Otti Offers N25 Million Bounty For Information On Killers Of Soldiers In Aba

In response to the recent killing of five soldiers in Abia State, Governor Alex Otti has announced a N25 million bounty for information leading to the capture of the attackers.

The incident occurred on Thursday, May 30, 2024, when unknown gunmen ambushed a military checkpoint at Obikabia Junction, Ogbor Hill, Aba.

Advertorial

The assailants killed five soldiers, seized their rifles, and set fire to two patrol vans and the checkpoint.

The Abia State government, through a statement by Commissioner for Information Prince Okey Kanu, condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, and the Military High Command.

The government also prayed for the peaceful repose of the soldiers who died in the line of duty.

The statement emphasized the government’s commitment to security and peace, declaring the attack a serious affront to its efforts to ensure safety in the state, especially in Aba, the economic hub.

Despite significant investments to improve infrastructure and attract investments, the government vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“To underscore its resolve, the State Government is offering a N25 million reward to anyone with useful information that could lead to the arrest of the criminals involved in the killings,” the statement read. It assured that all information provided would be treated with confidentiality to ensure the safety and cooperation of informants.

The government also praised the professionalism of the Nigerian Army officers in Abia and encouraged them to continue showing restraint and professionalism in their duties.

Governor Otti assured residents and businesses of their safety and urged them to continue their daily activities without fear.

Citizens were also encouraged to report any suspicious activities to security agencies.

The government reiterated its determination to resist any attempts to disrupt the peace and security of the state, stating that Abia would remain welcoming to law-abiding citizens and hostile to criminals.

Governor Otti’s administration is committed to collaborating with security agencies, traditional leaders, and community members to gather intelligence and apprehend those responsible for the heinous crime.

The government’s message was clear: any threats to the peace and security of Abia State will be met with decisive action.

National Assembly Considers Bill For Nigeria To Return To Regional Government

The National Assembly is currently reviewing a bill that proposes the reintroduction of regional government in Nigeria, with the aim of passing it into law by October 1, 2024.

The bill, circulating on social media under the title, “A Bill for an Act to Substitute the Annexure to Decree 24 of 1999 with a New Governance Model for the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” has garnered significant attention.

Advertorial

If passed, it would be known as the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria New Governance Model for Nigeria Act 2024.

The sponsors of the bill, whose identities remain undisclosed, argue that the current 1999 Constitution is not “autochthonous” because it did not originate from the deliberations and consensus of the Nigerian people.

They advocate for a new constitution that reflects the desires of Nigerians and suggest that the amendment be subject to a nationwide referendum.

Advertorial

The draft bill includes the following points:

Preliminaries:

– The current 1999 Constitution was imposed by the military government without the express consent of the Nigerian people.
– The proposed new constitution aims to establish a federal/regional system of government.
– Ethnic blocs within states will have the discretion to organize into provinces, divisions, and districts while controlling their affairs.

Substitution Clause:

– The National Assembly will use its powers to expunge the schedule attached to Decree 24 of 1999 (the current constitution) and replace it with a new governance model.
– This amendment will be subject to a yes or no vote in a referendum by the people of Nigeria.

Governance Structure:

– Nigeria will be a federation comprising regional territories and a Federal Capital Territory, known as the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
– The territorial jurisdiction will be based on international agreements.
– Every ethnic nationality in Nigeria has the right to self-determination and to establish institutions of government in their territories.
– Ethnic nationalities will have equitable representation in federal and regional governments.

The bill emphasizes the rights of ethnic nationalities to self-determination, self-government, and equitable representation.

It also defines an “Ethnic Nationality or People” as a group with a common culture, language, identity, and psychological makeup, inhabiting a specific territory.

The proposal, if enacted, would significantly alter Nigeria’s governance structure, aiming to decentralize power and enhance regional autonomy.

The National Assembly’s consideration of this bill reflects ongoing discussions about the need for constitutional reform and the desire for a governance model that better represents the Nigerian populace.

Sanusi, Bayero Lead Parallel Friday Prayers Amidst Tensions In Kano

The Kano State Police Command has praised residents for their peaceful conduct as Emirs Muhammad Sanusi II and Aminu Bayero held parallel Friday prayers in Kano, each laying claim to the throne.

Advertorial

The tension arose after Emir Sanusi was reinstated by Governor Abba Yusuf, while Emir Bayero is challenging his dethronement in court. Predictions of clashes between supporters of the two factions led the police to issue warnings against potential disturbances in the city.

Emir Sanusi led the Friday prayers at the Central Mosque, while Emir Bayero conducted his prayers at the Nasarawa Palace.

Despite the potential for conflict, the prayers proceeded without incident.

Commissioner of Police Usaini Gumel reported that the prayers were conducted peacefully across all 44 local government areas of the state.

“I am very pleased with the orderly manner in which residents conducted themselves before, during, and after the prayers without any unrest,” he said.

The Commissioner commended residents for their cooperation with the police, which ensured zero crime was recorded during the event.

He called on residents to maintain this spirit of cooperation to ensure continued peaceful coexistence in the state.

“This peaceful outcome is a testament to the effective collaboration between law enforcement and the community,” Commissioner Gumel noted.

“The police command looks forward to continued partnership in maintaining peace and order in the state.”

Protesters Demand Resignation Of APC Women Leader Over Alleged Misconduct

On Friday, scores of female protesters gathered at the All Progressives Congress (APC) headquarters in Abuja, demanding the resignation of the National Women Leader, Dr. Mary Alile-Idele.

The protesters accused Alile-Idele of negligence, prioritizing personal interests, and misappropriating parts of a donation of 24,000 wrappers from First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.

Advertorial

Carrying banners with messages such as “Enough is Enough,” “Mary Alile Resign Now,” and “APC Women Leader Must Go,” the protesters called on the First Lady and APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, to remove Alile-Idele for undermining female party members.

Dr. Mary Alile-Idele took over as the national women leader following the appointment of her predecessor, Dr. Betta Edu, as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation by President Bola Tinubu.

The demand for Alile-Idele’s resignation intensified two weeks after the First Lady, represented by Hajia Nana, wife of Vice President Kashim Shettima, presented bales of wrappers to Alile-Idele and state women leaders.

This presentation followed complaints that the president had neglected the women despite their support in his election victory.

Dr. Ganduje had urged the women leaders to distribute the fabrics fairly, but the protesters, led by Rebecca Sheneni, Coordinator of ‘Concerned APC Women,’ alleged that only 9,000 of the 24,000 wrappers were distributed.

Sheneni accused Alile-Idele of focusing more on only NGO’s agenda than on party matters, neglecting her responsibilities and engaging in political patronage.

“We, the Concerned APC Women Group, demand the immediate resignation of Mrs. Mary Alile-Idele, the National Women Leader of our party. She has shown incompetence and prioritizes her NGO over the party. The First Lady provided 24,000 wrappers, but only 9,000 were distributed. Where are the rest? How was someone with no political experience or party record chosen for this position? Her actions, including nominating her husband for a university governing council, show she prioritizes personal interests over the APC’s,” Sheneni stated.

However, Mrs. Patricia Okuebor-Benson, the women leader for Imo State, defended Alile-Idele, denying the allegations and claiming that all states had received their fabrics.

“I am hearing of this now. As I speak, the 36 state women leaders and the FCT are in Abuja having a meeting, and nobody has accused anyone of anything. I think somebody is sponsoring these women. Every state has received its fabrics,” Okuebor-Benson said.

When contacted, former Lagos lawmaker and women leader Jumoke Okoya-Thomas declined to comment, stating she was not aware of the situation and was in Lagos for an important event.

“I am not in Abuja. I am in Lagos because of a very important program. So there is nothing I can say about it,” she said.

Fubara Scraps Wike’s 10,000 Job Approvals, Announces New Recruitment Plan

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has annulled the 10,000 job positions in the State Civil Service previously approved by his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, and announced a new recruitment process.

Governor Wike, before leaving office, had sanctioned the immediate employment of numerous youths to address vacancies in the state’s workforce.

Advertorial

However, during an interactive session with stakeholders in Port Harcourt on Friday, Governor Fubara explained that he cancelled the recruitment due to flaws and compromises in the process by those responsible for its execution.

Governor Fubara emphasized the need for a more transparent recruitment process, expressing disappointment that a significant portion of the names submitted from the 23 local government areas were politically motivated selections.

Advertorial

Addressing questions, Governor Fubara stated, “The first question on the ten thousand jobs: when we reviewed the details submitted from the 23 local government areas, we found that about 60 percent of the names were over-aged and selected for political patronage.”

Fubara questioned the practicality of hiring individuals who are 52 years old as civil servants, noting the limited time they would have before reaching retirement age. “What we need is employment for the future,” he added.

Meanwhile, Governor Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining a strong social contract with the people of Rivers State, emphasizing that this bond will drive governance on a solid foundation.

In related efforts to improve the state, Governor Fubara urged service providers for the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) to enhance their performance in keeping the streets clean.

Represented by the Head of Rivers State Civil Service, Dr. George Nwaeke, Fubara issued this directive when he received a delegation of RIWAMA Service Providers Association leaders and members during a solidarity walk to the Government House Gate in Port Harcourt on Friday.

BREAKING: Appeal Court Overturns Judgment Sacking Enugu Traditional Ruler, Reinstates Him

The Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu on Friday reinstated His Royal Majesty, Igwe Cyril Anayo Anochili, as the traditional ruler of Umuogbuagu Autonomous Community, Ugwuoba, Oji River LGA, Enugu State.

Daily Gazette gathered that Igwe Anochili was removed from his position in 2020 by the state’s High Court.

Advertorial

Dissatisfied with the High Court’s decision in suit No: HOR/17/2004, Igwe Cyril Anayo Anochili appealed the judgment, seeking its nullification.

Counsel for the respondents, Prof. Zeph Chukwuemeka Ayogu, represented by Barr. Chinedu Achu, urged the appellate court to uphold the trial court’s judgment, which favored Chief Nathan Nwaezenagu Nwangwu, and dismiss the appeal for lacking merit.

Daily Gazette recall that the Court of Appeal had previously quashed an interlocutory application by the appellants’ counsel to submit additional exhibits at appeal, defending the third appellant’s credentials, being Igwe Anochili.

Counsel for the appellant, Sir OAU Onyema, argued that the trial court’s judgment should be voided because it removed a recognized traditional ruler, whose name is in the gazette, without involving the Local Government Secretary, Commissioner for Chieftaincy Matters, Attorney General of the state, or the government of Enugu State.

Advertorial

“The learned judge erred in law and misdirected himself when he directed that the name of the plaintiff be forwarded to the Governor for recognition/issuance of a certificate. This is because the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs was not made a party to the suit nor invited to give evidence in the suit.”

“The trial court held that the qualifying certificate for the Igweship position in Enugu is a WASSCE Certificate and that the second defendant obtained a certificate in 2004 after he indicated interest. WASSCE Certificate is not the minimum recognizable qualification for the Igweship in Enugu State. There is no provision in the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Law for a WASSCE certificate or any such certificate. Indication of interest is not the same as being a candidate for election.”

He further argued that “the Government has the power to decide who is qualified or not by virtue of the Traditional Rulers Law of Enugu State 2004. The qualification required of a person to become a traditional ruler is clearly provided in the Traditional Rulers Law CAP 151, Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria, 2004.”

Advertorial

“The trial court’s inclination to rely on the plaintiff’s counsel on Order 13 Rule 15(1) of the High Court Rules 2006 to oust the issue of non-joinder of the persons named in Section 5 of the Traditional Rulers Law, CAP 151 Revised Laws of Enugu State 2004, being the Governor, Commissioner, and Secretary to the LGA, was erroneously resolved in favor of the plaintiffs; yet an order was made against the people not joined, despite the fact that the ‘contentious issue at stake’ is an act already completed by those not joined, as mentioned herein.”

Sir OAU Onyema maintained that “the trial court awarded reliefs not prayed for by the plaintiffs, by suo moto generating a consequential application, and determining the same in favor of the plaintiffs by saying ‘Following from the orders made above, this court needs to give effect to this judgment by making a consequential order.'”

“The trial court erred in law when it made an order against a non-party to a suit, who had no opportunity to defend himself, being the Governor of Enugu State; hence occasioning a grievous miscarriage of justice.” he argued.

Delivering it’s judgment in the appeal number No: CA.E.115.2020, the presiding judge, Hon. Justice Ridwan Maiwada Abdullahi, overturned the High Court’s judgment delivered on March 16, 2020, by Justice A.A. Nwobodo.

The appellate court, finding merit in the appeal, resolved the issues in favor of the appellants.

Speaking with Daily Gazette correspondent after the judgment, His Royal Highness, Igwe Cyril Anayo Anochili, hailed the judgment as landmark and stated that truth had prevailed.

He paid tribute to the judiciary for being the last hope of the common man and thanked his subjects who stood with him till the end.

Court Grants Chioma Okoli N5 Million Bail In Tomato Paste Review Case

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted Chioma Okoli bail in the amount of N5 million, following her arraignment on charges of conspiracy and cyberstalking.

On Tuesday, May 28, 2024, Okoli appeared before Hon. Justice Peter Lifu and was subsequently remanded at Suleja Correctional Center. She pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Advertorial

Her lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, filed a bail application which was reviewed on Friday.

Justice Lifu granted the bail, stipulating that Okoli must provide two sureties.

One of the sureties must be a spouse or a blood relative residing in Abuja with verifiable means of livelihood.

Additionally, Okoli must surrender her passport to the court, if she possesses one.

Advertorial

Justice Lifu cited Section 365 (5) of the 1999 Constitution, emphasizing the presumption of innocence.

He stated that denying bail would constitute a misuse of judicial discretion and amount to pre-trial punishment.

The trial is scheduled to continue on June 13, 2024.

The charges stem from an incident in 2023 when Eric Omeofia, CEO of Erisco Foods Limited, claimed that a negative review by Okoli on the Nagiko Tomato Mix, alleging it contained too much sugar, harmed his business.

Following her review, Okoli was arrested in September 2023.
Her lawyer argued that her fundamental rights were being violated by the police and Omeofia.

The charges against Okoli include allegations that she, along with others currently at large, used social media to spread false information intended to harm Erisco Foods Limited, causing annoyance, inconvenience, and other negative impacts.

The charges are based on provisions in the Cyber Crime Prohibition Act.

The court document states:

“That you Chioma Edoka Okoli also known as Chioma Egodi Jnr, Happiness Obas now at large, and Don Kashking now at large, on or about September 2023 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, conspired to intentionally send a message via computer and social media, using your Facebook handle Chioma Egodi Jnr, with the intention of instigating people against Erisco Foods Limited, knowing the information to be false and intending to cause annoyance, inconvenience, danger, obstruction, insult, injury, criminal intimidation, enmity, hatred, ill will, or needless anxiety to Erisco Foods Limited, thereby committing an offense under Section 27 (1) (B) of the Cyber Crime Prohibition Act.

Military Vows Strong Retaliation For Killing Of Five Soldiers In Aba

In the wake of the tragic killing of five soldiers in Abia State, the military has vowed to retaliate with overwhelming force.

The soldiers were attacked on Thursday by gunmen enforcing a sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to commemorate those who died during the Nigerian Civil War of 1967-70.

Advertorial

In an official statement released on Friday, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, accused IPOB and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), of orchestrating the attack.

He emphasized that the military’s response would be both fierce and decisive.

“An overwhelming military response will be brought to bear on the group to ensure their total defeat,” declared Buba.

Advertorial

Providing details of the incident, Buba explained that the soldiers, stationed at the Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area near Aba metropolis, were ambushed by heavily armed militants.

The attackers arrived in three tinted Prado Toyota SUVs and were supported by additional forces from nearby built-up areas.

“This unprovoked attack claimed the lives of five brave soldiers who were deployed to maintain peace and protect the citizens,” Buba lamented.

“The loss of these personnel in the line of duty is deeply mourned by the armed forces.”

An investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the ambush.

Buba highlighted the critical importance of public support in combating terrorist activities, noting that the terrorists exploit local sympathies to launch their attacks.

“The lifeline of any terrorist group is the support they receive from the local population, and this incident is no exception. Winning this war is significantly harder without the backing of the people,” he stated.

Buba reiterated the military’s commitment to responding robustly to such acts of violence.

“We will ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous act are brought to justice. The military’s retaliation will be fierce, and we will apply overwhelming pressure to guarantee the total defeat of IPOB and ESN,” he vowed.
