment if found guilty of contempt of court.

This notice, filed on May 31, 2024, serves as a formal warning of the serious repercussions of defying the court’s order.

The notice read: “TAKE NOTICE that unless you obey the directives contained in this Order overleaf (by complying with the directives contained at paragraphs 2 & 3 of the said order), you will be guilty of contempt of Court and will be liable to be committed to prison.”
